Hit Home and Made Me Smile... 5 out of 5 stars.
57 of 59 people found this review helpful.

I read the book several years back. I loaned it to a friend, and took a Job Transfer shortly thereafter.
Well, needless to say, I think the friend liked the book also.
So, today I am ordering it for my 2 daughters. They are approaching their 40's, and I know they will love it as much as I did.
The Author does an excellent job in depicting that which makes us smile at ourselves, as we grow older. She lets you know that growing old can be a lot of fun.
",,,I shall wear purple", is a very appropriate title. And, when a Woman nears that special time , OLD AGE, wearing purple is almost an unwritten rule.
The Author tells that in Old Age, you can get more respect. If for no other reason, than just being your Old Self.
I highly recommend reading at least twice. You'll never feel the same about yourself.
The picture on the cover and the poem that goes along with it,are alone worth the price of the Book.

Editorial Review:

Voted Britain's best-loved poem by viewers of BBC TV's Bookworm, this perennial favorite with its declaration of defiance against convention appeals to all those with a secret desire to throw off the strictures of propriety and set out deliberately to shock and be outrageous. It sums up this wish perfectly with its pronouncement: 'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple/With a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me/I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired/And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells." Reprinted here as a gift book with line drawings by Pythia Ashton-Jewell, this edition of the classic is ideal both for those who know and love the poem and for those who have yet to relish its gleeful anticipation.

Editorial Review:

Brother Lawrence (1614 to 1691) was a monk who today is most commonly remembered for the closeness of his relationship with God, as recorded in this little book. He spent almost all of his adult life in solitude, poverty, and obscurity within the walls of a priory. He was known for profound peace and high commitment to Jesus Christ. He cared not for the worldly status of his tasks, but the motivation behind it. "We can do little things for God," he wrote. "I turn the cake that is frying on the pan for love of him, and that done, if there is nothing else to call me, I prostrate myself in worship before him, who has given me grace to work; afterwards I rise happier than a king. It is enough for me to pick up but a straw from the ground for the love of God." Generations after his death, this book has become one of the most popular Christian books in history. It was oft quoted by John Wesley and A.W. Tozer, and today tens of millions of copies are in circulation. This edition is available on-demand and is printed in its original translated format. Xulon Press is the country's leading on-demand publisher of Christian books, with more than one million copies in print. Visit www.XulonPress.com.

Gratitude 5 out of 5 stars.

Marilyn Sewell's work on "Cries of the Spirit" was more than worth the price and I have wanted to thank her over and over. A death in the family and I grab her book to find the right words, a marriage and there she is again, providing a womans point of view from a variety of woman that I have found extremely useful. No matter the occassion, a new baby in the family for instance, and flip of the pages and Marilyn found one more woman who said what I want to say beautifully. Not to mention the times I sit alone, staring at the bay and use the poetry for inspiration for myself. "Cries of the Spirit" (and laughter I might add) is a worth while find!

Editorial Review:

Edited by best-selling author Marilyn Sewell, this rich and diverse anthology of more than 300 poems celebrates the sacredness of women's lives: the experiences that shape them, the relationships that sustain them, and the legacy that they build. In these poems, woman grow old, defy conventions and limits, fall in love and out again, wonder at their own bodies, and sing of the earth and sky. They pray, give birth, and make sense of suffering. As Sewell explains, "Those who write these verses do so out of exquisite courage...... They show us how to live."

Yes, it is a slim volume of poetry. And yes, poetry is not usually at the top-of-the-charts in popularity. But this was no ordinary poet. This was Our Great Holy Father, John Paul II. And while some said he could have done more for the faithful, in my opinion he did everything possible - if you truly believe in God's will. And most respectfully, this was (again, in my opinion only) John Paul II's only way of conveying the dire times in which we live and prophesying as well via the poetry genre - always subject to differing interpretations. One can feel his heart on every single word of each poem. Thank goodness we live in a country that offers us the most precious Freedom of Speech & Press - so that all we need do is "click" and purchase such a treasure for a song.

Editorial Review:

In this collection, Pope John Paul II contemplates the great questions of our lives-the mystery of creation, the invisibility of beginnings, the end of existence, and eternity that follows.

what little boys are made of:loving who they are & who..... 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book, which is full of sweet and humorous short paragraphs about little boys. The darling illustrations actually had me mildly yearning for a 'little blue bundle' despite the fact I have (and thoroughly enjoy) little girls. This would be a perfect new baby gift.

