Editorial Review:

One of the most influential books in the history of literature, recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, the Qur'an is the supreme authority and living source of all Islamic teaching, the sacred text that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of Islam. Yet despite the growing interest in Islamic teachings and culture, there has never been a truly satisfactory English translation of the Qur'an, until now.
This superb new translation of the Qur'an is written in contemporary language that remains faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original, making the text crystal clear while retaining all of this great work's eloquence. The translation is accurate and completely free from the archaisms, incoherence, and alien structures that mar existing translations. Thus, for the first time, English-speaking readers will have a text of the Qur'an which is easy to use and comprehensible. Furthermore, Haleem includes notes that explain geographical, historical, and personal allusions as well as an index in which Qur'anic material is arranged into topics for easy reference. His introduction traces the history of the Qur'an, examines its structure and stylistic features, and considers issues related to militancy, intolerance, and the subjection of women.
Clearly written and filled with helpful information and guidance, this brilliant translation of the Qur'an is the best available introduction to the faith of Moslems around the world.

This is not an authentic translation of the Quran 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this translation of the Quran in Barnes and Nobles and I was extremely dissapointed. I have no problem with the translator being Ahmadi, as long as he is faithful to the original text. So please don't take this negative review of the translation to stem from animousity towards the Ahmadis. I have several problems with this translation. First of all, it divides the suras (chapters)of the Quran into sections, each section having a title given to it by the translator. A person who has never read the Quran in Arabic may conclude that these sections are divisions that are in the original Arabic text. They are not. The sections created by the author are problematic because the author, through each title, injects his own interpretation into the actual text of what the main lesson of this section is. Some of these titles lead readers to conclude that the Quran is intolerant of Jews, Christians and other monotheistic religions. This is not true. Instead, the author injects his own intolerance in the Quran. Another example of this is the "explanations" the author provides before each sura. The author's extreme intolerance distorts the meaning of the actual text. For example, in his introduction to the second surah, the cow, the author claims in some way or the other (I don't remember his exact words) that this surah is about how Jews are evildoers and have betrayed God. However, in the actual text, the Quran refers to these people as the children of Israel and not jews. Note the difference. The author's translation and interpretation is anti-semetic whereas the original text is not. The author's intolerance can also be seen when he attempts to explain the verses in the Quran that are tolerant to Jews and Christians. He discounts the meaning and importance of these verses by saying that this only refers to Jews and Christians that existed before the Quran was revealed, or alternatively those Jews and Christians that follow the uncorrupted versions of the Bible and the Torah. Yet the Arabic text is clearly in present tense. So his explanation does not make sense.

It is true that some commentators of the Quran aspouse to SOME (not all) of Ali's intolerant views. An example of such a commentator is Ibn Al-Kathir However, Sayyid Qutb and Allamah Tabitabi'i, who wrote two of the most extensive and notable commentaries of the Quran (they used the recommended method of explaining the Quran using the Quran) provide more pluralistic and tolerant interpretations of the verses of the Quran.

I highly recommend Yousef Ali's translation over this one. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the quality of the actual publication is good and it is very organized.

The Qur'an 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I finally got around to reading this translation of the Qur'an. I gave it five stars to counter act some of the one star reviews. Im a Christian and still am. But I will admit I no longer view Islam as evil, or the Qur'an as a bad book. Quite the contrary I was pleasently surprised with beauty of the poetry, and the core message is very similar to Christianity. I would have a lot more in common with a Muslim than I would with an atheist for example. Taking the time to read through the book, I realize that living for God, regardless if you call Him Jehovah, or Allah, will lead you to live a more righteous life and to a better path on which to travel the hard road of life. The core morals taught by Muhammad line up with those taught by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Of course I disagree with Muslims over the Deity of Christ, I still find their religion agrees with my morals, and is more peaceful than the media frenzy would have someone believe. I believe these terrorists are the exception, and most Muslims are good religious people if they are following the teachings in this book. God bless you.

Editorial Review:

This English translation of the Qur'an is a compilation of the Muslim faith's Final Revelation from God to mankind through the last Prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon Him. The Qur'an has a wealth of information--both worldly wisdom and intellectual concepts--providing a code of life for humankind generally and Muslims in particular. Indeed, the Qur'an's miracle lies in its ability to offer something to non-believers and everything to believers. This edition is fully indexed.

Dawood Koran from Penguin Classics 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

OK, I have an Arabic speaking friend who criticizes all English translations of the Koran. Because Dawood wasn't available online, as are Pickthal, Shakir, and others, I bought a copy, and as far as translations go, it's probably as good as you're going to get in English. Yusuf Ali is *soft* in his rendering, and you're going to need supporting books like the Tafsirs, Hadiths, and Sira to get as much understanding of Mohammad as possible. Make no mistake, Islam is Mohammad and his belief system. Know the man behind the cloak of this religion, and you'll have a far better understanding of the images coming out of Islam on a daily basis. A Koran might be a gateway, but it will not bring you to understand Mohammad's character; that will be more clearly revealed by his Sunnah.

