Not a Bible--it's a rock n' roll comedy book. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

When not working as a concert promoter, indie record producer or label owner, Henry Owings is the editor of Chunklet, a particularly snarky music zine from Georgia that does things like dismantle VH1 "100 Greatest"-type shows with nasty--but hilariously true--comments about each choice. Owings' new book, The Rock Bible: Unholy Scripture for Fans & Bands (Quirk Books), focuses that wit with jokes--and occasionally good advice--in the form of hundreds of commandments for acts, roadies, studio mavens, fans and anyone else who comes into Owings' crosshairs.

Some sample commandments:

* No L.A. tour managers who wear their hair in a ponytail, unless you plan on scalping them.
* If your amp has more than six knobs, you are one of them.
* If you don't laugh at the studio engineer's jokes, he will ruin your album.
* A Stax Records T-shirt can only be worn if you can name five artists that didn't have huge hits.
* If you say "My friend Neil is in that band; I've always wanted to see them," Neil is not actually your friend.
* The worst toilet paper in America is always better than the best toilet paper in Europe. It's best to bring your own, especially to Germany.
* All drummers wearing headset microphones should be required to take a food order.
* The only excuse for using a megaphone on stage is if you're a fire marshal.
* Your amps should never stack up to be taller than anybody in the band. If you can't lift that tube head on your own, you don't deserve it.
* Lo-Fi means "couldn't afford to record in a real studio."
* If you're one of those drummers who sets up at the front of the stage, back the hell up. You are the goalies of rock; play your position.

...and so forth. Interspersed throughout are sidebars like Recommended Phrases To Say To A Not-So-Great Band As They Come Off Stage ("It's nice to hear a drummer who really knows how to put some step into the kick drum"), and there's additional essays by comedian Patton Oswalt and others. A particular highlight is Bryan Teasley's "Genesis," a goofy, but surprisingly thorough Cliff Notes of Rock History, presented as the world's longest run-on sentence.

It's not for everyone--folks who accidentally pick this "bible" up expecting to learn more about CCM may walk away offended if they read the section about Groupies, for instance. For many road dogs or studio rats, however, Owings' jokes and sensibilities will ring true, and thanks to the paperback's extra-tough cover, it'll survive living in your road case or being kicked around the studio indefinitely. In all, The Rock Bible is a fun, simple way to pass the time while waiting for that guitar to finally get tuned.

Editorial Review:

"The Rock Bible" is the word on rock music from an insider's perspective - a sassy, f*ck-you guide to the rules of the rock and roll life, featuring chapters on: Genesis, The Gospel According to the Drummer, The Gospel According to he Guitar Players, The Gospel According to The Singer, and more. The bulk of the book is a collection of rock rules and witty observations collected from the folks who know rock best-musicians, tour managers, tour promoters, the fans of Chunklet, and the magazine's editor, Henry Owings.

Book Great--Poor Shipment 5 out of 5 stars.

The Book is AWESOME!!! Recommend for any youth....

HOWEVER Warning when ordering a large number of them at once....
I ordered this item on 2 December, it qualified for the free shipment.. it was shipped on 11 Dec.. with projected delivery of 17 Dec... HOWEVER... because it went through DHL on it's way to USPS (aka mail man) to be delivered to me; it arrived Dec 22 from the USPS... NONE of my previous orders have taken that long, including those which qualified for free delivery. Because there were 20 book (actually only 19 arrived) ordered the box did weight a few extra pounds...

to me that is no excuss for the delay, I gave it plenty of time... and why was the package delivered by USPS instead of DHL?? the address was correct... Stick with ONE carrier once it leaves the shipper...

be careful when you have a large amount of books...

Roadmap for spirituality 5 out of 5 stars.

The perfect book for those of us who ask ourselves "Where can find guidance when I feel........?" This book fills in the blank and much more... Strongly recommended for those Christians who have not mastered the bible yet, but seek daily guidance.

Great to have on hand! 5 out of 5 stars.

