Editorial Review:

The only complete interlinear Bible available in English—and it’s keyed to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance! Thousands of pastors, students, and laypeople have found The Interlinear Bible to be a time-saving tool for researching the subtle nuances and layers of meaning within the original biblical languages. Featuring the complete Hebrew and Greek texts with a direct English rendering below each word, it also includes The Literal Translation of the Bible in the outside column. But what truly sets this resource apart are the Strong’s numbers printed directly above the Hebrew and Greek words. Strong’s numbers enable even those with no prior knowledge of Greek or Hebrew to easily access a wealth of language reference works keyed to Strong’s—Greek/ Hebrew dictionaries, analytical lexicons, concordances, word studies, and more.

The Hebrew is based on the Masoretic Text and the Greek is from the Textus Receptus. The sources of the texts are documented in the preface, and are essentially the same (with some minor variations) to the Hebrew and Greek texts used by the KJV translators.

Only a small minority of Bible students ever achieve the ability to read the original biblical languages. This resource offers a non-threatening tool for those lacking language training to begin exploring the languages of Scripture.

• Conveniently includes the entire Hebrew and Greek text of the Bible in one place

• Offering a concise, literal translation of each Greek and Hebrew word, it’s a great jumping off point for in-depth Bible study and text analysis.

This book is a must have for anyone seeking Yeshua. I'm not a scholar by any means. I'm just a new babe in Christ looking for true scripture from the Jewish Bible. This Bible has been with me for every Bible Study I have done since I bought it, and I wouldn't give it up for anything. It's a wonderful addition to my other Bible. Make this purchase! You will never regret it!

Wonderful translation 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This has been a most welcome and very handy source for us whenever we seek English translations of Jewish sacred texts.

We also own the Stone edition of the Tanach: The Torah, Prophets, Writings, including all 24 books of the so-called "Old Testament," in Hebrew and English, with commentary. We also own The Torah: A Modern Commentary, which includes only Torah, better known as the Five Books of Moses, along with the readings' assignments to the Jewish holidays.

But this edition is by far the most used in our household, and we recommend it highly, to Jewish and Christian readers alike.

Highly recommended... 5 out of 5 stars.

I think this is a truly beautiful translation. I was also very happy with the quality of the book itself. Well worth every penny.

Fascinating to read when you have only had a Christian bias up until now 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Let's get one thing out of the way. All Bible translations have a bias. The Bible: Authorized King James Version (Oxford World's Classics) was a protestant document through and through. While many claim to be easier to understand, most of them sacrifice ambiguity and humor in the interest of "clarity". The worst offenders change the Bible stories altogether.

This particular version of the Bible is Jewish. Note the name as Tanakh and not "Old Testament" since in Judaism there is no "New Testament". The stories are arranged by the title - Torah - Nevuvim - Khethovim - or Torah, Prophets and Wisdom literature (Job, Ruth, Song of Songs, etc.) One can quibble with this translation losing some of poetry (unlike The Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy (The Schocken Bible, Volume 1) which strives to preserve the poetic verses and repetitive words so that English readers can get a true taste of the Torah as it sounds to a native Hebrew speaker) but this is a fine translation full of passion and storytelling.

Of course, my personal bias in favor of this translation began when I read it for class and fell in love with stories that I once thought of as only prologues to Christianity. Gone are the "proof texts" that litter many a Christian missionary reading. Isaiah is looking at a young woman and not a virgin about to give birth. Psalm 22 is talking about lions not the crucifixion of Jesus. But what makes this more interesting is how fun some of the stories are, particularly Samuel (the story of David) which is ultimately tragic but has some hilarious bits along the way including the Philistines being stricken with hemorrhoids in chapter 5 and making golden rat and hemorrhoid statues to honor the G-d of Israel. Most other translations wimp out and say that they died of "the plague". Sure, it's immature to look through a Bible for scatological humor, but if it's there, it's there. And it makes God Knows seem a lot less blasphemous in comparison.

In many ways, this is the redheaded step child of Bible translations. Artscroll has been cornering the market on translations and they like to use Rashi commentary in place of translation (which means a thoroughly awful castrated version of Song of Songs) and others prefer King James for poetry, but I still find this one to be my favorite. Maybe because of some of the weaknesses or maybe because in a field ripe with biases and agenda, this one tries to be non-biased as it can be.

