I received this book a year ago as a gift from my sister. It took me a year to complete as I read a section nightly. Now I ordered 5 more copies that I want to give to family and friends. I love this book! I often found that when I picked it up each night, it would offer words of comfort or advice for the very problem/situation that I was dealing with. I truly did feel God's presence when reading this book. I hope that you will too.

I purchased this book for my mother who is in the final stages of colon cancer. Everything I have wanted to share with her I found in this book. It was the only copy in my local store and I felt as if God placed the book before my eyes as a direct answer to my prayers. I love the book so much, I have ordered my own copy. I believe that this will be a book I treasure, especially more so after my mother is gone.

I love Psalms! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love the book of Psalms and this is a great little devotional book. There is so much comfort and guidance in the Bible and I like the fact that this breaks Psalms down into bit size pieces to chew on all day long. I do wish the book was spiral bound though to make it stay open easier for my devotional study.... but then again I wish ALL books were spirial bound.

Editorial Review:

This devotional contains all 150 Psalms and 20 other songs in Scripture, divided into daily readings. The readings include helpful background information on the psalm, a related hymn stanza, and an application thought. Biweekly "Interludes" further aid understanding by explaining things such as acrostic psalms or Hebrew poetic style. Indexes included.

Glorious Versions of twelve Psalms for daily Devotional 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"The Psalms are the Oldest Prayers in the Judeo-Christian tradition. They trace the human condition back for thousands of years." So writes Sister Joan Chittister in her brief Intro to The Psalms. For each month she chooses one of the key psalms of Praise, Love, Joy, Hope or Compassion with themes befitting that Psalm.

For Feb 28 after writing about her ordinary desk, ordinary car, and ordinary food, she quotes Dag Hammarskjold: Our ordinary Life is in..."the Holiness of human life, before which we bow down in worship."

April's Psalm 71 is one of Prof. Walter Bueggemann's favorites, For a Psalm of Despair and Hope! She uses as her marvelous conclusion from Emily Dickinson: "Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul...And sings the tune without words and never stops at all."

June is the Month of my birthday, on June 16...She quotes Erica Jong: "Take your life in your own hands, and what happens? A terrible thing: No one is to blame!" For June 21, "Loneliness is the poverty of Self; Solitude is the richness of Self!"

Sister Joan is the epitome of one who gracefully places the right words into her chosen psalms which touch our deeper needs and hungers of spiritual desire for Compassion, Hope, and Love!

This is her one most profoundly simple and beautiful creations. Sincerely in gratitude... "Revi" Fred W Hood

Editorial Review:

The psalms are the oldest prayers in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Joan Chittister sees them as a lexicon of the human condition, assuring us of God's caring presence and loving help in every situation. In this beautifully designed book, Chittister provides a favorite psalm for each month and a reflection on the prayer for each day so that the psalm can become a benedition that pulsates in our hearts.

How the Torah text reflects the text of our own lives 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

For about two decades, Rabbi Gold has been gifting the world with memorable sacred songs and chants. This is her first book, and it's been worth waiting for. In it, she relates to Torah with the same artistic sensibilities that have infused her music. She has a gift for articulating inner conversations, giving voice to the Work of being true to one's highest self. Perhaps this is why the prose is relatively vivid for a book dealing with Torah, and why it excels in its genre.

This book looks unblinkingly at Torah through the eyes of an earnest and experienced traveler on spiritual paths. She does not set herself up as a guru telling us what to think; rather, she models for us a process of textual encounter and introspection that we can make our own. With the highest respect for Torah and with a straightforward style that is never preachy, she shows us how to employ the biblical text as a mirror that we can turn on our inner selves, to help us see more clearly what we sometimes hide from our own view.

Many urbane, contemporary Jews find certain parts of the Torah boring, unredeemably sexist, or otherwise primitive; it is most instructive to see what Rabbi Gold makes of those aspects: she challenges herself to embrace all of Torah, to read it in such a way that makes the text sacred to her. One anecdote that she relates (p. 18) sums up well the noble goal of this book. One afternoon, she was describing to a friend what the ongoing discipline of writing this book was like: "You can't sit back and criticize . . . what you don't like in the Torah. Instead, you must search for those same difficulties in yourself and then engage in a process of healing and purification. Instead of blaming, you have to take responsibility." And as she was expounding thus, she heard "a voice speaking every so gently yet firmly" in her ear: "And you could live your whole life that way."

The book is at the same time a highly personal interpretation of Torah and a spiritual manual. It contains one chapter for each of the fifty-four "parashot" (the Hebrew term for the traditional segments of the Torah nominally studied and read by Jews according to an annual cycle). Each chapter distills from that biblical passage both a blessing and a spiritual challenge for one's life; it also offers concrete guidance for spiritual practice(s) that promise to help us appreciate the former while facing the latter. A multi-layered introduction and several practically oriented appendices round out the book.

Although the author often draws upon concepts from other faith traditions, and although she has academic training in Bible, this book's enterprise is thoroughly Jewish and religious in both language and scope. For example, it engages "the Torah" rather than "the Pentateuch." And it pays no regard to questions of the historical origin or development of the biblical text, which it takes as a given.

Editorial Review:

Torah Journeys: The Inner Path to the Promised Land promises to turn the year-long cycle of Torah reading into a journey of personal spiritual growth.

