Christians seeking truth about finances 5 out of 5 stars.

I haven't finished the book as I just received it yesterday but I have read the first 200 of 350 pages. I believe this book should be read by every christian who is seeking wisdom concerning their finances. The book is an easy read and will really open your eyes to what our world has become and how some of us could very easily get sucked into The Endtime Money Snare the author refers to. Buy the book and read it, it will be worth your time and effort.

Editorial Review:

Massive conversions have already taken place, claiming upwards of four billion converts...among them many Christians.

It is a massive global boom in a materialistic-based faith called Mammonism, which is leading the world into an endtime trap--a global money snare.

What form will this trap take? How can its grip be avoided? Can Christians prosper in the Lord's grace and live free of any complicity in this endtime agenda?

This book answers these tough questions, dealing with the hooks and dangers of living during a time when the enemy is setting a deadly snare for the last-day world.

A very thoughtful reflection on faith and economics 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There is considerable debate in the public square these days about a number of issues that have significant economic components. Globalization, environmental protection, and aiding the poor are just a few. Decisions we make in our personal lives are influenced by our assumptions about economic realities as well. So how might mainstream economics connect with Christian Values and principles?

Victor Claar and Robin Klay, both professors of economics at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, address these topics in the book. It's a wonderful read. The book has eleven chapters, each devoted to a particular issue like the role of government, creation care, discerning vocation and caring for the poor versus worrying about the income gap.

The writing style is engaging. If you have a just a rudimentary grasp of some basic economic concepts the book should be intelligible. If not, you may find yourself having to work some in a couple of spots. But what is truly refreshing is the careful and respectful manner in which differing views are presented on some controversial topics even as the authors reveal their takes on issues. The book is neither a social justice harangue nor a libertarian manifesto, just solid Christian reflection on the implications of mainstream economic thought.

The authors conclude the book with "Nine Big Ideas from Economics That Can Help You Be a Good Steward Every Day."

1. For everything you do, there is something you are choosing to leave undone.
2. The anticipated social benefit of any policy proposal must be seriously weighed against every likely social opportunity cost.
3. Actions speak louder than words.
4. Markets move precious resource from less-valuable to more-valuable.
5. Job creation is rightly viewed as a cost, not a benefit, of any initiative.
6. Free international trade is a proven way to help the world's poorest people.
7. Hope for a better future may require temporary discomfort today.
8. Corrupt governments keep the poor down.
9. Sunk costs are sunk.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a thoughtful reflection on the interaction between faith and economics!

Ecology, Theology, Community 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In Daniel Deffenbaugh's book, he combines these three elements -- ecology, theology, and community -- with ease. As he narrates his own journey from an early life full of doses of "Walt Disney and suburbanism" to living on a farm in East Tennessee, Deffenbaugh maintains a strong theological argument (28). He draws on historic theology, but he mixes it in with his own experiences of hard-scrabble sustainability and quiet worship in the fields.

He writes about his gardening experience of "holy listening." And he lays forth a "theology of place." Deffenbaugh makes a faith-and-health case without ever really talking about faith and health. For him, ecology and theology are as interwoven as our bodies and spirits. I recommend this book if you are looking to make sense of our natural world and God. Deffenbaugh provides a road map for developing one's own theology around these issues.

Editorial Review:

Deffenbaugh calls us to live in a reciprocal relationship with our biotic communities-the plants, animals, and other non-human cultures that share our world. By rerooting our global lifestyles in the ecological knowledge of our homes, we may truly begin to mend the health of our planet. Deffenbaugh marries Christian theology and spiritual disciplines with Native American mythology and organic gardening to deepen our engagement with the places in which we live.

Editorial Review:

MAKING MONEY MAKE SENSE.

Money is the number one cause of stress in many families, and one of Jesus' most discussed topics. But within the church, talking about money is usually reserved for sermons on the importance of giving.

This eight-session PILGRIMAGE study guide examines money and the numerous issues that relate to it. It gives your group members a forum to honestly discuss your underlying attitudes about money and to learn how to serve God effectively in this potentially rewarding area of life.

The Pilgrimage Series. The life of following Christ was never meant to be solitary. The early Christians pursued it in groups not much larger than your small group, meeting in homes for the first two hundred years of the movement. So whether you've joined a small group to know a few people well, to learning a more concentrated setting, or to focus your collective gifts toward a specific end, you are following a time-tested format for spiritual growth.

