A Bible reference for intelligent people 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Dubbed by Times magazine as one of America's seven best preache's, Harvard professor of Christian Morals and pastor of the school's University's Memorial Church, Rev. Gomes' latest work, The Good Book, is a bestseller selection of the Book of the Month and Quality Paperback Book Clubs. This well-written, compassionate and thoughtful book is written for the general public to entice them back to reading the Bible through new eyes, paying more attention to its moral principles than the social practices.

Rev. Gomes asserts that Biblical literacy in this country is extremely rare. Among a thousand people polled in the US by the Barna Research Group 10 percent said that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife, 16 percent were convinced that the New Testament contained the Gospel of Thomas, and 38 percent believed the Old and New Testaments were written a few years after Jesus' death. Gomes observed humorously that, "These replies are worthy of the old Sunday school howler in which the epistles are defined as the wives of the apostles." (p. 5)

The Good Book is divided into three sections: "Opening the Bible" wherein Gomes warns against three dangerous and common temptations on Biblical interpretation: (1) bibliolatry, "the worship of the Bible, making it an object of veneration and ascribing to it the glory belonging to God," (2) literalism, "the worship of the text, in which the letter is given inappropriate superiority over the spirit, and (3) culturalism, "the worship of the culture in which the Bible is forced to conform to the norms of the prevailing culture." Section two, "The Use and Abuse of the Bible" is a historical account of how the Bible has been used to oppress certain groups: Jews, women, homosexuals, and minorities. Section three, "The True and Lively Word" explores what the Bible has to say about the good life, evil, suffering, temptation, wealth, science, mystery and joy."

In an interview about the book with the Harvard University Gazette, Gomes commented "I would say, one, the Bible is accessible. Two, it takes work. The Bible is not a Reader's Digest sort of enterprise, and you can't simply open it up, as 90 percent of religious people do, and just hope that inspiration oozes out of the page or that you can just figure it out because you're a reasonably intelligent person. But, three, the work pays off because the Bible has to do with issues, both great and small, that are as relevant as tomorrow's headlines."

The Good Book is filled with scholarship and imagination, with wit and wisdom sufficient to serve as a road map back to and through the Bible. I join with the former Archbishop of Canterbury, The Right Reverend Lord Runcie, who hailed The Book as "easily the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people."

Editorial Review:

A guide to reading the Bible authored by the minister of Memorial Church at Harvard interprets what the Bible says about such topics as joy, goodness, and suffering, as well as women, gays and lesbians, and people of color.

Editorial Review:

The strength of this remarkable book lies in its definition of what it is to be human and religious. The most important experience, Underhill claims, is to be 'in love with the Absolute', because it is this mystical experience that releases our greatest potential as human beings. Above all, it is a book that shows how the world of the mystic is within everyone's reach, and shares an inspiring vision of what this world offers those who choose to enter it. Mysticism, first published in 1911, was at once hailed as a classic and swiftly established its author as the foremost authority on the subject in the English-speaking world. Here she offers an excellent introduction to mysticism, discussing the works of such great mystics as Meister Eckhart, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, Rumi and 'Attar. Mysticism draws on hundreds of sources from all over the world and remains the pre-eminent study of human spiritual consciousness. Part One defines mysticism from different perspectives, sets out its characteristics and explains its relationship to psychology, theology and symbolism. Part Two explores the 'mystic way', the stages of mystic consciousness from the self to union with the Absolute. Also included are a useful summary of European mysticism, and an impressive bibliography.

Fantastic Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is amazing. I just finished it and it's very comforting and centering. I have it dog-eared, highlighted and carry it with me in my tote bag always. Can't wait to read Paul's other books.....you'll like this book.

Life Changing 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Love Without Conditions is by far the most important book I have read this life time. It is a totally life changing experience and assists
anyone who reads it in grasping the joy of a God of Unconditional Love.
I have recommended this book to literarlly hundreds of people who have
all had the same experience. I read it over and over again.

