Editorial Review:

A Formatio book. Weariness. Wonder. Joy. Longing. Anger. These are the feelings of the Psalms: honest expressions of pain and joy penned by real people in the midst of real life circumstances. Though they were written centuries ago, the Psalms still resonate deeply with us today, giving voice to our thoughts and longings:"Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD." (Psalm 130:1)"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God." (Psalm 84:2)In Learning to Pray Through the Psalms, James W. Sire teaches us to take our appreciation for this rich book of Scripture a step further. Choosing ten specific psalms, Sire offers background information that helps us read each one with deeper insight and then lays out a meditative, step-by-step approach to using the psalmists' words as a guide for our own personal conversation with God. A group study is also included in each chapter, along with a guide for praying through the psalm in community. The Lord loves when his people pray. And his Word is a powerful tool for framing honest, intimate prayers. Sire's innovative approach will enrich our minds and our souls as we read more perceptively and pray with all of our emotions.

Well Done 5 out of 5 stars.

Pennington performs a valuable service to anyone who seeks to learn Hebrew on their own. The vocabulary includes the most common Hebrew words so that the learner will have the maximum benefit of memorization. Each is clearly pronounced enabling the student to recognize similar sounding words, which is important since much Hebrew Scripture relies on word plays and punning. It is a great resource.

Very Useful 5 out of 5 stars.

Well, I'm a person taht has big struggles getting my vocab down, and finding people to work with me on it the way I need to work - with near endless repetition until the words all finally "stick." The thing that is great about this is that you can not only take it in the car wit hyou, but if you've put it on your computer in MP3 format you can grab a dry-erase board and dry-erase markers and pause after each word, trying to write the words out and thereby learn them much more actively. Also, it is a great tool to put on your iPod and use it while you exercise (of course, quietly in a public place, though personally I prefer long walks). It is helpful, especially if you are in the process of trying (as I am) to survive the required Hebrew courses for seminary. I think it is a very useful product that has all sorts of potential uses.

Editorial Review:

In this set of two audio CDs, Jonathan T. Pennington reads all the Hebrew words that occur twenty times or more in the Old Testament in descending order of frequency, followed by an English definition.

Editorial Review:

The Venerable Bede (A.D. 673-735), a Benedictine monk best known for his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, also compiled one of the church's oldest and most inspiring devotional books, the Abbreviated Psalter. Now this classic work of Christian literature is available in this first accurate English translation.

Crafted for personal prayer and meditation, the Abbreviated Psalter consists of carefully condensed renderings of each of the Psalms. Focused as it is on the praise of God and on the essential spirituality of human existence, Bede's ancient book remains moving and relevant today. All persons of faith will find this little book a constant source of devotional strength.

This new edition of Bede's masterpiece is based on Gerald M. Browne's own critical edition of the Latin text, Collectio Psalterii Bedae Venerabili adscripta. Browne also includes an informative preface introducing Bede and his work. The convenient size of this attractive volume will allow Bede's Abbreviated Psalter to be readily at hand whenever there is need for its message of consolation and hope.

Really His Story 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book could only have been Spirit-inspired. I have never read a more clear understanding of mankind's foundation in God. I felt as though God Himself was speaking and giving clarity to so many issues that arise from whence man came and why......
I trust that any person who has doubts about the love of God and why He continues to reach out to us will read this book.

How does Genesis relate to my life? 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Ms Lotz clearly has been inspired to use the first 11 chapters of Genesis to think deeply about both the history presented there and the implications of it for our relationship with God. She asks the reader to probe his heart with questions like "Have you been disappointed by your parents?" (in the context of the section on Cain & Abel) and "In what ways have you been giving God your second best?" (in the same section). She also speculates about what might have been going on in these historical characters' lives and minds that might explain their actions. If I have any criticism of the book, it's that a reader who is not careful might be led to believe that the speculations are, in fact, the truth of the situation. But that's a minor quibble. I lead a Bible study that is currently focused on Genesis, and I use this book along with a commentary and study notes to prepare for the study, and have found it very helpful. If you're interested in trying to understand some of the puzzling passages in the early chapters of Genesis (I loved her speculation about who the "sons of God" and "daughters of men" are and find it very plausible), or would just like to think more deeply about the first writings that revealed God's relationship to humankind, I would highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Anne Graham Lotz leads you through the first eleven chapters of Genesis, unlocking hidden messages in the familiar stories of Creation, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the ark, the Tower of Babel, and others. She thoughtfully illuminates each moment of Creation with inspiring insights and probing reflections to better reveal God, the Creator of us all. In God's Story you will thrill to the beauty, majesty, and tenderness of God's personal involvement in creating the world, and you will come to recognize the Creator's infinite power at work in your life as well.

