Editorial Review:

From the time she was a child in Toronto, celebrated poet Luci Shaw has sent Advent greetings to her friends and family with a carefully crafted original poem. What began as a simple childhood exercise has now become a beloved annual tradition. Though a number of these poems have appeared elsewhere, Accompanied by Angels gathers all of them for the first time into a collection for all readers for any season of the year.

Beginning with the joy, terror, and wonder of the annunciation, Shaw leads the reader on a poetic journey through the birth, life, and death of Jesus the Christ, culminating in the joyous and unexpected wonder of his resurrection. Her subjects run from the mundane to the sublime, from birds in flight and waiting old men to fiery angels and storm-ravaged ridges.

Bentley's Generous Act 5 out of 5 stars.
38 of 38 people found this review helpful.

The scholarship that works through this book is obviously one of love and devotion of many many years. Bentley's sorting out of events in Blake's life is amazingly well researched - it is the first Blake biography that does not have that usual blur of focus that leaves one more mystified than enlightened. Blake's contemporaries, friends, enemies, patrons, etc. are all given voice through their own extant letters, articles . . - this contextualizes him beautifully and clears the field of critical debris that has grown out over the centuries. In fact, it is Bentley's sober critical eye (of fairness) which is so refreshing - his sense of balance is impeccable. Only a lifetime lover of Blake could hit so consistently true tones. But if you're arriving to this book looking for critical scholarship of the work and myth than you're walking through the wrong door. This book is not about the minutae of the work (see Northrop Frye for that) - it assumes already that one is also a lover and "understander" of the work. This book is about the man - written and informed, of course, by the man's work, but is a book about Blake's life - not a treatise on Urthona. Yes, I recommend this book. Walk on in and stroll around.

Editorial Review:

This fascinating and generously illustrated biography of William Blake, the great English artist, poet, and mystic, encompasses virtually everything that is known of his life and times. Often invoking the words of Blake’s own contemporaries, G. E. Bentley describes the struggles of Blake’s youth, his gradual embrace of the power of the spirit and visionary art and literature, and the serenity he achieved in his old age.

The REAL Truth about Footprints 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Margret Fishback Powers did not write "Footprints in the Sand". It was written by Floyd Keaton of Red Oak, Iowa during WWII. There are many people who have seen his ORIGINAL dated manuscript writtin in pencil on notebook paper PRIOR to 1964. Please contact the Montgomery County Historical Society in Red Oak for more information.

She Wrote It 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Margaret Fishback Powers is an extraordinary woman who has been through and accomplished extraordinary things. What's more is I know the woman behind the book and the poem. She is heartfelt and genuine. She and her husband, also an author, tour the world in the name of Christ and are not boastful in any way. I'm sad to see people deny her rights to the poem and I'm glad for her that she finally gets the credit (in most cases) that she deserves.

Editorial Review:

For many years the poem "Footprints" was an anonymous sensation, spreading its message of divine care on plaques, cards, calendars, and posters all over the world. But in 1989, Margaret Fishback Powers emerged as the author of the poem. Here Powers tells the inspiring story of how the famous poem was written, its personal meaning, and the role it has played in her own life.

A contemporary, timeless treasure. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This little volume has aged well. It is a gift for those who are invited to reacquaint themselves with Mary, the real woman who was chosen to give birth to Jesus. Long ago and far away might just as well be here and now. We still struggle to accept that God chooses to become human. This book offers a loving portrait of the woman who accepted mystery and became its bearer. Don't just read it. Allow it to speak to your heart and empower your dreams.

Must Read - understand the heart of Our Blessed Mother. 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book/poem beautifully illustrates the heart of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. The reader comes to understand her thoughts, emotions, and, especially, her silence as she watches Jesus grow, enter public life, be crucified and resurrected.

The book may be a little difficult to get into, but by the time Jesus is lost in the temple, you can't put the book down. Truly a wonderful insight into Mary as she "pondered these things in her heart."

Editorial Review:

A classic epic poem about Mary's fidelity and piety.

