Editorial Review:

"When our gaze awakens to the gaze of God, we have started to see. Seeing clearly, we can love well."

Seeing with New Eyes is collection of essays written over almost twenty years by a respected biblical counselor. David Powlison’s articles are Bible exposition, topical essay, editorial, and sermon. All of them show God’s gracious self-revelation in Jesus Christ and Scripture.

"We learn to see how God sees," writes Powlison. "Learning the gaze of God, we come to weigh life aright. We discern good and evil, fair and foul, lovely and degraded. We become able to pry apart true from false, instead of living in a murk of half-truths and flat lies."

This book explores two main topics.

- Scripture: God’s voice speaks into real life to reveal the gaze and intentions of the Christ who pursues us. How do we embrace, probe, and unravel Scripture?

- Understanding people amid their real life struggles: How do we embrace, probe, and unravel the problems of daily life?

We learn how to see many of life’s struggles through the lens of Scripture, including

- Worry

- Victimization

- Love languages

- Biological Psychiatry

Powlison encourages readers to "think Christianly" by thinking God’s thoughts after him. He asks, "Does God have a take on counseling? Of course, yes, amen." This book seeks to listen, look, and think hard within the patterns of God’s gaze.

God has the real take on things. And God teaches us his gaze!

Are You Making God Famous? 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Some years back, when Don Cousins did a faithfulness/fruitfulness self-assessment, he reluctantly gave himself a two out of nine score. He wrote, "Suddenly I knew: I was about to get pruned." You absolutely must read this book.

Don Cousins sees leadership from one of the most unique perspectives in North America. After 17 years on the staff of Willow Creek Community Church (including the role of associate pastor), he began consulting with other churches and megachurches in 1992.

So with this year's media hubbub about Willow Creek (see the video at RevealNow.com "Bill Hybels Responds to `Willow Creek's Huge Shift'"), you'll miss the whole story--the important story--if you don't also read some of the historical context from Cousins, along with his biblical insight and personal reflections on leadership.

In his book, Cousins thoughtfully attacks leadership heresies and addresses the high price of heresy, the success heresy, the credit heresy and the organizational heresy. His original thinking--steeped in humility and biblical thinking--will get your attention.

A pastor friend borrowed my book this month and preached on the four questions (four F's) from the "The Success Heresy" chapter. Cousins asks: 1) Are you being faithful? 2) Are you bearing fruit? 3) Are you fulfilled? 4) Are you making God famous?

The Results Bucket is one of 20 buckets in my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit. Cousins asks the ultimate results question, "How do you know you're being successful?" What's the measurement in your organization? Are they the right ones? For more help, read Bill Hoyt's book, Effectiveness by the Numbers: Counting What Counts in the Church.

Editorial Review:

Fueled by the drive to be bigger and better, today's church has adopted principles and practices created by the corporate world. The result is a toxic mix of the spiritual and the secular, where success is measured in numbers, and pastors are encouraged to become CEO superstars.

In short, the world is infl uencing the church. How do we get back to a biblical foundation for leadership and church development?

Trusted and best-selling author Don Cousins will take you on a groundbreaking exploration of what makes a church leader successful. Lead using the gifts God has given you. Fulfi ll your calling to be a leader who equips others for the work of service. Experience God's blessings as you carry out His work, His way.

In the top 3, most profound books I have ever read 5 out of 5 stars.
48 of 50 people found this review helpful.

As a Christian for 30 years and an evangelical pastor/US Army chaplain and licensed Therapist, I have read lots and lots and lots of books. This book by Dan is truely one of the most profound books that I have ever read. It is worth reading and re-reading. His stories and narrative portions put images and real-life flesh and blood on our living out the true power of the Gospel and Christ's love into our own real-life worlds.

Editorial Review:

Don't Waste Your Pain

None of us escapes the heartache and disappointments of life. To live is to hurt, and we all have the wounds to prove it. Regardless of how we've been hurt, we all face a common question: What should we do with our pain? Should we stoically ignore it? Should we just "get over it"? Should we optimistically hope that everything will work out in the end?

If we fail to respond appropriately to the wounds that life and relationships inflict, our pain will be wasted; it will numb us or destroy us. But suffering doesn't have to mangle our hearts and rob us of joy. It can, instead, lead us to life--if we know the path to healing.

Healing is not the resolution of our past; it is the use of our past to draw us into deeper relationship with God and his purposes for our lives. If you're ready to shape a future characterized by love, service, and joy, now is the time to step out onto The Healing Path.

"SALVA VIDAS MATRIMONIAL" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

muy interesante 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Gary Chapman explains how people communicate love in different ways and shares the wonderful things that happen when men and women learn to speak each other's language.

Indispensable tool for the Christian counselor 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

You will learn more about human psychology in this one volume than you will ever learn in years of studying Freud, Skinner, Rogers, or anyone else for that matter. Grounded in scriptural teachings like Ezek. 14:3-5, James 4:1-3 and Jonah 2:8 (among many others), this exposition of the idolatry that is rampant in the hearts of humans of every stripe (including Christians, sadly) will provide invaluable insights into what's REALLY going on inside the head and heart of your counselee.