Good luck, and fasten your seatbelts; it's a very bumpy ride.

Editorial Review:

"The Koran" is universally accepted by Muslims to be the infallible Word of God as first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel nearly fourteen hundred years ago. Its 114 chapters, or surahs, recount the narratives central to Muslim belief, and together they form one of the world's most influential prophetic works and a literary masterpiece in its own right. But above all, the "Koran" provides the rules of conduct that remain fundamental to the Muslim faith today: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage to Mecca and absolute faith in God.

Excellent translation, Beautifully Presented 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the seventh time I have read the Qur'an all the way through and this is the most enjoyable translation I have ever read. The book is printed in Bahrain and is beautifully printed with pages 8 1/2 x 11 in size on heavy glossy paper. It has plenty of white space to make notes and everything is in readable type.

Muhammed Asad's translation is a gentle not in your face translation. While there are Briticisms [words not normally found in American speech] and English spellings, most words are not difficult to make out. I am impresed that everytime I have a question about what I've read, there is a note to clarify for those not familiar with Islam tradition.

I consider this to be a wonderful addition to my library.

Editorial Review:

The Koran is one of the most influential works in the history of literature, and the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic. It is the supreme authority and living source of all Islamic teaching, the sacred book that lays out all of Islam’s creeds, rituals, ethics, and laws. Revealed to the Prophet Mohammed by the angel Gabriel, it has been called “a glorious symphony” that moves men and women to ecstasy and awe. E. H. Palmer’s superb translation brings unsurpassed clarity to the text, while R. A. Nicholson’s erudite but accessible introduction places Mohammed’s story in a historical, religious, and social context that illuminates the Koran’s sometimes conflicting dictates and revelations.

Editorial Review:

Foreword by Ibn Warraq

This comprehensive, meticulously documented collection of scholarly articles presents indisputable evidence that a readily discernible, uniquely Islamic antisemitism--a specific Muslim hatred of Jews--has been expressed continuously since the advent of Islam. Debunking the conventional wisdom, which continues to assert that Muslim animosity toward Jews is entirely a 20th-century phenomenon fueled mainly by the protracted Arab-Israeli conflict, leading scholars provide example after example of antisemitic motifs in Muslim documents reaching back to the beginnings of Islam.

The contributors show that the Koran itself is a significant source of hostility toward Jews, as well as other foundational Muslim texts including the hadith (the words and deeds of Muhammad as recorded by pious Muslim transmitters) and the sira (the earliest Muslim biographies of Muhammad). Many other examples are adduced in the writings of influential Muslim jurists, theologians, and scholars, from the Middle Ages through the contemporary era.

These primary sources, and seminal secondary analyses translated here for the first time into English--such as Hartwig Hirschfeld's mid-1880s essays on Muhammad's subjugation of the Jews of Medina and George Vajda's elegant, comprehensive 1937 study of the hadith--detail the sacralized rationale for Islam's anti-Jewish bigotry. Numerous complementary historical accounts illustrate the resulting plight of Jewish communities in the Muslim world across space and time, culminating in the genocidal threat posed to the Jews of Israel today.

Scholars, educators, and interested lay readers will find this collection an invaluable resource for understanding the phenomenon of Muslim antisemitism, past and present.

Editorial Review:

Fourteen centuries of Islamic thought have produced a legacy of interpretive readings of the Qu'ran written almost entirely by men. Now, with Qu'ran and Woman, Amina Wadud provides a first interpretive reading by a woman, a reading which validates the female voice in the Qu'ran and brings it out of the shadows. Muslim progressives have long argued that it is not the religion but patriarchal interpretation and implementation of the Qu'ran that have kept women oppressed. For many, the way to reform is the reexamination and reinterpretation of religious texts. Qu'ran and Woman contributes a gender inclusive reading to one of the most fundamental disciplines in Islamic thought, Qu'ranic exegesis. Wadud breaks down specific texts and key words which have been used to limit women's public and private role, even to justify violence toward Muslim women, revealing that their original meaning and context defy such interpretations. What her analysis clarifies is the lack of gender bias, precedence, or prejudice in the essential language of the Qur'an. Despite much Qu'ranic evidence about the significance of women, gender reform in Muslim society has been stubbornly resisted. Wadud's reading of the Qu'ran confirms women's equality and constitutes legitimate grounds for contesting the unequal treatment that women have experienced historically and continue to experience legally in Muslim communities. The Qu'ran does not prescribe one timeless and unchanging social structure for men and women, Wadud argues lucidly, affirming that the Qu'ran holds greater possibilities for guiding human society to a more fulfilling and productive mutual collaboration between men and women than as yet attained by Muslims or non-Muslims.

Possibly the best and most faithful 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

A.J. Arberry's translation of the Koran has taken pre-eminence among religious and world literature scholars. Although Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation of the Koran has pride of place in many English-speaking Islamic households, Arberry's work above all others renders the Koranic language in suitably appropriate, easily-comprehended, English.

