Meditation for Beginners 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a very easy way to get started with meditation. Jack Kornfield is one of the most informative instructors for meditation.

"Sleep is wonderful . . . but it's different than meditation." 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

MEDITATION FOR BEGINNERS is a very helpful CD/book combination package. The book is slender and a bit poetical, more a staging item for the CD than anything else.

The CD features Jack Kornfeld guiding the novice meditator through a series of four meditations with breathing exercises. Not surprisingly, the majority of this disc consists of silence. The beginner will find Kornfeld's gentle reminders to "watch your breath" or "let go of that thought" very helpful, though the more experienced meditator will be able to largely disregard the occasional commentary.

This CD makes an excellent introductory presentation of the practice of Vipassana Meditation or Zazen; what is particularly helpful, especially for the practitioner sitting at home or meditating alone, is the discretely timed sittings, each ending with a chime (inkin). Thus the meditator can relax and worry not at all about the passage of time.

This is largely a pragmatic user's guide; the disc lacks any discussion of "theory" or any references to the various schools and forms of meditative practice. In sum, it's the Sounds of Silence.

Editorial Review:

For readers who have thought about trying meditation but weren’t sure how to get started, Meditation for Beginners presents a complete introduction to "Insight" meditation with bestselling author and trusted teacher Jack Kornfield. Through step-by-step instruction in everything from breathing, posture, and attention to working with difficult emotions and physical discomfort, readers from any spiritual tradition will learn the essentials for creating a daily meditation practice. CD includes five guided meditation sessions to help cultivate the inner tranquility, natural joy, and mental clarity that are just some of the fruits of meditation.

Use This Tool Daily 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book and I'm so glad I did! I'm using it every day, speaking God's Word for my life and the positive changes are really remarkable. This is the most useful book I've ever seen by Joyce Meyer and I just can't say enough about it. I'd rate it 10 stars if that were possible. Besides the content itself, this is a really well-made book, very sturdy and small enough to take along in my purse.

Many times when people are praying, they are just speaking to God about their problems. This is faithless prayer and God cannot change anything in your life when you don't ask with faith. God already knows about the situation and think about it this way...God says His Word will never go void, but that He watches over His Word to bring it to pass. When you speak God's Word over situations in your life, situations are guaranteed to improve. Speaking God's Word has caused my faith to grow enormously.

The book is broken down into different topics like courage, health, depression, finance and so many more. Get this book and start using it today!!! God will bless you like never before. Also get "God's Master Plan For Your Life" by Gloria Copeland. It's awesome! I pray that God begins to bless you in every area of your life as you put this foundational principle to work!

Editorial Review:

Bestselling author Meyer teaches readers how to create change in their lives and truly receive God's blessings. Includes powerful Scriptures covering over 50 topics, including patience, loneliness, wisdom, and more.

His Holy Name!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This translation is inspiring! One of the few translations to include the Holy Name Yahweh. I regret that possible future editions will revert back to using Lord rather than using Yahweh. Get this treasure while you can.

New Jerusalem bible 4 out of 5 stars.

I love the New Jerusalem Bible. It's the only translation I love to read. I already own one but, it has very small type. I bought this one for the larger type and supposed more notes. It does have larger type. I was expecting it to have more cross references, foot notes and information. It only has one map.
It's still the best version around, Catholic or not. Most accurate and I too, love to see "Yahweh" in the Bible. It's very fluid to read.

Editorial Review:

The New Jerusalem Bible: Standard Edition will satisfy the great need for an authoritative version of "the greatest story ever told" in a package so attractive, user friendly, and affordable, this edition is destined to become a classic. Using the same translation that has been hailed as "truly magnificent" (Journal of Bible Literature), the Standard Edition has a completely redesigned interior, set in a two-column format for easy reading. With all the best features of much more cumbersome and costly versions, this Bible is a must-have for home, church, and school.

