This extraordinary collection of poems touches me deeply. I keep it near me every day. As I enter the Advent season each year, Ms. Weems' wonderful "In search of our kneeling places" helps me keep room in my inn. I absolutely love the book. Thank you, thank you Ann Weems.

I am a minister and have used this book for church service readings during Christmas. It's a terrific resource (try also Ann's book "Reaching for Rainbows.") I've planned an entire Christmas eve service combining poems from this book along with the bible Christmas story and favorite carols.

Anne Weems poetry is full of spirituality! She has the talent to bring a fresh view of the season of Advent and Christmas. Her poetry can be homorous, daunting, filled with the Holy Spirit and much more. A wonderful resource for the worship experience during Advent.

This beautifully crafted edition offers the first, largest, and most complete collection ever of Helen Steiner Rice poems. From her remarkable body of work, this volume includes nearly four hundred original poems--sixteen of them rare and previously uncollected--and one never-before-published prayer discovered in the Helen Steiner Rice Foundation archives. Included are favorites like "The Praying Hands," "Heart Gifts," and "Tribute to John F. Kennedy." Organized topically into sixteen parts, this collection features the subjects Helen returned to again and again in her life--from musings on heaven and the beauty in nature to odes of love for friends and family. It's a definitive volume packed with heart and hope for generations to come.

Worth its weight in gold 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this Penguin Classics edition of Chaucer last year during a visit to Canterbury. I already owned the modernized edition edited by the late Nevill Coghill, but I figured: Hey, I'm in Canterbury--I have to buy a copy. So I bought this one.
For starters, this is the complete text of the Tales, and it is in the original Middle English. While the language may take a while to get used to (for beginners, especially) it's a blast to read. Another plus for this edition is the heavy, heavy glossing and a really extensive notes section which helped even an experienced reader of Chaucer like myself.
If you're new to Chaucer, or even if you're not, this is the edition to have. It's a paperback, so it's portable, and it's complete. You won't be left wanting an odd tale or two with this book.
Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

One of the greatest and most ambitious works in English literature, The Canterbury Tales depicts a storytelling competition between pilgrims drawn from all ranks of society.

The tales are as various as the pilgrims themselves, encompassing comedy, pathos, tragedy, and cynicism. The Miller and the Reeve express their mutual antagonism in a pair of comic stories combining sex and trickery; in "The Shipman’s Tale," a wife sells her favors to a monk. Others draw on courtly romance and fantasy: the Knight tells of rivals competing for the love of the same woman, and the Squire describes a princess who can speak to birds. In these twenty-four tales, Chaucer displays a dazzling range of literary styles and conjures up a wonderfully vivid picture of medieval life.

Helpful for the Busy Pastor who Shouldn't Be 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

The Contemplative Pastor - the first book I have read by Eugene Peterson - is a helpful study not in sermon preparation or church growth strategies or qualifications for eldership (the kind of stuff I usually read), but on the pastor's heart and the pastoral art.

Peterson describes the term "pastor" with three unusual adjectives: un-busy, subversive, and apocalyptic (a chapter is devoted to each term), and then charts a course for shepherding people in the mundane.

Peterson's poetry is sprinkled through the book, concluding with numerous poems at the end. Unfortunately, his poetry is not all that good. To me, it just seemed like the throwing together of pretty words without much rhyme or reason.

But there are some jewels to be mined here - especially Peterson's job description for the un-busy pastor who devotes his time to prayer, bringing messages from God, and listening to his people, his meditation on "the middle voice" in relation to prayer, and his chapter "The Ministry of Small Talk."

Editorial Review:

Pastor-teacher Eugene Peterson has written a book of wisdom and refreshment for busy pastors illustrated with engaging personal anecdotes and including poetic reflections on the Beatitudes and discussions of such themes as curing souls, the language of prayer, the ministry of small talk, and sabbatical.

"Must" reading for all Joyce Rupp fans! 5 out of 5 stars.
49 of 49 people found this review helpful.

