Christianity without cost doesn't exist! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A Christian classic, The Cost of Discipleship is filled with countless gems of wisdom that run counter to the prevailing winds today that market the Christian life as one of ease and comfort. The book is not an easy read, but it is an encouraging and is probably more valuable for Christians today than even during Bonhoeffer's own time. The book is more than a call to costly discipleship, Bonhoeffer also dives into the Sermon on the Mount giving incredible insight in to the teachings of Christ in the Gospel of Matthew and also various aspects of the Christian life and the role of the Church. But the first couple of chapters of the book are worth the entire read. Bonhoeffer's radical discipleship can probably best be summarized in his famous line, "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." We see far too little of Bonhoeffer's commitment and dedication to the denial of self, taking up one's cross and following Christ...The Cost of Discipleship reminds those who follow Christ that sharing in His sufferings is the mark of a believer!

Editorial Review:

Before his arrest by the Nazis in 1943, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was head of a seminary of the German Confessing Church. In "The Cost of Discipleship", he focuses on the most treasured part of Christ's teaching, the Sermon on the Mount.

Editorial Review:

HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA REVEALS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING HAPPINESS AND A MEANINGFUL LIFE.

In How to See Yourself as You Really Are, the world's foremost Buddhist leader teaches listeners how to recognize and dispel misguided notions of self and embrace the world from a more realistic -- and loving -- perspective.

Step-by-step exercises help listeners shatter their false assumptions and ideas and see the world as it actually exists. His Holiness sets the stage for discovering the reality behind appearances. But getting past one's misconceptions is only a prelude to right action, and the final section describes how to harness the power of meditative concentration to the service of love, and vice versa, so that true altruistic enlightenment is attained. Enlivened by personal anecdotes and intimate accounts of the Dalai Lama's own life experiences, How to See Yourself as You Really Are is an inspirational and empowering guide to achieving self-awareness that can be enjoyed by spiritual seekers of all faiths.

Embracing Life As It Is 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

What a wonderful thing it would be if we all had a grandfather like Rachel Naomi Remen had. Since we don't, the next best thing might be to learn the lessons and experience the blessings by having her share her stories about him with us. She does so in a beautiful, almost under stated way that is never intrusive and leaves us with a feeling of deep appreciation. These are very human and moving parable like stories that enrich our connection to each other in almost imperceptible ways. Although this is definitely not a how to book, the stories may effect how we live our lives. Thank you to Dr. Remen.

Editorial Review:

As a small child, Rachel Remen sat at the feet of her grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the kabbalah, and learned the secret of life: that love and blessings given to others heals our loneliness, unhappiness, and in fact all our wounds. Remen uses her power as a master storyteller to bring to life the extraordinary blessings of ordinary existence. These exquisite pieces show us how we bless and serve each other most often without knowing it, how much life gives to us, and how many of our own blessings we have still yet to receive.

There is nothing more comforting than hearing Rachel's grandfather speak of love, life, and God to a small, lonely, and very spiritual child who was trying to find her way in an unspiritual world. These are stories for keeping at the bedside, for those dark nights when we go out in search of our souls.

Rachel's grandfather has blessed not only his beloved granddaughter but, through her, has blessed us all.

Great for devotional or small group studies 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have been going through this book with a ladies devotional group and have really enjoyed the message of this book as well as the take aways from this book. It is always nice to have a book that you get so much out of that you want to pass on to others- this is definately a book like that! It has great study questions and prayers to follow with to help you glean important reminders from the book!

Editorial Review:

Beth Moore wants readers to know if God could lift her out of the pit, He can get ANYONE out! She admits she wasn't just a visitor; this former pit-dweller had to be delivered from acres of life-accumulated dirt, bone-chilling darkness, spirit-deadening anger, heart-breaking desperation and mind-numbing confusion. The permanent lessons she learned in her desperation-shared in this very personal book-are lessons of hope for all of us. While she deeply empathizes with the hows and whys of life in the "pit," she continually points readers to the deliverance that awaits. Deliverance is for everyone, she proclaims-no matter how you got stuck, no matter how long you've been down, whether you think you deserve it or not. And in her straight-talking but loving style, she reminds readers that deliverance can begin for them this very day.

