The Message 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is an excellent contemporary version of the Bible. The language helps to better understand the meaning of the text. The print is really small, I wish I had purchased a larger version.

Smaller in Size Than Anticipated 4 out of 5 stars.

The Message Bible is really great, however, I was a little disappointed that it was so small. I don't remember when I ordered that it mentioned the size of the Bible and when I received it, I was very surprised with the small size. I could not read the small print without reading glasses (I do not require prescription glasses) and it's still hard to read. I will enjoy the content of The Message, but will have difficulty because it is so small. I caution others who are ordering to make sure that it is not the extra small size that I purchased, unless they are looking for a pocket-size Bible.

The Message Bible 3 out of 5 stars.

The Bible itself is wonderful. The only problem is that the print is REALLY small.

The Message 4 out of 5 stars.

I was dissappointed with the size of the Bibles. Maybe I had missed that in the ad. All else was fine.

Editorial Review:

In this contemporary English version of the New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs, Eugene Peterson strives to convey the earthy truths of the original Greek and Hebrew texts. As he explains in his introduction, there were two levels of language in the Greek-speaking world, "formal" and "informal". The one was for use in official documents, epic poetry, and philosophy, the other for shopping lists and personal letters--the common idiom of everyday speech. "This is the language used throughout the New Testament ... a rough and earthy language that reveals God's presence and action where we least expect it, catching us when we are up to our elbows in the soiled ordinariness of our lives and God is the furthest thing from our minds."

It is in the spirit of this "soiled ordinariness" that Eugene Peterson translates John 1:14 (NIV: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us") to "The word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood." Likewise, in Romans 8:3 where the NIV renders "For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering," The Message reads, "God went for the jugular when he sent his own son.... In his son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all." Peterson offers no pretense of elevated language or intellectualism, only the insistence that God is relevant in 20th-century work-week and weekend lives.

This kind of translation is not a new enterprise, however. Tyndale--the man singularly responsible for our English translations of the Bible--is purported to have said in a dispute with opposing clergy, "If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy that driveth the plow to know more of the Scriptures than thou dost." We're simply glad someone of our own generation chose to do the same. --Benjamin Gebhardt

Refreshing and reliable reading, but some suggestions 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I've always had my doubts on The Message version due to its seemingly careless and unrestricted translation of the texts. But when paralleled with the more trusted (though definitely not perfect) NIV translation, I at least have something to fall back on if I ever doubted some of the phrasing in The Message. Together, it becomes a refreshing read while still feeling backed up by the more reliable NIV.

Although generally a good compilation, there are a couple things that I would've liked to see: the red color on Jesus' spoken texts (for at least in the NIV), and perhaps a more distinguishable font between the two translations (as I read one translation, I would accidentally jump to the other one when I turn the page).

get the message 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great bible to use my only problem, there wasn't a ribbon marker as the desription states. This bible gives a clear understanding of the meaning and terms by paralleling side by side.

Excellent simple translation 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"The Message" is a great bible for new believers (even to offer as a gift), especially for those who want to see the "big picture" of the Bible. I wouldn't make this a primary study bible--it is a paraphrase.

The most beautiful, inspirational book EVER written. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Message, especially The Message Remix 2.0, is incredible. It's simply the Bible in modern language. BUT there is so much more to this. It's poetic, it's well explained, and it's written in such a way that the context of the pages are easily comprehendable. Each book starts out with Eugene Peterson explaining the whole book, to put it in perfect context. So when you read the book, it makes complete sense! The Bible finally makes sense!!! Each chapter has this heading sentence that explains the main point of the chapter. There are these neat little maps and such, but I can't explain enough the importance of how well written it is. It's to the point, and it explains exactly what the Bible means rather than what the Bible says. That said, you should supplement this "Study Paraphrase Bible" with the NIV, and other translations. You will cherish this wonderful hardbound book. It's truly changed my life and got me and my friends to connect with Jesus Christ on a whole new level. i like to sit down and underline parts that are especially meaningful to me, and then I type those things onto my "men's ministry" website www.roycebarber.com so I really would like to thank Eugene H. Peterson for being a light to help guide my way through this world. God Bless you all. The message can be found for free on BibleGateway.Com but its not the latest one. Thats ok though. Either version is highly articulate.

Editorial Review:

Why is this Bible different from all other Bibles? Because it is the only English version fully Jewish in style and presentation. It includes Dr. Stern's new version of the "Tanakh" ("Old Testament") and his highly acclaimed "Jewish New Testament."

The Complete Jewish Bible:

- follows the Hebrew Bible order of the Tanakh's books, the order with which Yeshua (Jesus) was familiar
- makes no separation between "Old" and "New" Testaments
- corrects misinterpretations in the New Testament resulting from anti-Jewish theological bias
- offers the original Hebrew names for people, places, and concepts, using easy-to-read English transliterations
- focuses on Messianic prophecy
- gives the traditional weekly and holiday synagogue readings, plus relevant readings from the "B'rit Hadashah" (New Testament)

The Complete Jewish Bible:

- reconnects Christians with their Jewish roots and the Jewish people
- connects Jews with the Jewishness of Messiah Yeshua and Messianic faith

Other features of this Bible: a comprehensive introduction, a pronouncing explanatory glossary, a reverse glossary, and special maps to aid Bible understanding.