Unlike any other translation before or since, Arberry's work adheres closely to the original Arabic syntax, meaning that this translation can easily be used in tandem with a recitation in Arabic of the Koran. Arberry's language is striking and beautiful, comparable to more recent offerings from N.J. Dawood and Thomas Cleary. Note, for example, the striking immediacy and rhythmic flow of this passage:

"He is God;
the Creator, the Maker, the Shaper.
To Him belong the Names Most Beautiful.
All that is in the heavens and the earth magnifies Him;
He is the All-mighty, the All-wise."
(Surah 59 'Hashr' v. 24)

Arberry eschews the Elizabethan intricacies of Abdullah Y. Ali and the reader will not find themselves fighting a river of parenthetical entries, as are found in Muhammad Asad and the infamous "Wahhabi Koran" of Muhammad Muhsin Khan.

All that being said, there are problems with the presentation of the translation. The verses are not numbered individually, although the paragraphing on each page helps in determining where verse divisions are. Arberry opts to adjust the layout of the text in accordance with the action or commands in the words themselves. This is a unique approach, but does tend to make difficulties for the reader hunting down a particular verse. Also, especially in the longer chapters ('Baqara' and 'Imran'), the numbering of the verses is off by about four.

The introductions to the two sections of the volume are fine discourses from the translator on the actual act of translating this book, but don't offer the first-time reader any introduction to the Koran itself--what it is, the purpose it serves, etc. There are also no footnotes at all in the text.

Overall, Arberry's work is a magnificent achievement, but one that is more suitable to the scholar than the casual reader. He is especially useful as a second Koran (with Oxford's Abdel Haleem offering being the first) or as a reference in English for one studying either the original text itself or the recitation of the Koran. For sure, Arberry's work belongs on the bookshelf of all who are interested in digging deeper into Islam, the Koran, or the great works of world literature.

Editorial Review:

The Muslim holy book, presented in Arberry's forty-year-old authoritative and lyrical translation, brings the fundamental principles and concepts of the Muslim religion to the English language. Reprint. 10,000 first printing.

Don't get impressed with this revised version. Why... 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Don't get impressed with the publicity and advertisement of Amana version of revised Quran. I have purchased other versions of Abdullah Yusuf Ali's work by other publishers including Amana USA, IPCI UK & the original publisher Sh Muhammad Ashraf of Lahore Pakistan. I have earlier printed copies of Abdullah Yusuf Ali's Quran text translation and commentary published by the original publisher Sh Muhammad Ashraf of Lahore. One copy is published in 1937, second printed before 9/11 and I bought another one recently.

I am extremely disappointed that all recent versions published after 9/11 have many changes in the translation and commentary, all made in the name of modernization and revision. But unfortunately these changes are in such key topics e.g. women dress code and usury that do not do justice with the open mindedness of the Quranic Arabic text. Abdullah Yusuf Ali's commentary was already very modern, comprehensive and open minded and hence there was no reason for his commentaries to be revised or modernized by any publisher. There was no reason to add the cultural and Muslim native land's influence into these revised editions by the publishers after 9/11.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali had benefited from the Muslim historians and Quran commentators belonging to the 8th till 14th century CE and written an exceptionally versatile translation and commentary that tries to match the Superior Quranic Arabic text and its wider meaning. Unfortunately new publishers have revised and deleted the portions in the commentary where Abdullah Yusuf Ali had mentioned key facts of the historical background for better understanding of the context of verses. These versions misguide the new generation by brain washing them into cultural influence and neglecting the original historical background. These historical backgrounds mentioned by Abdullah Yusuf Ali are the context of the verses which were often revealed in response to a crisis or a question that had arisen in the community of Prophet Muhammad in Madina and Makkah at that time. Abdullah Yusuf Ali had laid the principle of extracting the understanding of Quran from these historical incidences. This was practiced by him and various early generation Muslim scholars.

These revisions are pure dishonesty with the work of this great scholar who has translated Arabic Quran into English keeping the universal nature of message in mind regarding people of different nations, cultures and faiths. The biographer of Abdullah Yusuf Ali has also mentioned this problem with revised editions. Check Wikipedia to confirm.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali died in 1952. Until his death, none of the publisher changed anything in his manuscript. I can confirm this since I have another copy of his work published by Hafner Publishing Company New York USA, just before his death. After a long search for a new published copy of Abdullah Yusuf Ali's original work, I found that there is only one original version available now published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an. This version is the best available and minimally adulterated version of Abdullah Yusuf Ali's work in the market. As far as I can check from the 3rd edition published in 1937 (which I have one copy), only one phrase is missing in the commentary of Chapter 33 verse 59 in note 3764 where the following phrase is missed out "The times were those of insecurity (See next verse No. 60)". Fortunately rest of the Quranic translation and commentary is free of such adulterations and I congratulate that company for keeping the originality of the work. The above mentioned omission has been reported to the company. The Tahrike Tarsile Version is available on Amazon.com,here is the link The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary
