Very hard pill to swollow 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is very informative, however, there were many times I was ready to throw this book against the wall. I did this study with my Baptist church's small group. I am a pretty liberal Christian, so I disagreed with several points. However, once I got over my initial strong negative feelings towards Nancy's views, I came to understand what she was trying to say. This provided for some heated discussions and really was one of the best small group studies I've ever been apart of, if for the debating if nothing else.

DEFINATELY MUST READ...LIFE CHANGING!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was amazed to see that there were negative reviews on this book. Like another review said...I can't imagine reading this book and not have it change your life! I have never wanted to finish a book so quickly...I was so eager to continue reading from the very begining. This was so freeing for me to recognize that so many of my negative thoughts are from the enemy. The enemy doesn't want us to know the truth...and will do anything in his power to succeed...he feeds on our insecurities and makes us think we are the way we are and that's that. This book is eye opening to Gods word...His Truth...and the reality of the enemy. I believe if anyone has a problem with this book...it's because they have unresolved issues that they are holding on to and haven't given those issues over to God yet. Pray before you read it that you will have an open heart and mind to learn what God wants you to. I told all of my friends about this book and I hope it continues down the line.

Editorial Review:

The lies Christian women believe are at the root of their struggles. In Lies Women Believe, Nancy Leigh DeMoss exposes areas of deception common to many Christian women -- lies about God, sin, priorities, marriage and family, emotions, and more. She deals honestly with women's delusions and illusions and then gently leads them to the truth of God's word that leads to true freedom.

Editorial Review:

A groundbreaking book about Americans searching for faith and mutual respect, The Faith Club weaves the story of three women, their three religions, and their urgent quest to understand one another.

After September 11, Ranya Idliby, an American Muslim of Palestinian descent, faced constant questions about Islam, God, and death from her children, the only Muslims in their classrooms. Inspired by a story about Muhammad, Ranya reached out to two other mothers to write an interfaith children's book that would highlight the connections between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. After just a few meetings, however, the women realized that they themselves needed an honest and open environment where they could admit -- and discuss -- their concerns, stereotypes, and misunderstandings. After hours of soul-searching about the issues that divided them, Ranya, Suzanne, and Priscilla grew close enough to discover and explore what united them.

A memoir of spiritual reflections in three voices, The Faith Club has spawned interfaith discussion groups in churches, temples, mosques, and other community settings. It will make you feel as if you are eavesdropping on the authors' private thoughts, provocative discussions, and often-controversial opinions and conclusions.

As the authors reveal their deepest beliefs, you watch the blossoming of a profound interfaith friendship and the birth of a new way of relating to others. And this new edition provides all the materials you need for forming your own Faith Club, including sections in Hebrew and Arabic.

Pioneering, timely, deeply thoughtful, and full of hope, The Faith Club's caring message will resonate with people of all faiths.

Not sure I would pay the full price for this again.... 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is as skewed. The statistics are skewed and the survey findings are not able to be generalized to the overall population. There was no random sampling, and so the findings were significant because they surveyed significant churches and failing church.... several times the data in the form of graphs show something totally different than what they state their findings are, which makes the skewing even more evident than usual, if they had let the data say what the data says, and not force the data to try and say what they want it to say their findings probably would be not substantial and would not need to have a book written.

Editorial Review:

The simple revolution has begun. From the design of the iPod to the uncluttered Google home page, simple ideas are changing the world.

Simple Church clearly calls for Christians to return to the simple gospel-sharing methods of Jesus. No bells or whistles required, so to speak.

Based on case studies of four hundred American churches, authors Thom Rainer and Eric Geiger prove that the process for making disciples has quite often become too complex. Simple churches are thriving, and they are doing so by taking these four ideas to heart: Clarity. Movement. Alignment. Focus.

Each idea is examined here, simply showing why it is time to simplify.

Catholicim marries Hinduism has child 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book and it has a lot of helpful advice for anyone who is struggling to be happy. It has helped at least two of my friends and myself to focus on what DeMello calls being "aware" or understanding why things make you happy or unhappy and how to overcome the unhappy times.

It has some excellent opinions about love as letting the object be free, rather than what many call love which is really manipulation, control, and covetness.

Awareness by Anthony de Mello 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Awareness was recommended by a friend who has bought more than 10 books to give away to friends. It is a great way to understand how your mind can torment you and keep you in addictions of all kinds. A good book to reread often to help move forward in emotional wellbeing.