A Book for the Little Guys from Seven to Seventy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While many of the captions and poems are sometimes a bit banal to an adult, they were fresh and new for a child. The little boys (and girls) in my life really enjoyed them and the book is a great read for little kids. They and I particularly love the artwork, which is superb.

From Tyme to Time. 5 out of 5 stars.

Every now and again something wonderfull comes into our lives.
For this grandfather, at first, it was my own three boys. Then it was my four grandsons. And now it is this grand book that helps me relive thoes God given moments.

Editorial Review:

Mischief dons blue jeans and totes a fishing pole in Jim Daly’s Americana artwork featured throughout this unforgettable exploration of boyhood. Sweet writings express virtues gathered like treasures along a boy’s journey to becoming a man in this gift for sons, fathers, and anyone in love with a boy, little or big, who dreams of lazy days with bullfrogs and buddies.

Wow. An absolute masterpiece.... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I honestly do not know exactly what to say about this novel, other than thank God I managed to stumble upon it one day in my grandfather's collection.

I just finished it several minutes ago and it was one of the most fascinating, thought provoking, and mesmorizing books I have ever read. The manic main character is easily one of my favorite characters found in any book or movie (or in real life). His rambling yet calculated monologues never cease to amaze me in what direction they end up taking the reader and the audience in the book. His inner monologues are so intense in their portrayel of a very highly intelligent human mind alternating between exuberance and utter despair. Frankly, I am in awe that anyone could write a novel like this without having gone over the edge from genius to madness and back again.

I must admit many of the books "mysteries" remain very much unclear to me, though obviously the ending (the last page) hit me like a smack in the face---I thought better of the particular character of whom much is revealed. I, after the novel sinks in a little bit, plan on rereading it and trying to decipher more out of it. There is much in the book that I thought was just stream of consciousness that turns out to mean a lot more than random thoughts.

The lack of a plot, or a plot in the traditional sense, allows this novel to take you where it does. Hunger is good, but this is far better in my amatuerish opinion.

Beware, this is not a book for some light reading. Very few of my friends would like this book, unfortunately, as they would rather watch sportscenter reruns or read dime a dozen books like the Da Vinci code....

Once again I am brought back to Hamsun....I cannot wait to read those of his works that I have yet to see. His work is completely different than any others I have read.

If only I can go back and read this book for the first time again. But I am confidant I will end up reading it numerous times before my days are done.

Editorial Review:

Mysteries (1892) is the story of Johan Nilsen Nagel, a mysterious stranger who suddenly turns up in a small Norwegian town one summer-and just as suddenly disappears. Nagel is a complete outsider, a sort of modern Christ treated in a spirit of near parody. He condemns the politics and thought of the age, brings comfort to the insulted and injured and gains the love of two women suggestive of the biblical Mary and Martha. But there is a sinister side of him: in his vest he carries a vial of Prussic acid. The novel creates a powerful sense of Nagel's stream of thought, as he increasingly withdraws into the torture chamber of his own subconscious psyche.

This is an awesome book. Answers some basic question of how God can allow the horrible things to happen here on Earth. How to forgive those who have hurt you. A must read.

Excellent Spiritual Insight 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

What a legacy this woman of God left before she went home to heaven. Her life was a life of the right priorities. This anointed book will draw many people closer to God as they read the insight she shares. Reading about the testimonies of others who have overcome encourages you in your walk with the Lord Jesus.

Another theme from Holy Scripture that she emphasizes throughout the book is love, i.e., love for God and for other people. In fact, love for God will cause these other matters to fall into place appropriately. The motivation, desire, and focus will naturally flow out of a heart that loves God.

Editorial Review:

Beyond Our Selves is Catherine Marshall's uplifting and intensely personal account of her own spiritual adventure--an unforgettable journey of discovery that strengthened her faith, her understanding, and her relationship with God.

Inspiration for all 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book/cd is an excellent source of inspiration whether you are a Christian or not. Bradley's poems speak to the very basic issues that, I dare say, all of us encounter. From the need for a hug (my personal favorite) to the issue of what it means to really be a man.

The book is an excellent way to explain where the poems came from and a little more about what they mean. The book creates a context for the poems that help people understand the poems and not jump to conclusions about what Bradley "really" meant.

This book/cd offers an enjoyable collection of honest, insightful, and sometimes satirical, poems that will make you laugh, cry, and think.

Editorial Review:

This book and CD capture the outrageous stories, experiences and observations of Bradley Hathaway, a fixture on the international festival and concert scene. All the Hits So Far combines his bold, honest poetry with commentary and original artwork, resulting in a rare glimpse into the mind and heart of a sensitive, hardcore "manly man" living life out loud through the microphone.