Editorial Review:

On a February day in 2008, Forrest Church sent a letter to the members of his congregation, informing them that he had terminal cancer; his life would now be measured in months, not years. In that remarkable letter, he wrote: "In more than one respect, I feel very lucky." He went on to promise that he would sum up his thoughts on the topics that had been so pervasive in his work—love and death—in a final book.

Church has been justly celebrated as a writer of American history, but his works of spiritual guidance have been especially valued for their insight and inspiration. As a minister, Church defined religion as "our human response to the dual reality of being alive and having to die." The goal of life, he tells us "is to live in such a way that our lives will prove worth dying for." This last book in his impressive oeuvre is imbued with ideas and exemplars for achieving that goal. The stories he offers—drawn from his own experiences and from the lives of his friends, family, and parishioners—are both engrossing and enlightening. Forrest Church's final work may be his most lasting gift to his readers.

"Forrest Church, a deeply spiritual but always practical visionary, is a minister to us all with this moving and instructive book on the lessons of life and death. A lovely, important book."
—Tom Brokaw

"Truly a gift, one that will echo in my own preaching and teaching, and in my own life as well. Like Moses gazing at the Promised Land he would not enter, Forrest Church blesses us with his eloquence, his faith, and, mostly, his love."
—Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People

"Love & Death is transformative. I was not prepared for the power of this splendid, soaring book. It totally captured me."
—Sylvia Ann Hewlett, author of Creating a Life

"In the midst of an extremity for which there is no euphemism—the prospect of his own imminent death—Forrest Church has written a book that defies the usual adjectives. It is poignant, moving, candid, and eloquent; but it is also so much more. Love & Death, a meditation on the end of life, is really a book about life—a book that shows us how to love ourselves and others, how to know God, how to live. I read it with inexpressible gratitude."
—James Atlas, author of My Life in the Middle Ages

"Forrest Church is one of our great prophetic intellectuals and compassionate voices. His poignant and wise words on the two ultimate realities of our journey—love and death—reveal his grand courage and vision."
—Cornel West, author of Race Matters

"This beautiful book by a matchless preacher, poet, and author is Forrest Church in his finest hour."
—Senator George McGovern

This is one of the great Christian classics that is a must read for every generation. It is not heady theology though it is thoroughly rooted in Scripture. It's underlying theme is the love of God for human kind expressed through his character. I felt very loved!

Excellent resource with action steps to put into practice now 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I recently delivered a presentation on the qualities of an effective leader. "The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader" was an excellent resource for my presentation. Not only does Maxwell clearly describe the 21 qualities, but he gives practical tips on how to improve in each of these areas. The book is well laid out which makes for an easy read. I highly recommend this book for burgeoning leaders and seasoned leaders.

A must read. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a must read for anyone involved in leadership. This book will take your leadership skills to deeper depths and higher highs.

A Good Companion 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

John Maxwell has done his best to make this an easy-to-read and useful text - and he has indeed made it an easy read. The chapters are short - most being around seven pages or about ten minutes worth of reading. Each of the twenty-one qualities can be read and digested independently; a great advantage for the time-efficient reader. The language Maxwell uses is simple and straightforward, almost bullet-like at times, and his format makes reading almost effortless. Each chapter contains a story, an explanation of what the story means in terms of leadership skills, and a reflection on the particular leadership virtue he is discussing. Then, so that the read can make use of the material, he adds a "bringing it home" paragraph and a "daily take-away" paragraph at the end of each lesson, making the text read much like a how-to workbook.