Your were There: at the Manger ... 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed using this little book during this past Advent and Christmas. Walter Wangerin Jr. has used his wonderful gift writing to give us a series of daily meditations that are a great help in focusing the mind, heart and imagination of the reader on the deepest significance of Christmas. We follow the events of the first Christmas from with scripture accompanied by short writings, poetry and prayer. Wangerin's writing varies between dramatization, exposition and application of the Christmas story to our lives. If you relax and let the author and the Holy Spirit have their way, the book will help you break through the confusion and frenzied cultural activity that often accompany Advent and touch the deeper meaning of the season. It doesn't drop you after Christmas Day but carries you through the 12 days of Christmas, gently releasing you at the beginning of Epiphany. It will leave you feeling like you've been there: at the Manger and help you go and live out the significance of Christ's coming to us in your own life.

I highly recommend this book, I thought it was even more effective than Wangerin's similar--and also very good--book for Lent and Easter, "Reliving the Passion".

Editorial Review:

In this Advent and Christmas devotional, best-selling author Walter Wangerin Jr. takes the reader day-by-day through the major events and characters leading up to the birth of Jesus. (36 meditations.)

Pocket-sized inspiration 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Jack Kornfield has written a small book that packs a powerful and inpirational punch. Forgiveness, lovingkindess and peace are three attributes that lead to a happy life.

The 3 attributes are explained through stories and quotes from people like the Buddha, Benjamin Franklin and Nelson Mandela. And at the conclusion of the writings on each of the attributes are meditations.

One comment on peace from Kornfield's book that really hit home with me was, "Peace requires us to surrender our illusions of control. We can love and care for others but we cannot possess our children, lovers, family, or friends. We can assist them, pray for them, and wish them well, yet in the end their happiness and suffering depend on their thoughts and actions, not on our wishes."

Editorial Review:

You hold in your hand an invitation:

To remember the transforming power of forgiveness and lovingkindness. To remember that no matter where you are and what you face, within your heart peace is possible.

In this beautiful and graceful little book, internationally renowned Buddhist teacher and meditation master Jack Kornfield has collected age-old teachings, modern stories, and time-honored practices for bringing healing, peace, and compassion into our daily lives. Just to read these pages offers calm and comfort. The practices contained here offer meditations for you to discover a new way to meet life’s greatest challenges with acceptance, joy, and hope.

A practical and reliable spiritual guide 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This volume is a practical, experience-based guide to the twin Ignatian practices of meditation and contemplation. Distilling from years of spiritual direction and retreat work, and drawing freely from the insights of well-known figures in the Catholic mystical tradition, Fr. Gallagher walks the reader through the various moments in Ignatian spirituality. The use of actual stories helps keep the presentation easy to understand and shows how, in practice, a person of prayer will often move gently from one stage of reflection to another, depending on the needs of the heart.

Readers of the author's other works will find this one closest in style to his Examen Prayer(The Examen Prayer: Ignatian Wisdom for Our Lives Today), with its weaving together of experience and Ignatian theory, though Meditation and Contemplation proves to be even more accessible than that volume. As well, its treatment of various forms of spirituality, including the often ignored colloquy, expands upon the single-topic focus of the earlier book.

Those with little experience in the life of prayer might wish to start with Fr. Gallagher's Examen Prayer, which outlines a practice remarkably easy to begin and endlessly varied in its fruits. Those who already have some experience but are wishing to move deeper in their practice, including Catholic practice related to daily and weekly Mass and the reading of scripture, would find many of the lessons in this volume easy to apply to their lives, as well as gaining reassurance when, as often happens, their own experiences follow patterns so well identified and articulated by Ignatius centuries ago.

Editorial Review:

The cornerstones of Ignatius of Loyola’s spiritual practice—meditation and contemplation—are clearly explained in this simple guide to the Ignatian method with examples from the experience of practitioners and quotations from Catholic spiritual teachers. In the process, the deeper structure of the spiritual practice is illuminated, and advice about adapting it to individual needs is offered. Topics include methods of praying, struggles and growth, and the importance and role of grace. Individuals who desire to pray with scripture, spiritual directors, and all who teach prayer with scripture will benefit from the counsel in this resource.

