Fabulous! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am so impressed with this book - and so surprised.
Here you have a book by one of America's top football coaches and, most impressively, he writes about his mother's gratitude at being given the opportunity to be of service to her community, and how this specifically impacted his approach to football and the coaching of young people.
He describes her approach to life as 'Attitude' - being grateful for the opportunity to be of service to others, to look outward at how you can be of service rather than inward at how you are doing, as the basis for excellence as an athlete (or in your work and life).
He also talks about excellence as an approach that pertains to your life as a whole - how do you show up at home after work, how do you treat people in stressful situations, how do you bring out the best in a player, a child, a passing acquaintance.

I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in having a great life - it is not just about football!
If you enjoy this book, I also highly recommend: Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment and How to Create a Magical Relationship both by Ariel and Shya Kane. They also write about excellence and suggest, like Tressel's mother, being of service to others, especially in the little challenges that show up moment to moment, rather than having your attention on yourself.
It is so nice to see so many authors writing about how to have success, and successful lives, based on what Tressel describes as gratitude, taking care of others, and going for excellence in everything you do.

Editorial Review:

The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life shares Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel's "Big Ten" fundamentals for success: Attitude, Discipline, Faith, Handling Adversity & Success, Excellence, Love, Toughness, Responsibility, Team, and Hope. Peppered with personal stories from Tressel's storied coaching career, the book shares the fundamental lessons that he has been imparting to his players for the past 20 years. A perfect blend of football stories, spiritual insights, motivational reading, and practical application, The Winners Manual provides an inside look at the core philosophy that has served as the foundation for one of the most successful college football programs of all time. Includes 8 pages of color photos and a foreword from NYT best-selling author John Maxwell.

Editorial Review:

A generation stands on the brink of a "rebelution."

A growing movement of young people is rebelling against the low expectations of today's culture by choosing to "do hard things" for the glory of God. And Alex and Brett Harris are leading the charge.

Do Hard Things is the Harris twins' revolutionary message in its purest and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit their potential.

Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life. Then they map out five powerful ways teens can respond for personal and social change.

Written by teens for teens, Do Hard Things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical examples, and stories of real-life rebelutionaries in action. This rallying cry from the heart of an already-happening teen revolution challenges a generation to lay claim to a brighter future, starting today.

Very good 4 out of 5 stars.

I passed this book onto a couple who where having marital problems and this is one of their most recommended books on the shelf. They had nothing but good things to say except they wish they had it when they first got married.
Other book that really worked for me and my friends and I highly recommend it is: I Love You. Now What?: Falling in Love is a Mystery, Keeping It Isn't

Improve your marriage! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book can change your marriage! It helps husbands see that their wife's greatest need is for love; and wives see that their husband's greatest need is for respect. Dr. Eggerichs reveals three cycles in a marriage that helps you understand how love and respect compliment each other.

Awesome and insightful book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Don't be fooled by those who down-talk this book. The book was right on point. Some reviews say the author talks down on women and say it's their fault men don't love them. They fail to mention that it teaches form men to make peace humbly in order to defuse the disagreement and it promotes unconditional love and a stronger relationship with God as the reward for faithfully trying to reconcile the marriage whether or not your spouse is willing to do the same.

While reading this book, I could see myself as well as my fiancée in the stories and illustrations he gives. I know my fiancée loves me but I feel joy when I know she looks up to me and respects me and uplifts me to her friends and co-workers. I also can feel a warmness from her when I stroke her face, look in her eyes, play with her hair, talk with her about her problems without being Mr. Fix-it.

This book goes over all this and more. Everything is backed up by scripture - something none of the negative reviewers can refute.

Have an open mind and more importantly, an open heart when reading this book so that God through this book can reveal your true self and counsel you to a blessed marriage. I'm convinced that the negative reviewers did not have this mindset when reading this book. Else they would have focused on the truth and not the rinky dink things like his mentioning of PMS-ing or their belief that he was blaming women for the reason men being the way they are.

Get the book, its worth it!

Editorial Review:

Based upon Ephesians 5:33 and extensive biblical and psychological research, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs reveals the power of unconditional love and unconditional respect and how husbands and wives can reap the benefits of marriage that God intended.

