A Lady of Secret Devotion 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I thought "A Lady of Secret Devotion" an entirely delightful story. It is so important not to be unequally yolked, and the story tells how God can work out all of the details in order to bring about many circumstances. Whether it is bringing the man you care for into a relationship with Him, or keeping you safe from unwanted attention and protection. Tracy Peterson uses her gift of writing to proclaim God's love for us all without doing it in a preachy way. She shows us ways to be in God's will by simple example. I would recommend this book along with the other two in the Ladies of Liberty series, "A Lady of High Regard" and "A Lady of Hidden Intent". They were books you don't want to put down until you come to the end, which is always too soon.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Christendom is dying and needs to be removed from its life-support system. Starting with this frank assessment of the current church, Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch present an alternative model for ministry in todayÂ’s postmodern world. Instead of mourning the demise of the Western church as the center of society, the authors explain how the church can be reborn through incarnational mission, messianic spirituality, and apostolic structure. Church leaders who heed the authorsÂ’ call will see death turned into new life through the creation of a vital, missional church.

[Frost and HirschÂ’s] contribution brings an in-depth theological reflection as well as providing a broad scope informed by their extensive reading in theology, culture and mission as well as their on-site visits to missional churches in the USA and the United Kingdom.
—Eddie Gibbs, Donald A. McGavran Professor of Church Growth, Fuller Theological Seminary

This book is a bountiful multi-course meal, each serving presented with charm and class. It will satisfy even eclectic appetites, and please the most discriminating palates. Four Stars.

The Reign of God 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Among other things, "Missional Church" deals unusually comprehensively with the term "reign of God". Mostly, when one encounters this term, its meaning is assumed or merely suggested through the context. I shall seek here merely to draw out what the text itself communicates.

A reign is not the same as a kingdom. "Reign" is represented in the New Testament by the Greek word "hegemonia" (e.g. Lk. 3:1), while "kingdom" is represented by the Greek word "basileia" (e.g. Mk. 1:15). The authors maintain that the reign of God "better captures . . . the dynamic meaning of basileia". The word "kingdom", on the other hand, is "too static, political, and archaic".

The reign of God, therefore, is something in progression. It has to do with "God's intended future for the world". It envisions "a world characterized by peace, justice, and celebration". This may be summarised as "shalom" (broadly: peace). This is not "a social project" that we ourselves bring about. Rather it is something that we "receive and enter". It is "accomplished in the death and resurrection of Jesus". That is, it is God's project, of which we ourselves may become a part.

In the past -- in fact "many times through the church's history" -- the Church has "lost its sense of this gospel of the reign of God". It did this by separating "the news of the reign of God from God's provision for humanity's salvation". This made salvation a "private event" by separating "personal salvation" from "the advent of God's healing reign over all the world". Humanity's salvation, therefore, has to do with a coming, an "advent", over all the world.

What does it mean to "receive and enter" the reign of God? This touches on "the further issues of repentance and faith". Repentance is "a turning from other hopes and loyalties" -- that is, hopes and loyalties other than God's intended future for the world. Faith is defined as "a turning . . . from sinful rejections of God's rule as well as carefree disdain for God's mercy and care".

In fact, the theme of the reign of God is closely bound up with the theme of the whole book. The Churches of North America are in a "predicament", and need "a dramatically new vision". Therefore the Church needs to rediscover its essence "in its origins in the gospel", and this is "eschatological in character". It is "centered profoundly . . . in the announcement that the reign of God is at hand."

Editorial Review:

What would a theology of the church look like that took seriously the fact that North America is now itself a mission field? This question lies at the foundation of this volume written by an ecumenical team of six noted missiologists.

What an excellent book a must read.I also highly recommend reading GODS PROMISE TO THE CHINESE by Ethal Nelson and MYTH OF A CHRISTIAN NATION by Greg Boyd.
Lets face it americas "what have you done for me lately" cult of Christian prosperity and vanity is having dier consequences for the true gospel message. So God goes else where like HE has always done but He prepared the way long long ago as this book so beautifully reveals.
He will make a people for himself from every tribe, nation and tongue.

1 COR 1:27 "but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong."
JAMES 4:6 "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

Editorial Review:

The photograph on the cover of this book portrays the ruins of Machu Picchu, a majestic fortess in Peru built in the fifteenth century. Anyone who has been awed by its splendor will want to read how Pachacuti, the Inca king who founded it, accomplished something far more significant than merely building fortesses, temples or monuments. His story is yet another example of how the concept of a supreme God has existed for centuries in hundreds of cultures throughtout the world.

Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Shadow of the Almighty is by far the best biography I have ever read!!! It has been said that "You will be the same today, except for the people you meet and the books you read", I have found this to be very true in my life.

I feel you can glean so many spiritual nuggets from this book. From raising kids, praying for them, allowing God to use them, the importance of eating healthy and exercising, the value of education and when education is taking the place of God and true knowledge of Him....

Reading this book, almost makes the movie End of the Spear seem shallow. Unless you know the history of these men's lives before they went into missions it is easy to be disillusioned and think that a group of over zealous guys decided to go and reach the savage Auca Indianans, which is not the case. It was an absolute calling of God on each of their lives that God had been preparing them for most of their lives (at least this is the case with Jim Elliot). Even Elizabeth Elliot, Jim's wife, had the calling on her life. They were spiritually, intellectually, and physically prepared. Yes, they were a group of young, good looking, and fun guys, but they also were spiritually mature beyond their years and they knew their calling.

Elizabeth Elliot began compiling journal entries and letters of Jim's immediately after his death to begin the writing of Shadow of the Almighty, while the hurt and sting of her lose was still fresh! You will not find regret, resentment, bitterness or anger in her writing; only a life devoted to God even unto death. So while the book focuses on the life of Jim, remember it was his newly young widowed wife who wrote the very words contained within its pages.

I guess what so impresses me about this book, is that it is more than the retelling of Jim's life. Throughout the book are original writings of Jim's, you see what makes his heart beat, his passion, his frustrations, his surrendered obedience, his incredible faith. You will see God's sovereignty, His hand, leading and weaving Jim's life and death.

The story begins with his childhood, and continues on up to his death. Really his story still carries on today. How many people has Jim's life impacted even now 50 years later? While in college ,Jim at one point lets His grades suffer a bit so that he can focus on earning the Degree of A.U.G. (Approved Under God). I am so impressed with chapter 3, here you will find a handsome, athletic, intelligent young man keep his focus on the Lord in an atmosphere that pulls most people away. At this point he doesn't even take his parents advice, if it is not what he is hearing from the Spirit. His obedience to Christ makes him a true leader among his classmates.
Following is a journal entry of Jim's, it show the wisdom and insight he had as a young man. "No one warns young people to follow Adam's example. He waited until God saw his need. Then God made Adam sleep, prepared for his mate, and brought her to him. We need more of this 'being asleep' in the will of God. Then we can receive what He brings us in His own time, if at all. Instead we are bloodhounds after a partner, considering everyone we see until our minds are so concerned with the sex problem that we can talk of nothing else when bull-session time comes around. It is true that a fellow cannot ignore women-but he can think of them as he ought-as sisters, not as sparring partners!"

Editorial Review:

The bestselling account of the martyrdom of Jim Elliot and four other missionaries at the hands of the Auca Indians in Ecuador. New introduction by the author.

I give it 3 1/2 stars but don't let that deter you!! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I want to say that this book was enjoyable to read. It had an interesting story and a little bit of humor. It is very different from Peterson's Broadmoor Legacy books and even further from her last series, the Ladies of Liberty.

This book opens with the death of her father, George Gallatin. A man with a great heart but no exceptional abilities, he moved his family around teh country before ending up in the rugged territory of Montana running a stage stop.

Gwen Gallatin and her sisters are left alone running the stage stop and dealing with their grief. Losing her father to a fluke accident after sending him on an errand and widowed on her wedding day (she decides to keep her maiden name), she feels she is a curse to those she loves and will eventually be the cause of death of all those she cares for.

Hank Bishop (of course he is smart, rich, and handsome!) is seeking Gwen, the widow of his brother. Expecting the worst of her he is surprised when he learns she is not a goldigger, but rather a sweet innocent, hurting woman. Hank, on a mission to return items his brother stole from the family, endures much while staying with the Gallatin sisters in their boarding house. He learns to admire these 3 women and the land they make their home.

Now I will share my opinions (and please don't take them personally--they are merely opinions!). While the characters were developed well enough, I found Gwens inner termoil frustrating and a little annoying. It was dragged out and dwelled upon and all the while it seemed rather silly to me. Also, the relationship between Hank and Gwen didn't flow in a realistic way. I didn't really buy it. While this book was enjoyable enough, it just wasn't what I've come to expect from this author. I still gave it 4 stars (though I heavily debated giving it 3) so it was still worthwhile.