Beautiful little book 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a lovely book... beuatifully put together, a pleasure to hold and read, and with a limpid English translation. I had never seen a Jewish version of the scriptures before and this is a revelation.
Also, coming from Europe and buying this while on vacation in the US, I found the price amazingly low

JPS Tanakh 4 out of 5 stars.

All I suggest is this: If you have a difficult time reading very small text, DO NOT BUY THIS.
Also, I was a bit put off by the bar-code printed in the inner cover.
Other than that, this is a fine translation, the book is well made.

Pocket tanaka 2 out of 5 stars.

Type much too small for mature eyes. If you are price conscious and have good eyes--great deal

Editorial Review:

Now, for the first time, a pocket version of The Hebrew-English "Tanakh" is available, with the exact same text and number of pages as our standard edition. The type, though small, is clearly readable, and the letters, Hebrew vowels, and cantillation marks are crisp and clear. The sturdy, coated paperback cover embossed in black with gold lettering is made to endure heavy, constant use.

Big enough to read 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While it will add to your biceps more than likely, this edition is large enough to read. I bought the 1997 green cover BHS for the price, but it was so small that I came back and bought this one so I could see the holems and dageshes. Worth the money to see what you're doing.

BHS paperback edition 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A clearly printed, well-bound version of the BHS. The main drawback, in exchange for the compact size compared with the full-size, hardback edition, is that the Masorah Parva notes in the margins and the footnotes are so small that they are very difficult to read. A magnifying glass is required to ease the eye strain. While the price for this edition is attractive, I wish I had purchased the full-size, hardback edition.

BHS LARGE PRINT ED. 5 out of 5 stars.

BOOK AS ADVERTISED, SOME SCATTERED MARKINGS OF NO CONSEQUENCE.
LARGE PRINT EDITION MUCH EASIER TO READ.

THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT! 5 out of 5 stars.

All American publishers do a lousy job on this critical Hebrew Bible. Do not buy their versions. You must endure the long boat ride all the way from Germany, but you will find that your efforts are well rewarded.

First of all let me just say that the German Bible House (Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft) ROCKS! Oh my gosh! Every critical punctuation, jot and tittle are in their place. The editors from this publisher care about their work and the accuracy of it.

If you're a student of Hebrew, this is the work that you want. Forget the others.

Very good tool 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am very happy with this interlinear. The Hebrew reads right to left like normal, and the literal translation is a great assistance. I have studied Hebew, but am not an expert by any means. That makes this a good tool in my hands. It requires enough work to keep me "honest" in my study, but is not so technical and burdensome that "study" is the only thing I can do. Since I use the NIV in my pulpit ministry, it is very convenient to have it in the margin for my reference.

A Wonderful Treasure To Keep 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

At first this seems like a daunting book to read and to work through in seminary studies. This one book alone is the whole Old Testament, placed with Hebrew and NIV translations. Yet because it is vitally important for we as Christians to understand the scope and the development of the Bible, let alone the original message of the Scripture that Jesus and the apostles themselves (let alone the first century church and forward) used, this book is needed. The book is expensive, but it is well worth the price. We as Christians need to understand the Hebrew text, the development of the text, the wording used, the various translation considerations, et cetera. We can't just pick up the Bible, read it like someone would read a book at the beach, and just say "we know what the Bible says." The Bible is the message of God, both Old Testament and New Testament, showing the developmental construction of the covenantal relationship between God and man from Genesis through the Book of Revelation, hence we should explore the Word of God for all its worth. I love that I have the Hebrew and the NIV (though I myself tend to use New King James myself) to examine and study upon. Seeing how the Hebrew language works, and how one can translate the text, I feel that I am growing closer to the Lord by gaining greater appreciation for His Scripture. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to mine the Bible for all the treasure that it holds. The Old Testament itself, as this is the Old Testament book, is worth the time and the patience to study, explore, pray upon, and allow to teach and develop us as men and women of God's calling.

Editorial Review:

These four volumes in one binding include the standard Hebrew text Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, the NIV (North American version) as the English parallel text, a word for word translation for renderings of specific Hebrew words, and an introduction on how to use the Interlinear text.

Fear-free! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a child, I tried to learn and it didn't stay with me. What did stay was a fear that understanding prayerbook Hebrew was something I couldn't do. Well, judging by the excellent reviews, I bought this book. And lesson one made me sigh with relief. I *can* learn this!

Please note that you need to know the Hebrew alphabet but then you can move right along.

Five-Star Text, Three-Star Commentary 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 21 people found this review helpful.