Editorial Review:

The Psalms are about passion, and you should feel passionately when you read them. The Psalmist poured out his soul to God concerning the things that deeply moved him. As you read the Psalms, you are taking a peak into his heart. As you do you will cry when he weeps, shout when he rejoices, burn when he gets angry and fall on your face when he worships God.

Praying the Psalms is a wonderful way to meet God every day in your private devotions. You cannot get closer to God than when you pray the Scriptures, since the book of Psalms reflects the heart of God. Therefore, you will get close to His heart when you pray the Psalms. —DR. BILL BRIGHT Praying the Psalms carefully shapes the Psalms into personal prayers enabling you to identify with the Psalmist as he prayed. Dr. Towns delicately presents the Psalms as a living language that will move you from your feet to your knees.

Very good devotional 5 out of 5 stars.

The translation is from Peterson's Message, the devotional narrative is by Daniel Southern. Topically selected scripture is very good. Scriptually thoughtful presentation on the daily topic is interesting. A worthwhile daily devotional.

The Message of Leadership 5 out of 5 stars.

This book, though small in size, has a profound message. There is a reading for each day of the month. The message is timeless. This summer my family was gathered for a couple of weeks. We read the verses and passages each day and in the evening met to discuss them. This book would be great for personal use, as well as group discussion. A great gift idea.

top ten worst book I've ever read.... 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Greetings!
I have never written a review for a book but have been compelled to write.
This may be one of the worst books I have ever read. As Mark Noll says, 'the problem with the evangelical mind is that there is no evangelical mind'. This running commentary is very spiritually immature and embarrassing for someone who has been in leadership for so many years.
I appreciate his willingness to confess his own failures but he does not respond with depth of knowledge of the Word of God or true wisdom for leadership. The crime here is more than the money I am out for the book but the true reflection today of the lack or intentionality of leadership in the church today. I apologize for the sting of this review but do not buy this book and encourage such poor scholarship. Proverbs deserves better.

Editorial Review:

This 31-day devotional concentrates on key leadership passages and themes in Proverbs from The Message.

This is a book that every serious student should read. 4 out of 5 stars.
33 of 33 people found this review helpful.

When Thomas Merton, a Trappist Monk, wrote BREAD IN THE WILDERNESS, he had fallen in love with the Psalms of the Old Testament. As a monk, he had chanted the Psalms every day of the week. The monks still do this today. This book is certaily about the Psalms as it relates to people seeking to understand God and Christ. In only the way Thomas Merton can write, one will discover many practical truths about the Psalms. As Merton writes, "The Psalms are theolgy. That means that they place us in direct contact with God, through the assent of faith in His revelation." Even though this is a brief book, it contains large amount of material for thought and study. There are five divisions in the book, and each division highlights how God speaks through the Psalms. To the poet, there are many Psalms of importance. As Merton writes, "The Psalms are poems, and poems have a meanng, although the poet has no obligation to make his meaning immediately clear to anyone who does not want to make an effort to discover it." One of the most ineresting things about the book is how Merton sees Jesus Christ throughout the Psalms. Maybe Merton says it best whe he writes, "The Psalms are more that language. They contain within themselves the silence of high mountains and the silence of heaven. It is only when we stand at the bottom of the mountain that it is hard for us to distinguish the language of the Psalter from the tongues of the earth..." In this book, Merton makes the Psalms come alive. This is a book worth reading.

Editorial Review:

One of Father Thomas Merton's best books, movingly expounding on one of the most beautiful parts of the Bible, the Psalms, presented here as a facsimile reissue of the 1953 classic illustrated book, designed by Alvin Lustig.