I think all the God's Promise type books originated from this one. It's still the best, most concise, least expensive of them all, and my personal favorite. It's cheap, which makes it easy to keep a copy at work, in your purse, at home etc. It's perfect for those days when feel like screaming, take your book to a private place, find the appropriate verses and you'll be empowered to continue on within minutes.

Finding What Matters 4 out of 5 stars.
31 of 31 people found this review helpful.

In WHAT MATTERS MOST, Renita Weems takes an in-depth look at the Song of Solomon from the Old Testament of the Bible. Early on, she notes that this particular book is unique in several ways; it is essentially made up of love poems that might be considered by some to be bordering on erotic and God is never explicitly mentioned. Another important way in which the Song of Solomon is unique is the fact that it is the only book of the Bible that is predominantly told from a woman's point of view. Like many other women in the Bible, we don't learn a lot of biographical information about the Shulammite who narrates most of the Song of Solomon. Weems argues however, that the poetry itself provides us with enough information to know that this unnamed Shulammite woman is one of the earliest examples of a strong, black, Christian woman.

Aside from providing the history, background, and controversy surrounding the various interpretations of the Song of Solomon, the author uses the personality characteristics she derived about the Shulammite woman to create a blue print for women of color. This blueprint will help women learn to love themselves more fully and to truly take to heart the things that should matter most in life. She argues that as women, so often we get so caught up in helping other people and being what they need us to be that we neglect our individual need to grow and thrive. She goes on to note that in order to be open to the love that God has for us we must be willing to break the mold, shatter stereotypes, and embrace all aspects of ourselves. She covers such subjects as identity, balance, sexuality, body image and overcoming adversity, using the Song of Solomon and her own experiences to illustrate her key points. At the end of each chapter she poses questions for self-reflection which she encourages readers to write about on their own.

This is the kind of book that will make you think. I found myself thinking "Wow! I do that all the time!" While I may not agree with all of her reasoning, I enjoyed the fact that it challenged me both mentally and spiritually. This book would be an excellent book to discuss as a group and is sure to incite some heated debates. (...)

Editorial Review:

Essence #1 bestselling author Renita J.Weems draws inspiration from the Song of Solomon in the Bible to examine the role passion plays in women's lives. Many readers are familiar with the Song of Solomon as a series of love poems. In WHATMATTERSMOST, Weems proves it can be interpreted as something much more. Using the work of Scripture as inspiration, she offers 10 lessons that teach women how to discover what their passions are, and how to create direction and meaning in their lives. Byclosely examining this topic, the author helps readers to understand that passion is not something awakened by other people, but an inner source of energy that flows out of every aspect of one's being. In doing so, Weems empowers women to fight against stereotypes and ignore the conventional way of doing things in order to find their own happiness and joy.

Beautfully bound! Perfect size for my purse. This is a wonderful collection of Bible promises for every need - comfort, anger, fear, pride, pain, loss, and all the other difficult encounters on earth, until we join Him in Heaven.

Lovely book. 5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered one of these books for each one of adult kids, neither of which is what would be called 'religious', but both of which appreciate this book. It quotes verses from the King James Version translation. There's quite a bit from the book of Proverbs. Everyone has things they have to deal with and work through in this live; and this is a nice, uplifting little book that could help.
I'm in agreement with some of the other reviewers that it would be good to drag out your Bible and read the verses in context. Merely picking out a verse or two from the Bible and basing your entire belief system on those really isn't going to cut it.

Editorial Review:

Whatever your problems, whatever your needs, the answers are in the Bible. Whatever you're feeling, whatever you're suffering, whatever you're hoping.....the Bible has something to say to you. This is the premise of the Bible Promise Book.

Not much Bible here 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The author's unique clues and style makes the puzzles a comfortable challenge. The answers cannot easily be found in the Million Word Crossword Dictionary. However, I am deeply disappointed at the lack of Bible-related clues. The only thing Bible about the puzzles is a brief quotation in each puzzle. If you're looking for crosswords to exercise your Bible knowledge, this book will do little.

Editorial Review:

Crossword enthusiasts can test and expand their knowledge of scripture, and those well versed in the Bible can sharpen their puzzle skills. Each of the 66 puzzles features a biblical quotation — all taken from the King James version — that ultimately appears in a special series of boxes upon completion of the puzzle.