MERE CHRISTIANITY represents an excellent distillation of Lewis' thought on the essential elements of Christianity. He knows, of course, that the word 'mere' can mean 'simple' or 'basic' but that it once meant 'pure' or 'essential'. This book gives you the supreme elements of Christian thought, but in simple, accessible terms. That is, of course, Lewis' forte--to depict the complex with a very light touch. Here he talks about such notions as human nature, Christian morality, virtue, and the triune God and he does so in chapter/segments slightly longer than sound bites. The reader is neither stretched on a rack of jargon and chop-logic nor asked to bear up under an onslaught of endless, vague verbiage. S/he is given the unvarnished truth of Christianity in clear terms and manageable segments. One can 'read in' the book, as one reads in the Bible or the Book of Common Prayer. This is the perfect introduction to Christian thought and the perfect introduction to the insights of Lewis the believer.

Editorial Review:

A forceful and accessible discussion of Christian belief that has become one of the most popular introductions to Christianity and one of the most popular of Lewis's books. Uncovers common ground upon which all Christians can stand together.

A book every Christian should read.. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think I've been waiting for this book for a long time. I think about all the "Christians" I've met who have been so bitter, so self-righteous, so mean-spirited, so quick to damn, that if you're not careful, your view of the church and Jesus himself can get very jaded. I found I wasn't alone.

David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons' book unChristian explores the disgust many people (with particular emphasis on the younger generation) have with Christians, and how this image has evolved. UnChristian shows that most 18-29-year-olds view Christian faith as hypocritical, insensitive, out of touch with reality, boring, confusing, irrelevant, bigoted, too political, old-fashioned, and the list grows. Maybe you've heard these labels yourself. Maybe you've heard these labels about your own church. And at some point, one or more of these labels applies to each one of us personally.

Of course the problem is the image of Christianity, rather than real, living faith in Jesus Christ. They like Jesus, but not the church. It's not God, it's these Christians they can't stand! But the responsibility in how that image has come about lies on the shoulders of many Christians, of all traditions and backgrounds. Too many things over the years have often taken priority over strong, sincere discipleship. They've taken priority over our first love. Kinnaman points out that in matters of the heart, in lifestyle -- from abusing someone, to viewing pornography, to saying mean things behind someone's back -- younger Christians (ages 18-29) are virtually no different from their non-Christian counterparts.

I can imagine many Christians getting angry about this book. But don't toss it aside, even if you're prepared not to agree. Listen to what Kinnaman and Lyons are saying, seriously, thoughtfully, prayerfully.

It's not too late. Whatever the reason for this image of Christianity, the image can change. It's time to stop ignoring the culture's frustration with us and our churches. There are many ways we can get real, strip ourselves of whatever drives our culture away, and reach out.

This is our wake-up call.

Editorial Review:

Based on groundbreaking Barna Group research, unChristian uncovers the negative perceptions young people have of Christianity and explores what can be done to reverse them.

Editorial Review:

The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time," according to author Rick Warren, the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, touted as one of the nation largest congregations. Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. Nonetheless, this is probably an excellent resource for devout Christians who crave a jumpstart back to worshipfulness. --Gail Hudson

Editorial Review:

If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby

An Interview with Joel Osteen

Q: Do you have a hero?

A: Of course, my greatest hero is Jesus Christ. He should be everyone's greatest hero. However, among men, I have two real heroes. My father, John Osteen, was not only the best father anyone could ever have, but was my best friend as well. He was a man of great integrity, and he taught me how important it was to incorporate Jesus Christ into every part of my life. Another of my heroes is Billy Graham who throughout the years has remained true to that which God called him to do and has done so with the utmost dedication, humility, and integrity.

Q: In today's conflicted world, how do you encourage people to maintain their faith?

A: As believers we should be assured that Jesus said He would never leave us nor forsake us. We should adopt a mindset that God wants to be involved in our everyday lives, through good times and difficult times. We should communicate with God throughout our day (to pray without ceasing), not just when we are in crisis. He cares about our lives even in the small things. There is no part of our lives that are insignificant to Him.

Q: What did working behind the scenes at Lakewood during your father's ministry inform how you preach today?

A: Really it all started for me when I was born. Our family never missed church; Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night, week in and week out. However, for 17 years I did produce and edit my father's sermons for television. I often joke that I attended one year of college and 17 years of seminary. For those 17 years, I would have to study my father's weekly sermons and then cut them down to a 28-minute TV program while maintaining the message. I guess I've listened to at least 1,500 of my father's messages.

