Editorial Review:

The last command Jesus gave the church before he ascended to heaven was the Great Commission, the call for Christians to "make disciples of all the nations." But Christians have responded by making "Christians," not "disciples." This, according to brilliant scholar and renowned Christian thinker Dallas Willard, has been the church's Great Omission.

"The word disciple occurs 269 times in the New Testament," writes Willard. "Christian is found three times and was first introduced to refer precisely to disciples of Jesus. . . . The New Testament is a book about disciples, by disciples, and for disciples of Jesus Christ. But the point is not merely verbal. What is more important is that the kind of life we see in the earliest church is that of a special type of person. All of the assurances and benefits offered to humankind in the gospel evidently presuppose such a life and do not make realistic sense apart from it. The disciple of Jesus is not the deluxe or heavy-duty model of the Christian -- especially padded, textured, streamlined, and empowered for the fast lane on the straight and narrow way. He or she stands on the pages of the New Testament as the first level of basic transportation in the Kingdom of God."

Willard boldly challenges the thought that we can be Christians without being disciples, or call ourselves Christians without applying this understanding of life in the Kingdom of God to every aspect of life on earth. He calls on believers to restore what should be the heart of Christianity -- being active disciples of Jesus Christ. Willard shows us that in the school of life, we are apprentices of the Teacher whose brilliance encourages us to rise above traditional church understanding and embrace the true meaning of discipleship -- an active, concrete, 24/7 life with Jesus.

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the second book by Sarah Young that I have read and this book is equally as good as the first. I was delighted to hear/see that she had written another and that it was available on Amazon.com, where I now do most of my buying. The passages are short and sweet but very insightful and provide the reader with sustanance for a full day. I ended up ordering 7 books and gave them to all my friends. They, too, are thrilled with this book.

Editorial Review:

From your heart's deepest cry to life's joyful praises, nothing is off limits to Jesus.
Knowing Jesus on a deeper, more personal level means sharing all aspects of your life with Him…every day. In Dear Jesus, Sarah Young exemplifies what it means to do this-to dialogue with the Savior. She begins each of the 120 devotionals by sharing intimate struggles and longings that weigh on the heart-being preoccupied with problems; being dissatisfied with oneself, and other spiritual issues. Jesus then responds in His loving way by giving guidance and encouragement, using Scripture as the foundation from which His words flow. Readers will be drawn into the presence of God through these spiritual letters of grace.

Excellent and highly informative 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is another great work of expository teaching by Dr. John MacArthur, pastor of Grace Community Church and the president of Grace to You radio ministry. In this book, Dr. MacArthur looks at Jesus's twelve disciples. You've heard their names, but what exactly do you know about them? Well, when you get done reading this book you will feel like you know a lot!

Overall, I found this to be a fascinating and wonderfully informative read. Dr. MacArthur does an excellent job of showing how Jesus called and trained the twelve to become His apostles, and then presented all of them as individuals - individuals from whom we can learn a great deal about who God can use and how.

Yes, I must say I really enjoyed this excellent and highly informative book. If you want to really understand the twelve apostles, then you MUST get this book. I give it my highest recommendations!

Editorial Review:

Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men - fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots - and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. MacArthur draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original twelve disciples for today's modern disciple - you.

Comprehensive Manual on Holistic Discipleship 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is Bill Hull's opus! Hull, who has spent his entire life discipling disciplers, and is a life-long learner, has composed a comprehensive manual on holistic discipleship. Readers will fine a biblical theology, spiritual theology, historical theology, and practical theology of discipleship. Written in a lucid style and well-organized, this can become a classic volume to return to again and again.

This book gives a clear explaination of being a true believer which must incorporate following Jesus and continue as a Disciple.

It gives very practical instructions on how to develope the life as a Disciple and fulfilling the Great Commission by Making Disciples.

Best Book of Discipleship! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Bill Hull's book The Complete Book of Discipleship is one of the best books I have seen on the topic of discipleship. It is a thorough, well written biblical description of what it means to be a follower of Christ no matter where one is on their faith journey. It also shares the history from which discipleship comes, what it means to be a disciple and practical ways to implement it in your life or a church setting. His ability early on to merge classical discipleship, spiritual formation and environmental discipleship in such a way to convince the reader that the best possible way to find a full bodied discipleship is to involve all three was refreshing.