A waste of money, time, and shelf space! 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Quotes are great tools to corroborate your arguments and to stress your points. However, what's the worth of a quote that has no source? As far as it goes, you can make yourself as many as you want without having to buy this book!

When I started looking for a quotes book I wanted a book that amasses quotable quotes from famous authors, legendary leaders, respectable scholars, and historical figures! Such quotes would be of great value when you're writing essay reports, professional CV's, speeches, and personal statements. Thus when I found this book I thought that my search has concluded! Once I received the book though, disappointment grew heavy inside me.

The author of this book categorized the quotes under more than 100 topics. At the beginning of the book you find an index of all the topics in the book, which seemed to be a good start. But once you start reading the book you realize that more than 70% of the quotes are mentioned without a source! And to be more disappointing, most of the sources of the remaining 30% are either unrecognizable or irrelevant to topic of the quote!

To site an example, I needed quotes about leadership. However, almost all of the quotes were mentioned without sources, an act that labels them "Worthless!" And the few quotes that had sources were quotes from figures who never assumed positions of leadership!

It is also worth mentioning that the quotes without sources are not that interesting either. I can collect many quotes from newspapers and magazines that challenge the quality of the quotes in this book.

In the end, I totally regret buying this book for the purpose mentioned above. Also, I can't think of any other useful purpose that this book can serve. If you still intend to buy this book, then it might be wise to keep on searching because I'm sure there must be something better out there. Good luck.

Editorial Review:

Many great things have been said since the beginning of time. Many are wise, many are funny, and some are both. Wise Words and Quotes presents classic sayings that encourage, inspire, and entertain.

Buy this book!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a theology students dream. It must have taken one many years of serious study and labor to compile scripture references in this way. Passages from the holy books of every major and most minor religions are represented here and grouped side by side by topic for quick comparison. On almost every subject the harmony of thought is staggering! It makes one wonder why religious leaders ever quarrel with one another. It's a great book for study and even better to browse. I started reading it in my doctor's waiting room and got hooked. I found myself actualy looking forward to going to the doctor! If you'd like to sample divine wisdom from many cultures and ages. Buy this book and you'll refer to and enjoy it for a lifetime!

Editorial Review:

Demonstrating the commonality of the world's religions and our common humanity, this rich and varied anthology of scripture offers a highly useful collection of religious quotations, passages, and excerpts from the holy texts, representing a new, holistic approach to the world's religions.

Excellent for all ages 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I discovered this book from my Sunday School teacher several years ago, and I have loved it ever since! I literally cannot keep myself a copy because I enjoy giving it away to everyone. It is an excellent tool for finding appropriate verses about nearly every topic from abortion to dancing. I couldn't imagine planning for a lesson without this book! I truly feel that everyone would be more than pleased with this selection. God bless!

Must have book for teens, youth leaders and parents. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is set up in categories that teens deal with and then for each category it lists verses that correspond with that category. Unlike a lot of scripture by subject book that list adult topics, this one has topics like peer pressure, drug use, abortion, alcohol, appearance, astrology, beauty, cults, dating, depression, fear, gossip, homosexuality, love, lust, porn and many others...topics that teens really do seek answers to. The really great thing about this book is that Ive found that there have been times when my concordance didnt produce results about a particular subject but this little book did. Another great thing about this book is that it makes a great reference for those times when we actually have to have a sit down face to face talk with a youth about somehting thats big in their life and this gives us fast facts without scaring our youth with a big fat bible. Ive found that youth will pick up this little reference book and find what they need but the task of finding quick answers int he bible is often to tough so they give up. Sometimes all they need is one scripture to cling to but if it means reading chapter after chapter to find it, they wont bother. Naturally, it has a lot of other great topics too, but I just listed a few of the obvious ones---but seriously, it is a must have.

Editorial Review:

This book of Bible promises for teens is the ultimate graduation book. It gives God's perspective on a variety of issues and concerns that will arm your teenager with the truth.