Q: Your ministry reaches millions each week through television and the Internet. How has technology changed how people worship today?

A: Through telecommunications technology, especially the web, more Christian programming is available than ever before. Not only do people have more choices in Christian programming, but they can get as much as they want whenever they want it. I think that our use of technology results in people spending more of their time thinking about the things of God. However, I don't see technology replacing worship in the traditional sense--that is worshipping with other believers in a church. Everyone should belong to a good Bible-based church.

Q: In our busy lives, what is your advice for how we can slow things down and find peaceful moments?

A: Personally, I take time each morning to spend with God. I have a quiet place in my home or I find a quiet place if I am traveling where I pray and seek guidance from God. I think that is the best way for anyone to start their day; it really sets the tone for each day.

Q: As a father, what advice would you share with parents struggling with our fast-paced culture?

A: Victoria and I decided a long time ago that our family takes priority over most everything else. I tell people all the time that their families should be their first mission field. Today, it takes a great deal of our time and energy to make a living. We need to make sure our families don't get the short end of the stick and we need to make time for them. And, I am talking about "quality time"; no cell phones, no business calls, no outside distractions, just family.

This Book has Several Things going for it ..... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

1. This is a flow of consciousness type book which offers some very honest and personal insights from a talented writer.

2. A Christian point of view coming more from the left offers insight into both the strengths and shallowness that mirrors and demonstrates the strengths and shallowness of the right. There are many evangelicals who need to consider and question the far or even moderate right point of view that has dominated evangelicalism and this book is one of the better ones. It doesn't require agreement to benefit.

3. A genuinely enjoyable read with some "aha" moments along the way that the author sees in himself that many readers will relate to and grow from along the way.

I enjoyed it and particularly benefitted from the story of the Confession Booth. It's revealing to me that many who dislike and disparage this book apart from coming from some predictable camps, are those who lead with their intellect and lack in the areas of practical compassion and loving people as Christ loved them. That shouldn't be lost on anyone while reading these reviews in general.

Editorial Review:

"I never liked jazz music because jazz music doesn't resolve. . . . I used to not like God because God didn't resolve. But that was before any of this happened." In Donald Miller's early years, he was vaguely familiar with a distant God. But when he came to know Jesus Christ, he pursued the Christian life with great zeal. Within a few years he had a successful ministry that ultimately left him feeling empty, burned out, and, once again, far away from God. In this intimate, soul-searching account, Miller describes his remarkable journey back to a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God.

Editorial Review:

What’s going on in a man’s mind? From their early days, every woman has struggled to understand why males behave the way they do. Even long-married women who think they understand men have only scratched the surface. Beneath a man’s rugged exterior is an even more rugged, unmapped terrain. What bestselling author Shaunti Feldhahn’s research reveals about the inner lives of men will open women’s eyes to what the men in their life—boyfriends, brothers, husbands, and sons—are really thinking and feeling. Men want to be understood, but they’re afraid to “freak out” the women they love by confessing what is happening inside their heads. This book will guide women in how to provide the loving support that modern men want and need.

The Truth About His Inner Life

He Desperately Wants You to Know

What's going on in there? Ever been totally confused by something your man has said or done? Want to understand his secret desires and fears, his daily battles that you know nothing about?

In a woman-to-woman conversation you’ll never forget, Shaunti Feldhahn takes you beneath the surface into the inner lives of men. This book is about the things we just don’t ‘get’ about guys. With findings from a groundbreaking national survey and personal interviews of over one thousand men, For Women Only is full of eye-opening revelations you need to not only understand the man in your life, but to support and love him in the way he needs to be loved. Grounded in biblical hope, you will discover how to love your man for who he really is—not who you think he is.

Story Behind the Book

I had no idea how clueless I was about men until I interviewed a bunch of them for my last novel. Initially, I just wanted a little insight so I could write my main (male) character. But pretty soon I found myself astonished, over and over again blurting out, “That’s what you’re thinking?” So I did more interviews. After the novel hit shelves, dozens of women told me they also had been astonished by what I included. Clearly I wasn’t the only one who needed more insight on this!

To lay the groundwork for this nonfiction book, I wrote out the half-dozen things from these interviews that had most surprised me—things that appeared to be universal to most men—that women desperately needed to know. I conducted a professional national survey of men to test my findings. Yep—the survey substantiated every single one. These findings are fascinating—and they have already changed my life and marriage. I can’t wait to share them!
