Presents a decidedly liberal theological perspective 1 out of 5 stars.
20 of 29 people found this review helpful.

The Bible commentaries are written from a liberal theological perspective. It is obvious that the authors believe the Bible is just a product of ancient myths and storytelling. They disbelieve miracles and explain away prophecy by assigning late dates to the books. The notes put forth theories that are based upon opinion and conjecture rather than solid textual evidence. More a work of anti-Christian and anti-Jewish propaganda than a balanced, scholarly work. Also, while it is not a bad translation, the NRSV does have some gender-neutrality inserted into it. All in all, I cannot recommend this study Bible. It reads like skeptics and non-believers wrote it. Instead, I would recommend the NIV Study Bible or NKJV Study Bible.

Breath of Fresh Air 5 out of 5 stars.

I had recently been looking for a Study Bible that would be challenging and faith affirming to my walk. I made the mistake of purchasing the Apolgetics Study Bible and found myself questioning how Christianity could possibly survive when fodder like that is what we are presenting to a non-Christian world. When I was directed towards this study bible I found that finally there are biblical scholars who deeply care about what a text actually means, not so much about conforming the text to pre-conceived ideas. So far my reading has been enjoyable and enlightening and I'm looking forward to continuing my study. I highly recommend this study bible.

Editorial Review:

The landmark general reference Bible that offers the full text of the New Revised Standard Version, now completely revised and updated by leading biblical scholars, including, new introductions and notes, diagrams, charts and maps––25% revised or new material.

After 10 years of new archeological discoveries and changes in biblical studies, it was time for an overhaul of this classic reference work.

With the guidance of the Society of Biblical Literature, an organization of the best biblical scholars world wide, we have selected Dean of Yale Divinity School, Harold Attridge, to oversee the Study Bible's updating and revision.

• The fundamental strengths of the first HCSB remain . . .

up–to–date introductions to the Biblical books, based on the latest critical scholarship, by leading experts in the field

concise notes, clearly explaining names, dates, places, obscure terms, and other difficulties in reading the Biblical text

careful analysis of the structure of Biblical books

abundant maps, tables, and charts to enable the reader to understand the context of the Bible, and to see the relationship among its parts.

• But, in this new revised edition . . .

Every introduction, essay, map, illustration and explanatory note has been reviewed and updated, and new material added. For instance,

There are newly commissioned introductory essays on

the archaeology of ancient Israel and the New Testament world,

the religion of ancient Israel,

the social and historical context of each book of the Bible, and

on Biblical interpretation

There are completely new introductions and notes for many of the books in the Bible, plus a full revision and updating of all others.

Of special interest are:

The literary history of the Pentateuch (those books between the Old and New Testament that Catholics include in their Bible)

More references to ancient non–Biblical sources which seem to parallel books in the Bible like the Gnostic gospels uncovered in Egypt or the famous scrolls found near the Dead Sea in Israel.

And, more comprehensive attention to the interrelationship of Old and New Testaments

The New Adventure Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
46 of 46 people found this review helpful.

This Bible is great for young readers and will keep them going well in to High School. There are many graphics throughout this Bible and special interest comments that explain why people did things the way they did or why they wore a particular type of clothing. Our church gave this New Adventure Bible to all children graduating into the third grade. The NIV translation is pretty understandable to young readers. Each book has an introduction that is designed towards the young reader. There are also special pages to enhance a childs understanding: for example in addition to the actual text of the ten commandments - is a special page with pretty graphics that re-word the commandments in language for youth. A special page explains "How to pray" - another summarizes Old Testament Prophets, and yet another page called "Getting to know Jesus" helps kids understand what it means to be a Christian. Just like the 'grown up' Bible - this book is a Red Letter edition. My fifteen year old still loves this Bible.

Editorial Review:

The New Adventure Bible opens up the door to Bible adventure and discovery for kids ages 8-12. This edition includes the popular New International Version (NIV) plus all the features that have made this study Bible the leading Bible for kids. With its practical approach, The New Adventure Bible helps kids make the jump from learning the Bible to living the Bible.

Indespensible Edition for the Koine Student 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After struggling with Plato, Sophocles, and Aristotle, Biblical Greek is a simple and profound joy. The forms are less complicated and more regular. The content remains profound. Reading the New Testament in Greek has never been more fun nor simpler than with the aid of this edition.

Translation: This edition has two: interlinear (parallel with the Greek) and the NRSV in the margins. Both are excellent. The interlinear translation helps identify obscure phrases and idioms and the NRSV is a wonderful aid to shaping one's translation. That said, the NRSV's only negative qualities are in its "gender-inclusive" language, rendering "brothers and sisters" for "adelphoi". This may bother some, inserting a meaning that is not literally present in the original, but otherwise the NRSV is impeccably accurate to the best of my knowledge.

