Freedom 5 out of 5 stars.

This is by far the best book that I have read on the subject and I have read a few. The authors examine the doctrine from just about every possible angle. Very tastefully done. I highly recommend this book.

Good News 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I believe that the authors did a great job. A majority of the people will never believe that this is a very scripture based book. I could not stop reading this book and it sheds so much light on tithing. I will say that in the last chapters, everything that was mentioned about pastors was true. I have had a pastor say that it would be hard for him to put in his tithe that Sunday, because of low funds, well this book points out the fact that you shouldn't give grudgingly. Final words, magnificent and hope to see more of your writing. God Bless

A Must Read by those wanting to know truth 3 out of 5 stars.

This book was very informative and well written. It should be read by every one who wants to know the truth about tithing and giving.

BEYOND TITHES AND OFFERINGS 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 24 people found this review helpful.

These two men were armed to the teeth when it came to knowlege of different sacrifices etc. They even had a good handle on the unscriptural tithing part. My problem with the book came with the compromise that the authors made by implying that even though tithing is unscriptural we should give money to these local reprobate goat factories (churches) anyway.

One Minute Stewardship Sermons 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Having just been appointed Chairman of our Stewardship Committe I wanted to find a good resource that would allow me to make the greatest impact. I think this book will certainly put me on that road to seeking to glorify God through the stewardship of our time, talents and money. I wanted to approach my stewardship program by having our parish members giving the sermons rather than the rector. This will help me concentrate my efforts in that direction.

Useful sermonettes 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book has many useful "sermonettes" that are tied to scripture and to the church calendar. It strongly endorses the importance of the priest discussing stewardship frequently and in many different ways.

Editorial Review:

Short, concise, inspirational meditations that can be used to explore the many aspects of stewardship throughout the year. Includes tips from a dozen contributors representing several denominations and congregations of all sizes.

Using Your Money Wisely 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

A not-so-well-written book with lots of sound, practical advice about managing and using money wisely. Also gives advice about prioritizing one's life to secure contentment. Aimed at Christians interested in following biblical standards for living, including money management.

Use Your Money Wisely And Don't Buy This Book 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The back jacket of this book notes that it is "a series of outstanding articles taken from [the author's] newsletters." Leaving aside the issue of whether the individual articles are outstanding (the quality is uneven), the book suffers from a lack of continuity. Worse, it lacks a unifying vision. Saying that one is presenting a Christian Biblical point of view about finances isn't enough. The ideas are all over the place and do not develop from chapter to chapter. The book as a consequence gives the impression of being unfinished.

This is unfortunate. Although there are other, equally Christian, views of finances that do not rest on the author's premises (women are to be submissive financially, e.g.), he had some things to say that made me think, though I ultimately disagreed with many of his conclusions (this is _not_ the reason for the low rating).

For a much deeper look at the wise use of money, I recommend the classic _Your Money or Your Life_ by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robins. It does not have a specifically Christian orientation but it certainly cannot be said to be anti-Christian.

Editorial Review:

Concise articles cover virtually every aspect of finances. (More than 100,000 in print)

God and Finances 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Derek made this plain and simple. It is not God's desire to see those who love Him poor. God conscious people are always rich in spirit and THROUGH that spirit the physical manifestations come.

I purhcased multiple copies to put them into the hands of others that they may find some of the same value i found...

this work is appreciated....

Burkett's Best 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

True, Mr. Burkett says a lot of the same things in this book that he said in his other books but there were a few differences in this book. I was most impressed with what he had to say about the church's role in charitable giving. Prior to reading this book I was unclear of that role. I am of the opinion that every Christian needs to come to terms with finances and material possessions and Mr. Burkett, God bless his soul, provided the best explanations that I have come in contact with. Let me sum it up this way: if you are consumed and caught up in the rat race this book will show you a way out. Powerful stuff.

Editorial Review:

This book is a perfect introduction to basic financial management. It is a complete money guide, offering practical suggestions for building a sound financial program in the context of a Christian value system.

Editorial Review:

This book is essential reading for understanding the legacy behind the Catholic Worker Movement.

The founders of the movement, Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin met during the Great Depression in 1932. Their collaboration sparked something in the Church that has been both an inspiration and a reproach to American Catholicism.

Dorothy Day is already a cultural icon. Once maligned, she is now being considered for sainthood. From a bohemian circle that included Eugene O’Neil to her controversial labor politics to the founding of the Catholic Worker Movement, she lived out a civil rights pacifism with a spirituality that took radical message of the Gospel to heart.

Peter Maurin has been less celebrated but was equally important to the movement that embraced and uplifted the poor among us. Dorothy Day said he was, "a genius, a saint, an agitator, a writer, a lecturer, a poor man and a shabby tramp."

Mark and Louise Zwick’s thorough research into the Catholic Worker Movement reveals who influenced Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day and how the influence materialized into much more than good ideas. Dostoevsky, Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, Francis of Assisi, Therese of Lisieux, Jacques and Raissa Maritain and many others contributed to fire in the minds of two people that sought to "blow the dynamite of the Church" in 20th-century America.

This fascinating and detailed work will be meaningful to readers interested in American history, social justice, religion and public life. It will also appeal to Catholics wishing to live the Gospel with lives of action, contemplation, and prayer.

... because He paid it forward ! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This little 109 pages inspirational book is a very captivating page-turner. As a Christian you will not read it without being changed or having your paradigm on money and possesions changed. As a non-Christian you will understand the rich meaning of the "Parable of the Talents" (book of Matthew chapter 25 verses 14-30) and what, at the practical level, Christianity is all about and what it means to work for the Kingdom of God.

The closest analogy that I can think of is that this book is the Christian counterpart of the movie "Pay It Forward." Actually the idea behind the "Kingdom Assignment" that pastors Denny and Leesa Bellesi felt compelled to follow, was God's brainchild idea for the church that they served in. The Bellesis were inspired while watching the famed movie in a theatre, and then prayed about the seed that God had planted in their hearts.

The book not only tells the story of that seedy "Kingdom Assignment," but also discusses what Jesus taught about money and possesions. As a result of prayerful consideration, at the beginning of October in 2000, the church handed out $100 dollar bills to 100 people (a mix of volunteers and volunteered members). Then the pastor told them what their assignment is with their individual $100 bills:
1) the money does not belong to you, but it's God's money.
2) one has to use the money to further or to benefit God's Kingdom,
3) in three months all 100 of them were to come back and tell the church how they had put the $100 in God's service.

I will not spoil the results for you, but I will mention that this real event and the aftermath has been covered by Dateline, People magazine, and the Associated Press from which many national newspapers carried the story.

You will be inspired to always help your neighbor, in good and bad, and to think of material possesions and non-material talents as something to use, manage, and be a stewart of for God's Kingdom and the well-being of fellow mankind.

Editorial Review:

The parable of the talents says that if I take what I have, and give it to God, unlimited things can happen for others. Is this true and does it work today are questions that are being answered in southern California at the Coast Hills Community Church in a nationally recognized way as they give $100 bills to their church members and send them out to do good.
