I was looking forward to reading this book and when I started to read it I realized it was a religious book disquised as a different type of book. I am very disapointed and might send it back. Be aware.

Forgettable, Uninspiring 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The first part of the book was okay, as it outlined the types of people who are "unsafe", but it completely wimped out on the reader. The authors give no solutions for improving relationships or finding safe people.

I expected that the book would be a lot more practical, and it just wasn't. It was very clinical and dry. Additionally, I find some of the concepts a tad spiritually "iffy". They seem to play fast and loose with scriptures, applying scriptures to situations that would have benefitted from any number of different scriptures. It was weird. His interpretation of scripture was a little odd. Also, most of they said was not backed up with a lot of scripture when you really evaluate it.

Also, it was poorly written. The sentence construction was poor. Technically it was correct, but overall a hindrance when you have to read a sentence three times to figure out its point. They just aren't versed in the art of writing.

In all a really dull and uninspiring read. Not at all helpful. I wish I had something better to say about it, but I don't. It was disappointing and forgettable.

Oh, what an arrogant windbag! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thought I would like this book from the few pages I glanced at on Amazon.com, but it is absolutely horrible. It's like a research paper where stories/anecdotes are strung together with nothing in common. The author supposedly has been part of the 12-Steps, but this book is as far from a "12 Step book" or a meeting as one can get. The main author (Kurtz) has many prejudices about the 12-step fellowships and totally ignores any influence of the Oxford Group in AA's roots. I realize that AA didn't follow exactly in the Oxford Group's steps (absolutely honesty was too much understandably for alcoholics) but I think Kurtz just revises history by eliminating all the influence that group had on AA.

The stories are mostly by rabbis, and I love generally rabbinical stories, but these are pointless, dull and just used to pad the book. There are absolutely no feelings of the authors included, so that's why I think it's like a dull research paper. Didactic lecturing that didn't bring out any spirituality (of imperfection or perfection) in any friends that read it also. I hated being lectured to.

Try a book like You Can't Make Me Angry or one that helps one to grow.

Managing Your Emotions 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There were definitely some positive aspects to this book. I should acknolwedge that I've purchased many other Joyce Meyer books such as Battlefield of the Mind, Beauty for Ashes, The Battle Belongs to the Lord, In Pursuit of Peace etc. so sometimes in this book a few sections appear repetitive in accordance with her other works. I believe she copy/pasted from a few other books in some sections.

I was somewhat hesitant to purchase this book after already purchasing Beauty for Ashes which I believe is her best book that she has written. What swayed me in the direction of buying this book was because I saw chapters entitled "Codependency" and "Healing the Child Within" which I was kind of shocked to see in a Christian book. Those are typically secular psychology concepts. I knew she would present those topics in a balanced, scriptural way so I was kind of interested to see how she would approach it. She talked about codependency being dependent on people, behaviors, or things (which is the tradition definition) rather than being dependent on God alone. I did not like anything with regard to codependency because I just viewed it as addictions or idolatry of the Bible. And I came to a realization that it was just not being dependent on God alone like we should, which I was happy to see Joyce agreed with. And "Healing the Child Within" I thought is a dangerous topic because it so conflicts with scripture, but I was surprised in the way she dealt with it. She talked about "becoming as little children" like Jesus said in the Bible. And she talked about all the good attrtibutes of children we should strive after as adults in a very organized way.

These two chapters I don't think taught me anything new however. So, having Beauty for Ashes already (which I would highly recommend) I probably would not prefer to have bought it. Don't get me wrong, if you've never bought a Joyce Meyer book before, this could prove to be a very excellent book as she does cover many topics like in Beauty for Ashes and if it's all unique material for you, this book may be one of the best ones you've bought (besides the Bible). But I believe Beauty for Ashes is more complete and more applicable to my situation.

I think Joyce's two most important works are Battle Belongs to the Lord which discusses the importance of worship and praising God for who He is, and the second one is Beauty for Ashes which talks about abuse and how to deal with negative things others do to you. Battlefield of the Mind is her most popular book, and I think that is quite good to, and should be had more as a reference for times when you find yourself slipping into certain thinking habits.