I'm happy I became aware of "Awareness" because it's amazing! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm a big fan of Eckhart Tolle and became aware of "Awareness" by word of mouth from other Tolle fans. I couldn't put the book down; read it in one sitting. As I was reading, I tripped out that the author was actually a priest! His style of writing is straight to the point, "in your face." Picture a highly energetic motivational speaker who genuinely wants you to change for the better; well that's what I pictured. He speaks the truth bluntly. It'll open your eyes, make you see things from a totally new angle.

Although I love Tolle's "The Power of Now," for someone who's new to this, I would recommend reading "Awareness" first because it's much easier to understand. I had to read Tolle's books a few times before I really had an understanding. And if you're already familiar and enjoyed Tolle's works, you will surely enjoy this. "Awareness" covers a lot of material that Tolle goes over: disidentifying with thoughts, labeling, presence (not covered in depth like Tolle though), and more. But Anthony covers the material in a different, more down-to-earth type style. If you had trouble understanding Tolle, "Awareness" could probably help you have a better understanding.

You can easily find live recordings online of Anthony speaking to an audience. He's not highly energetic as I had in mind, but he doesn't need to be. There's surely some magical quality when Anthony speaks. If you check out the audience, you'll notice that they are all giving Anthony their full undivided attention. They're transfixed, hanging on his every word. "Awareness" is actually a transcription of his live talks. Just like how the audience is transfixed seeing Anthony live, you too will be transfixed reading the words just like how I was. Amazing read!

Editorial Review:

"This is your wake-up call! You may not have even realized you were sleepwalking. Most of us are most of the time. Awareness is an eye-opener. It's Anthony de Mello telling you gently but firmly, "It's time to get up now".--Charles Osgood of The Osgood File.

Great read for all who search 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I found this book very well researched and very well written. It is not written like a textbook but it has answers to many questions that arise in a complex world where Christians, atheists and everyone in between need to try to understand one another. To live together in todays society is a challenge for those who have faith and want to hold true to it in the barrage of opinions. Thank you Mr. D'Souza for sharing your knowledge, your research and your own faith.

Editorial Review:

Today, more than ever, Christianity is under attack. In his new book, bestselling author Dinesh D'Souza takes on the leading critics of Christianity, from E. O. Wilson to Richard Dawkins. D'Souza shows that, against all expectations, Christianity is the fastest-growing religion in the world and that secularism and atheism are on the decline. This, D'Souza contends, explains the panicky efforts by atheists to discredit Christianity, exclude it from the public sphere, and indoctrinate schoolchildren in atheist doctrine masquerading as science.

Honest 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I am halfway through it, and so far it is, in my opinion, the most honest book ever written by a pastor . . . I am loving it!

Another great book by John Ortberg 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have now read 3 of John Ortberg's books and am also presently in a short bible study he co-wrote.

I love him.
I love his story's. What a great story teller.
I love his jokes.

One of my favorite treats is on my 2 work days, I go to lunch alone. The same restaurant....every Tuesday and Wednesday, and I read.

With John's work, I find myself laughing out loud, in the restaurant, as I savor one of his stories.

Then, in the next paragraph, he's moved my heart and I'm trying to hide my tears.

I love how He makes my Lord and Savior feel so close to me.

He knows the bible so well and he makes it so very applicable to EVERY situation I find myself in...be it a blessing or a challenge.

John is very real. There is no lecturing or 'talking down' to his reader. I guess 'authentic' is a good word for him.

This book especially reveals him as an 'every man' kind of guy.

He lays out his own doubts in this book and doesn't candy coat or defend his own issues with doubt.

I love how he interjects scripture. With out being 'preachy'

I do not lend out my Ortberg books. I've offered to...and then I never want to part with them. I am reading 'Everyone's Normal till You Get to Know them' for the second time. I highlight John's books. I make smiley faces where they make me laugh and I circle what breaks my heart.

I have overcome my Ortberg-hording by just buying his book for my friends/loved ones and even my Boss! (He's a great guy and lover of Christ.)
John is an excellent author for that new believer. All of his books are great for that friend you want to introduce to Christ. Yet someone that is more mature in their walk will be refreshed, renewed and refined in their belief.

So there you have it.

I've never felt about an author the way I do about John Ortberg.
Buy this book with confidence...you'll enjoy it and grow from it.
Better yet, save on shipping and just buy a few of his works. You'll be back for more. : )

Editorial Review:

John Ortberg demonstrates how doubt is very much a part of faith and how uncertainty can lead to trust. “The beliefs that really matter,” he writes, “are the ones that guide our behavior.” We all hope, Ortberg writes, but we cannot hope without faith, and so we must not hope for something but someone?Jesus Christ.

The start to an exciting and fast-paced series 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Prolific author Ted Dekker once again demonstrates his superior skill at weaving in multi-level themes, character profiles and belief systems, all framed within an action-packed dynamo of thrilling chase, fight and escape scenes.

