Not How to but Why to do Christian fundraising 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

As someone who is a fundraiser for a Christian organization, I found this to be a refreshing look at fundraising from an explicitly Christian perspective. It doesn't focus very much on fundraising methods, but it reflects on what should be a major goal of Christian fundraising--the continued growth of the faith of a Christian organization's supporters. That is, in the methods they use, Christian fundraisers should seek to expand their givers' faith experience--that's the ultimate goal of stewardship. The book provides numerous examples of how Christian fundraisers have pursued this goal with their donors.

The authors conducted lengthy interviews with staff in several well-regarded and successful Christian organizations, including seminaries and service organizations. The insights from these people are worth the price of the book. In addition, the authors also reviewed some of the history of Christian philanthropy, including St. Paul's exhortations of the earliest Christians.

When fundraisers are easily criticized, this book gave me a real sense of inspiration about what I do.

Editorial Review:

Here for the first time is a truly spiritual way of looking at fundraising as an opportunity to nurture current and prospective donors and facilitate their growth in faith. Growing Givers' Hearts explores how development staff, executives, and board members from across the theological spectrum can make faith-building opportunities for donors their first priority; act on their confidence in God's abundance; draw from their theological tradition in their approach to fundraising; involve a vital cross-section of staff in planning; and cultivate spiritually mature leadership.

With this innovative approach, Growing Givers' Hearts empowers readers to work in spiritually grounded, deeply creative, and professionally satisfying ways. Fundraisers in any Christian organization will find extraordinary insights in this important guide.

Stewardship vs. money raising 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Malphurs presents a good argument for Christian stewardship. Unfortunately, he is of a more conservative (read fundamentalist) persuasion than I am. Quoting a blizzard of scripture qsuotes does NOT prove a point. It is like using UPPER CASE to STRESS a point. The argument's cogency depends on the strength of the arguments, not the prooftexts cited. Unfortunately he makes far more use of the latter and too few of the former. Still and all, it is a good read for the busy minister who is constantly bombarded by a church board complaining constantly (or so it seems) about lowered givings and straitened circumstances. This book clearly lays out the difference betwen mere fund-raising. Unfortunately his arguments are buttressed, far too much, in my opinion, by prooftexts rather than solid debating points. Still, for many churches, this book could be a real God-send in more ways than one.

(Rev.) Gordon M. Craig, B.A., B.D., S.T.M.

Editorial Review:

Money Matters in Church helps leaders to discover a one-stop, comprehensive model for managing finances and fundraising. It guides leaders of any size church or ministry to create a culture of giving that supports savvy, faithful, and legal financing. The authors present a biblical theology of stewardship that supports ways to develop donors and maximize contributions, enact a strategic budget and effective audit process, project income and expenses, work with banks, compensate staff, and address debt. The book's practical step-by-step approach makes finance issues understandable for leaders without a business background.

Exceptional! 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. It gives great insight into the biblical basis for giving and the fact that while salvation has already been purchased for us, how we are rewarded in heaven will be based upon how we lived, gave, and sacrificed during this life. If you have ready Money, Possessions and Eternity by the same author, then there is little new here. This is simply a small part of that bigger work.

Editorial Review:

Randy Alcorn, best-selling author of The Treasure Principle, makes a clear, compelling case for an underemphasized scriptural principle: that believers will receive differing rewards in heaven depending on their actions and choices here on earth. Taken mainly from excerpts of Money, Possessions, and Eternity, The Law of Rewards shows how our faith determines our eternal destination but our behavior determines our eternal rewards.

The Law of Rewards is published in association with Generous Giving, Inc., a ministry of The Maclellan Foundation, which offers practical tools and events designed to transform hearts and minds for revolutionary generosity.

Excellent Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I am a pastor of a congregation and we are using this as a congregational-wide discussion on the theology of stewardship. What I treasure about this book is that it starts with a good theological background before getting into nuts and bolts sorts of issues. Because Powell argues that all of life is about stewardship, this book is an excellent read for those who are tired of seeing people who only associate stewardship with church fundraising.

