honest book about a controversial subject 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 32 people found this review helpful.

Alan Chambers is the president of Exodus Internatinal, an organization that helps men and women leave the homosexual lifestyle, through a saving faith in Jesus Christ. Once a gay man himself, he is now a Christian, married, with a son and a daughter.
He makes no effort to justify the lifestyle or deny what the Bible says about it. He does, however, explode several popular secular myths about homosexuality. He also points out a shameful situation that exists in our churches. We send missionaries overseas, but fail to address the mission field in our own community. All too often the gay men and women who do attend church feel unwelcome, and too many times they are met with hostility and protestors. This book is geared toward churches that are willing to minister to homosexuals, and is an important resource for anyone interested in taking the gospel to the homosexual community. Alan Chambers will probably take some heat from both sides over this book, because it's about a very controversial subject. I will admit I approached it with some reservations and preconcieved opinions, most of which I learned in church. I'm glad I read it and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in ministry in this sadly neglected field.

Editorial Review:

Author Alan Chambers—a former homosexual himself—and four of his colleagues at Exodus International offer practical and biblical insights on how both individuals and churches can become a haven for homosexuals seeking freedom from same–sex attraction.

In this comprehensive guide to helping homosexuals, readers will learn about:

  • The roots of homosexuality
  • God’s radical grace for sexual sinners
  • Reaching youth both within and outside the church
  • Dealing with fear and ignorance in the church
  • Leading gays to Christ
  • Mentoring homosexuals in the church
  • Three degrees of homosexuality: militant, moderate or repentant
  • Five things not to do in reaching out to gays

and much more about this often perplexing subject.

should specify Christian.... 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was somewhat useful, though I might turn more often to the practical aspects of the questionnaire itself, as I didn't feel it offered much that was new. I do think that on the cover it should somewhere specify that it's directed toward those doing PASTORAL counseling, by and large. I am unlikely, for example, to ask my clients to pray with me, and even more unlikely to include the questionnaire item: "Do you have a personal faith in Jesus Christ?" Can't imagine why this wasn't written more inclusively. It would be fine with me to ask: "Tell me about your spiritual beliefs."

Editorial Review:

How to Counsel a Couple in 6 Sessions or Less makes it easier to counsel couples over a brief period of time, but also addresses major marital issues of communication, family issues, decision making and more. This highly practical resource for pastors -- or anyone in ministry -- can be used with The Marriage Checkup Questionnaire or as a stand alone tool for quickly diagnosing problems and referring couples to a professional, as necessary.

Highly Recommended 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This work appears to be the most cutting-edge, sophisticated text available on the integration of self-development, counseling technique, and Christian theological reflection. The theoretical and philosophical base is highly relational and contextual, as evidenced by consistent attention to matters of intersubjectivity, multiculturalism, and ethics. The author uses the psychodynamic rubric of transference and countertransference to unearth the hidden power of counselor-client interaction - a power that has the potential for great healing or destruction. The overall theme and thesis of the book is this: In the counseling context, therapists and ministers have the high calling to use their `selves' in ways that are responsible, reflective, respectful and real. This necessitates a commitment to personal and spiritual growth through self-awareness and clinical consultation.

The first two chapters provide a detailed history of countertransference in the psychodynamic and pastoral care fields. These chapters illustrate the general attitudinal shift from fearful shunning to responsive acceptance of countertransference in helping relationships. Chapter three continues to lay theoretical groundwork through a concise examination of relational, postmodern philosophy and it's implications for human communication and theological reflection. Chapters four through six delve into the complexity of "understanding one's personal issues and emotional reactions" in helping relationships. Extremely helpful and well-written case studies are used to illustrate and apply the concepts to highly believable real-life situations. The consistent theme throughout these chapters is that the counselor's emotional responses can function as either healing or harmful therapeutic junctures. The final chapter integrates the concepts into a theological framework that is compelling and relevant.

The intended audience includes persons in the fields of pastoral care and ministry, social work, counseling psychology or therapy. Overall, this book is highly recommended as an essential resource for therapist self-development.

Editorial Review:

The deeper dynamics of pastoral care and counseling--

Understanding one’s personal issues and emotional reactions—one’s "countertransference"—has long been recognized as a core competency in ministry. Now new understandings of intersubjectivity, mutual influence, shared wisdom (both conscious and unconscious), and multicultural dynamics in the caring relationship are bringing promising new possibilities and challenges to pastoral practice.

Employing these insights, in this groundbreaking book Pamela Cooper-White offers a new relational paradigm for pastoral assessment and theological reflection. She uses the caregiver’s own responses and feelings as a primary instrument for deepening discernment and better care. She innovatively combines postmodern, psychoanalytic, and theological perspectives with illuminating case studies to illustrate this new use of the self in pastoral care, counseling, and psychotherapy.

Experience Freedom in Communicating With Others! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Backus' book is a refreshing read to communicate openly and lovingly with others and avoid manipulation.

Among the many important points covered in the book include:

1. When we lose integrity, we become a fraction of the person God created us to be.
2. We fail to receive because we fail to ask.
3. Do's and dont's for criticizing others.
4. Characteristics of loving speech.
5. God does not guarantee we will always be around people who will always act properly.
6. Adding your own self-criticism to a person's critical remarks can stop people in their tracks.
7. Do not pride yourself on not making requests.
8. Attention and compliments are nice, but they do not determine our self-worth.

Read and be encouraged to be less manipulative of others and loving them more!