Out Of The Ordinary features more than 125 thoughtful compositions drawn from author Joyce Rupp's treasure trove of unpublished work. Herein contained are attentive prayer resources for a wide spectrum of needs and times, including resources for groups, individuals, prayer rituals, guided visualizations, reflections, and poems -- suitably for open or closed meetings, prayer sessions, and days of recollection. When used within the context of worship and small group prayer, they can be duplicated without cost or written permission. Out Of The Ordinary is further enhanced for students of spirituality with a collection of prayerful, Taize-like chants that Rupp composed to accompany the many rituals outlined in her book. The musical notation of these chants is contained in the Appendix, and are also available on CD or cassette.

A contagious passion for worship 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"The natural object is always the adequate symbol." Joyce Rupp embodies Ezra Pound's famous quote by using diverse images as springboards for spiritual transformation; in elevating the ordinary, she reveals an extraordinary God.

These meditations and seasonal reflections include prayers of all kinds: from call and response to blessings to holy day invocations. Drawn from her years as a spiritual director and retreat leader, her work gives voice to our common losses and aspirations, our longings and celebrations. Forthright poems emulate traditional religious poetry, and her prose is direct, insightful, and heartfelt.

This is one generous soul. "Use the rituals and prayers as seeds or as whole plants," she writes. "Either way is fine with me." She requests that her poems be preserved intact but graciously offers the other materials in her book -- including the music -- for adaptation for personal or liturgical use. The user need only include the appropriate acknowledgement, as explained in her introduction.

Apologize For Nothing; Explain Everything 4 out of 5 stars.
22 of 25 people found this review helpful.

"Apologia Pro Vita Sua" is John Henry Cardinal Newman's explanation of his religious views and actions from 1833 to the time of his writing in 1864. In order to understand this work, it must be understood that "Apologia" is translated more precisely as an explanation, rather than as an apology. Newman apologizes for nothing. He explains everything.

John Henry Cardinal Newman was a major British religious figure of the Nineteenth Century. A prominent Anglican priest, leader of the Oxford Movement and proponent of the "Via Media", Newman's conversion to Catholicism created many hard feelings among his Anglican friends.

This book was written as an answer to specific charges brought against him by particular people at various times. Much of the book involves references to actions and words of those with whom he collaborated, corresponded or met. At times it is difficult to maintain interest in charge-counter charges which make up much of the book. Although some of the charge-counter charges seem of little import today, I cannot say that the book ever becomes boring.

In some sections, particularly in his footnotes, Newman explains theological issues, although that is not the main thrust of the work.

This book gave me a deeper understanding of Newman individually and of the religious environment in England during his time than I had had previously. This book reveals the Anglican Church as a "Big Tent", so to speak, including a "High Church" which valued hierarchy and formal liturgy and a "Low Church" which more resembled the Methodist and other Protestant churches.

Newman viewed the Anglican Church as a branch of Catholicism in England. He was troubled by various steps taken by the Anglican Church, particularly the establishment of a Bishop in Jerusalem. Newman's position was that there were virtually no Anglicans in Jerusalem and that the plan for the bishop to have authority over Protestants, a group with which Newman did not identify, was unjustified. If the Anglican Church was a branch of the Catholic Church in England, what business did it have establishing a bishop in Jerusalem, a non-British territory, as a cooperative venture with German Protestants? He regarded this attempt to use the Anglican Church to promote British prestige and national interests as another unjustified interference of politics in ecclesiastical matters.

I had always thought that Newman's conversion and rise in the Catholic hierarchy were unusual. In this book I learned that Newman was one of several Anglican clergymen who converted to Catholicism around his time, including another who became a Cardinal. The Catholic hierarchy was restored in England during Newman's day so his rapid rise may not have been as surprising as it would have been under more stable circumstances.

One might think that Newman's conversion from the Church of England to the Church of Rome and his subsequent treatment by some Englishmen may have dampened his patriotic enthusiasm. Nothing could be further from the truth. Newman's status as a proud Englishman remains obvious throughout this book.

