Concise and Scholarly! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This volume should be in every serious student of the OT library. Pastors especially should delve into this concise yet reasonable volume.

I highly recommend this volume.

An excellent concise overview 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Professor's Dillard and Longman's Introduction to the Old Testament is an outstanding resource for understanding the literary, theological, and historical background of every Old Testament book. It is evangelical in its perspective, yet interacts with historical - cricial methods of interpretation that have been prominent over the past 100 + years or so.

A typical overview of each Old Testament book will start with an overview, useful commentaries and articles for each book, the historical background (date, author, and purpose), a literary analysis of the structure of the book, its theological message and how it applies to the New Testament.

The reader of the book will find an outstanding reference book for understanding and studying the individual books of the Old Testament. A real strength of this book is its description of the literary style of a book and what that means for the reader. Yet, the authors warn wisely that while it is important to take into account the book's literary context for the reader, the importance of understanding a particular Old Testament book, the importance of placing literary context within the historical context is paramount.

The authors make solid use of previous scholarship in their introductions for each book, even wisely dividing what is useful from the neo-orthodox and critical scholars and what is not.

This reference book will be of great use to ministers, lay teachers and the general student of the Bible.

Editorial Review:

Several distinctives set this volume apart from other introductions to the Old Testament: - It is thoroughly evangelical in its perspective. - It emphasizes "special introduction" -- the study of individual books. -It interacts in an irenic spirit with the historical-critical method. - It features high points of research history and representative scholars rather than an exhaustive treatment of past scholarship. - It deals with the meaning of each book, not in isolation but in a canonical context. - It probes the meaning of each book in the setting of its culture. With an eye on understanding the nature of the Old Testament historiography, An Introduction to the Old Testament offers the reader a solid understanding of three key issues: historical background, literary analysis, and theological message.

A Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

In the feild of O.T. Eschatology, it is almost impossible not to reference Dr. Walvoord. This book is indepth. I love the fact that he does justice to the various views that he dealt with concerning the book of Daniel. He is a scholar and a gentleman. The material in this book would be considered seminary level. Anyone interested in learning more about the book of Daniel should get this book. I would just about equal this book to Leon Wood's commentary on Daniel.

Editorial Review:

This Walvoord masterpiece presents the beauties of Daniel's prophecies in the light of modern archaeological evidence. Companion to The Revelation of Jesus Christ, this major contribution to prophetic research emphasizes the value and genuineness of Daniel. It considers: Alleged historical inaccuracies Difficult-to-interpret phrases Apocryphal additions Major textual problems Use of Persian and Greek words Historical background of Bible events Past and future fulfillments of specific propheciesDaniel goes beyond a mere presentation of the author's interpretation of Old Testament prophecy. It quotes Bible scholars from different corners of the theological ring to help the reader discover the meaning of Scripture for himself.Unusually thorough and well outlined, this commentary captures the heartbeat of a young prophet who spoke boldly for God.

Editorial Review:

Most people know that Genesis, the first book of the Bible and the first of the Five Books of Moses, tells the story of creation. Lesser-known is the story behind Genesis and how this backstory can be used to connect with a higher realm. Kabbalah teaches that Genesis provides an understanding of the universe on a seed level, and thus its lessons can help seekers reach their full potential. This new rendition of Genesis forms a bridge between the Zohar (Kabbalah's sacred text) and the Torah or Bible. The first in a projected five-volume series (all Five Books of Moses), Genesis is edited by noted scholar and teacher Yehuda Berg and features contributions by legendary Kabbalists Rav Yehuda Ashlag, Rav Yehuda Brandwein, and Rav P. S. Berg. Presented in a handsome hardcover edition, Genesis comes in a user-friendly format, printed front-to-back with the Hebrew and English on facing pages.

Editorial Review:

The Tent of Abraham is the first book to tell the entire story of Abraham and to reenergize it as a basis for peace. Written by three leaders belonging to different faiths, the book explores in accessible language the mythic quality and the teachings of reconciliation that are embedded in the Torah, the Qur'an, and the Bible.

"The stories of our common ancestors told in this book with such creative imagination inspire all of us to build community across the walls that normally divide us." —Bob Edgar, general secretary, National Council of Churches

Perfect for narrative preaching. 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I used this book as a key reference when preparing a sermon on the life of Abraham. Brueggmann provides plenty of fascinating insight and details that can help make the biblical story come to life, touching the heart as well as the mind.

One of the best commentaries on Genesis ever 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best commentaries I have ever read and by far the best I have read on Genesis. Like all the commentaries in the series, this is a preaching commentary and I find his handing of the creation narrative as a proclamation of sovereignty to be excellent. I wish I had found this commentary much earlier in my journey.

Not the intended audience 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I give this book 2 stars not because it is a bad book, but because it does not serve a purpose for me. This book is really geared towards the preacher or teacher looking to use the author's interpretation as a framework for their exposition of Genesis. As I am not a preacher or, formally, a teacher, this book was not worth the time for me to read. I recommend the Word Biblical Commentary by Wenham or the New American Commentary by Matthews instead of this one.

Editorial Review:

Each biblical book is presented for its most effective use by teacher or preacher, taking into consideratoin its centra purpose, its use in the liturgical and confessional tradition and in lectionaries, and its special significance for Christian ethics and theology.

If you are the type of Christian who wants to live in apathy, complacency or mediocrity, DO NOT read this book. Recommended for conservative Christians 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

If you are a conservative Christian with strong fundamentalist leanings you will find this an excellent survey of the Old Testament books. If you are not then you will probably find difficulty with many portions of it. However, you may still find value in the large number of photographs, charts, tables, and graphs.