Aesthetics: This is a big deal for a Greek NT. If the Greek font is ugly (take the revolting UBS font, for example) it can really kill the mood. But this Greek font is gorgeous and a pleasure to read. Likewise, all type, though small, is clear and easy on the eyes.

Durability: Exceptionally well-bound. The hardcover binding is sewn and withstands tremendous abuse. However, the pages are onionskin-thin, so turn them carefully.

Size: Ideal. Large enough to place on a desk and use as a translation exercise, small enough to plop in your lap and read for hours. 913 pages are condensed into an inch of volume, but it's never overwhelming. This is a perfectly sized volume for study or reading.

Price: Unmatchable. All combined factors above rate a price only a hair above fifteen dollars. If you wanted an interlinear New Testament, what on earth are you waiting for? Wait no longer! This is the best interlinear this amount of money can buy. Period.

Editorial Review:

The New Greek-English Interlinear New Testament contains a literal word-for-word English rendering of the Greek text in interlinear form. A parallel column of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) accompanies the interlinear text. Numerous textual notes are also included. The New Greek-English Interlinear New Testament is the newest interlinear translation that uses the UBS4/NA27 text.

Youth Bible from Catholic dissenters....be careful. 2 out of 5 stars.
42 of 75 people found this review helpful.

The Catholic Youth Bible (CYB) is a misguided attempt to interpret Sacred Scripture according to modern standards in an effort to make the Bible, and the Catholic Faith, more appealing to young people. Generally, young people see through such attempts to make religion fashionable, and rightly find them unappealing. Furthermore, by pandering to religious pluralism and other decidedly un-Catholic ideas, and by ambiguously presenting Church teaching, the CYB compromises the Catholic Faith. Thus, in an effort to make the Catholic Faith appealing, the CYB is neither appealing, nor is it Catholic. A young person of high school age is better served with an unadulterated Catholic Bible and a catechism of the appropriate reading level.

The CYB highlights the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) with over 650 short articles. These articles are designed to teach something about the Bible or make suggestions about how to live these teachings.

The CYB claims to be Catholic because "its introductions and articles reflect Catholic interpretation of the Bible and [because it] contains all seventy-three books and letters that form a complete Catholic Bible (pg. vii)." Throughout the CYB, however, "Catholic Christians" are referred to in the third person and their "beliefs" are presented as subjective opinion. Some articles, under the heading, "Catholic Connections", are intended to show the biblical basis for some Catholic beliefs and practices. This heading is rather confusing in that it implies that only certain sections, and not the whole of Sacred Scripture, have a connection to the Catholic Faith.

Other articles, intended to show how the Bible is "multicultural", represent distinct cultural perspectives. These articles introduce irrelevant cultural experiences, traditions, and poetry. Some even present non-Christian religious ideas and prayers. Ironically, these articles foster racial fixation in the context of Sacred Scripture which otherwise transcends racial difference.

Also, some of the "Live It" and "Did You Know" articles contain unnecessary and disturbing images. One article, for example, gives an account of the group rape of a teenage girl (pg. 43 No Way Shechem!). Another considers what menstruation must have been like for women of the Old Testament (pg. 123 Monthly Periods).

Ostensibly a version of the bible that will appeal to "modern" Catholic Youth. But it doesn`t take much searching to find objectionable content in the CYB. According to the CYB the author of Sirach is "sexist" (pg. 810 The Sexism of Sirach), the author of John's Gospel is anti-Semitic (pg. 1249 "The Jews" in the Gospel of John), and the sin of the Sodomites is ``inhospitality`` (pg. 25 Be Kind To Strangers). The rest is predictable. There is far more error in this Bible than I could possibly address in this space.

As the CYB purports to be Catholic, however, let us take a look at how it presents Church teaching. On page 1237 under the heading "Catholic Connections" and titled "The Eucharist" we find, "In Luke's account of the Last Supper, Jesus asks his disciples to remember him and all that he did, as they share the loaf of bread that he identified as his body given for us and the cup of wine that he identified with the New Covenant sealed by his blood." This is not consistent with Church teaching, which states "by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the wine into the substance of his blood (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1376)."

I do not recommend this Bible to anyone, for any reason. (TiberRiver review).

Editorial Review:

Featuring 650 lively, youth-friendly articles in the "Pray It!" "Study It!" "Live It!" model, The Catholic Youth Bible brings biblical topics to life and engages youth to reflect on the Scriptures, Catholic Tradition and beliefs, biblical history and figures, and contemporary issues. By drawing teens into the text, this inclusive Bible gives voice to young people of all cultures and nationalities and provides the necessary tools to make biblical messages relevant to real-world teen issues.