The first book by Rabbi Shefa Gold, the popular teacher of chant and meditation, Torah Journeys is designed to be meaningful for those at any spiritual level.

great book, but beware 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be insightful, though not quite as good as Secrets of the Vine (written by her husband, Bruce). Darlene Wilkinson gives the Prayer of Jabez a slightly different spin, putting her perspective on it. But beware of several items: 1) this is written from her perspective, so don't presume that all she says will apply or even make sense from yours; and 2) asking for God to enlarge your territory doesn't necessarily mean make you rich. I noticed a few other reviewers of Bruce Wilkinson's book thought that it meant make me rich. I took it to mean, make me more effective for Your kingdom, Lord, by taking me out of my comfort zone (my territory). Just as King Solomon prayed for wisdom and God, because He was pleased with his request, made him the richest king of all time, so with Jabez. The very same day I began my 30 day trial (I am still in it, by the way), God granted my wish by opening a position at my church for me to minister through serving. The Lord has truly blessed me through this prayer. It is 100% effective if you keep your eyes open and don't expect physical riches. For me, the riches I am seeking are those to be found in my eternal home. Though I'm not going to turn down any earthly riches if that is God's plan!

Editorial Review:

The phenomenal impact of The Prayer of Jabez is shown by reports of changed lives, expanded ministries, and spiritual breakthroughs among believers everywhere. Now women have their own unique version, shared by Bruce Wilkinson's lifetime partner in marriage, that is full of significance for women's roles and ministry opportunities in God's kingdom. A must-hear for every woman, whether she has read The Prayer of Jabez or not, this audio addresses important questions such as, How can a busy mom expand her territory without neglecting the most important territory she already has, her family? Darlene Marie Wilkinson's warm, personable approach reaches out to her listener, encouraging her to become like Jabez and experience the extraordinary life.

Scripture coming to life! 5 out of 5 stars.

Nicole is able to illustrate these encounters from Scripture in very real, modern day terms. They cut to the core of who we are as people and bring to light God as the focus. Great job, Nicole!

Editorial Review:

Walk with Christ through ancient Jerusalem as he encounters the man with the withered hand, John the Baptist, Judas, and four other New Testament characters in this book of dramatic sketches by Nicole Johnson, the Women of Faith dramatist. Nicole uses her talent for storytelling to help us be there with Christ and see the scenes with new eyes and understanding, bringing to life lessons that apply to our modern lives.

Partial illustrations did not meet expectations 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm not well qualified to critique the word of God so I'll limit my comments to the illustrations. Many of the illustrations are small segments cut out of larger works of art. It is difficult to appreciate the wonderful paintings of Chagall when you only see 5% of a painting. Otherwise this is a beautiful little book.

Editorial Review:

The celebrated artist Marc Chagall began illustrating the Bible in 1931, and it became his lifelong passion. This extraordinary volume includes more than 130 pages of his finest works, paired with three books from the Old Testament. Chagall's illustrations reflect his Jewish heritage and his view of the complex relationship between God and man, presaging many of the subjects and themes in his later work. Originally published in France, the extensively illustrated, chunky, hand-sized book is a delightful combination of the popular artist's evocative style alongside the most familiar stories from the Bible.

Your heart aflame - daily! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

"In this book you will find select readings from John Calvin's Commentary on the Psalms. It provides us with a year's worth of rewarding daily meditations.

John Calvin described the Psalms as "an anatomy of all the parts of the soul. "The description is an apt one, says Sinclair B. Ferguson in the foreward to this volume, "since every experience, every emotion, all the heights and depths, all the joys and sorrows, all the mysteries of human life, are here." Reading this on a daily basis can hardly fail to bring you spiritual health and strength. And you will come to love both the Psalms and Calvin better before the year is ended."

Excerpt: Blessed is the man: The meaning of the Psalmist is that is shall be always well with God's devout servants, whose constant endeavour it is to make progress in the study of his law. He teaches us how impossible it is for anyone to apply his mind to meditation upon God's law, who has not first withdrawn and separated himself from the society of the ungodly.

An excellent Christmas gift. Order now!

Editorial Review:

Readings from Calvin's Commentary on the Psalms capture the depth of his insight, wisdom, and devotion to God and provide a year's worth of daily meditations.

God's Our Real Bud! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Prolific writer and dedicated churchman Ellsworth Kalas brings prayer into the Old Testament Psalms with his 2006 126-page paperback "Longing to Pray". The books guiding principle is "how the Psalms teach us to talk with God". Dr. Kalas documents inside the text without footnotes or endnotes and he present a helpful 15-page study guide (by John Schroeder) for additional book teaching and illumination.

Beginning with the concept that friendship is one of life's most important commodities (page 9) the remainder of his book draws upon various poems and songs from the Psalter to present God as humanity's closest and most permanent friend. In deed, each chapter proffers a different aspect of divine friendship for people (candor, time, beauty, gratitude, repentance, anger, etc.). Kalas presents these often ignored, or misunderstood, friend-tenants as "secrets". His secret, here, is that God is always with us ready to be our universal and longest lasting bud.

Kalas' long career is narrative rich. He shares many of his experiences through this book giving it a comprehensive and helpful feel. His stories, alone, make good reasons for its purchase.

Dr. Kalas entices the reader to prayer with his psalmic suggestions and illustrations. Through Kalas' interpretation the various psalms reviewed come alive with meaning and holy application. Read this book with your Scripture close at hand (you'll want to make notes).

It's unfortunate that Kalas has neither the place nor opportunity with this small prayer book to review each of the 150 Psalms and their dispositions toward prayer. Such would be a brilliant study! As it is, this little book convinces that God the Creator is our closest and longest friend.

This book is recommended to all studying the Psalms, any wishing to invigorate his or her prayer life, those looking for a short term small group study, and all preparing to supplement their personal Scripture study.