The author does an excellent of distilling chapters of information into tables that clearly show the relationships. For example, he has illustrations of the chronological relationship between the Old Testament books (no the Bible does not have them in chronological order), God's covenants with Israel, and a chronology of Israel's judges. Hardly a page goes by without a picture, illustration, chart, or other visual aid to help the reader understand the author's comments. However, some of the pictures belong more in a tourist pamphlet than a serious Bible survey book. (For example, there are pictures of places "tradition" assigns as significant, like the "burial place" of Samuel. There is no evidence of this being factual but even in the Middle Ages traders recognized the value of having a religiously significant location within your city. So, many "traditional" sites suddenly sprang up.) Fortunately these sorts of pictures are few in number when compared with the large number that enhances the text.

While the mainstream or more liberal Christian may find something of value in the charts and tables, "Survey of the Old Testament" is really recommended mainly for conservative Christian readers who will find it a valuable resource strongly slanted toward that belief system.

Editorial Review:

In Survey of the Old Testament, with an overview of individual books, Paul Benware helps readers see the magnificent unity and the central theme of the Old Testament. Benware also helps readers understand God's covenant promises to Israel.

Editorial Review:

The Old Testament is the story of God’s promises to his people. Below its somewhat obscure surface is hidden magnificent truth about the love and power of God. Throughout its pages the reader can find promise after promise from God, all of which are fulfilled in the New Testament—in the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Author Mark Dever introduces readers to the Old Testament as a glorious whole so that they are able to see the big picture of the majesty of God and the wonder of his promises.

“For many Christians the Old Testament is daunting and confusing. The books are long and speak about a culture dramatically different from ours. Mark Dever’s sermons do not substitute for reading the Old Testament, but they do provide a wonderful help in understanding it. Dever unpacks the major themes of each book with remarkable clarity, and the book also shines in conveying the message of the Old Testament for today. Here is a survey to the Old Testament that is accessible and spiritually edifying.”
Thomas R. Schreiner
Professor of New Testament, Associate Dean of Scripture and Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“To hear the Bible tell its own story in its own way—this is the obvious but all-too-rare strategy for reading the Book of books. I thank Dr. Mark Dever for showing us how. We are immeasurably enriched.”
Ray Ortlund, Jr.
Senior Pastor, Christ Presbyterian Church, Nashville

“This is a bold project, some might say foolhardy, but Mark Dever has brilliantly succeeded. This is no mere textbook; it is powerful preaching. We are not only introduced to the sweep and message of each book of the Bible but, above all, confronted by our great God and called to obey his living word.”
Vaughn Roberts
Rector, St. Ebbe’s Church, Oxford, England, Author of God’s Big Picture

“In these distinctive overview sermons, Mark Dever manages to bring together around the core issues of each biblical book three concerns that ought to occupy every faithful preacher of God’s Word: theological content, exegetical wisdom, and pastoral application. Here is a walk through the Bible that is well worth taking!”
Timothy George
Dean, Beeson Divinity School, Executive Editor, Christianity Today

“Mark Dever has done the Christian community a great service in publishing these sermons. The material is academically informed but presented in a very accessible way with relevant application. With its Christological focus and careful Christian application of the Old Testament, this book enables readers to get into the theological heart of the message of each biblical book.”
David Peterson
Principal, Oak Hill College

“Mark Dever has written a needed book and written it well. With a pastor’s heart, a scholar’s mind, and the intimacy of a friend, Dever introduces the reader clearly and creatively to a book that has changed the world but to which contemporary culture remains largely unexposed. This book is warm, engaging, straightforward, and profound. It will be a valuable resource for individuals, study groups, churches, unbelievers and believers alike. Dever takes the reader on an unforgettable journey into the most remarkable and moving book ever written.”
John Shouse
Professor of Christian Theology, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary

“This is a good book, written by a pastor/scholar for people in the pew. Clear, concise, thoroughly readable. Buy two and give one to a friend.”
Alistair Begg
Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio

“I have long desired a book that would unlock the richness of the Old Testament—assisting both the pastor in the pulpit and Christians in their devotions. This is that book.”

Very informative book, but the authors ride the fence 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I thought that this was a really interesting textbook. The authors reveal the message of each Old Testament book, while discussing some of the scholarly issues surrounding each part of the Old Testament (such as the JEDP theory). Unfortunately William Lasor passed away in 1991, so Hubbard (who is dead now too) and Bush recruited six other OT scholars to complete the revision. This may be one of the reasons why the authors ride the fence on issues such as whether or not we can take the numbers in Numbers literally, the number of Isaiah's, the historical worthiness of Joshua and Jonah, and the happenings surrounding the Exodus from Egypt. The authors also seem to lean toward the book of Jonah being a parable rather than actual history, although they don't take a really strong stand on that, either.

The reviewer who wrote that this book supports the JEDP theory was mistaken: In fact, the authors predict that this theory will eventually be out of vogue with scholarship. What the authors do affirm is that Moses was originally responsible for the Pentateuch and that through the centuries, the community revised and updated it.

And contrary to an earlier reviewer, I didn't find the book tedious at all: It was very well written and very interesting throughout. I especially appreciated the articles at the end about the Authority of the Old Testament for Christians, Messianic prophecy, and the chronological puzzle.

In short, I recommend this book, only wishing that the authors would take a stand on some of the issues discussed above.

A Survery of the Old Testament - Second Edition 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have found this book to be estremely informative and ehlpful in my studies. It is obvious that the authors, Andrew E. Hill and John H. Walton, really put a lot of time and effort into this work. The information it contains puts the Old Testament Scriptures into proper perspective and shows it relevance to me as a New Testament believer. I am especially delighted at how the authors present the Old Testament from the vantage point of the geographical setting, incorporating the culture of the time. Consequently, I am able to properly apply the scriptures, without compromising the context, to circumstances in my own time and culture. Two Thumbs up!!