Editorial Review:

Many people are looking for a fresh way to read the Bible, not as a text to be mastered, but as a story to enter into and a lifestyle to pursue. In this unique Bible, the foremost names in Christian spirituality and biblical scholarship come together to provide a Bible that rediscovers Scripture as living text, rich with insights into how to live our lives more intimately with God.

Spearheaded by bestselling authors Richard J. Foster (Celebration of Discipline) and Dallas Willard (The Divine Conspiracy), The Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible introduces the concept of the "with-God life," a model for seeing the whole of Scripture as the unfolding story of God's plan for our loving relationship with the Creator. This central theme weaves throughout the essays, introductions, notes, and exercises, powerfully revealing how God is present to his people today and throughout history.

Yet our relationship with God should not be passive. Concrete practices—Spiritual Disciplines—have been used throughout church history to guide disciples of Jesus. This Bible integrates the Spiritual Disciplines into the Christian life by showing how they are central to the Bible's teachings and stories. Abraham and Ruth, Moses and Deborah, Jesus and the disciples all provide amazing examples of the life-changing power of prayer, worship, fasting, celebration, and many other Spiritual Disciplines. Scripture thus becomes a primary means for the discovery, instruction, and practice of these disciplines as well as a tool for spiritual formation.

Combining the highest possible biblical scholarship with the deepest possible heart devotion, this new Bible project seeks to nourish inner transformation by unlocking and revealing the profound resources within Scripture for changing our hearts and characters and bringing them in line with what God wants for our lives. The Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible will redefine what the Bible means for Christian discipleship.

women aren't all dumb, you know 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

First, let me say, I love the idea of this Bible--it's similar to the evangelical's NIV Women of Faith Bible. It's also a great translation overall and incredibly readable typeface (editors of the NAB Women's Study Bible PLEASE take note!) But just because we're Catholic women, doesn't mean we need to be pandered to and given the NRSV. I'm not opposed to saying "brothers and sisters" when the context calls for it, but I'm kind of rigorous when it comes to historical accuracy, and we all know the Gospel came into a patriarchal culture. We're big girls--we can take it. The most grievous error in these inclusive translations is changing passages that might affect the understanding of nature of Christ....when the words "son of man" in Old Testament passages (like in Daniel) are translated "mortal" or "human" is just unacceptable. The early church Fathers understood this to be a type of Christ, and He used the title for Himself. And changing Psalms, like 1 and 8--yes, they apply to all humanity, but they've always been understood to have the image of Christ in there--when the masculine singular is used. Causing people to possibly miss the Christological typology is not a small thing. When I was reconverted to Christianity and Catholicism, this produced what has been called "Eucharistic amazement",--I was just in awe at the way Jesus in in every part of Scripture. Why put roadblocks in the path of the Holy Spirit (not that He can't get around them, but still)? Discovering that "the Old (Testament) is in the New revealed, and the New is in the Old concealed" (paraphrasing St. Augustine) is one of the glories of our faith. Because of this excessive, compulsive tampering with Holy Scripture, I say no, no, no! The only problem is, the regular RSV Bibles are *UGLY*!!! Women love beautiful things. (There's a NIV Women of Faith Bible that's purple leather with purple print--oh, joy! No reason we can't do this. It's also expensive looking, unlike most Catholic Bibles. (Unfortunately, it's missing 7 books of the Bible, being a Protestant edition.)) Part of the Catholic faith is Christ reaching us through "stuff". Beauty matters. It soothes our souls in the daily battle. It matters. When are Catholic publishers going to GET WITH THE PROGRAM like our evangelical brethren (brothers and sisters, yes, both--lol!)
Thank you for listening to me--and please Lord let the editors read this! (Let Scott Hahn read it and please hurry up with a one volume RSV study bible--and make it pretty! ONE volume.) Of course, as Billy Graham says, any Bible you will read is the one for you--the important thing is to *read* the Bible. The Holy Spirit can do *anything*. If he could use the Da Vinci Code to convert me (in which He showed me the love between God and the Church, and the marital imagery behind the Eucharist)---He can do anything!

All this said--this is a beautifully made Bible, the stories are so helpful, and the print is readable. Do read it, just bearing in mind its limitations, no translation being perfect. But--some are more perfect than others. :)
Oh, and please bring back the blue and purple edition of this Bible that you had a few years ao--that orange is just a bit much....

Would be nice to have both devotional and some more study notes in the same Bible, but I know it's hard to get it all in one. But note the Life Application Study Bible. If we could do that with Catholic theology, it would be a best seller.

Editorial Review:

A Bible designed to make Scripture more accessible to Catholic women, focusing on deepening their spirituality by nurturing a love for God and his Word and teaching them how to use Scripture in prayer and daily life. It consists of the NRSV text with the deuterocanonical books, 260 Daily Meditations drawn from classic and contemporary sources, weekend meditation, character sketches of women of the Bible, and articles on living the Catholic traditions.
