Just another Gosslin con game 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I've become quite disenchanted with the TV show and the book was no better. Kate is self serving, self absorbed, and selfish. Traits I see developing in some of their children: particularly the ill behaved, tantrum prone, poorly socialized Mady. Having cameras trained on these small children for multiple days a week isn't healthy. Jon and Kate should be ashamed. They give lip service to their Christian values along with their supposed deep commitment to their family. Those seem to be just words: their actions are to be parasites on the backs of their children. Children they couldn't have without benefit of medical science. If they were as they claim to be (ie: caring parents), why not live their lives truly putting the children's interests first? Instead rather than actually working and providing for the family they created, they use the children to support the group. (It sure isn't Kate people are tuning in for...she is nasty mean and treats Jon with amazing disrespect and disdain.) Probably bottom line: they're starting to suffer from over exposure. The small children are adorable, but the cameras and attention are beginning to show up in unhealthy behaviors in the twins. It's just a matter of time until the smaller children start to act out as well. Or worse, develop a sense of themselves that is not in line with reality. In ten years or so we'll see them on Intervention.

While I read the book, all I could hear was Kate's grating voice and I had to stop reading. I hope as co-author Beth gets something out of this. After being used for two years by the Gosslins, she has disappeared and I can't help but wonder: did she threaten Kate and have to be removed from the show so Kate wouldn't look so bad?

Bottom line: save your money for a good read...or donate the amount to charity.

Editorial Review:

Three years after giving birth to twin daughters, Kate and Jon Gosselin became pregnant again—with sextuplets. Kate’s candid and emotionally-charged book chronicles the exhausting challenges she and Jon faced from the time the babies were conceived through the first two years of their lives, and the faith it took to get through each day.

Delivered from the Exile of Irrelevance 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you are not inspired to live like Jesus over and above living like an American after reading this book, you either completely missed the point or have some serious issues with syncretism to work out.

That said, Rob Bell paints a beautiful, poetic manifesto (for all the reviewers complaining about how 'short' the book was, perhaps a healthy understanding of expectations coming in would have been worthwhile) that far surpasses even his brilliant 'Velvet Elvis'. Bell says so much in so few words, cutting through the heady theology and allowing Jesus to pierce the heart of His followers to wake up and 'get it'.

Bell's book is framed around the idea that Jesus is not only saving the world,

but saving US.

You and me.

In America.

From the kingdom of comfort.

From the pursuit of power.

From the priority of preservation.

From the empire of indifference.

From an exile of irrelevance.

If the Church is to regain her authority in the world instead of settling for the preponderance of power in political realms, then it will be necessary to follow the urgings of Jesus and the trajectory of all human experience (encapsulated and emulated in YHWH's deliverance of His people from bondage in the exodus)from enslavement to liberation, from power to authority, and from despairing comfort to sacrificial hope.

Jesus Wants to Save Christians is the perfect manifesto for that journey.

Editorial Review:

There is a church not too far from us that recently added a $25 million addition to their building.
Our local newspaper ran a front-page story not too long ago about a study revealing that one in five people in our city lives in poverty.
This is a book about those two numbers.

Editorial Review:

If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby

getting back to the basics 4 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed Shane's view on making things simple. Love each other, share with each other, love Jesus. His way of life is not easy for people to take, and hard to follow... but by making small changes, this book and its philosophy can help guide your life to a great new place!!!

Someone who hears the message of Jesus in his heart 5 out of 5 stars.

Shane hears what Jesus says clearly and is putting it to work in the world. He is challenging others to live, love, stop war, share with the poor. He is inpsired to try to build a new culture inside the old. I love it. I am with him. It is time to change the old paradigm of getting ahead, by living in competition, hoarding resources, and dropping bombs on people for whatever reason. As he says quoting Ghandi: There is enough for everyones need but not for everyones greed. Peace and jam on brother!

Read with an open mind... 5 out of 5 stars.

This is not a book written by a professor of theology or an award winning author. It is written by a regular person, like you or me, who discovered that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a "pearl of great value" and took the next step and sold everything he owned to buy it.

Aside from being a very thought-provoking book, Irresistable Revolution has special value to me because it inspired me to take a step of faith and use my professional skills on a short term mission trip. I am the first admit that I am a "crawling" Christian, but it is my opinion that the only way to truly grow spiritually is by living out your faith serving those in need.

Shane should not be praised for being an extrodinary Christian. He should just be taken as an excellent lesson in the way that we are called to live. Even if you disagree with large sections of this book (as many reviewers have), you should definately read it for its shining example of the amazing things that can be done through you if you let your life be lead by Christ.

Editorial Review:

Using unconventional examples from his own life, Shane Claiborne stirs up questions about the church and the world, and challenges readers to truly live out their Christian faith.

Editorial Review:

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "If you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be." Fans of guardian angels will greet these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on the windowsill, and be happy. Skeptics will prefer their coffee very black.