Sometimes Joyce releases too many books in my opinion (smile) so it's hard for her to find fresh material. Very balanced unique books which I've read so far are Beauty for Ashes, Battlefield of the Mind, and The Battle Belongs to the Lord. They each have unique content which she worked hard on. I'm curious why she felt she wanted to release "Managing Your Emotions" when she already had "Beauty for Ashes" out. I felt if there was a topic unique to Managing Your Emotions which wasn't in Beauty for Ashes, then she should've thought about yet a nother new release revision and added those unique chapters to Beauty for Ashes. Her big thing in this book however was not being led by your emotions in making decisions, but rather by faith and God's input. I acknolwedge that is a unique concept. But her chapters on healing broken emotions and shame and forgiving yourself and others are very similar to Beauty for Ashes, and basically she is simply elaborating and emphasizing Jesus's teaching on the mount! Jesus is the one who revealed this, but I like how she emphasizes it. Hope this helps.

Editorial Review:

Joyce Meyer reveals powerful truths from God's Word that will help you learn to manage all of your emotions in the right direction. She challenges readers not to allow their feelings to determine their destiny, but manage them for a joyful, victorious life.

Amazing! 5 out of 5 stars.

I don't know how I managed to pick up this book, because I was searching for truth, not personal significance. But what a happy discovery! It was here I first learned principles both foundational and pertinent to my quest - for instance, that the focus of the Christian life is Christ, not rules and regulations, and that trying to make up for bad deeds with good ones does nothing more than send us into a useless "guilt-and-penance spiral."

Editorial Review:

Robert McGee's best-selling book has helped millions of readers learn how to be free to enjoy Christ's love while no longer basing their self-worth on their accomplishments or the opinions of others. In fact, Billy Graham said that it was a book that "should be read by every Christian."

In this re-launch of this timeless classic you will:

  • Gain new skills for getting off the performance treadmill
  • Discover how four false beliefs have negatively impacted your life
  • Learn how to overcome obstacles that prevent you from experiencing the truth that your self-worth is found only in the love, acceptance, and forgiveness of Christ

Discover what two million readers have already discovered: that true significance is found only in Christ.

I bought this product because my son had one (also called the "Shark") that would pick up sizable dog kibbies off the floor. This one was $20.00 more than he paid and it does an OK job if you're looking for a quick cleanup. The suction does not seem to be nearly that of what my son had, but it will pick up dog hair and crumbs and such. Also, I find that the bagless compartment has to be emptied quite often. Sorry, I couldn't say more. I was really excited to buy this machine, but not so excited when I actually used it.

HE DID AND I THANK THE GOOD LORD THAT HE WAS WILLING TO READ THAT LITTLE PAPERBACK BOOOK. This book contains the wisdom to turn a troubled marriage around. My husband had lost completly what it meant to cherish and love me. We were doomed. No other book, not even the Bible, was helping to breath life back into our marriage. stood at the window watching the cocoon, which hung in the winter air like an upside–down question mark. That was the moment... I understood. Really understood. Crisis, change, all the myriad upheavals that blister the spirit and leave us groping– they aren't voices simply of pain but also of creativity. And if we would only listen, we might hear such times beckoning us to a season of waiting, to the place of fertile emptiness.

Blending her own experiences with an intimate grasp of contemplative spirituality, Sue Monk Kidd relates the passionate and moving tale of her spiritual crisis at midlife, when life seemed to have lost meaning and how her longing for hasty escape from the pain yielded to a discipline of "active waiting." Comparing her experience to the formative processes inside a chrysalis on a wintry tree branch, Kidd reflects on the fact that the soul is often symbolized as a butterfly. The simple cocoon, a living parable of waiting, becomes an icon of hope for the transformation that the author sought. Kidd charts her re–ascent from the depths and offers a new understanding of the passage away from the

self, which is based upon others' expectations, to the true self of God's unfolding intention. Her wise, inspiring book helps those in doubt and crisis recognize the opportunity to "dismantle old masks and patterns and unfold a deeper, more authentic self." Powerful with many incites to getting were we need to be in regards to the right way to live. Learning to live the impossible and liking it.