Mountain Breezes 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

It is a sad fact that many of Amy Carmichael's most moving poems are now found only in volumes long out of print. To remedy this situation is one of the goals of this publication. To make more accessible the many bits of poetry - usually untitled in situ - scattered throughout her various works of prose is another. But above all, we the editors wish to more adequtely display both the depth and breath of her saintly insights. For though they span nearly 55 years of her remarkable life, they are timeless.

Some of these 568 poems may strike the careful reader as (to use Amy's words) "not perfected" - but we are convinced they are a mere minority. (Can every sentiment of even the greatest muse be graded above average?) Most of her verses we find to be not only mature but truly discerning and stirring to the spirit. Some we regard as genuine masterpieces, both as to form and content - and we trust you come to the same conclusion.

Much effort has been taken to title the poems and to group them by theme, so as to increase their helpfulness to the heart yearning for a closer walk with Christ. Accordingly, we have divided them under seven major heads: Worship, Petition, Surrender, Ministry, Wartime, Encouragement, and Yourthful Thoughts. Many of the poems, of course, overflow the bounds of their designated category - for who can contain the zephyrs which sweep refreshingly across a mountanous terrain? And such are these "mountain breezes."

It is our desire and hope that the Spirit who moved the heart of His servant to express herself in these vibrant stanzas will captivate your heart and mind also as you enter into the cascade of these inspring minds.

66 Mystical Gems 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

These poems are in class with the great mystic poets, Donne, Blake and Dickenson. Fine translation and beautiful book.

Editorial Review:

These 66 poems, presented here in English and Yiddish on facing pages, were collected in the first book Abraham Joshua Heschel ever published. They appeared in Warsaw in 1933 when Heschel was 26 years old and still a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of Berlin. Written between 1927 and 1933 - and never published in English before - this is the intimate spiritual diary of a devout European Jew, loyal to the revelation at Sinai and afflicted with reverence for all human beings. These poems sound themes that resonate throughout Heschel's later popular writings: human holiness, a passion for truth, awe and wonder before nature, God's quest for righteousness, solidarity with the downtrodden, and unwavering commitment to tikkun olam. In these poems we also discover a young's man's acute loneliness, dismay at God's distance, and dreams of spiritual and sensual intimacy with a woman.

Rich and expansive 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This collection lives up to the title, providing a rich and expansive corpus of poems that leads one on a journey of discovery -- through the eyes of poets across the ages and continents -- of that which resonates across time and space at the core of all human spirits. A joy to give away as well as to keep. The organization according to time eras juxtaposes that which is culturally familiar side by side with the unfamiliar to startle one into the realization of the commonality and continuity of the voice of wisdom, beauty, and spiritual transcendence.

Editorial Review:

This original and insightful anthology of more than 600 mystical poems offers insights into the trials and ecstasies of the mystical path. Drawing on the works of legends such as John Donne, W.B. Yeats, T.S. Elliot, and Dante and famous texts like the Bible, Bhagavad Gita, and Tao Te Ching, Poetry for the Spirit is filled with spiritual inspiration for students at every step on the path to enlightenment. Invoking deep resonances of the human experience, it provides comfort and sustenance.

A Problematic But Great Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Since no one else has written about Clarel, I thought I'd be nice to Melville and congratulate him on his epic poem. Although the poetry itself isn't always brilliant, I felt that the general tone of melancholic spirituality was powerful. Essentially, to me, Clarel was about a young man questioning his world, and searching for meaning in a seemingly meaningless existence. The book parallels Melville's own travels in Jeruseleum, and with this work, we get a glimpse into Melville's interpretation of spirituality. Highly recommended, considering that it is overshadowed by that other Melville work (Moby Dick, of course!).

Editorial Review:

The aim of this edition of Clarel, volume twelve in the Northwestern-Newberry Edition of The Writing of Herman Melville, is to present a text as close to the authors intention as surviving evidence permits. Based on the only edition published during Melville's lifetime, it adopts 39 correction from a copy marked by Melville and incorporates 154 emendations by the present editors.