Outstanding! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My only complaint is that I would like a hardbound version or one with a more heavy duty binding. Lamsa's translation undoes a lot of the terrible theological debates Christians often become entangled in because the wording of most translations simply isn't correct. I've used this version heavily in study since I acquired it. I have perhaps twenty Bibles and this one is a favorite. This is an eye opening work, and it will change the way you ponder the meaning of a large number of verses in scripture. I highly recommend this one for anyone seeking the Truth and looking to get a better understanding of Christ. Thank you Mr. Lamsa for your work.

studying the word 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

With the cross between the NIV and the Message it brings clarity to the word. Did not find the pages thin as I had read in earlier reviews. Pages were no thinner than any other bible that I have. Comparing price with other sites and stores, it was a good buy.

NIV/ The Message Large Print is a great addition to my library. 4 out of 5 stars.

NIV/The Message: New International Version, Parallel The one that I purchased was Large and Giant Print. It is easy to reference. The print is not quite as large as the LARGE PRINT books at my local library but still legible to me. I received the book in a timely fashion and in excellent condition. Buying from Amazon was easy. I have recommended this way of purchasing books to others.

The Bible I can understand 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Parallel Bible is written in such a way that verses that seem unclear in the NIV version are explained in the Message. Some of the translations have made me wonder about the real meaning and now to have it explained in every day terms makes the meaning so much more clearer. The large print also makes it easier to follow. A very rewarding book.

Editorial Review:

While most people think that the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are the only sacred writings of the early Christians, this is not at all the case. A companion volume to Bart Ehrman's Lost Christianities, this book offers an anthology of up-to-date and readable translations of many non-canonical writings from the first centuries after Christ--texts that have been for the most part lost or neglected for almost two millennia.
Here is an array of remarkably varied writings from early Christian groups whose visions of Jesus differ dramatically from our contemporary understanding. Readers will find Gospels supposedly authored by the apostle Philip, James the brother of Jesus, Mary Magdalen, and others. There are Acts originally ascribed to John and to Thecla, Paul's female companion; there are Epistles allegedly written by Paul to the Roman philosopher Seneca. And there is an apocalypse by Simon Peter that offers a guided tour of the afterlife, both the glorious ecstasies of the saints and the horrendous torments of the damned, and an Epistle by Titus, a companion of Paul, which argues page after page against sexual love, even within marriage, on the grounds that physical intimacy leads to damnation.
In all, the anthology includes fifteen Gospels, five non-canonical Acts of the Apostles, thirteen Epistles, a number of Apocalypses and Secret Books, and several Canon lists. Ehrman has included a general introduction, plus brief introductions to each piece. This important anthology gives readers a vivid picture of the range of beliefs that battled each other in the first centuries of the Christian era.

Has been supplanted 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This review is for 4 Hebrew lexicons in common use: Brown-Driver-Briggs, Koehler-Baumgartner, Holladay, and Langenscheidt.

The sizeable Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon is a development of Gesenius' historic work, and a long-time standard in English speaking countries. However, it has become dated, and now is used mostly because Hendrickson put out a cheaply constructed version keyed to Strong's concordance. Oxford's Clarendon Press edition is superior if you are required to get BDB. In addition, organizing entries by verbal root rather than alphabetically makes it difficult to use "BDB" for those without intimate knowledge of Hebrew. Fortunately, there is an alternative.

The Koehler-Baumgartner lexicon is superb and thorough, and based on the latest Hebrew and Aramaic scholarship. The authors also took into account cognates from Ugaritic and Akkadian, so users of this massive work have a goldmine of information to draw from. By massive, I mean it is over 2000 pages in 2 large volumes. This plus its $190 asking price means it might be better to let the university or seminary library bear the brunt of purchasing and housing it unless you are an Old Testament specialist.

Most readers will be best served by the work of William Holladay, a reasonably sized 426 pp lexicon based on the latest scholarship. Holladay abridged K-B by removing bibliographic references and other information most needed by specialists. It is well organized (alphabetically), and the font is clear. Entries also have references (not exhaustive) to use within the Old Testament, meaning it can be used as a poor man's OT concordance. While Holladay is manageably sized enough (9.75" x 6.875" x 1.25") to be pleasant to read and easily portable in a bookbag, it is not the smallest resource available.

Some may be tempted to go a step further for the ultimate in compactness with the Langenscheidt pocket dictionary. This item is 6" x 4" x 1" and quite lightweight - in its 1959 iteration anyway. Its definitions are limited in scope and scholarly foundation, but still, what else fits in your coat pocket?

My overall recommendation: Holladay for everyone, supplemented by Koehler-Baumgartner for those who need and can afford it.

BDB: 3 stars
K-B: 5 stars
Holladay: 5 stars
Langenscheidt: 4 stars

Editorial Review:

A trio of eminent Old Testament scholars—Francis Brown, R. Driver, and Charles Briggs—spent over twenty years researching, writing, and preparing The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon. Since it first appeared in the early part of the twentieth century, BDB has been considered the finest and most comprehensive Hebrew lexicon available to the English-speaking student. Based upon the classic work of Wilhelm Gesenius, the "father of modern Hebrew lexicography," BDB gives not only dictionary definitions for each word, but relates each word to its Old Testament usage and categorizes its nuances of meaning. BDB's exhaustive coverage of Old Testament Hebrew words, as well as its unparalleled usage of cognate languages and the wealth of background sources consulted and quoted, render BDB and invaluable resource for all students of the Bible.