A terrific primer on sanctification 5 out of 5 stars.

One of my first seminary classes in Romania was on personal spirituality. The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges was required reading.

A few months ago, I attended a Men's Conference hosted by pastor Johnny Hunt. The Pursuit of Holiness was provided free-of-charge to every man in attendance. Reading the book a second time reminded me of why I enjoyed this book so much the first time.

In The Pursuit of Holiness, Bridges exposes the myths that we so easily believe regarding our holiness.

Isn't holiness God's job? Shouldn't I just let go and let God? In short, Bridges says, "No!" The Bible does not speak of holiness this way.

I just can't seem to get "victory" over sin. Bridges' response? God calls us to obedience, not victory.

At least the sins I commit aren't that bad. Bridges says we should stop justifying our sin and realize that little compromises lead to great downfalls.

The Pursuit of Holiness is a helpful book on spiritual growth because it grounds our pursuit of holiness in the holiness of God himself. Do not expect a book of moralistic advice. Bridges' work is grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the grace that comes from salvation. Rather than seeing free grace as a roadblock to holy living, he rightfully shows how the gospel is the driving force for a life of holiness.

If you are looking for a book on personal holiness, pick up Jerry Bridges' classic work. He will encourage you, challenge you, comfort you, and then tell you: "God calls us to holiness. Now get on with it!"

Wrong Approach For Christians to Use 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Buford attempts to provide a process for the middle aged ("half timers") to improve the second half of their lives. Buford believes:

"the second half of your life can be better than the first. Much better. But first, you need time to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. So he recommends that a reader call "halftime" to reflect not only on where he's going, but why. What is the source of Buford's wisdom? A "blend of personal insight, true-life examples, and quotes from those who have successfully navigated the exhilarating and potentially dangerous shoals of midlife."

Despite its portrayal as a resource for Christians, Half Time is essentially a "man made" process for making decisions because it:

1. wrongly assumes that everyone has a similar history ("first half" experiences) and needs;

2. measures success ("significance") by man made criteria;

3. replaces biblical sanctification (getting closer to God) with accomplishing certain steps to obtain significance;

4. presupposes that a "one size fits all" process will work to make major life decisions; and

5. gives the false impression that a formula can be implemented to secure one's future.

We are led to believe that there are many options besides learning Scripture to know God and acquire direction for our lives as Christians. Half Time demonstrates the danger of elevating "man's wisdom" above biblical sanctification (an intimate relationship with God) as a means of establishing goals or direction for ones life.

Teachings such as Half Time confuse the process of knowing God's will for our lives. It places action before relationship and puts trust in one's own calculations rather than in God. When we embrace self improvement programs characterized as Christian "teaching", we remain at the mercy of our circumstances. Man's wisdom is limited. By contrast, learning Scripture equips us to operate in the spiritual world. When we are consumed by God's presence in our lives, we are truly free of our circumstances -thereby able to successfully navigate and even minister in any situation. "Success" no longer depends upon implementing a plan that may or may not happen, but is measured by knowing God.

Editorial Review:

Halftime. Time to pause, midway in the game of your life, and consider how to make the transition from professional success to significance. Revised and expanded for a new generation of leaders, Bob Buford’s bestseller shows how you can make the second half of your life even more rewarding than the first.

I thank God for this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am so thankful for this book and the workbook. God has used this book, in my life, to reveal things within me that I did not know were there. I now realize that I went through life constantly protecting myself and functioning in a way that was completely unhealthy. My recommendation, to you, is do not pick up this book, unless you truely desire to be healed from the wounds of your past. Sometimes, before we can be healed, we have to be strong and be willing to face ourselves in entirety. It will take courage and strength. I would also recommend this book for anyone whose spouse or friend has been abused. It will allow a deeper understanding into what they are going through. I also believe that this book/workbook would be helpful to someone who has not been sexually abused, but has maybe been exposed to other types of abuse (mental, verbal, emotional, neglect) in their childhood.

Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book broke open my heart for healing! An incredible writing of truth and got me in touch with my past that I was in denial about and my life today! I recommend it for anyone who is the least bit suspicious of sexual abuse in their past childhood.