Editorial Review:

Gwen, Beth, and Lacy Gallatin fashion a life for themselves in the Montana wilds, operating a roadhouse that is located at the crossroads of two major stage lines. When their father is accidentally killed, the oldest sister, Gwen, reasons that she's cursed. After all, death seems to haunt her: her mother, now her father...and she was married for a mere ten days before her husband died from a bout of measles. As Gwen and her sisters struggle to maintain the inn on their own, an unexpected visitor adds to the mayhem. Hank Bishop claims to be searching for something in the possession of Gwen's late husband. But mayhem of another sort builds in Gwen's heart as she finds a growing attraction to this man. Can she dare to hope that love might again be hers?

A Story Relevant for Today 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Where the Heart Leads is an engaging story about Thomas Ollenberger, a young man torn between his Mennonite roots on the Kansas prairie and his love for the big city of Boston. Thomas also struggles with his attraction toward two women. Two women who are so different, the only thing they have in common is their feelings for Thomas.

Even though this novel is set in 1904, it still resonates with what people experience today. We all must decide on a daily basis what path we choose. Do we let ourselves be drawn to what looks like the ultimate path to happiness? Or do we seek God for His direction and His timing?

And sometimes, when we think we have it all figured out . . . God surprises us.

I have to admit--this book was not satisfying for me--but only because I was not ready to see the story end! I wanted to read further and continue the journey I'd begun with the characters. Where the Heart Leads is the sequel to Kim's novel, Waiting for Summer's Return, another favorite of mine. Both also work well as stand-alone novels. You don't HAVE to read one to enjoy the other, but I encourage you to read both.

Editorial Review:

After his graduation from college, Thomas Ollenburger is filled with big dreams and many questions. What will he do for a career? Should he marry? Where will he call home? Torn between his Mennonite roots on the Kansas prairie and his love for the big city of Boston, as well as his affection for a girl in each location, Thomas is unsure of his place in the world. He has always sought God's leading in his decision-making, but now it seems as if God is staying silent. Has Thomas's heart led him astray?

Love's Long Journey 4 out of 5 stars.

I tried to read this book three times and gave up after a few chapters. Then I decided I was going to read it from cover to cover, and I was delighted to find that the book picks up momentum as it goes along. It's like the first few chapters your'e pushing uphill, and all of a sudden you arive at the top and . . . WHEEEEE!!!!!!! A wholesome, well written novel about a young couple starting a new life together in the West. Realistic - not a fairy tale - but a joy to read. If I had a complaint, it would be the polarization between the Christians and the non religious charactors. Missy is always feeling sorry for the lost people and thinking about how cold and hard their hearts are, and how they have problems. I am a Christian, and I feel it is important to share my faith with others, but it should be remembered that all people are created in a unique and special way - believers and unbelievers. There are very few people who are so sick they are just one lump of pain and problems. Also, I thought it was slightly annoying how Missy constantly sympathized with the trivial difficulties of her neighbors on the wagon train when she had just as bad or worse problems herself. Seems a bit like a saviour complex, to me. Having thus said, I enjoyed this book and would highly reccomend it to fans of Inspirational and historical fiction.

Editorial Review:

Christians are faced every day with daunting choices between difficult alternatives. "What does my Christian faith have to say about the moral issues that divide our society?" There are plenty of people on opposite sides of the spectrum claiming to know the will of God in these matters. It is nonetheless very difficult to find help in looking at both sides of these ethical questions, and applying the biblical witness to arrive at an authentically Christian belief about them.

This is precisely what Adam Hamilton proposes to do. Presented as a collection of sermons, Confronting the Controversies includes euthanasia, assisted suicide, creationism, abortion, and homosexuality. Scrupulously fair to both the positions of each side and their motivations for holding them, Hamilton offers clear, concise information on what is at stake in these explosive issues. Hamilton applies a careful, broad reading of Scripture to offer direct yet compassionate guidance on what a faithful Christian response will be.

Right up there near Brother Lawrence's "The Practice of the Presence of God" (free online at the Practice Gods Presence web site) are the wonderful works of Andrew Murray. "Absolute Surrender" is a classic in every sense.

These gifted children of God have a way of restating, enlivening, and magnifying the very words of Our Lord and do greatly glorify Our Father.

Editorial Review:

This book, considered a classic of Christian devotional literature, collects the inspirational sermons of an influential 19th-century preacher and missionary on the challenging matter of how devoted Christians should properly surrender to God. In clear, easy-to-understand language, this 1895 work discusses: . how the fruit of the Spirit is love . how what is impossible with man is possible with God . how believers are kept by the power of God . and more. Seekers after spiritual succor continue to find soulful sustenance and encouragement in this work more than a century after it was first published. A South African of Scottish ancestry, Dutch Reformed Church minister ANDREW MURRAY (1828-1917) was a prolific writer, publishing more than 200 books and pamphlets, including The School of Obedience and The Deeper Christian Life.
