The best commentary to get on the book of Genesis 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a really good two volume commentary on Genesis. I like it better than Gordon Wenham's two volume work for several reasons: 1) It is easier to read. 2) There are many points where Hamilton focus on applying the text to the New Testament and to the practical Christian life, 3) you don't have to have a knowledge of hebrew to access this mammoth work. So if you're doing a Bible study on Genesis or if you're preaching through it, then this is the top of the line.

Editorial Review:

Hamilton's second volume on the Book of Genesis is part of The New International Commentary on the Old Testament, a series which devotes considerable care to achieving a balance between technical information and homiletic-devotional interpretation. The commentary proper is based on the author's own translation of the Hebrew text.

Editorial Review:

The Ten Commandments are the first direct communication between a people and God. Designed to elevate our lives above mere frantic, animal existence to the sublime levels humanity is capable or experiencing, they are the blueprint of God's expectations of us and His plan for a meaningful, just, loving, and holy life. Each commandment asserts a principle, and each principle is a moral focal point for real-life issues relating to God, family, sex, work, charity, property, speech, and thought. Written in collaboration with Rabbi Stewart Vogel, The Ten Commandments incorporates lively discussion of the Bible and the Judeo-Christian values derived from it. Filled with passion, emotion, and profound insights, it will move, enlighten, inspire, entertain, and educate you on the meaning each commandment has in our daily lives today:

  1. I am the Lord, your God, Who has taken you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

  2. You shall not recognize the gods of others in My presence.

  3. You shall not take the Name of the Lord., your God, in vain.

  4. Remember the Sabbath day and sanctify it.

  5. Honor your Father and your Mother.

  6. You shall not murder.

  7. You shall not commit adultery.

  8. You shall not steal.

  9. You shall not bear false witness against your fellow.

  10. You shall not covet.

A Good Commentary (Author Disagrees) 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Tremper Longman wrote this book and didn't want to admit that it was a commentary in the scholarly sense of the word. Well, I gotta tell ya, Tremper... the book's a commentary in the scholarly sense of the word!

Granted, Longman does not do a verse-by-verse exegesis or an elaborate Hebrew translation, but he does provide ample commentary on the subject in the Book of Genesis, some using professional scholarship as insight.

Even if the book is a professional commentary, I have to say that it certainly sets itself into a unique class amongst Biblical study texts. Longman writes How to Read Genesis for simple reading, and he does cover all topics of Genesis (some more than others). His writing style and what he found important to comment on was sometimes different than what I wanted to read. I found myself disagreeing a whole heck of a lot with his comments, too! (Maybe that's what he meant when denying that this book is a commentary - he added his opinion to some concepts that he felt were left open to speculation.)

Anyway, the greatest value I received from this book wasn't so much "how to read" the great Book of Genesis (because I found myself disagreeing so much with Longman), but from the background and comparative stories that the author provided. He didn't just present a straight commentary on Genesis - he offered insight to other civilizations, religions, and cultures during the supposed times that Genesis was written or was referencing. This, in many ways, offered a sort of "side story" which is great for adding to your Bible study.

I would recommend this book to anybody who has already read the Book of Genesis. I tried reading Longman's book alongside reading Genesis to see if I could get better insight that way, but it didn't work. The best value in Longman's book, I found, was just reading the Biblical version first, having those stories relatively fresh in my mind, and then going to Longman's book. In this way, my memory was not only jogged, but, like I said, the author's insights really opened my eyes even more to this ancient Scripture.

I would also recommend this book for group Bible study. Again, still read Genesis first, not alongside. Then, in Bible study, Longman's book will bring out certain issues for the group to discuss. I think you would have fun disagreeing (or agreeing) with the author on some of his points, all the while drawing out the full color of the Book of Genesis thanks to Longman's commentary.

So don't think of this as a "how to" book as the title would mislead us into thinking. This is a commentary and a comparative work, and certainly a very worthy one for all Bible students.

Editorial Review:

Honored in 2006 as a "Year's Best Book for Preachers" by Preaching magazine.Creation in six daysWoman from the side of man"Sons of god" taking "daughters of men"A massive disaster and an animal rescue boat of biblical proportionsAbraham, Sarah, Hagar and the ongoing saga of a dysfunctional familyThese are just a few of the episodes that Genesis conjures up. But we miss the point if we focus on what seems strange to us. And we distort the message if we demand that this book answer questions that are strange to it. To read Genesis intelligently, we must consider the questions, the literature and the times in which Genesis was written. In How to Read Genesis Tremper Longman III provides a welcome guide to reading and studying, understanding and savoring this panorama of beginnings--of both the world and of Israel. And importantly for Christian readers, we gain insight into how Genesis points to Christ and can be read in light of the gospel.