Very Disturbing 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"It ain't the parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand." -Sam Clemens, aka Mark Twain.

I entirely disagree with many of the conclusions reached in this book. I'm just not sure which ones yet.

The beginning montage was the story of my life, sort of. I picked this book up because it looked interesting.

...and then Shane and Chris challenged exactly everything I believe in, except the existence of God and His nature as a loving Father. They challenged even my identity as an American (excuse me, citizen of the United States), calling "my country" the Empire - Rome, in fact. The beast. And utterly antithetical to the Kingdom of God. I'd been listening to the Bible on CD (The Word of Promise), and a lot of what they were saying jived with what Jesus said. They challenged the way I live life.

I say this of them: Chris and Shane have taken belief in Christ in a real way, where one actually.. you know.. believes what He said... they have taken it to a very radical conclusion. Their anti-war position has not completely convinced me, but it has made me rethink my position.

Make no mistake, I want Jesus for President. I want to share this book. I'm not sure I agree with the authors' conclusion, but "J4P" rocked my very nice and cozy American world. I also recommend Crazy Love by Francis Chan. It too is quite disturbing.

Editorial Review:

Amid all the buzz of politics and elections, Jesus for President is a refreshing reminder that our ultimate hope lies not in partisan political options but in the Jesus who gave his life for us. Politics for ordinary radicals who want to love the world into the kingdom of God.

Rob Bell Shows Us More 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Througout his book, Bell reiterates the theme that ""One of the central assertions of the Christian worldview is that there is `more.' " (19) Over and over he gives us deeper and deeper ways to think about the gospel, evangelism, denominational differences, and how we live our lives on a daily basis. No matter which side of the postmodern issue you are on, you will find much food for thought. He writes in a casual, yet profound style that keeps the interest of the reader and draws that reader into a more relevant understanding of being a Christian.

An Appeal to Think 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I consider myself theologically conservative. While some reviews portrayed the book as a liberal treatise, I did not see it in this way. What I took away most from the book is the need to continuously challenge, re-think, and revisit doctrine. Bell also did a good job of putting things in context.

If you are dogmatic about your interpretation of the Bible, whether liberal or conservative, this is not a book with which you will agree. But the biggest point in the book is challenge and thinking. Bell gets this point across well.

Editorial Review:

God never changes, nor do the central truths of Christianity. But our understanding of those truths is in constant flux. Christians will always be exploring and discovering what it means to live in harmony with God and each other. Now in softcover, Velvet Elvis offers original and refreshingly personal perspectives on what Christianity is really about.

Editorial Review:

Award-winning reporter and author Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ) once again uses his investigative skills to address the primary objections to Christianity. As a former atheist, Strobel understands the rational resistance to faith. He even names the eight most convincing arguments against Christian faith:
1) If there's a loving God, why does this pain-wracked world groan under so much suffering and evil?
2) If the miracles of God contradict science, then how can any rational person believe that they're true?
3) If God is morally pure, how can he sanction the slaughter of innocent children as the Old Testament says he did?
4) If God cares about the people he created, how could he consign so many of them to an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn't believe the right things about him?
5) If Jesus is the only way to heaven, then what about the millions of people who have never heard of him?
6) If God really created the universe, why does the evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life?
7) If God is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been rife with hypocrisy and brutality throughout the ages?
8) If I'm still plagued by doubts, then is it still possible to be a Christian?
These are mighty tough questions, and Strobel fields them well. Rather than write a weighty dissertation about the merits of faith, he brings us along on his quest as we meet leaders in the Christian community, such as Peter Kreeft and William Lane Craig. We also encounter his everyday friends and acquaintances that serendipitously fill in the holes in each of the eight arguments against faith. The use of dialogue from personal interviews and a scene-by-scene active narrative makes this an easy and engaging read. However, easy does not mean breezy. This is a book of substance and merit, one that will help Christians defend their faith, especially during the hardest of times, when they have to defend their faith to themselves in moments of doubt. --Gail Hudson

Antiquated 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Should have looked more closely at the author before purchasing. Although it's a refreshing view of the beauty of sex and the spiritual connection it creates between you and God, it also has a very conservative sexual undercurrent. My sense was that the author would not consider a queer relationship as applicable to his theory and he also strongly advocates for abstinence before marriage, which is something that I think is antiquated.

Divorced Dad Loves This Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a divorced single dad, who has really spent the last few years just wondering how to put things back together. I am a strong Christian who is very active in a supportive church. This book has clarified some confusing questions I have have about starting another relationship after vowing to be with my now ex-wife untill the end of time. Rob Bell's writing has also shown me other quetions I need to ask myself, and has also shown me how great a sexual relationship can be. This book would be a great resource for any couple.

Editorial Review:

God and sex go together. You can’t separate the two, says Rob Bell, because this physical world is intimately linked to deeper spiritual realities. And so, in order to make sense of sexuality, at some point you have to talk about God. With beauty and unusual insight, Sex God explores this connection.
