Editorial Review:

For Alex James, music had always been a door to a more exciting life—a way to travel, meet new people, and, hopefully, pick up girls. But as bass player of Blur—one of the most successful British bands of all time—his journey was more exciting and extreme than he could ever have predicted. Success catapulted him from a slug-infested squat in Camberwell to a world of private jets and world-class restaurants. As "the second drunkest member of the world’s drunkest band" Alex James's life was always chaotic, but he retained a boundless enthusiasm and curiosity at odds with his hedonistic lifestyle. From nights in the Groucho with Damien Hirst, to dancing to Sister Sledge with Björk, to being bitten on the nose by the lead singer of Iron Maiden, he offers a fascinating and hilarious insight into the world of celebrity. At its heart, however, this is the picaresque tale of one man’s search to find meaning and happiness in an increasingly surreal world. Pleasingly unrepentant but nonetheless a reformed man, Alex James is the perfect chronicler of his generation—witty, frank and brimming with joie de vivre. A Bit of a Blur is as charming, funny, and deliciously disreputable as its author.

I bought this looking for good bedtime stories for my son. I might not have bought it had I looked at it in a store. The pictures are wonderfully familiar but the story lacked umph! Borrow it from the library if you must!

A better productThe Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name

This story about prayer is a positive and interesting look at the importance and meaning of prayer in everyday life. It deals with the common practice of praying as part of youth sports activities and gives a thoughtful take on this issue. It will be appreciated by parents and children alike.

Editorial Review:

Although saying bedtime prayers is a habit in the Bear household, Brother Bear isn’t sure why they do it. But when he sees a friend on his baseball team praying at the game, he decides to try it himself. Things don’t work out as he expects though, and Brother Bear learns that although prayers are always answered, they aren’t always answered as we expect.

Christmas Shoes have a few holes 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I can't resist the glittering, shiny covers of the Christmas Books at my bookstore. Each year I buy a few and this year I bought The Christmas Shoes. The book is an easy read and is suitable for young people. The story is a classic story and predictable.

As an author, I found the point of view changes annoying. At one time, Robert magically knows what's going on after he leaves his mother's house. How is that possible? I counted three clichés on one page.

Still, the story is touching and I shed a few tears. It's worth reading just as a reminder of the important things in life.

Great Book For Anyone 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is heartwarming and great read for anyone of any age. It would be a wonderful choice to read to a Sunday School class or to your children.

An Emotional Experience 5 out of 5 stars.

This book by Ms. Donna Van Liere is one in a million. I heard the song before I ever read the book. The song itself was an emotional one. However, I never knew the TRUE meaning of being a parent until I read that book. I read this book and it changed me, just as the character Robert Layton, was changed,as well as the character, Maggie~she showed me that life is short and can be taken from anyone at anytime and you need to truly cherish the times with those you love. I recommend this book to all those who need an uplifting and life changing experience. She is a talented author. She helped to see that I need to give MORE of MYSELF to my children and family. Thank you, Ms. Van Liere, for a truly wonderful book!!!!

Outstanding! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book opened my eyes to some things that had not occured to me before. My copy is all dog-eared and marked up with a yellow highlighter after having read it. I can't imagine the research that must have gone into connecting times that the US pressured Israel to divide her land in exchange for peace, to incredible disasters that have subsequently come upon America. The chapter titled "Jerusalem, God's Anvil" speaks loudly as to how God continues to use the Jewish people to reveal Himself to the world as He said that He would through His word.

If you have any interest in the history of Zionism, the roots of Islamofascism, and the soon coming of the Day of the Lord, get this book. It's extremely well researched and easy to read.

Editorial Review:

God s everlasting promise to bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel is still in effect today.  Throughout its history, America has been in a unique position to bless the Jewish people, and has experienced many blessings as a result.  In more recent years, however, America has failed to consistently stand by Israel and suffered dramatic disasters.

In this interesting and thorough book, McTernan traces the history of the Jewish people in America and how America s spectacular rise to power was tied to blessing the Jews.  He examines America s integral role in fulfilling God s plan for the rebirth of the Jewish nation, and details the times when our nation defaulted on this call.  Through a step-by-step analysis of political events, McTernan gives conclusive proof that God s judgment on those who curse Israel is still active.  In every case where America has failed Israel, it has faced dramatic consequences within 24 hours.

Editorial Review:

This has been a year of global crisis. The oil crisis with its escalating prices at the gas station has created enormous stress for many Americans. Coming right on the heels of that, America is also facing an economic crisis that many are saying is similar to what happened in America just before the Great Depression. Americans are asking: What is happening?...When will it end?...and Where will it go before it ends?

In Financial Armageddon, successful businessman and pastor John Hagee addresses the subject of global oil and economic crisis head on, demonstrating clearly that God has much to say about both the current oil and economic crises and our personal finances in general.
Christians like every other American should know how these issues are going to affect their personal finances. But even more important to consider as Christians is this: What does God have to say about global events affecting America and the world, and what advice does He give to His children for avoiding the devastation of financial collapse?