The Word behind the words... but mostly silence shines. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have this book with me often when I go out, even if I don't open it, and I have this book often by my bed. The glance of the man on the book (forget the name Jesus) is the pervading silence throughout the book that bubbles up everywhere like a frangrant garden.

Some of the staple books I have as my "companion" are Gandhi's The Way to God, and also Gandhi's Essnential Writings edited by John Dear, the Dalai Lama's "How to Practice- the Way to a Meaningful Life", Adyashanti's the Impact of Awakening, Khalil Gibran's Beloved and Devotional Songs of Mirabai. Anything by Rumi or Hafiz, bring them on.

You haven't met Jesus. You are always meeting him. There wasn't a time when you and Him were apart. I'm not Christian, as you can tell from the kinds of books that daily nourish my soul. He is you, closer to anything you can ever name. I have had "traumas", "disasters" in the ways of love and relationships, and many tears were shed over these pages that were "casually opened" for emergency consultations, let's say. It's like Medicine Cards, Bach Rescue Remedy, only more profound.

For one sentence out of the page you open up may be the cup of medicine drink so bitter and yet so sweet and vibrant in its afterglow. And it seems as though it was meant only for you at that particular time. That perhaps there is nothing except you and Jesus everywhere and always. If I find myself avoiding this book in the car or in my house...that probably means I'm onto something "weird", "no good","out of habit", who knows!!

I recommend this book as a gift to anyone who perhaps wants to see Jesus in a totally different light.. in places it sounds more perenial stuff, vedantic at times. Some would think it's just sane, no-nonsense psychology, which the American Buddhist psychologists are gleaming from Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, etc. The historical Jesus takes a backseat, redemption and sin go out the door. There is no story. Jesus goes, "Forget 'bout it!" in New York Little Italy accent. Well not really.

So take a flight.

Editorial Review:

The incredible book from Jesus calling us to awaken to our own Christhood. Rarely has any book conveyed the teachings of the master in such a simple but profound manner. This book will help you to bring your understanding from the head to the heart so that you can model the teachings of love and forgiveness in your daily life.

An Openly Biased View Of Catholicism 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 8 people found this review helpful.

David Currie provides a concise explanation of the Catholic Church's position on numerous subjects that are not generally addressed or understood by Protestants, including the belief that the bread and wine actually become in substance (although not appearance) the body and blood of Jesus during communion, the requirements of both faith and works for admission to heaven, the role of purgatory, the importance of Mary, and various moral issues. Currie completely agrees with all the Church's moral issue positions including its opposition to artificial birth control, the use of which "makes the marriage act a lie." In his Epilogue, he reports with great pride that his wife is expecting their seventh child in God's answer to the prayers of their three-year-old daughter.
Currie also reviews the Catholic Church's position that its authority is derived from Jesus to Peter to the succession of popes and that this chain of authority gives the Church the power to set dogma which is to be accepted without question by good Catholics. According to Currie, if a good Catholic disagrees with the Church, he or she should try harder to understand why the Church is right.
Currie's personal background as a fundamentalist who converted to Catholicism is always on display and his numerous anecdotes are all openly biased in favor of Catholicism. He begins the book with a statement that fundamentalists believe all Catholics go to Hell. His one priest/sex abuse story just happens to end in the alleged victim recanting his allegation. And he mentions that certain Protestant churches do not accept Catholic baptism whereas Catholic churches accept Protestant baptism, but chooses not to mention that most Protestant churches offer communion to Catholics but Catholic churches do not offer communion to non-Catholics.

Editorial Review:

David Currie was raised in a devout Christian family whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism - theology professors, seminary presidents and founders of evangelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity program. This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became a Roman Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic and intelligible account of the reasons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholic and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary.

The Psalms of David

James S. Freemantle
Foreword by Stephen Freemantle

Back in print, The Psalms of David is a unique, beautifully illustrated edition of the revered religious work, also known as the Book of Psalms.