The PILGRIMAGE SERIES is designed to foster spiritual growth in a group setting. By incorporating relationship-building material into each session, PILGRIMAGE guides will help your group translate learning into practice.

Editorial Review:

Making Change presents the essential basics of money management for Christians and then casts a greater added vision to the church and individuals of how our God-given financial resources can change lives for the sake of His kingdom.

Author Ken Hemphill begins by helping readers discover the blessing of contentment rather than the gnawing curse of greed and shares helpful instructions on debt reduction, earning, saving, and spending. He also addresses the biblical laws of giving and teaches an inspiring concept of "whole-life stewardship" that can lead to a person’s legacy. And that’s worth more than anything money could ever buy.

Should your son be a priest? 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 22 people found this review helpful.

As you might expect from such a great person, the Pope's book provides few insights into the Pope himself. He does show how our own lives can influence others, especially in a cumulative way, as the he tells of all of those who influenced his entering the priesthood. He cites the religiosity of his father; the holiness of Jan Tyranowski; the writings of St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Louis Marie de Montfort; the devotions in his parish, to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and of the brown scapular. The reader can't help but wonder if there is a link between the lack of devotions today and the lack of vocations today.

A priest's life is challenging. He must be attentive and sympathetic; critical and watchful with regard to historical developments; a giver of Christ; a spiritual father -- especially in the Confessional; holy; constantly training, studying and updating; promoting the family; defending mankind; in dialog with the youth; in dialog with the culture; intellectual and scholarly; and living the Gospel.

But a priest's life is most rewarding. The priest is "a steward of the mysteries of God." An essential part of his mission is fulfilled in the Confessional. The priest is an essential being in the only suitable offering that man can make to God, the offering of God-made-man, an offering made at every Mass. The priest is so united to Christ at Mass that he is "in the person of Christ." What a beautiful reflection on the Mass is offered by the Pope!

The challenge of the priesthood seems overwhelming. It would be without God. It is "a mystery of divine election."

Every parent of a potential priest should read this book.

Editorial Review:

Pope John Paul II's newest work, both personal and spiritually accessible to all, was written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. 16-page line drawing insert.

Editorial Review:

Five years ago Dr. J. Matthew Sleeth and his family lived in a big house, had two luxury cars, loads of money, and lots of stuff. As chief of the medical staff at a large hospital, Sleeth was living the American dream—until he realized that something was terribly wrong. As he saw patient after patient suffering from cancer, asthma, and other chronic diseases, he began to understand that the Earth and its inhabitants were in trouble. Feeling helpless, he turned to his faith for guidance. He discovered how the timeless lessons of personal responsibility, simplicity, and stewardship taught in the Bible could be applied to modern life.

The Sleeths have since sold their big home and given away more than half of what they once owned. In Serve God, Save the Planet, Sleeth shares the joy of adopting a less materialistic lifestyle, and reveals what was easy and what was hard about the changes his family has made.

Drawing on science and religion, Sleeth builds a bridge between environmentalists and mainstream Christians. He and his family are harbingers of the creation care movement, which calls on all those who love God to love our planet. Sleeth shares how material downscaling led his family to healthier lifestyles, stronger relationships, and richer spiritual lives. Serve God, Save the Planet is more than a book: it is a prescription for taking personal responsibility for global surviva

God is smarter than this 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for help teaching this subject to middle schoolers in a Christian school. I find the discussion questions far to broad to prompt actual discussion in the older end of this spectrum and too deep for children in the younger part. From Chapter 12 "Do you think Moses will be happy in heaven becasue he made this decision? Why? (yes, Moses will be happy because he did what God wanted him to do. He will be able to enjoy the Lord forever in heaven." Yikes, I can hear the crickets already.
Not enough practical like balancing a checkbook, how credit cards work etc. and way too many softball discussion questions.

Great for getting started 4 out of 5 stars.

The book gets kids thinking about how to save. It gets them thinking about others needs before their own. The artwork is fantastic. It's good for short lessons like 45 minute Sunday school.

Editorial Review:

This 12-week curriculum is fashioned much the same as The ABCís of Handling Money Godís Way, but is designed for children ages 8-12. Includes Scripture memorization, more in-depth questions, and activities to apply what each chapter has taught.