Editorial Review:

The Complete Book of Discipleship is the definitive A to Z resource on discipleship and disciple making for every Christian.

Reaching Into My Loneliness... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've been reading Henri Nouwen's Reaching Out over the last week or so and it's been impacting me deeply.

I feel like I have been lonely for as long as I can remember. There have been moments thick with the physical presence of friends & family. And there were times where I managed to gain enough attention or popularity to almost muffle the pangs of isolation in my gut. I used to think of those "distracted" periods as high points - when I'd achieved the connectedness I craved. I'm realizing more and more that the times of greatest singular loneliness in life were also the times where God's hand pressed heaviest on my heart.

However, until Nouwen's Reaching Out, I don't think I have encountered any voice (pastor, friend or counselor) telling me that this aching was natural, necessary & right. I'm an American Evangelical! If something doesn't feel good, it must be wrong! Reaching Out has really begun to play a connecting role in matching my awareness of God's presence in the "dark" to Nouwen's assertion that loneliness is not only obligatory, but indispensable.

Nouwen says that without "solitude of the heart," we are not even capable of loving people in the way they deserve to be loved. After reading the first three chapters I went & told my wife that I wanted to love her because she deserves my love - because she exists.

I confessed that most of my love for her is twisted & compromised of what I think I need from her, & what I want to get out of her. She said, "I think most of us love that way." I said, "But wouldn't it be incredible if we could let go of all that & love each other entirely for who the other is?" I was "lucky" enough to be unlucky in love till my twenties, so growing up I didn't have romance to hide in. Married now, I have quickly learned how to look to my wife to hide from myself, my loneliness, and God residing in the midst of that dreaded isolation.

Slowly, I'm trying to train myself to stop running from the loneliness. Inside the aching, the silence, the singular awareness of one's own disconnected (in some ways) reality, there is a voice of Truth who is whispering identity, purpose and love at the core of our being. I want to listen for that voice...

Editorial Review:

No book is better for introducing children ages 6 to 9 to legendary historical figures than this collection of stories admirably retold by James Baldwin at the beginning of the last century. Selecting the best of our literary heritage, Baldwin cast it into a form that delights children of all ages. Beginning with stories of heroes from British history, including King Alfred and the Cakes, King Canute on the Seashore, and Bruce and the Spider, the book moves on to tales of other lands. From Ancient Greece come stories of The Brave Three Hundred, Alexander and Bucepahlus, and Diogenes the Wise Man. Introducing the history of Rome are the Story of Cincinnatus, Horatius at the Bridge, and Julius Caesar. The stories of William Tell, Arnold Winkelried, and Robin Hood impart a bit of the flavor of the Middle Ages. Rounding out the collection are a number of timeless tales that show heroes in action: Damon and Pythias, The Sword of Damocles, Picciola, and The King and His Hawk. Children naturally take a deep interest in such stories. The reading of them will not only give pleasure but will help to lay the foundation for broader literary studies since nearly all are the subjects of frequent allusions in poetry and prose. Young children will enjoy having these stories read to them, while older children will delight in reading them to themselves.

This one book makes all the difference! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book taught me how to let the Lord drive my life. Right from the start it helped to redirect that "Oh! I gotta DO SOMETHING!" energy and refocused it into learning about the Lord wants me to do. It taught me about listening to the Lord, trusting in the Lord, and even about recognize some of the devil's tricks. It's an excellent book for the Christian who feels that God loves them MORE if they DO MORE THINGS. In truth, we just simply need to BE with the Lord. Don't believe me? Go read it yourself!

Editorial Review:

Now with a fresh cover! The nearly 200,000–selling Grace Walk has helped thousands of believers leave behind the “manic–depressive” Christian walk: either running around trying to perform to be acceptable to God—or thinking they’ve failed Him again and wondering if they’ll ever measure up.

Living the grace walk gets Christians off this religious roller coaster. Using his own journey from legalism into grace, Steve McVey illustrates the foundational, biblical truths of who believers are in Jesus Christ and how they can let Him live His life through them each day.

As they experience their identity in Jesus Christ, Christians will come to know “Amazing Grace” as not just a song but as their true way of life.

Inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Although Kay Warren is an Evangelical Christian and I am a Conservative Rabbi, I found her honest, personal portrait inspiring. Her tale reveals that by listening for and responding to the Divine call to meet the needs of the most vulnerable, she expanded her horizons, deepened as a person, and strengthened her relationship with God.

Brutally honest and outstanding book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Kay Warren is an extraordinary woman and should be praised for writing this shocking and enlightening book. She reveals how she became "seriously disturbed" after reading a magazine article in 2002 focusing on the AIDS pandemic. She was stunned and distressed that the article stated there were 12 million AIDS orphans in Africa. The statistics were staggering and horrific! She couldn't understand how this could be happening without her knowledge. She wondered why people weren't doing more to stop this pandemic. After much research on HIV/AIDS, she realized she couldn't sit back and ignore these people.

It took courage and self-sacrifice for this pastor's wife to leave her warm, comfortable California home to journey into the midst of the AIDS pandemic in Africa in 2003, and later to other parts of the world plagued with the AIDS pandemic. Her journey took her to areas where young children and adults were dying each day from this insidious disease. In some way, she felt she had to do something to alleviate their suffering by sharing her love with them. She witnessed the social stigma, rejection, persecution, and shame these people faced daily. It would have been easy to simply forget that this tragedy was a reality. Yet, this special woman realized that she couldn't ignore the call from God to "act up" and reach out to those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

While away from home, she discovered that she had breast cancer. Shortly after this battle, she was diagnosed with another form of cancer. This wasn't enough to stop a woman on a mission. She knew her mission in life and had said, "Yes" to God.

This is a brutally honest account of her journey into HIV/AIDS activism. As an AIDS activist myself, I felt so much admiration for Kay Warren. Her activism struck a chord within me. I know how my elderly mother felt when she was battling HIV/AIDS due to a tainted blood transfusion while undergoing heart bypass surgery in 1983. She was one of the first victims of HIV. She kept her illness a secret because she feared rejection. Many of the people Ms. Warren met felt dirty and ashamed of their illness. I know my own mother did even though she was infected through a blood transfusion. It's difficult to imagine that the stigma still exists after 25 years of the AIDS pandemic. Kay Warren teaches us we should not sit idly by while these people suffer in silence. I totally agree with her. Hopefully, others will hear her message and join the fight.

Being the wife of Pastor Rick Warren, of the Saddleback Church in California, she believes that all churches must take an active role in educating people about HIV/AIDS. What a difference this would make.

In "Dangerous Surrender," Ms. Warren teaches us lessons about love, acceptance, courage, compassion and faith. It wasn't always an easy or pleasant experience, but the desire to do the will of God surpassed any hesitancy she might have experienced. I applaud Kay Warren for her generous gift of love and acceptance to those in need of compassion and understanding. This book taught me to say "Yes" to God and not question His ways.

"Dangerous Surrender" was one of the most inspiring books I have ever read. If more people were like Kay Warren this world would be a better place. We all have a choice in life. We can sit and simply watch the pain and evil in the world or we can make a decision to ease the suffering of those in need by surrendering to God's will as Kay Warren did. I highly recommend this outstanding book.

A Burden of Silence: My Mother's Battle with AIDS

Editorial Review:

A rare book by an uncommon woman, Dangerous Surrender by Kay Warren, dares you to go deeper with God and his purposes on earth. Destined to be a classic, it will shake, challenge, and stretch you to become more than you’ve ever imagined. Your world is waiting.

The treasure 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Why claim trinkets when you can read one of the best devotionals on the market. I use it to keep my daily life in check, to remember to have the right focus and to live what I believe. This is the top of the charts for a "Christian" work. Brother A'Kempis was a great instructor and a wise disciple. So much of todays mediocre fluff is twisted by society, self centeredness and lazy Christianity where the thinking is done for those who don't see the value in meditation and self examination. Next to the Bible, this is my favorite work.

Editorial Review:

One of the best-loved books of Christianity after the Bible, The Imitation of Christ is a passionate celebration of God and His love, mercy and holiness, which has inspired conversion and stimulated religious devotion for over five hundred years. With great personal conviction, Thomas a Kempis (1380 1471) demonstrates the individual's reliance on God and on the words of Christ, and the futility of life without faith. Thomas spent some seventy years of his life in the reclusive environment of monasteries, yet in this astonishing work he demonstrates an encompassing understanding of human nature and his writing speaks to readers of every age and every nation.