"Pirke Avot" (the "Chapter of the Fathers") is a tractate of the Mishnah that collects not laws but sayings of the tannaitic Rabbis, mostly concerning the virtues of Torah study and the proper conduct of scholars. It is one of the classics of rabbinic literature, included (in whole or in part) in most prayer books, and the source of many familiar sayings. The picture it presents of Torah study as a democratic ideal, available to all and instilling a generous humility and respect for others, is a goal we can still admire and aspire to.

The translation and commentary presented here is helpful but leaves something to be desired. Each passage of Avot is followed by a brief commentary, generally identifying the rabbis quoted, providing some quasi-historical background on them and their relationship to other quoted rabbis, clarifying obscure phrases and summarizing the thoughts of Rashi, Maimonides and Bartinoro on many of the passages. (The introduction might lead one to think that the commentary also summarizes "Avot de Rabbi Natan" and Yom Tov Lippman Heller's commentary, but I found only a few references to either of these works.) This commentary is very helpful for understanding the plain meaning of the text, but seldom goes beyond the plain meaning to explore the theological or ethical significance of the passage. (A few passages that make the Reform editors uncomfortable are noteable exceptions -- here the commentary notes that "we modern Jews" look at things differently. While I agree with the modern conclusions, I found this condescending attitude annoying and unnecessary.)

Each chapter of Pirke Avot is followed by a section of brief essays (usually two or three paragraphs) by the editors on "salient themes." These often seemed more tangential than salient to me (a brief statement in Avot 3:1 that we return to dust leads to an essay on Jewish views on cremation), but they were interesting and provided further background on various aspects of traditional Jewish history, practice and thought. The brief essays are followed by section of somewhat longer "gleanings" from the works of various Reform or liberal Jewish thinkers. These tend to be quite tangential and are plainly intended to provide food for thought and discussion, not to answer questions. A few of them seemed more than a little out-dated, but in general the selection was interesting, if obviously slanted toward a Reform view of the world.

A final note on the translation, which is colloquial and inclusive. The former (particularly the use of contractions, which to my ear made too many passages sound like "don't be a don't bee") was irritating to me, but that's a matter of taste. The attempt to be inclusive (i.e., to use gender-neutral language), however, led on more than one occasion to translations that were so awkward they were a distraction ("everyone has one's moment"), which I find more difficult to forgive.

Editorial Review:

Traditional commentaries on Judaism by the leading scholars of our age. Original Hebrew is presented alongside the translation in linear, easy-to-read format.

Editorial Review:

Regarded throughout the English-speaking world as the standard English translation of the Holy Scriptures, the "JPS Tanakh" has been acclaimed by scholars, rabbis, lay leaders, Jews, and Christians alike. "The JPS Tanakh" is an entirely original translation of the Holy Scriptures into contemporary English, based on the "Masoretic" (the traditional Hebrew) text. It is the culmination of three decades of collaboration by academic scholars and rabbis, representing the three largest branches of organized Judaism in the United States. Not since the third century B.C.E., when 72 elders of the tribes of Israel created the Greek translation of the Scriptures known as the Septuagint, has such a broad-based committee of Jewish scholars produced a major Bible translation. In executing this monumental task, the translators made use of the entire range of biblical interpretation, ancient and modern, Jewish and non-Jewish. They drew upon the latest findings in linguistics and archaeology, as well as the work of early rabbinic and medieval commentators, grammarians, and philologians. The resulting text is a triumph of literary style and biblical scholarship, unsurpassed in accuracy and clarity.

Good but not quite what I expected 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I like the idea behind this book, but I had a bit different expectations -- probably a misunderstanding on my part. I was expecting that this would be structured around broader syntactical rules and principles (obviously not as detailed as Arnold/Choi and certainly not Waltke/O'Connor), followed by reading examples to illustrate the principles. Instead the structure of the book is quite the opposite -- it is a series of reading passages, each of which is followed by explanation or discussion of each word (form, parsing, etc.) in passage. It is up to the reader to connect all the different instances and passages that illustrate this or that syntactical rule. With this understanding of the book, its structure and objective, I would say it's well done.

Although it's not what I initially thought it would be, I would still recommend it as a useful resource. The authors selected interesting passages from all over the OT and the explanation behind each passage is certainly helpful. The back of the book also includes an answer key to the parsing exercises. See the following list of passages covered in this book:

Law
1. Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning
