Excellent!!!! A Great Tool. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

For those who posted negative comments, I would strongly recommend getting an Interlinear Greek/Hebrew Bible with Strong's numbering. For me, this is an awesome tool to have in your Christian arsenal, but if you don't have an Interlinear Greek Bible it may seem confusing since the entries are listed numerically according to Strong's numbering system. For me, I wouldn't want this book without the Interlinear Bible.

You won't be disappointed if you use this tool the way it was meant to be used. A hammer will disappoint you if you use it to paint your living room. But to hammer a nail...

Unlike the Strong's "Exhaustive" Concordance, the type size is a pleasant size (12 point, I'm guessing) and the overall size of the book is not so massive that it makes it unmanageable.

I love this book and recommend it to anyone wanting to get their feet wet in the understanding of Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic.

Editorial Review:

The famous Strong's Hebrew and Greek dictionaries are now offered in a separate volume. This unabridged, fully corrected, updated version includes a completely new and exclusive English word index showing which Greek and Hebrew words are translated into specific English words, how often each translation occurs, and brief definitions. It is set in enlarged, easy-to-read type.

More Than Pleased with My Unger's Bible Dictionary! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This particular Bible dictionary is by far the most complete for reference work when studying Scripture. By looking up particular people, places, and events, I have come to a far better understanding while studying. I would not hesitate to recommend this dictionary to anyone who wants the absolute best.

Quickly received but the condition was a little disappointing. 3 out of 5 stars.

We received the quite quickly. However, the spine on the book was broken and there was no mention of that in the description.

Wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book-- great photos and information. Just needs more words to define. Great product for the person who wants to start a real bible study.

Book spine and cover damaged upon reciept returned. 1 out of 5 stars.

The book was damaged upon reciept, the spine was broken and the book cover had a deep scratch the book was supposed to be new

A true "one-stop shop" for bible dictionaries 5 out of 5 stars.

Although this is the first bible dictionary i've purchased, it has already in many ways exceeded my expectations. I find that alot of the questions I have ever had, particularly about the old testament, are often answered just by flipping through the pages. A very great value for Bible study.

Editorial Review:

Defines and clarifies unfamiliar names of persons, places and objects in the Bible. Contains more than a million words, 6,779 articles, and 500 photographs. Fully updated and usable with all major Bible translations. (More than 881,000 in print)

Authoritatively second to none... 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 28 people found this review helpful.

'The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church', edited by the late F.L. Cross and E. A. Livingstone, is perhaps the authoritative, one-volume encyclopedia of information on Christianity. With over 480 contributors, from a myriad of denominational backgrounds, this book has a completeness that is unrivalled. Scholars from Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and other denominations, as well as Jewish and secular authorities from all over the world, have written or contributed to articles that reflect as best possible an unbiased and authoritative compilation of history, theology, liturgy, scriptural study, art, biographies, denominational and calendrical organisation, and inter-religious attitudes.

The current edition, published in 1997, is the third edition of the ODCC to appear since its was first issued in 1957. It has an unrivalled reputation since first being published by Oxford don and cleric F.L. Cross. After his death, Dr. E.A. Livingstone took the helm to oversee production of the current volume.

There is increased coverage of the Eastern Churches, certain issues in moral theology, and developments stemming from the Second Vatican Council. Numerous new entries have been added and the extensive bibliographies have been brought up to date. Readers are provided with over 6,000 authoritative cross-referenced entries covering all aspects of the subject.

The book is over 1750 pages in length, very much the ready reference rather than the narrative sort, but many of the longer articles provide depth and detail, and articles generally include references for further research at the conclusion.

Topical entries include:

Theology
Discussion of theological topics from the earliest days of creeds and heresies to current topics on Christology, ecclesiology, sacramental theology, and other topics Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox.

Patristic Scholarship
The early Church Fathers are covered in detail, particularly in creedal development. Likewise, recent scholarship on Nag Hammadi writings, newer Augustinian sermon discoveries, new scholarship on Gnosticism, and established work on early church history are included in the articles.

Churches and Denominations
Beliefs and organisation of the major denominations are covered, as well as lesser-known and smaller denominations such as the Amish, Shakers, Old Catholics (my own denomination); as well as particular national structures and variants on the Christian scene.

Church Calendar and Organisation
This includes feast days, saints days, calender issues (such as the date of Easter), sacramental and liturgical systems, rites, church and canon law, and discussion of religious orders.

The Bible
An entry on each book of the Bible, including apocryphal and deutero-canonical scriptures, as well as entries on major Biblical figures are included along with major schools of thought on scriptural interpretation and study.

Biographical Entries
Saints, popes, reformers, church leaders, mystics, heretics, kings and emperors, theologians, philosophers, artists, musicians and poets are included among the many people with an impact on Christianity.