One of my All Time Favorite Commentaries - Deserves 10 Stars 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I love this book, it is truly a classic. Preaching doesn't get any better than this. I have read all 1,164 pages (except for the index) and used several red pencils to mark and annotate what I liked.

Ryken tells a story, while many commentaries just tell you facts. It seems every chapter points to Christ and applies to Christians. This book is loaded with details and facts, but what makes it great is the application to our lives and the glory that is given to Jesus in every chapter. Ryken doesn't go far without relating it to Jesus. It all comes back to Jesus. No wonder it is easy to enjoy. I have noticed a pattern in many chapters 1) first he explains the story of Exodus in its current setting, 2) next he shows how it points to Jesus, 3) then he shows how it applies to us as Christians, 4) and finally he often shows the future aspects and how it relates to the end times and heaven. What a great pattern for preaching and teaching. You cannot get bored when you do that. This pattern is not obvious at first, but by the middle of the book you know it is going to point to Jesus. You don't know how it will point to Jesus, but you can be sure it will. There are gems in here waiting to be discovered.

The book is loaded with numerous cross-references to the rest of the Bible. They are very helpful and add depth to the study. I have learned a lot about other parts of the Bible as well, such as Hebrews, 2 Corinthians, and Revelation. Actually, there is hardly a book of the Bible he has not touched on. Even Jonah quotes from the book of Exodus, when he says - "for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness".

We are all familiar with parts and pieces of the book of Exodus, but Philip Ryken has given Exodus a unity and flow from beginning to end. And now it all makes sense to me. There are pictures of our salvation in Exodus that I never saw nor appreciated before. He has a great ability to make it one great story from beginning to end.

If you have never taught or preached on Exodus, I believe you will after reading this.

I am using this book to teach an adult Sunday School Class. I have other great commentaries on Exodus, but I always read Ryken first. After that, there is no need to read anything else. He has given me so much that there is no need to look at the other books. I still spend a lot of time with the book of Exodus itself and try to make the lesson my own, but Ryken has been a tremendous help. He is a great teacher and communicator.

I stumbled across this book in the book store and had never heard of Philip Ryken - shame on me. Man was I pleasantly surprised. I loved the work by James M. Boice, and I was not sure any one could measure up to him. But I can honestly tell you that if you liked Boice you will love Ryken.

Editorial Review:

At once theologically instructive and decidedly practical, this commentary moves readers to great rejoicing at God's work in the life of every person following him on the path to spiritual freedom. Ryken skillfully relates how the Israelites deliverance from slavery anticipated the salvation accomplished in Jesus Christ, proving that God remembers his covenant and always delivers on his promises. For those who preach, teach, and study God's Word, this book is more than just a commentary; it is a celebration of God's faithfulness.

Satisfied for About 20 Years Using this Set 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This is a great set. I got it about 20 years ago when it first came out, and, as a pastor of over 23 years, I say "Go for it!" Although I do not refer to this work every week, it comes in handy when I need to do a Hebrew word study. Because it is cross-indexed with Strongs, you can find the Hebrew words (and their definitions/expansions) without knowing a stitch of Hebrew.

For practical ministry use, this is the set to get! It provides plenty of information, clear definitions, but does not get tedious (usually). I would recommend it over older studies which are not nearly as accurate (especially those done before the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in the 1940's).

A perfect blend of dictionary and commentary. 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament offers the perfect blend of dictionary and commentary. Words are grouped by root and derivations. Meanings are distilled from their Biblical contexts, and when these are few, brief excursions into cognate languages or extra-Biblical texts augment the articles. A grid of numerical codes ties into the perennial Strong index, which is also used in other works, for instance Green's Interlinear Bible (Hebrew-English). This allows a beginning student, who lacks knowledge of the Hebrew language, access to the wealth of grace and wisdom that is inherent to Scriptures but often lost in translations.

TWOTOT shows the combined effort of its 46 contributors plus editorial board, and is specifically designed for use by "the busy pastor or earnest Christian worker." This is to result "in the edification of the church of Christ through the assistance it may give to her ministers and His servants."

To anyone who desires to achieve a deeper understanding the Bible, this wordbook is invaluable.

Editorial Review:

This monumental reference work contains studies of all the important words of the Old Testament and is particularly written for the busy pastor or church worker who may not possess all the technical tools of Bible scholarship.

Hopeful Immagination - learning from past mistakes 5 out of 5 stars.
46 of 47 people found this review helpful.

This is the second book I have read by Brueggemann on the role of the Prophetic in the life of the Kingdom of God. He uses the books of Jeremiah, Ezekiel and what he terms `second' Isaiah as his source texts, and with them he puts forward a highly plausable, and yet quite incredible argument for the legitimation of the prophetic role within the church.