Editorial Review:

Now in a fresh package, this classic on learning the art of true communication is good news for all. The author uses Scripture, case histories, and dialogue to impart timeless principles that can heal damaged relationships, strengthen everyday communication, and help people avoid the traps of manipulation that often disrupt the free flow of honest discussion. Readers will find this information invaluable in every relationship of life--especially those that don’t come easy.

Editorial Review:

Time alone cannot heal the memories of experiences so painful that we’ve been pushing them out of our conscious minds for many years. Yet such memories continue to cause us emotional and spiritual problems. They must be dealt with directly and deliberately by a special kind of spiritual therapy that Dr. David Seamands calls memory healing. This form of Christian counseling coupled with prayer focuses the healing power of the Holy Spirit on the root of the problem and breaks the bondage of traumatic memories.

Redeeming the Past (formerly titled Healing of Memories) has helped hundreds of thousands of people discover how God’s healing power can free them from the tyranny of painful memories which affect their behavior and Christian growth.

David A. Seamands is the best-selling author of books such as Healing for Damaged Emotions, Putting Away Childish Things, If Only, Freedom from the Performance Trap, and Healing Meditations for Life. A former missionary and pastor, Dr. Seamands is now Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Ministries and Counselor in Residence at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky.

Combines scholarly discussion with Biblical insights 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I have just completed my classes for a doctorate in counseling psychology and have had dozens of books assigned as texts over the years. To be honest, most of them sit in one of my "backroom" bookcases. This book is one of the exceptions.

This work covers the major theories of pscyhotherapy and makes you feel like someone who has a firm grasp of them when you read it. The review from a Biblical viewpoint really gives you a lot to think about. The authors are also very objective, not showing favorites among the various schools of thought. This book is a must for every student and teacher of counseling and psychology.

Exceptional book for both Christian and Secular readers 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I'm a psychologist in training, and have many books reviewing various psychotherapies on my shelves, but this remains one of my favorite resources. It explores a number of therapeutic approaches, first by reviewing the thoughts of the approach's founder, then by discussing modern uses. These writeups are useful regardless of whether or not you're looking for a Christian view of the different approaches.

At the end of each chapter, there is a section discussing the approaches as they relate to foundational Biblical principles. This is not a text whose purpose is to spout opinions or dogma; it serves as a strong and rational look at the different aspects of each approach discussed. The reader will come away with a better understanding not only of modern psychotherapeutic approaches, but also with which aspects of those approaches are Biblical in nature, which aren't, and why. Particuarly useful for those building an integrative or electic foundation, or who wish to base their chosen orientation on Biblical principles.

Editorial Review:

Stanton L. Jones and Richard E. Butman survey and evaluate the most significant psychotherapies now in use, including Freudian analysis, behavior modification, existential therapy, family therapy, Jungian therapy, and six others.

Editorial Review:

In recent years, many Christian clergy, laity and mental health professionals have rediscovered the ancient practices of spiritual direction. Seen as a refreshing alternative to the techniques and limitations of modern psychology, such practices offer new insights for pastoral care. But many remain unclear on what spiritual direction is and whether its methods are applicable to their own clients and parishioners.

Spiritual direction is a practice of Christian soul care that is found most notably in the Catholic, Orthodox and Episcopal traditions but is also present in Wesleyan/Holiness, Pentecostal/charismatic, social justice and Reformed communities. Predating modern counseling and psychotherapy movements but sharing key principles and insights for spiritual formation, spiritual direction offers significant resources for today's pastors, counselors, therapists, chaplains and other caregivers attuned to the work of God in people's lives.

In this landmark volume, editors Gary W. Moon and David G. Benner, along with a team of expert contributors, provide a comprehensive survey of spiritual direction in its myriad Christian forms. Specific chapters offer careful historical perspective and contemporary analysis of how Christians from various backgrounds have practiced spiritual direction, with particular attention to each tradition's definition of spiritual direction, the process of authentic transformation, the role of the spiritual director, indicators of mature spirituality and other aspects of the spiritual direction process. Chapters also provide psychological and clinical insight into how spiritual direction is similar to, different from and can be integrated with psychotherapy and pastoral counseling to help others experience spiritual transformation and union with God.

Practical and Profound 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book is life giving tonic for the evangelical pastor or ministry leader who wants to see wise counsel flourish among ordinary Christians, rather than remain the uncontested property of the mental health establishment. Powlison, brings a theologically rich, biblically sagacious, interpersonally wise perspective to help us navigate the minefields before us: defining terms, discussing models, paradigms and institutions--and how to sanely bring redemptive ministry to people stuck in perversion and pain. In doing so, Powlison deftly avoids the simplistic "take two verses and call me in the morning" as well as the "Jesus is my ticket to heaven, and my therapist is my ticket to wholeness" approach that characterizes much of the Christian counseling world.

My criticism is minor. The chapters can seem a bit duck-taped together since I believe it is a compilation of articles turned into a book. However, for a small shortcoming, those wanting to impart wise, winsome and redemptive biblical help to Christians in the trenches of sin and fallenness to do much worse than Powlison's handy little volume.

Editorial Review:

Have you ever wondered how to be a more effective counselor ? Have you ever looked for a better way to talk to difficult people? The principles outlined in this pivotal work are specific to counseling, yet extend to marriage, family, friendship, business and the church. Practical in its approach yet comprehensive in its scope, Speaking Truth in Love is sure to become required reading for anyone interested in pursuing a career as a counselor or anyone else who longs for ways to redeem relationships.