Editorial Review:

We all know that everything we have is a gift from God. But sometimes it’s hard to know just how to give back to God. How much is enough? What does the Bible really say? What should giving look like in our everyday lives? Filled with good news for followers of Jesus, Mark Allan Powell’s Giving to God shows Christians the way to a better life and a better relationship with their money — and with God.

Powell presents stewardship as an act of worship, an expression of faith, and a discipline for spiritual growth. Faithful use of our time, talents, and money starts with a deep, satisfying relationship with the God to whom we belong. We can then learn, says Powell, to give gladly and generously out of our heartfelt connection with God. Informative, concise, and eminently practical (including discussion questions), Giving to God gives us resources for best using the treasures, material and otherwise, that God has given us.

There are many very good ideas presented in this book and you can't help but see yourself as a better person for it.

Validating 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr Wicks lives up to his reputation as an excellent writer of books that nourish the soul. This is a must for those in ministry to others.

Editorial Review:

In the Gospels, Christ gave a mandate to his disciples to be open to others and to God. In Availability, Wicks teaches that Christian ministry on every level requires humility, self-knowledge, awareness of our own limitations, and a determination to carry on despite challenges.

Editorial Review:

Serving others is a vital part of the Christian life. Time and again Christ demonstrated the importance of putting others first and giving what we can to help those less fortunate. As adults, we recognize the importance of instilling these values in our children and youth, but simply telling them to love their neighbor isn't enough; to leave a lasting impression, they need to see and experience love in action.

77 Ways Your Family Can Make a Difference is an easy-to-use resource that parents can use to cultivate compassion in their children and engage their family in acts of service. Filled with suggestions, activities, Bible verses, and topics for discussion, this re-usable manual inspires families to look for ways to make the world a better place by making a difference in the lives of others.

Features include:
Creative activities that can be adapted to fit your unique family
Service ideas for a variety of budgets
Bible verses at the end of each activity to help children connect the practical aspects of God's truth to their lives
Interactive discussion questions to help teens understand the importance of each activity and correlate it to God's Word
Suggestions that encourage whole families--parents, kids, grandparents, and other relatives--to spend time together as they practice biblical servanthood

In addition to families, these ideas and activities can be easily adapted to use with youth groups, Sunday School classes, home school curriculums, small-groups, and church-wide community projects.

Excellent eye and soul opening book! Highly recommend you read! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent eye and soul opening book! Makes you re-think things in your life and in your church, re-evaluate your priorities, excuses, and actions. Re-grounds you in prayer and re-centers your focus. An excellent easy read, easy to get concepts that are potentially soul shaping and infectious :)

Treasures really are a treasure 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this myself to prepare for my church's stewardship campaign. I read the book in a week and can't wait for the rest of my congregation to share its wisdom. Illustrations are varied and spread through the chapters. The week on being present at church is the best. Why should football games rate more attendence than weekly church services? Large print and graphics will make the 40 days go fast.

every pastor and church leader - please read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

i bought this book b/c the church where my husband is a minister built nearly 3 years ago and now the church is so in debt my husband and the other associate minister are about to lose their job so they can pay the mortgage. what a wealth of wisdom is in this book! and a quick read, too. if every church going through growing pains read this book, i believe the face of american churches would be completely different. what i especially love is the common sense advice for how to reorganize ministries to use space better, take the burden off the volunteers, etc.

and you can't argue with the man. the Bible nowhere EVER advocates debt as a good thing, much less a whole body of believers going into debt for something material like a building. i love his chapter on turning church spending upside down, and imagining what a church could do in and for the community with the money they would have spent on an unnecessary building.

a lot of practical, biblical, common sense advice. highly recommend it!

Editorial Review:

When Not to Build has helped numerous churches find wise and creative solutions to their space problems. The first edition garnered a Recommended Resource Award from Your Church magazine and won favorable reviews:

Now this expanded edition takes into account the changing shape of the contemporary church with four new chapters, a new appendix, an added preface, and updated information throughout.

In the authors' experience, nine out of ten churches that consider building have a better alternative. When Not to Build helps pastors, church leaders, building committees, and laypeople find those alternatives and avoid unnecessary expense. It also offers practical advice for keeping building costs at a minimum when it is the right time to build, as well as maintaining focus on ministry through a building program. Self-tests are included at the end of each chapter.