Before There Was Rob Bell, Anne Lamott and Brian McLaren, There Was - and Still Is - Frederick Buechner 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Frederick Buechner was - and remains - a pioneer in spiritual memoir.

A promising literary light whose works have attracted the attention of even New York's inner circle, Buechner dared to move further and further along his spiritual journey. He admits that his ordination as a Presbyterian minister was a terrible career move for a serious writer. He did it anyway. And, he's not easily categorized as a "Christian writer," either. His memoirs with titles like "Telling Secrets" through "The Longing for Home" are almost impossible to classify with our oh-so-easy labels of "evangelical" or "emergent," "progressive" or "conservative." He wrote them, anyway, and they found a loyal audience of thousands. Over time, his books have formed one the great spiritual reflections on life in turn-of-the-millennium America.

A clear theme emerges in these more than 30 volumes of memoir, fiction and nonfiction - a clear character to the relationship Buechner has been building with us. His overarching theology of writing goes something like this: Fundamentally, he argues in one book after another, we tell our stories because we have a deep yearning to participate in a far greater story. Whatever terrible secrets we think we are concealing, we soon discover that they weave themselves into a far, far larger narrative. And, in telling those stories, ultimately, we find ourselves in a community not only with other storytellers, but with the ultimate Storyteller.

That's why you should buy and read "Yellow Leaves." If you flip through it in a bookstore, you might mistake this slim volume for a late-in-life after thought. You would be mistaken. Within these 133 pages are some of the "yellow leaves" left toward the end of the season - vividly hanging from the limbs in Buechner's garden. In his mid-80s now, his reflections aren't the brawling spiritual wrestling match of "Godric" or the grand literary feat of "Bebb" or even the moving dramas of "Telling Secrets" or "Longing for Home."

These are last leaves. And what leaves they are! In this volume, Buechner gives us the spiritual gem of his catalytic evening with Maya Angelou; then he waves a wand and takes us with him back into Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol;" then another wave and we're attending a 1943 family picnic where he nervously gets to his feet as a boy and dares to read a poem and speak "simple truth." And, of course, the greatest spiritual gem in the book - the one-page Introduction of a memoirist now in his mid-80s, invoking Shakespeare's own "yellow leaves."

After all these years, Buechner fans, you can't miss this one. And newcomers? Here's a sparkling, multi-faceted showcase of this master's eye, ear - and heart.

Best Book by Lucado 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've read most of Max Lucado's books and this is not only my favorite by him but my favorite book of all time. (Well, except for the Bible.)

This book is helpful in some way for anyone who reads it. I have given this book as a gift for so many people going through a tough time and it has helped each one.

No one tells a story in quite the way Lucado does. It is hard to put his books down and this is one book that I read continually until I finished it. It is a book you keep and read again and again.

God has blessed Max Lucado with a gift of story telling and finding scripture that might be obscure or a special verse that God shows him and then opens his heart to a whole new and unique way of looking at and explaining its meaning in a way that is easy to understand. He brings about such deep emotions with his writing.

God has given Max Lucado a special gift and in turn God, through Lucado, will bless each person who read his books. This book is a must read for everyone. On a scale of 1-5 I really give this book a 10.

The Message of We Are Not Separate... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is my bible. I take it everywhere, and I buy it as gifts for my friends, searching for healing, whether through tough relationships, illness, bad fortune, etc. This "non-religious" based prayer book can be understood by all. There is no religious distinction, but there is a warmth and comfort that comes over one when reading through the prayers which conjure such "feeling". I took excerpts of Marianne's prayers and used it for our Thanksgiving blessing...family loved it...so down to earth. If we could get away from our "separate" beliefs, so much peace and harmony could be the healing that is needed for humanity. I commend Marianne for her strengths in keeping the awareness of the light in all of humanity at the forefront.

Excellent. 5 out of 5 stars.