How useful this workbook might be to the reader however, is another matter. While Maxwell attempts to be as brief as possible, leadership is not a subject that lends itself to brevity. Concepts like Focus, Generosity, and Courage are complex and abstract; something Dorothy and her friends did not consider before they were off to see the wizard. And just as magical as it was for the wizard to pull these virtues from his bag, it would be equally magical for the reader to learn these characteristics from such abbreviated lessons. While the image of a leader that Maxwell depicts seems to be right on the mark, none of the personal leadership attributes are explained in enough detail to turn a mediocre leader into one who excels. Maxwell's condensed explanations give the reader the impression that leadership and vision can be quickly learned and mastered, which in the everyday world of leading is just not so.

The one real `turn off' in this book is the author's many references to his other book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership as the better text. Maxwell seems to continually remind the reader that Qualities of a Leader is better explained in this other, more complete text. This is always very disappointing to a reader and only leads one to feel that they have purchased the wrong book, and consequentially to wonder why it is worth reading and finally, to question why Maxwell bothered to write it at all. This is where, as with so many self-help books and programs, the intimate author-reader bond begins to feel like the much less intimate, and less comfortable, profiteer-consumer link.

I would recommend reading Qualities of a Leader for several reasons. Most leadership texts, this one included, generate reflection and lead to improvement. However Qualities of a Leader does not provide enough substance or outline changes in any direct or specific way, making this book a good companion or an excellent preface to the reading of more substantial leadership texts.

Editorial Review:

In the tradition of his million-seller The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, author John C. Maxwell now provides a concise, accessible leadership book that helps readers become more effective leaders from the inside out. Daily readings highlight twenty-one essential leadership qualities and include "Reflecting On It" and "Bringing It Home" sections that help readers integrate and apply each day's material.

Striving for the GOLD! 4 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Maxwell does it again. This book on leadership delivered exactly what I expected - strong thought and practical examples on how to acheive the highest and most efficient dimension in leadership.

Christian minister trumps them all with his down-to-earth thoughts on leadership 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read many so called business leadership books by titans of industry such as Welch of GE and Gerstner of IBM. Ironically, this christian minister trumps them all with his down-to-earth thoughts on leadership. Indeed, you will not find many pages without at least one good glowing nugget to "takeaway" and "tuckaway" for the future. Please do not be concerned that Maxwell is a minister. He is not "preachy" or evangelical. So far, I have read two of his books. I plan to read them all. This book should be mandatory reading for everyone who is a leader in any human endeavor, ranging from high tech business to Girl Scout cookie sales.

Editorial Review:

Leadership Gold took leadership guru John C. Maxwell a lifetime to write, and it delivers his most valuable lessons from forty years of leading.

A leader among leaders, John Maxwell promised himself early in his career that he wouldn't write this book until he was sixty. And now it's finally here. Leadership Gold took Maxwell a lifetime to write, and it delivers his most valuable lessons from forty years of leading. With his signature style, Maxwell comes alongside like a mentor, candidly taking readers through what feels like a one-on-one leadership program. Leadership Gold offers the best of the best, the tried-and-true lessons that no one but Maxwell can share.

A true work of scholarship 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This scholarly book traces the cultural and philosophical evolution of the human conception of God surrounding the 3 major monotheistic faiths. Armstrong explains the common lineage, the similarities and the variance of the conceptual understandings of God that shape people's lives...for better or for worse. This book is best understood if you have a little bit of background in religious and world history and it does require concentration. I particularly enjoyed this audio version because I could listen to certain chapters a second time. However, the audio book is abridged. This book encourages people to understand that no single person, group, or religious tradition has a monopoly of truth. It also calls people to learn about history to avoid the tragic consequences of claiming human agendas as the will of God.

Editorial Review:

"An admirable and impressive work of synthesis that will give insight and satisfaction to thousands of lay readers."
THE WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD
In this stunningly intelligent book, Karen Armstrong, one of Britain's foremost commentators on religious affairs, traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present. From classical philsophy and medieval mysticism to the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the modern age of skepticism, Karen Armstrong performs the near miracle of distilling the intellectual history of monotheism into one superbly readable volume, destined to take its place as a classic.