Editorial Review:

The Book of Psalms has occupied a central place in Jewish and Christian worship for millennia. This authoritative volume brings together the Psalms in a quartet of versions that is certain to be an invaluable resource for students of this core book of the Bible. The texts featured in A
Comparative Psalter represent a progression of the text through time. The ancient Masoretic Hebrew and Revised Standard Version Bible are displayed on one page, while the New English Translation of the Septuagint and Greek Septuagint are on the facing page. The same set of verses is displayed for
all four texts, making it easy to compare have rendered The Modern English versions included in this volume are noteworthy for their fidelity to the ancient texts. The first major translation of the Christian Scriptures from the original languages to be undertaken since the King James Version, the
RSV debuted in 1952 to critical acclaim. It dramatically shaped the course of English Bible translation work in the latter half of the Twentieth Century, and remains the Bible of choice for many people. Meanwhile, the New English Translation of the Septuagint is the first work of its kind in a
century and a half. This major project brings to the fore a wealth of textual discoveries that help illuminate the Book of Psalms for Twenty-first Century readers.

Editorial Review:

Joshua Jacobson's masterpiece -- the comprehensive 1000-page guide to cantillation -- is now available in this condensed, 300-page, user-friendly paperback edition. It is an ideal instructional guide for adult and young-adult students of Torah, for b'nai mitzvah students; and for cantors, rabbis, and Jewish educators of all denominations.

Like the original edition, it includes an explanation of the tradition and a description of the practice of chanting, with all its regional variations and grammatical rules. There is detailed instruction, with musical notation, on chanting of Torah, and shorter instructions for chanting the haftarah, the megillot, and readings for the High Holy Days. Over 85 links to the audio CD throughout make it easy for readers to follow examples in sound as well as in print and is invaluable for those who cannot read music. Charts, helpful hints, pronunciation guide, glossary, and indexes to the book and the CD complete the book.

Joshua Jacobson, professor of music and conductor of the acclaimed Boston-based Zamir Chorale, has been Torah chanting since he was 10 years old. That life-long experience, combined with the an unquenchable desire to reconnect the art of cantillation with the most convincing and accurate treatment of the ancient text possible, led him to create this indispensable teaching tool. Using Jacobson's highly acclaimed approach, the ancient words come alive in a new, deeply emotional and most accurate way.

A Padre Pio Psalter 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Padre Pio,(now Saint Padre Pio) has long been a reference point for spiritual guidance, direction, and thought. Numerous books have been written about him recounting his life, his amazing spiritual gifts and powerful prayer intercession (both while he lived and since he passed on into eternity and into God's Kingdom). And his own writings (letters) have also been published, not all are easily accessible however.

Eileen Dunn Bertanzetti has obviously been a student of and a devotee of the saintly life of Padre Pio of Pietrelcina and has authored and assembled colections of his words and thoughts in several volumes of her writing. I had obtained a copy of her book: "Padre Pio's Words Of Hope" in which she arranged a series of 150 meditations each which included a scripture passage or verse, followed by a thought in Padre Pio's own words, and ending in a prayer. When i noticed that there were exactly "150" meditations included, it was obvious by that more than symbolic number that the book brought to mind imagery of the Psalter, the Book Of Psalms. So i was not at all surprised, yet happy, to discover that Eileen has followed that book with this one: "Praying The Psalms With Padre Pio" where she makes a pilgrimage psalm by psalm through all 150 by including a key verse from each, followed by Padre Pio's own words and thoughts centered on the thought of that psalm and verse, and then ending in a prayer -- again 150 meditations of spiritual thought and guidance of Padre pio psalm by psalm . . .

Through the many centuries and centuries, the Psalms have always been integral in the life of prayer: both ecclesial as well as private prayer . . . the psalms spring from and speak to the very core needs and feelings and common (even if individual and personal) experience of every person. At one time or another in our lives we share the same hurts, confusions, joys and gratefulness of the psalmists . . . as did Padre Pio himself . . . and to share the wisdom of the scriptures and of one who lived the scriptures so eloquently (Saint Padre Pio), as we pray our own union with the procession of the saints can be most spiritually enlightening. We find that in truth: "there is nothing new under the sun", what we experience now, others have before us; both long before us as well as more recently before us. And that gives us not only a sense of direction but also of hope . . .and peace.

Eileen Dunn Bertanzetti has provided a great spiritual treasure for us in her books on Padre Pio . . . and this volume is a true gem from that mine.