His theme in dealing with Jeremiah is principally grief. If we want the new thing that God wants to bring about, we must first grieve over the old state. That old state of sin and rigid structure, where God has become a rubber stamp for the wishes of the "managers of the Status quo." God will not put new wine in old wine skins. To bring in the new he will first dismantle the old and then cause new birth and new life to occur.

This part I believe has some major things to say to the church of New Zealand (and possibly to the whole western church structure) right now. The church is coming to the end of a life cycle where the `modern' style and structures are becoming redundant, along with those who try to support them. All too often the ministers and pastors of New Zealand churches are in their 50's and 60's, and they appear to have little understanding of the new structures required to cater for the up and coming `post modern' mind set. Brueggeman contends that many of these church leaders are like those leaders in Jeremiah's time who thought that they could maintain the present religious structure of their day. But God had the exile in mind.

Brueggemann then looks at Ezekiel who was a priest. His concern is with holiness and purity and doing things God's way. These chapters are tough to read as they start with personal holiness (by implication) and then shine the spot light squarely upon the church. Ezekiel was sent to the people of God, and his criticism of the lack of holiness is aimed at them, and at us the church.

The last part of the book is one about memory, and remembering what God has done in the past andthen using those memories as a spark of hope for the future. We are not to live in the "eternal today", as the purveyors of maintaining the present structures would want. We are to remember our past, and hope for the future that God promises. Only then will change occur, when the church starts dreaming of a different future than the one presently presented.

The change from our ways to God's ways will hurt, cause grief, be about purity and refining, but will result in purpose and hope and a church that can fulfill her calling. Brueggemann contents that the function of the church is that of a holy community that models holiness and compassion, being governed by the will and methods of the Kingdom of God.

The book has been quite life changing for me. It has opened my eyes to so much of the purpose of the prophetic, it's hassles and joys, and has caused me to have hope for our church and our national church community. It has also given me understanding as to why so many churches (including my own) spurn the prophetic ministry. The prophet is one who stands up and challenges the status quo, and those who support it. Ie. the church leaders. Of course there will be conflict, and rejection and trial. But now that I understand it, somehow that makes it easier.

This book is for those who wish to see the church really become the community of faith that God desires, and for those damaged prophets who need some encouragement to carry on doing what God has called them to.

Editorial Review:

Professor Brueggemann here examines the literature and experience of an era in which Israel's prophets faced the pastoral responsibility of helping people to enter into exile, to be in exile, and to depart out of exile. He addresses three major prophetic traditions: Jeremiah (the pathos of God), Ezekiel (the holiness of God), and 2 Isaiah (the newness of God). This literature is seen to contain the theological resources for handling both brokenness and surprise — with freedom, courage, and imagination. Throughout, Brueggemann demonstrates how these resources offer vitality for ministry today.

Paul's writings 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The New Interpreter's Bible is a twelve-volume series, updating the popular Interpreter's Bible from a few decades ago. There are several key features common to all of the volumes of this series. First, each includes a two-column, double translation of the Biblical text (NIV - New International Version, and NRSV - New Revised Standard Version) arranged by topical unit or story. Then, they provide commentaries that look at the passages as a whole, as well as verse-by-verse. Third, interesting Reflection pieces that relate the passages to each other, to history, and to current concerns occur at the conclusion of each passage. Fourth, introductory articles for each book are provided that discuss transmission, historical background, cultural setting, literary concerns, and current scholarship. Finally, there are general articles about the Bible, each Testament, and various types of literature (Narrative, Gospel, Wisdom Literature, etc.) are provided to give general placement and knowledge about the text overall.

The list of contributors, editors, and consultants on the project is a veritable Who's Who of biblical and theological scholarship, representing all major traditions and schools of thought liberal and conservative. Leander Keck, of the Yale Divinity School, is the primary editor of the series.

The volumes were published individually, and can be purchased individually, which is a good thing, given that they are a bit expensive. But for any serious biblical scholar, preacher, student, or enthusiast, they are invaluable.

--Volume XI--

The eleventh volume of the New Interpreter's Bible is the volume that completes the Pauline corpus in the New Testament, from 2 Corinthians to Philemon. Some of these letters are undisputed from Paul; others are of questionable attestation. (1 Corinthians and Romans, other Pauline letters, are to be found in the tenth volume.) Each letter is introduced with an essay exploring dating, place, linguistic issues, and topical/theological issues.

J. Paul Sampley of Boston University introduces 2 Corinthians. One of the primary issues for 2 Corinthians is that the text is most likely made up of more than one letter, but there is a wide variance of opinion regarding the sequencing, number and contexts of the pieces.

