Editorial Review:

Showing how the Psalms give profound and candid expression to both our highest aspirations and our deepest pain, the late, highly respected Cistercian Abbot M. Basil Pennington shares his reflections on some of the most beloved passages from the Bible's most widely read book. In this companion volume to The Song of Songs: A Spiritual Commentary, Pennington is once again joined by Jewish artist Phillip Ratner, whose evocative works will lead you into more meaningful contemplation of the inner spirit of the Psalms.

Pennington describes how the monastic tradition of regular reflection on the Psalms--a technique St. Benedict called the "work of God," or Opus Dei--can help you transform your everyday life into a powerful life of prayer. Enriched by Jewish and Christian faith, the drawings and meditations speak to every person wanting both to connect with their most human longings and to forge a vital connection with the Divine.

A Steady Diet of God's Word 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful way to fulfill the need to read a steady diet of God's Word. It allows you to read selected Psalms and Proverbs once every day. It is nicely broken up so that you can turn back and read it over and over without feeling you are missing any part of devotional and yet is not so much that you cannot read and enjoy His Word with only a few minutes a day.

Mine is worn out after years of daily use! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought this in a used bookstore for [$$] in 1997, and have made it part of my daily routine ever since. I started using this after having used the one-year bible and one year new testament for several years each, and wanted something that didn't cut off passages in midstream....I especially wanted more of the Psalms, since the prayers of others are a wonderful way to hear God's voice speaking to your own life.

The bonus was, I found some wonderful passages in Proverbs that seem to be written just for me.

Each day, you read 5 Psalms, and a chapter of Proverbs. This isn't a substitute for studying the rest of scripture, but is a wonderful devotional habit I plan to continue for the rest of my life.

Editorial Review:

"An overwhemling number of us are lonely. Sometimes we are lonely for a specific reason: our spouse has recently died or left us; our children have just gone from home or have been tragically killed; we are fighting a particular battle against illness or suffering the ravages of chemotherapy; we are new in the neighbourhood; our values are different from those of our work colleagues; it is a Friday night and all our other single friends have dates. Sometimes our loneliness is a general, pervasive alienation; we just don't feel as if we belong in our place of work, in our community, in our family, even in our church."

Our struggle with loneliness often results in a lament directed at God. We might say something like, "How long Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?" When we cry out words like these, we find ourselves praying the words of the Psalms.

In My Soul Waits, Marva Dawn guides us through psalms that reveal the burdens of our souls to God, and in turn reveal God's profound, intimate concern for our pain and a promise to abide with us in it.

Readers feeling the sting of loneliness will take comfort in this very personal book. Those who strive to support the lonely among them will take wise counsel from the Scriptures it expounds. All will encounter a renewed hope in the One who lists our tears only to wipe them all away.

" Beside Quiet Waters " an inspirational book on the Psalms 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I read a different Psalm in this book each day. No matter who you are or what walk of life you come from this book will reflect some of your daily views of life or values. I find some of the authors quotes about the psalms to be very comforting in times when I am down. He uses everyday life to reflect on the Psalms and bring them to life. All in all i enjoy reading a different Psalm and passage each day to give me a bright outlook on the new day ahead. Sometimes it just inspires me to press on when every thing seems so bleak and dim. I'll reflect on a funny story the author brings to life and i'll smile. I think that if your in for a great book look no further than " Beside Quiet Waters "

Titanically enjoyable! 5 out of 5 stars.

The relation of the psalms to real life was a satisfying feeling for me to read. Once I started to read, I didn't stop. Pretty soon the 200 pages was over, and I wanted more. Let's hope Dr. Capozzi shares more of his metaphorically rich works. Pure self-serving motivation!

A must read for the Oprah book club! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book brings the Psalms into our everyday lives. The book can be used for daily reflections or as simple readings to meditate on. I found that the vast majority of the reflections pertained to things that happen to me in my everyday life. I felt as if the author was speaking to me personally. This book realates lines in the Psalms to things that happen everyday to us. For example, he writes about family, jobs, friends, illness, politics, and sports. I never knew that the Bible could be applied to such a wide variety of topics. In short, this was one of the most soothing books I have read!

Editorial Review:

A Musician Looks at the Psalms is like "a modern-day psalter, written by one who has grappled with the hard realities of life in the workplace, at home, and in the secret sanctuary of his own heart. Like the psalmists, he does not offer pat answers to complex problems. Rather, he strips away the superficialities he encounters in daily living and probes all one hundred and fifty psalms for the light they shed on his spiritual pilgrimage."

God's Heart Revealed 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Love of God, Hope of Salvation, as well as the cost and reward of obedience are revealed through the prophetic writings of Isaiah. A beautiful portrait of our Savior Jesus Christ!

Editorial Review:

F. B. Meyer unveils the Savior in chapters 40 through 55 of Isaiah's prophecy. Meyer's vivid language extracts the meanings and applications behind these powerful prophetic words. Just as Phillip explained the meaning of Isaiah 53 to the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-35, Meyer reveals Jesus Christ in Isaiah and Christian experience to us in Isaiah’s prophecy. As with Meyer's other writings, Christ In Isaiah, written in his matchless prose, captures the meaning of Isaiah's prophecies unlike any other writer could.

Editorial Review:

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones was well known for his New Testament expositions, but in this book readers are given the rare opportunity to experience his skillful exploration of an Old Testament prophetic text. His expositions of Isaiah 1 provide a summary of Isaiahs entire message and of Gods way of salvation. Lloyd-Jones lays out the root cause of human trouble and need, the false ways people try to escape from or meet it, and Gods only way of real deliverance.

The books rich content, rooted in Scripture, is evangelistic as well as prophetic. Preachers and Bible teachers will use Gods Way, Not Ours to help them prepare messages and lessons. It also makes excellent devotional reading, combining careful biblical exposition with timeless application.