God has already revealed the information we need to understand how Bible prophecy intersects with world events, and has given us an investment manual for knowing how to manage our personal finance. It is the Word of God! As you read, remember that God has promised to bless His people. Rest assured that God is in control. You can have peace and financial security even when the world seems to be collapsing around you. Rather than hit the panic button, concentrate on finding ways to glorify God in the way you live. Trust our Heavenly Father He will never let you down.

Editorial Review:

Richard Paul Evans' #1 New York Times bestseller The Christmas Box has become a holiday classic, a tale so touching that it continues to "tug families' heartstrings" (USA Today). His exquisite prequel, Timepiece, and The Letter completed the glorious trilogy of the Parkin family. Now all three magical stories are compiled in one extraordinary treasury that -reaches into that place where all broken hearts will forever be made whole" (The Star, Chicago).

The Christmas Box

A Christmas story unlike any other, The Christmas Box is the poignant tale of a widow and the young family who moves in with her. Together, they discover the first gift of Christmas -- and what the holiday is really all about.

Timepiece

Tracing the lives of a young couple as they discover love, loyalty, and the power of forgiveness, Timepiece is a tale of wisdom and of hope -- and a gentle reminder that the connections from one generation to the next are indelible.

The Letter

A mysterious letter is found at the grave of a couple's only child in this unforgettable conclusion to the collection. As they face love's greatest challenge, they find its truest meaning and learn the lessons that are echoed throughout.

A different kind of Bible book for kids 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

In Postmodern Children's Ministry, Ivy Beckwith writes of the danger of reducing the Bible to "doctrinal tenets, moral absolutes, tips for better living, or stories of heroes to be emulated." Instead of using the Bible to "teach children moral lessons...we need the Bible to introduce children to God, God's story, and God's ways."

That's why I was excited to discover Charles F. Boyd's book, What God Has Always Wanted: The Bible's Big Idea from Genesis through Revelation. It answers the question, "What's the Bible about anyway?" and introduces the story of Scripture to children.

Boyd says, "I believe we do a good job teaching children Bible stories, but we haven't done as good a job of teaching the Bible's story. By setting the gospel in the overall storyline of the Bible, I believe children can better see how Jesus and His friendship is truly what ties the Bible's story together from start to finish."

Boyd clearly presents the story of Scripture from creation and fall to Jesus and the new creation. It invites children to become participants in the story by becoming friends with God. Boyd also includes a helpful glossary to help adults answer questions that kids might raise as they read the book together.

Here's the real genius of the book: it's not just a children's book, it is a "parenting book disguised as a children's book." It equips parents and teachers to share the gospel with kids in a way that they will understand.

There are lots of entertaining books, movies, and curriculum for kids. What God Has Always Wanted moves beyond the normal approach of telling individual stories and teaching moral lessons, and tells God's story. This is a very encouraging book for kids, and I highly recommend it for churches, parents, teachers, and grandparents.

Editorial Review:

This isn't just a children's book. This book is for parents - parents who care deeply about passing on a legacy of faith in Christ. Parents who invite their children to "ask Jesus into your heart."

But what does that phrase really mean? And is it biblical? In my role as pastor and parent, I've found that when asked, many children don't understand that this phrase is symbolic. Jesus does not step into their chests to live there.

Seeing this disconnect between a grown-up's metaphor and a child's understanding, I wrote What God Has Always Wanted. It helps children understand the simple Gospel message: God desires to live in friendship with the people He created, now and forever. It gives the big-picture story of the Bible, from Genesis through Revelation.

Did you know that what God has always wanted is for you to become one of his friends?

Not much is new 2 out of 5 stars.

Please understand, I've read all of Ms. Lewis' books and enjoyed greatly her peek into Amish life, however, this one (as well as THE PARTING), is crawling at a pace that is painful. I was over half way through and nothing had happened! Just a retelling of the same information over and over. Now I realize that a factor in Amish life is the pace, but when writing fiction, the author has an obligation to keep his or her reader awake. I'm beginning to wonder if she has said all there is to say about Amish life and as a result, the repetition in succeeding books is just inevitable. I realize the splits in the church are a factor she hasn't touched on before but at this point the subject is just not engaging my interest and I feel like I've read it all before. I will concede that she must be going somewhere with all this but right now, this series is wearing me out and I'm not sure I'm motivated to read the rest of the Nellie Fisher books.

Editorial Review:

The Church Split Has Not Extinguished Their Love,

Caleb Yoder's father has forbidden him to court Nellie Mae Fisher, but words alone cannot stop Caleb's devotion. Yet if he continues to pursue Nellie, he risks losing everything.

Nellie, too, is torn. She longs to marry her Old Order beau but cannot ignore the gentle pull she feels toward the faith of her New Order family. Can she and her beloved satisfy the expectations of the People while remaining true to their hearts?