In summation, this book is readable, interesting and gives the reader a taste of history and theology. I recommend it for anyone interested in Newman in particular and the history of the Church in general.

Editorial Review:

Once a well-known Anglican clergyman, Newman left his living in the 1840's, recanted his former criticism of the Roman Catholic Church and entered the priesthood. Framing his Apologia in reply to a grave and gratuitous slander made by Charles Kingsley, Newman produced one of the masterpieces of spiritual writing: honest, passionate, scrupulous and moving, this work is also a highly accomplished prose paradigm.

Dementia are Appropriate 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The dementia of this book are entirely appropriate. One minor criticism: Ms. Shannon neglected to include an excerpt from the works of the often-overlooked Irish pugilist-poet Fighty McDrunkahan. His cycle of travellers' poems -- "Jaysus, What's This in Me Shoe?" -- is a classic of vernacular Irish literature.

DECEPTIVE 2 out of 5 stars.

This book appears to be a normal size book in its add on the web but is infact only 2 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches long.
Nowhere do they tell you that. I was ordering for adults not children.
Thank You for your time.

Footprints to Follow Proudly 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Rich, simple and startlingly clear & deep, the poetry of Ruth Bell Graham speaks a heart language that lends itself alike to silent contemplation or verbal reading.

This is far more than an attractive coffee-table book. It is a treasure of rich verse, beautiful language, deep insight and breathtaking honesty.

An ideal gift for yourself or that special someone, this is a book that will continue to give every time it is opened. It also poses the risk of making poetry lovers from those who think all poetry is stilted and obscure.

Editorial Review:

Footprints Of A Pilgrim is Ruth Bell Graham's life story told in her own words (weaving together her prose and poetry) with added tidbits and anecdotes from her family (husband Billy and her children Gigi, Anne, Franklin, Ruth and Ned) and many of her friends (including Barbara Bush, Lady Bird Johnson, Jan Karon, Patricia Cornwell and others). With snatches of insight and glimpses of grace, Footprints Of A Pilgrim tells the story of a life (a very full and special life) complete with memories of joy, pain, brokenness, and healing. Also included are many never before published pictures which illustrate the remarkable journey of Ruth Bell Graham, as a child of a missionaries in Quingjiang, China in 1920, until today at her home in Little Piney Cove, Montreat, North Carolina.

A glimpse into a deep love of her Savior 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

In a stunning gift book format, one of America's best-loved authors offers a glimpse into a deep love of her Savior. Anne Graham Lotz has filled her work with original poetry, stories, and breathtaking insight into the life of Christ. To those in need of encouragement, this book offers a concise message of hope.

The rich blue color of the cover is carried through the pages of the book with photographs and drawings of Celtic crosses. Every page is a work of art, accompanied by the unique writing that sets Lotz above the rest. The price of the book also includes a CD in the back, which allows readers to listen to the author's voice, as well as enjoy Fernando Ortega's inspiring song, Give Me Jesus.

What I like about this book is that it's also useful for people involved in any type of ministry. The quotes, Scriptures, and prose all tie into the theme of loving Jesus, and those who need a fresh dose of inspiration will find much to glean from this work. Group leaders could allow their classes to listen to the CD as a springboard for discussion.

Though this small gift version doesn't offer as much depth as Anne's longer Just Give Me Jesus, this format is immensely readable and useful for gift giving. Drinking deep from the well of Scripture, this best-selling book is sure to captivate readers of all ages. - Heather Ivester, Christian Book Previews.com

Editorial Review:

My Jesus is . . . Everything speaks to the heart of every person facing the problems of life, which we all encounter. This encouraging book and CD highlight the poetry and prose that brings to light the sacrifice, glory and the importance of Jesus Christ. When Anne Graham Lotz says the words "Just give me Jesus," she is sharing from her heart and wants in all our lives for Jesus to truly be our everything. The CD enclosed in the book features poetry and prose spoken by the author. It is accompanied by "Give Me Jesus" as performed by Fernando Ortega.
