Your were There: at the Manger ... 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed using this little book during this past Advent and Christmas. Walter Wangerin Jr. has used his wonderful gift writing to give us a series of daily meditations that are a great help in focusing the mind, heart and imagination of the reader on the deepest significance of Christmas. We follow the events of the first Christmas from with scripture accompanied by short writings, poetry and prayer. Wangerin's writing varies between dramatization, exposition and application of the Christmas story to our lives. If you relax and let the author and the Holy Spirit have their way, the book will help you break through the confusion and frenzied cultural activity that often accompany Advent and touch the deeper meaning of the season. It doesn't drop you after Christmas Day but carries you through the 12 days of Christmas, gently releasing you at the beginning of Epiphany. It will leave you feeling like you've been there: at the Manger and help you go and live out the significance of Christ's coming to us in your own life.

I highly recommend this book, I thought it was even more effective than Wangerin's similar--and also very good--book for Lent and Easter, "Reliving the Passion".

Editorial Review:

In this Advent and Christmas devotional, best-selling author Walter Wangerin Jr. takes the reader day-by-day through the major events and characters leading up to the birth of Jesus. (36 meditations.)

A helpful resource into the writings of the "Apostle to the Gentiles." Useful as an introduction.

Excellent meditations on the life and works of St Paul 4 out of 5 stars.

The collection of talks were written for monthly gatherings of young adults when Cardinal Martini was in Milan. It is an excellent starting point for further reflection and meditation on the figure of Saint Paul and his written legacy to the Church. You can tell that Cardinal Martini is not simply presenting a "paper" on Saint Paul, but is guiding the listener into prayer with him. I plan on using this resource as an introduction to Bible study on St Paul for young adults.

A small book every Catholic should read 5 out of 5 stars.

This short book by Cardinal Martini gives a great analysis that brings to life both Saint Paul's conversion and evangelization struggles and through specific verses of Paul's major letters, an explanation of the evangelization problems he faced and how he dealt with them. The selected verses provide good meditative examples, explaining Paul's intent and specific teachings to correct the problems arising in the formation of these new church communities. A great examination of the problems that faced the growth and evolution of the new church with explanations and reflections that are highly relevant today.

Two great books in one volume 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book contains Carson's book on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) from 1978 and his 1987 _When Jesus Confronts the World_ on Matthew 8-10. Both books are excellent, and it's nice to have them in one volume.

The original Sermon on the Mount book discussed some historical, critical, and theological questions within the main text, and Carson has now separated that material into appendices, making the main body of the text more like that of the second book. Both books originated out of sermons, and therefore they are quite accessible, yet the fact that they're from one of the foremost evangelical biblical scholars today ensures that they flow out of the best biblical scholarship.

This book is an excellent place to get into this section of Matthew without the full study of a commentary and all the distractions therein. It focuses on the main theological and practical points in the text, making it useful for understanding the point of the text for the Christian life, yet it does it from someone who is a published scholar on the book of Matthew, which gives it far more backing than slimmer studies tend to have.

Editorial Review:

Who is Jesus Christ? How can we really know him? People have been asking that important question for 2,000 years. The best answers are found in the four Gospels, but how are they to be understood, and applied to our modern lives and faith?

Cardinal Schönborn, a renowned spiritual writer and teacher, presents this third book in his series of meditations on the Gospels, in which he seeks to help readers have a deep personal encounter with Jesus Christ as seen in the Sacred Scriptures. His first two books focused on the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, and this book covers Luke. Sunday after Sunday, he uses the Church's Year C, mainly readings from Luke to explain the beauty of the Gospel in clear and understandable words.

The Cardinal shows how many of the most famous and important events in Christ's life, and some of his greatest parables, are only related in the Gospel of Luke. The powerful parables of the Prodigal Son, of the Good Samaritan, and of the Lost Sheep are told only in Luke's Gospel. Also told only in Luke is the famous story of the tax collector, Zaccheus, so short he climbed a tree to be able to see Jesus, as well as the moving story of the disciples' encounter with Christ on the road to Emmaus after the Resurrection. It is in Luke's Gospel that important roles of women are given particular mention. Finally, it is thanks to Luke especially that we know some of the important details about the Passion of the Savior.

"This book is not merely an aid to the Gospel of Luke, it is an inspiration. It reveals the practical eye of a pastor and the penetrating insights of a great scholar."
-- James V. Schall, S.J. Author, The Order of Things

"Cardinal Schönborn convincingly brings home the truth and power of the Gospel image of Jesus. If you have lost touch with Christ, you will find him again. Those who want to be disciples of Christ will discover new strength, conviction, and joy in this fresh expression of the reality of your Jesus and mine."
-- Fr. Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., Author, Arise from Darkness

A Helpful Guide for Christian Growth 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This updated classic of Andrew Murray gives the reader a 31 day devotional study of John 15:1-16. Through it the reader learns the keys of abiding in Christ. This tiny volume was packed with material that challenged me to live out these verses in my daily life.

Editorial Review:

Are you spiritually withered? Do you find yourself lacking the fruit promised to believers by the Apostle Paul? Well, how's your connection to the Vine? In his discussions with his disciples, Christ used the picture of a plant to illustrate the relationship between Himself, the life-giver, and his followers, the life-receivers. Andrew Murray examines this metaphor, taking the reader beyond a mere surface application of this truth to realize the absolute necessity of 'abiding in the vine.' 'Apart from me, you can do nothing.' We can't try to be spiritual. We can't even try to be good. All of our strengths and all of our blessings come as gifts from our heavenly Father. Examine the fifteenth chapter of John with this skilled Bible scholar.

Editorial Review:

Fifty brief meditations bring these first-century letters into the twenty-first century, demonstrating their enormous relevance and practicality for the church today.

The seven letters of Revelation 2 and 3 are utterly and unequivocally Christ-centered in their content. The message is clear: Jesus is to be the center of all church life. When it comes to his church, Jesus cares comparatively little about numbers, cultural relevance, social influence, or financial prosperity. The only thing that ultimately matters is the degree to which a church and the lives of its members are shaped according to the likeness of Jesus.

These daily meditations lead readers to ask several questions: Is my church centered on Jesus? Am I? Is Jesus prized above all earthly treasures? To the One Who Conquers will help believers fashion their lives and ministries according to what pleases him, inspiring a lifetime of faithfulness.