The lifework of a little known genius, this facsimile edition of a magnificent hand-painted illumination of the Psalms of David is a stunning tribute to love and spiritual devotion.

Born in India, James Freemantle traveled through the Middle East during his years in the British Army. Shortly after his second marriage, he began this hand-lettered, illustrated volume for his beloved bride, Clara. For the next thirty years, he periodically worked to transfer the psalms into a book that would physically match the lyrical beauty of the poetry.

Throughout the book one finds the brilliantly colored blooms of India: the jacaranda, the flame-of-the-forest, huge yellow laburnums, brilliant poinsettias, and highly scented mimosa. The pages are alive with kingfishers and larks, drummers and hoppie butterflies, storks and pheasants. There are pictures of the lake near Freemantle's home, the nearby Brahmin temple, and the view from the train as he went up to school in the hills. Scenes from his travels in the army, Middle Eastern harbors and villages, and copies of illustrations from Victorian travel books reveal his draftsman's training in the accuracy of every detail.

A labor of love, a work of art, a volume to treasure, this illuminated edition of the King James version of the Psalms of David is the perfect gift for all seasons.

Editorial Review:

Through these meditations on David’s words in Psalm 51, readers discover there is mercy for every wrong and grace for every new beginning.

What do you do when you’ve really blown it? Is sin really as dangerous and is grace really as powerful as the Bible says they are? Is there such a thing as a new beginning?

Sin and grace—these are the two themes of our lives. We all blow it and we all need to start over again. In Psalm 51, David tells his story of moral failure, personal awareness, grief, confession, repentance, commitment, and hope. And because David’s story is every believer’s story, Psalm 51 is every believer’s psalm. It tells how we, as broken sinners, can be brutally honest with God and yet stand before him without fear.

Whiter Than Snow unpacks this powerful little psalm in fifty-two meditations, reminding readers that by God’s grace there is mercy for every wrong and grace for every new beginning. Designed for busy believers, these brief and engaging meditations are made practical by the reflection questions that conclude each chapter.

Whiter Than Snow is music for the sinner’s soul. In fifty-two personal, creative, and sometimes poetic devotionals, Paul Tripp responds to Psalm 51 the way a jazz musician improvises on a familiar tune. In making this sweet music, Dr. Tripp makes King David’s confession our own, helping us get honest about our sin and opening our hearts to the mercy of Jesus.”
Philip Graham Ryken, Senior Minister, Tenth Presbyterian Church

“Convicting and encouraging, cutting and healing. Paul Tripp delves into the misery of sin and the goodness of grace with insight and inspiration. This book wonderfully blessed me, and I pray for its widest possible reading.”
Daniel L. Akin, President and Professor of Preaching and Theology, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Anthony DeMello actually was able to bring eastern mysticism and methods of meditation, into the Vatican and teach it to the jesuits! If you know anything about catholic hirarchy, that is quiet a feet. But once you read this, one of my favorots, or other books by Fr. DeMello you'll see that what he says and teaches is so pure, innocent, true, relevant, and REAL, that you see why he recieved such a wide audiance. I loved working the exercises in his book. Not from a Catholic point of view, but from a Meditatiors position. I read his books often when I need to refocus. Enjoy :-)

Find Peace in Troubled Times 5 out of 5 stars.

Anthony DeMello is superb in his manor of helping the reader find the lost, confused and at times sad individual and transporting him or her to a place of peace and tranquility. Wellsprings offers many short medition exercises. I really enjoy the contempletive peacefulness that is awakened with each essay that is SLOWLY read and concentrated upon. I take with me everywhere I go. Even though I have only owned it for a short time, it has the appearence of being decades old. I really have made it looked LOVED. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and still do

Editorial Review:

Internationally acclaimed spiritual guide Anthony de Mello points the way toward peace of mind and inner power through simple teachings that integrate the ancient traditions of the East with the psychological and philosophical perspectives of the West.
