Excellent value! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the 3rd of these that I have purchased. I got one for myself, 2 for 2 of my daughters, and we are all very happy with them. The type is very easy to read, the intros and footnotes are informative and I find it to be very sturdy, as well, as it gets carried around quite a bit. The price is excellent for a Bible of this quality.

my primary bible 5 out of 5 stars.

I've found the NIV to be the easiest translation to read, and at times quite poetic. But more importantly (for poetry I'll hit up the King James) it helps bring the Word to me. ANd the study Bible is a valuable tool.

great study Bible 5 out of 5 stars.

great study Bible, has information on each book at the beginning. lots of help on each page, loaded with maps.

Study Bible: Great quality 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Bible is well-made, and well bound. The study helps are comprehensive, and the best I've used. Background and historical information is helpful, and notes on translation variations are illuminating.Recommended for anyone wanting to study the Bible without a lot of extra books out at the same time. It doesn't completely eliminate the usefulness of a Bible dictionary or encyclopedia, but for the average reader who wants to get a full sense of the meanings of the texts without getting bogged down in other resources and commentaries, it's a great choice.

Amplified Bible 5 out of 5 stars.

Purchased as a gift for diabetic who is loosing his sight. He was happy to be able to study once again.

Careful- don't read too much into it 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Although it may be helpful in seeing a range of possible meanings for words, it has often been used as a witness for formulating false or misleading doctrines. Just because a word can have a particular semantic range doesn't mean one can pick and choose the meaning they want. A term must be understood properly in its immediate and larger context to avoid mis-understanding the text. Read other translations first, and multiple commentaries before advocating a new-found meaning for a verse.

This particular version of the Amplified Bible from Amazon is missing pages from the New Testament. Returned for another of the same, and it was missing the same pages. The printing of this version must have been defective.

Amplified Bible, Large Print Hardcover Edition 5 out of 5 stars.

Beautiful edition of the Amplified Bible! The print font used is so clear and bright on the page, and just the right size. These were gifts for friends who are elderly and have vision problems, and they were so thrilled they could actually read them with no difficulty at all.

The NIV is not a Bible just for dummies 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The New International Version is the most readable English translation ever produced. And if that doesn't make it a "Good Book," then I don't know what does!

Granted, I still prefer to read God's Word in the original tongues, not in a modern translation. (I've got nothing against the watered-down English versions sold today in Bible bookstores, but the ancient biblical scrolls are just a whole lot funnier.)

Most people these days cannot do that: they cannot read Scripture as it was first intended by the Author. Not to worry: Bible translators have saved you a headache and you can thank God for them. Many of the holy Ghost's original sentences are so ungrammatical and awkwardly constructed, and others so unintelligible, that the translators for Zondervan Corp and these other big Bible companies have graciously re-written the text so as to enhance Scripture's appeal to the 21st-century reader. And in the N.I.V. more than in any other, those scholars have done a truly wonderful job of tidying up.

If you prefer an English Bible that is halfway faithful to the original, then read the Authorised Version, better known in America as "the King James Version." The KJV/Authorised Version also has the most authentic prose style, with thee and thou and hath and dost and verily, which is how God actually talks, albeit in Hebrew. ([...]

But if it's a highly readable New Age paraphrase of the Bible you want, and if you cannot decide between the eighteen leading options in your local bookstore or on BibleGateway.com, then allow me to recommend Zondervan's "New International Version" (NIV). Here, at last, is an English-language Bible in which all obscenities and difficult words have been euphemised; God's curses, tempered, and His personality, softened; all theological conundrums, solved; all contradictions, removed; and all the howlers, corrected - which is also why the NIV is ideal for the younger generation, grades five and below.

Here's another thing you will love about Zondervan's New International Version: it is reader-friendly. The NIV makes the Lord sound like an affable American football coach, but with His bad words deleted, such as "piss" (Hebrew shathan) which is a word that God, in the Authorised Version, uses quite a bit (but only when He is angry, e.g., 1 Sam. 25:22, 1 Sam. 25:34, 1 Kings 14:10, 16:11, 21:21, 2 Kings 9:8).

And how's this for a major improvement? Almost every place that the word "Hell" appears in the Authorised Version, the NIV substitutes "the grave" or "the realm of the dead." (Where would you rather spend eternity - in "Hell," or in "the realm of the dead"?)

Then, too, in the NIV, every instance of the word, "Ghost" has been eliminated, and not just the holy one. ("Why should we scare people?" That's Zondervan's policy. "We're marketing Christ the King, not Stephen King! And if you can't tell the difference between those two, well then! - Don't blame us, but you can expect a warm welcome, someday, when you die and your aura gets sent forever to the realm of the dead!")

Love the historical/background information. This is a good resource for helping today's kids identify with the Bible's historical figures, cultures, and lessons. Without completely altering the poetic language, it offers activities and ideas to improve comprehension and help children see the relevance of the text to their own lives.