Richard Hays of Duke University addresses Galatians. Hays looks both at the significant theological issues and the pastoral concerns addressed by Paul in this letter.

Pheme Perkins (who has contributed to other volumes of this series) of Boston College explores Ephesians in this volume. Perkins looks at issues of authorship as well as issues of the substance of the text, theologically and linguistically.

Morna Hooker of Cambridge writes about Philippians. 'The characteristic note of Paul's letter to the Philippians is above all that of joy - a remarkable feature, in view of the fact that this letter was written in prison, where its author was held under a capital charge!' Despite Philippi's small size, it provided an important opening in Paul's mission.

Andrew Lincoln of Cheltenham and Gloucester College addresses Colossians, looking at the text of the short letter as well as the large body of work generated exploring the possibilities of exactly what it is that Colossians opposes.

Abraham Smith of Andover-Newton looks at both letters to the Thessalonians. The letters differ in significant ways, leading many to believe that they were written by different authors. Smith explores the evidence and arguments for this.

James Dunn of the University of Durham explores both letters to Timothy and the letter to Titus. 'The Pastoral Epistles - 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus - are among the most valued of New Testament writings. Yet the Pastorals are among the most discredited of NT writings. Why this paradox?' With this intriguing opening, Dunn looks at issues of theology, ecclesiology, and pastoral intent, as well as possible socio-political underpinnings and questions about the authorship.

Cain Hope Felder of Howard University finishes this volume with Philemon, the shortest of the Pauline letters, a mere 335 words in the original Greek. Philemon is unique in many ways, ways which Felder explores introducing the book.

High praise goes to the general editorial staff for working with such strong authors/scholars, that their work fits together well as part of this set while retaining their individual characteristics (much like the writers of the Bible itself!).

Now a classic work for the study of the Prophets. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Bullock's Introduction has now become a classic work in the field of the biblical Prophets. It covers each book of the Old Testament prophets in a thorough and consistent mannor. The author provides a wealth of background material and addresses problematic questions or texts as they relate to each prophet. Outlines for each book are provided as well as a brief summary of the message and key theological points. The book is written from an evangelical perspective, certainly a strength, as it pays careful attention to the biblical text and the intent of the prophet. This is an excellent introduction and summary to the prophets and highly recommended for any who want to further their knowledge about the prophets and recent areas of discussion.

An excellent intro to Poetry and Wisdom in the Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Bullock's book is a perfect addition for any student of the Bible. His work is thorough and fair. He considers numerous opinions about authorship, canonicty and interpretation presenting them competently and without bias, then explains his reasons for his perspective, which usually lands in the evangelical camp. He also does fine work presenting cognate literature from other ancient cultures. This book can be used as a college textbook or even in seminaries and graduate schools. For new students, it will take some work, but that work will be well rewarded. Any reader will gain insight into the five books of the Bible - Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs and Job - covered in depth in this fine work.

Editorial Review:

A revision of the book that is already a standard in Old Testament studies. An inspiring look into the breadth and power of Israel's wisdom and poetry.

An excellent Bible study for the young & old. You will not be disappointed with purchasing this book!

Editorial Review:

In the desire and quest to make sense of the world and our existence, three great sirens have lured men and women into a lull with the empty promise to make their lives meaningful. The great king of Israel, Solomon, though the wisest man, was not immune to their song. But at the end of his life, Solomon, in all of his God-given wisdom, stopped to contemplate on all that competed for his attention. He wrote his conclusions in the Book of Ecclesiastes.

Tommy Nelson continues his study of Solomon's writings by taking an in-depth look at Ecclesiastes. In a world such as ours, where the search for meaning and purpose propels mankind to try everything under the sun, Solomon's conclusions ring louder than ever for a people who need answers more than ever.

Editorial Review:

Turn the Scriptures over to Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg and what do you get? A unique blend of brilliant literary insights and theological wisdom, derived from a lifelong immersion in rabbinic traditions and lore. With amazing literary sensitivity, Zornberg ingeniously breathes new life into Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Jacob and Esau, Rachel, and Joseph. The author's vibrant spirit, charming personality, and infectious enthusiasm for the Bible draw the reader into the search for meaning where real life and the biblical story intersect. The Beginning Of Desire imaginatively interweaves biblical, rabbinic, and literary sources into a colorful tapestry that is both intellectually stimulating and personally uplifting.

One of the Jewish biblical scholars scheduled to appear on the Bill Moyers PBS special on Genesis, Avivah Zornberg employs an amazing repertoire of literary sources to engage the audience and illuminate the text. Delivering her erudition in a pleasantly lyrical style, the author shares her experience of God with the world. It is an intimate, personal, and revealing encounter no one should miss.