The doctrines laid out in this book have such broad application in so many areas of life, and to such a wide range of counseling issues, that it has become integrated into the standard counseling curriculum for many nouthetic counselors regardless of the counselee's specific presentation problems. If you want to become an effective Christian counselor, you really need to have a grasp on these issues and incorporate them into your counseling practice. Even if you're not a counselor, these teachings are insightful for understanding your own life, thoughts, actions, family, etc. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

For those who ask if there is more... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There is a growing sense among many within the church that there must be more. Futurists including George Barna suggest that there is a significant number of believers choosing to go underground in their faith --- forming home groups in an effort to foster the kinds of relationships that can't naturally happen during a few hours on Sunday morning.

In BECOMING A TRUE SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY, Larry Crabb addresses the heart issues behind the changes taking place in the church. He points out that most people who choose to follow Jesus assume that they'll find a spiritual community of friends, a kind of family that will enjoy each other's company as they encourage one another to spiritual maturity. More often than not, though, they are sorely disappointed. Though Christians hunger for a community of deep rich relationships, both new and veteran believers often find themselves frustrated that these kinds of connections don't happen naturally.

The relationships among believers often can be compared to a series of rocking chairs on a front porch lined up side by side. Though every seat may be filled and cordial dialogue exchanged, the real hunger in people's hearts is to have the chairs placed in a circle facing each other. In the same way, we long for our souls to be turned toward each other.

Rather than offer four magical steps or three quick ways to community, Crabb takes readers on a journey to explore the nature of life with the Trinitarian revelation as a backdrop for the longings of a relationship. He invites readers to turn the focus inward and examine the weaknesses that short-circuit their own ability to enter real spiritual community.

Crabb explains some of our core struggles with intimate relationships in the context of the Lower Room and the Upper Room. The Lower Room is the place of our own flesh --- where our passions for self, control, defining our own lives and performance tear us away from each other and who God designed us to be. This stands in dark contrast to the Upper Room, where the passion to worship, trust, grow and obey reshape and renew who we are to look more like Jesus. When we as individuals abide in the Upper Room, we are better prepared to partake of the true spiritual community God intended.

Crabb is incredibly vulnerable and honest about his own shortcomings throughout the book. He isn't afraid to look at his own failures, sins and faults in an effort to uncover our own. The transparency is refreshing and moving. Beyond being a brilliant thinker, he is also a great writer. His descriptions dance, and his insights pack a punch.

BECOMING A TRUE SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY is like a balm for those in the church who keep thinking There must be more. Crabb assures us that there is more --- much more --- but it's going to have to take intentional decisions and movement by every individual to get there. The journey isn't easy, but it's well worth it.

--- Reviewed by Margaret Oines

Editorial Review:

In today's frenetic society, people rarely develop intimate friendships. Instead, they spend their lives essentially disconnected from others, rushing through life content with brief visits and casual conversations. But what if one were to develop a community, a spiritual community, of people who walked with and supported each other through life's journey? A community of real friends who listened to each other's personal tragedies without merely trying to fix the problems, who encouraged and nurtured each other's strengths, and who accepted people for who they really are, instead of the image they try to portray. In The Safest Place on Earth, Larry Crabb explores such a place, where God can heal disconnected people and allow them to reconnect with each other and, ultimately, with Him.

Murray is one of those authors I always wish I were reading at the computer, so I could file the inspiring quotes that pop off the page. For years I have turned to Andrew Murray for instructional revelation on deep matters of the Kingdom. "Waiting on God" is, of course, a classic. As a daily devotional or revisited old friend, this compact text is essential reading in any Christian library. How often are we taught to wait, much less to wait on God? Providing a definition and practical insights into methods of waiting, Murray offers invaluable help to seekers of serenity. This Whitaker House edition is pocketsize and portable. I give it as a gift to treasured friends. You will read it again and again.

Editorial Review:

A Longing for God

Within us there is a deep yearning for what God can and will do in our lives. In WAITING ON GOD Andrew Murray helps us discover the power unleashed to believers who wait on the Lord. This is an encouragement for more than quiet anticipation, but is a call to a dynamic attitude and an active faith in the ways of God. These thirty-one devotional readings guide us to a deeper sense of God’s presence and dependence on him.

Yearn to wait on God
-For redemption
-For his guidance
-In times of darkness
-To know his goodness
-Continually

WAITING ON GOD speaks as clearly and poignantly to Christians today as it did more than a century ago when it was written. This edition is edited and updated for today’s reader.

My opinion of Happiness is a Choice 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I feel that the title expresses the content very well. For those who are going through depression or will be in the future, there are steps given that can cure it. Also, in general the book gives suggestions on how to choose happiness. Itis a choice available to all.

This book is disgraceful 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

It really upsets me when people release stuff like this; it should come with a warning DON'T READ unless you are a fantic christian.

Its disturbing because the people reading this are more likely to be depressed and looking for help, which is why I picked up this book. But to have phrases in it like;
"his sons become homosexuals and eventually commit suicide"

Is wrong, misleading and could potentially do untold damage.

I love books, but would quite happily burn this one.

Editorial Review:

Happiness Is a Choice has helped hundreds of thousands of people understand and overcome depression. Drawing from their professional training, counseling experience, and biblical knowledge, the authors provide expert answers to questions such as: What causes depression? Is there a cure for depression? Why do Christians suffer from depression? and more. Minirth and Meier explore the complex relationship between spiritual life and psychological health and then spell out basic steps for recovering from depression and maintaining a happy, fulfilling life. Families, pastors, counselors, and anyone struggling to overcome depression will benefit from this book.