Wonderful Service 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Now, readers of the Bible who are interested in studying Jewish traditions have a one-volume resource specifically tailored to their needs. The Jewish Study Bible presents the center of gravity of the Scriptures where Jews experience it--in Torah. It offers readers the fruits of various schools of Jewish traditions of biblical exegesis (rabbinic, medieval, mystical, etc.) and provides them with a wealth of ancillary materials that aid in bringing the ancient text to life. The nearly forty contributors to the work represent the cream of Jewish biblical scholarship from the world over. No knowledge of Hebrew is required for one to make use of this unique volume.
The JSB uses The Jewish Publication Society TANAKH Translation, whose name is an acronym formed from the Hebrew initials of the three sections into which the Hebrew Bible is traditionally divided (Torah, Instruction; Nevi'im, Prophets; and Kethubim, Writings). A committee of esteemed biblical scholars and rabbis from the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Judaism movements produced this modern translation, which dates from 1985.
Anyone interested in acquiring a fuller understanding of the riches of the Bible will profit from reading The Jewish Study Bible.

PRELIMINARY REVIEW 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Normally I don't do this... I'll give a product a good going over before I review it. However this is "on order" as a gift from a family member, but I couldn't wait, I saw it in the store and thumbed through it for a few minutes.

My initial impressions appear here. Set aside the "controversy" you've been seeing on here (granted, I'm Catholic, not Orthodox, so I might be missing something). This is a translation of the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament), and the New Testament is the New King James Version.

This is a nice hardcover Bible, with some big colorful icons interspersed. There are nice introductions and foot notes for each book, traditional interpretations of what each book says and who wrote it, plus extensive prayers, "how to read the bible," canon lists, and liturgical calendar type stuff in the back (maps and the like as well).

As expected, this includes the Deuterocanonical books found in Catholic bibles, placed in the traditional order for Orthodox (Orthodox view the Septuagint itself, which always included these "extra" books not found in the Hebrew, as the inspired canon of the "Old Testament") plus the Anagignoskenomena not found in the Catholic canon (ex: 3 Maccabees, 1 Esdras). Some of the books are named differently as well, keeping with Orthodox tradition (1-2 Samuel and 1-2 Kings are known as "1-4 Kingdoms").

I didn't check to see if the Psalms were numbered according to the LXX or were the Septuagint (rather than Masoretic) translation. I know that was a sticking point with some Orthodox, but I didn't have the time to compare.

This provides a both a handy reference for the Bible, from a Christian believer's standpoint, and also a nice introduction to some basic Orthodoxy for non-Orthodox.

I liked the fact that the CHURCH FATHERS are referenced in the footnotes, showing for example what John Chrysostom thought of certain passages of the Gospel of John.

The trouble is, and hopefully this will be fixed in a future addition, there is no SPECIFIC CITATION given. So if I want to know in what book John Chrysostom said such and such, I have go to looking through his complete works to find out. Not everyone realizes you can look that stuff up online, but it would have been nicer, if they had done the quotations like David Bercot's "A Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs" which gave specific citations. So we're just trusting the author that the Patristic writer really said this somewhere (though it may be a paraphrase).

The pages are thinner than expected and the book is surprisingly lightweight, but feels good in the hands. The paper isn't too cheap (I hate "newsprint" type bibles).

I'll probably revise this once I own the thing myself and have more time to use it, but for now, it's worth getting... an above average Bible, and has a certain "one-of-a-kind-ness" to it even if you already own a half a dozen Bibles (like I do).

Oh, and it's missing 4 Maccabees, but then I guess that text was never considered "canonical" by the Eastern Orthodox church, and was only in an "appendix" to the Septuagint (unlike 1-3 Maccabees).

What I've seen so far is good, though there could be a few improvements (like direct citations of the Patristic commentary).

Editorial Review:

The FIRST EVER Orthodox Study Bible presents the Bible of the early church and the church of the early Bible.

  • New Testament from the New King James Version
  • Commentary drawn from the early Church Christians
  • Easy-to-Locate liturgical readings
  • Book Introductions and Outlines

Approved 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Three Bibles, The Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition, The Jerusalem Bible (1966) and the New American Bible (1970 edition) are approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Holy See for use in U.S. Catholic Churches. The New American Bible is the work of Catholic scholars and some non-catholic scholars in rendering the ancient text.
The introductions to each chapter are very informative and there are many footnotes explaining the text. Any controversy concerning the various editions of the New American Bible are a subject to be resolved by the Holy See and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

While it is disappointing that there still has to be a "Cathilic Version" of the Bible, it is encouraging that Bible scholars of all Christian denominations are increasingly working from original languages rather than only Latin or Greek (e.g. the Vulgate)translations. This edition, especially because of the expanded footnotes, gives everyone a greater understanding of the inspired Word of God.