In CHOSEN, the first installment of the Lost Books series, Dekker has the famed Thomas Hunter inciting his forest dwellers to fight for the chance to win one of four top leadership positions. As an unlikely candidate because of his size and interest in books, Johnis doesn't think he has a chance. But by using his mind and his heart, he outwits and outfights other choice warriors and is appointed one of the four to go on a mission issued by Hunter. With little to recommend himself, Johnis is at first ridiculed by his fellow warriors, who see little worth in this upstart.

Together, Johnis, Darsal, Billos and Silvie head toward the desert and the Horde. En route, Johnis begins seeing signs of the evil bat-like mythical creatures, the Shataiki, swarming in the trees above their heads. They are attacked and divided, and all too soon are confronted by Teeleh, the originator of all evil and instigator of much pain against Elyon's people, the forest dwellers. Johnis must try to save his comrades and trick Teeleh into setting them free in exchange for one of the seven lost books of history. After gaining help from the Roush, the pure-hearted bat-like counterparts to the Shataiki, all four warriors get further lessons in listening to wise counsel and not going off task because of fear.

After almost dying due to lack of cleansing in the fresh water, Johnis, Darsal, Billos and Silvie do manage to join together with the aid of the Roush and rescue two of the seven books. Each of the teens gains much insight and fortitude as they re-enter their forest dweller camp and report on their mission. Hunter sees something special in Johnis and predicts his rise as the leader of his people.

Dekker concludes CHOSEN on a high note of community rejoicing and celebration, but hints that the second installment will have the four heroes relying on every ounce of skill, cunning and heartfelt courage to meet their next challenge. Riveting and fast-paced, readers will find the Lost Books series up to the author's usual excellent standard.

Editorial Review:

Think with your heart and prepare to die for you have been Chosen.

The land of the Forest Dwellers has been decimated by the Horde under the watchful eye of the vilest of all creatures, Teeleh. Thomas Hunter, supreme commander of the Forest Guard, is forced to lower the recruitment age of his army from 18 to 16. From among thousands, four new recruits are chosen to lead--and perhaps die--for the greater good.

The chosen four are sent on a quest to prove their character, but their mission takes a dramatic turn when they are intercepted, sworn to secrecy, and redirected to a different endgame. Now they must find the seven lost Books of History. Books that have power over the past, present, and future. Books whose words are alive. Books sought by the Dark One that control not only the destiny of their world . . . but that of ours as well.

Editorial Review:

Why do we expect justice? Why do we crave spirituality? Why are we attracted to beauty? Why are relationships often so painful? And how will the world be made right? These are not simply perennial questions all generations must struggle with, but, according to N. T. Wright, are the very echoes of a voice we dimly perceive but deeply long to hear. In fact, these questions take us to the heart of who God is and what He wants from us.

For two thousand years, Christianity has claimed to solve these mysteries, and this renowned biblical scholar and Anglican bishop shows that it still can today. Not since C. S. Lewis's classic summary of the faith, Mere Christianity, has such a wise and thorough scholar taken the time to explain to anyone who wants to know what Christianity really is and how it is practiced. Wright makes the case for Christian faith from the ground up, assuming that the reader has no knowledge of (and perhaps even some aversion to) religion in general and Christianity in particular.

Simply Christian walks the reader through the Christian faith step by step and question by question. With simple yet exciting and accessible prose, Wright challenges skeptics by offering explanations for even the toughest doubt-filled dilemmas, leaving believers with a reason for renewed faith. For anyone who wants to travel beyond the controversies that can obscure what the Christian faith really stands for, this simple book is the perfect vehicle for that journey.

Editorial Review:

Through the Apostles, we come to Jesus himself." -- Pope Benedict XVI

In this fascinating and inspirational journey with the chosen disciples of Jesus, Pope Benedict XVI demonstrates a profound, unbreakable continuity -- built upon the foundation of the Apostles and alive in the succession of the Apostles -- by which Christ is present today in His Church.

"At the start of the third millennium, my beloved predecessor John Paul II invited the Church to contemplate the Face of Christ (cf. Novo Millennio Ineunte, n. 16 ff.). Continuing in the same direction, I would like to show in this book how it is precisely the light of that Face that is reflected on the face of the Church (cf. Lumen Gentium, n. 1), notwithstanding the limits and shadows of our fragile and sinful humanity. After Mary, a pure reflection of the light of Christ, it is from the Apostles, through their word and witness, that we receive the truth of Christ. Their mission is not isolated, however, but is situated wthin a mystery of communion that involves the entire People of God and is carried out in stages from the Old to the New Covenant." -- From The Apostles