New Entries
These entries include ecumenical dialogues, ethics of procreation, contraception and abortion issues, theology of religions and different religions, articles on Black Churches, C.S. Lewis, and the Holiness Movement.

I find this an almost indispensable reference book. Priced at suggested retail of [retail price], it is unfortunately out of the reach of most of those who need it most -- seminary students. But it belongs on the shelf of anyone who has intention of being scholarly in their approach to Christianity.

Editorial Review:

The third edition of this unrivaled book focuses on the important changes in academic opinion and church organization within the past few years. Extensively revised and updated, it contains increased coverage on Eastern churches, issues in moral theology, and developments stemming from the Second Vatican Council. New entries have been added on a diverse array of subjects including the ordination of women, the quest of the historical Jesus, and bibliographies.

Invaluble Research Tool 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I actually purchased this from a bookstore back in 1988-89, then it was priced at over $100! I got it at a discount because there was a flaw in the binding. I wanted a Bible study resource that went beyond the concordances that were available at the time. Compared to some of the other Bible dictionaries that I've used this one reads more like an encyclopedia. It combines archaeological, anthropologic, and ancient historical data to give one a completely unbiased account of Biblical related facts. Another cool thing is the magnificent pictures of ancient artifacts spread throughout. I don't possess another reference book that comes close. I'm thinking of purchasing another because I've used this one so much in the last 20 years that it's starting to fall apart. It's worth the money.

Editorial Review:

For the maps alone, this book is worth it. Following 1,250 pages that describe and explain the people, places, terms, and events of the Bible from Aaron to Zurishaddai, the 16 spectacular maps detail the political entities and boundaries of biblical times, bringing the historic times to vivid life. A fascinating book, an impressive collection of scholarship, and a possession to cherish, the 188 contributors and five editors show what can be produced if you don't cut corners on excellence.

More than Meets the Eye 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This little gem has more than meets the eye. Granted, it is a conservative (but not lacking in information) approach, but avoids the liberal academic pitfalls so often found in their literature (critical analysis etc). This is a user friendly book, thick in size and content is generous. Most of all it comes across trustworthy and reliable, not full of conjecture. A quiet authoritive spiritual treatment without the heavy-handness to go with it. I have used one for years after using many others of the same genre and I prefer Holman's for overall satisfaction after reading it.

Low quality book with higher quality content 3 out of 5 stars.

Do you get what you pay for when you purchase one of the cheaper dictionaries? Yes and no. The book itself reminds you from the moment you open it that it was cheap: the paper is not the best quality around; the book creaks and groans as you page through it (just how long will it be before the spine cracks and breaks?); the quality of the photos is, in general, nothing short of abominable (in the 1960's and 1970's they would have been acceptable).
The dictionary entries are good, if you like conservative biblical scholarship. Reference to various (modern) translations of the bible makes it quite a useful book. But one essential ingredient of a good scholarly work is missing: a bibliography. Of the three dictionaries I know (Eerdmans, HarperCollins and this one from Holman), the Holman is the only one totally lacking any kind of bibliography. For the lay-user maybe not a problem. For an academic user a great problem. I would advise academic users to consider either the Eerdmans or the HarperCollins publications.
For the lay-user this is a useful publication at a good price. For academic users this might be handy to have as a second dictionary but it is, thanks to its lack of a bibliography, unsuitable as a sole work of reference.

Only for creative, fearless thinkers 5 out of 5 stars.

Response to 1984 nonsense comments:
Charles Fillmore's Metaphysical Bible Dictionary is one man's attempt to expand his own spiritually. Many others have found it to be a very good starting place from which to interact with God or Spirit He never intended it to be static, and it hasn't been. Those with open minds and hearts who have encountered it have seen it as an aid along the path to greater understanding of their personal relationship with God.
Those who spend so much time criticizing others' beliefs cannot possibly have time to develop any of their own, which leads me to believe they must be "followers" of someone's words. Most organized religions sprang from the dissatisfaction of an individual with the status quo, and their search soon became someone else's dogma.
As for Truth with a capital T, it is merely Fillmore's attempt to differentiate what he came to view as God's truth versus the twisted truths of man. Every organixed religion considers their truth as God's truth with a capital T. However, some are accepting of others' views and some are not. Obviously, the religious affiliation of the "reader from San Francisco" does not.
If you want a place to begin to dig deeper into the possibilities that await you in the scriptures through the experience of someone else, the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary is a great platform from which to catch a train that can take you away from the insecurities, fears, and small mindedness of those like the reader from S.F.

Editorial Review:

This one-of-a-kind volume presents the esoteric meanings of names and people, places, key words, and phrases found in the Bible. The ideas presented in this Bible reference book are based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and are presented in a cross- denominational format.
