A helpful resource 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Yancey deals with a number of issues vital to the discussion of pain and writes with great sensitivity, insight and clarity. He redefines the nature and purpose of pain, debunks the "health and wealth" theology, addresses the activity of God in pain, how to help people who are experiencing pain and gives lessons we can learn from pain. This is a wonderful resource for anyone going through a painful time or those who work in ministry, counseling, etc. Highly recommended.

Everyone else has said it all 5 out of 5 stars.

Everyone else has said it all about this book. I believe this book is a must for everyone's library. I think Yancey is brillant.

Saving the Best For the End (of the Book and Perhaps Life)... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For most of the book, it is a rather journeyman, though sometimes inspired, look at pain and suffering. Well told, well done, well written, perhaps, but lacking the intensity of thought and insight that have always characterized Philip Yancey....

Then comes the end, where he pulls it all together in Part 5, "How Does Faith Help?" Then Philip Yancey writes like Philip Yancey..sharp, to the point, moving and inspirational.

A comparison might be the Old Testament to the New Testament. The New Testament alone is riveting and powerful, but, taken with the Old Testament, it becomes the Bible, the whole story of God's effort to communicate with man and man's effort to make sense of it. The New Testament is much more meaningful after having read the Old Testament.

It may be the same with this book. The first four parts,"Why Is There Such a Thing as Pain?," "Is Pain a Message from God?," How People Respond to Suffering" and "How CanWe Cope With Pain?" combine to make the fifth and final section so moving and powerful.

All of the parts (listed above)are meaningful and good. We all find ourselves at various points in our lives asking the questions and relating to the points raised in the first four parts, but Part 5 brings it all together and Yancey becomes Yancey again.

Not his best, but certainly worth the read. Certainly!! Especially if you are dealing with, anticipate dealing with or just plain wonder about pain, suffering and the presence/absence of God.

Editorial Review:

Philip Yancey's updating of his modern classic answers questions about how to come to terms with the tough times in your life.

This is an awesome book to give to people before they are married. It takes the false expectations and preconceived ideas out of the picture and replaces them with truth and honesty.

The Gift of Sex: A Guide to Sexual Fulfillment 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A very positive presentation of the marital sexual relationship as a gift from God. It is thorough and addresses details and issues about which most people do not know what to think or even how to go about considering them. It is professional as well as considerate in its presentation. While the authors approach the subject from a Christian perspective, it is not necessary for the reader to embrace this viewpoint in order to find the book truly helpful. If you have not read a book on the marital sexual relationship, you ought to read this one. If you have read other books, I think you will be pleased with this addition. I use this book with couples whom I see for marriage counseling.

Editorial Review:

Clifford and Joyce Penner, clinical therapist and nurse have written a sensitive and forthright guide to understanding sexuality and how it fits into God's design for marriage. This revised and updated version features a new introduction, new illustrations, a section on addictions and the Internet, and a timely discussion on sexually transmitted diseases and their consequences. With the latest information on sexuality and intimacy, this best-selling book is ideal whether you are newlyweds or have been married for many years.

Chapters include:

  • The Physical Dimension
  • The Total Experience
  • Moving Past Sexual Barriers
  • Resolving Difficulties

This book saved my marriage 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

For a christian, it is literally amazing how very far I was from the biblical principles for marriage. This book showed me how to act in accordance with these principles and I found nothing vague about it! It clearly outlined the appropriate behavior for a married christian and I go back to it again and again to remind myself of the good that god has in store for me as a partner in a christian marriage. I continue to buy this book in volume and share it with everyone I know, as my marriage was so close to the edge that I am still in awe of the blessing I've received from this book. Putting biblical principles to practice in your marriage can produce amazing results! May you be as blessed by the biblical wisdom explained in this book as I have been.

This can really hurt a family, REALLY! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is scary bad. Our small group-study at church is going through this, and it's making me sick. The men's-group is rallying around this like it's a miracle answer to all of their family issues, but it's just smoke. The author is NOT teaching relationship skills, but just rules for a plutocratic relationship. There's so much more to being a family leader then just having testicles and a bible.

Point Man By Steve Farrar. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Point Man is a must read for ALL men. It is timeless and to the point. It is a book on not just being a leader, but being a leader of the family. We need to have more men be accountable for their actions. This book will lead you in your roles as a husband and father. It will help you understand just how important you are to the family. Real men read this book.

Editorial Review:

This bestselling classic encourages and equips Christian men to lead their families successfully through hazards and ambushes like divorce, promiscuity, suicide, and drug addiction. Men will find practical insight on topics such as a father's influence, maintaining purity, and husband-and-wife teamwork. In this war, renowned men's author Steve Farrar emphasizes, Jesus Christ is looking for men who will not die, but live for their families.

Editorial Review:

IF CHRIST HAD PRACTICED THE KIND OF LOVE WE ADVOCATE NOWADAYS, HE WOULD HAVE LIVED TO A RIPE OLD AGE.

We've come to view love as being nice. Forgiving and forgetting. Yielding to the desires of others. Yet the kind of love modeled by Jesus Christ has nothing to do with manners or unconditional acceptance. Rather, it is shrewd. Disruptive. Courageous. And, as a result, socially unacceptable.

In Bold Love, Dr. Dan Allender and Dr. Tremper Longman III draw out the aggressive, unrelenting, passionate power of genuine love. Far from helping you "get along" with others, Bold Love introduces the outlandish possibility of making a significant, life-changing impact on family, friends, coworkers-even your enemies.

"Bold love is anything by passive," writes Dr. Allender. "It is unpredictable, cunning, and creative. It is a violation of the natural order of things. In many cases it will unnerve, offend, disturb, or even hurt those who are being loved. But in the end it will also compel them to deal with the internal disease that is robbing them (and others) of true beauty."

So if it feels like you've turned the other cheek so many times your head is spinning, it's probably time to take a second look at your practice of love. Because there's nothing redemptive about a love that just accepts people for who they are.

If you live in fear order this today! 5 out of 5 stars.
50 of 50 people found this review helpful.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have tried a lot of self-help techniques but the ones contained in this book are unlike any I've encountered.

The biggest lesson I got out of this book is that so many of our problems nowadays occur because we had painful experiences earlier in life but instead of facing them and accepting the ramifications - we chose to lie to ourselves instead. Richo explains the most common lies: life is just, suffering is avoidable, things don't change, etc.

I understand from this book that it is much better to just experience those original painful feelings instead of spending your life overanalyzing every minute of every day trying to make the world something it is not.

The key to life. 5 out of 5 stars.
40 of 41 people found this review helpful.

This book simply explains the key to happiness. It is to let go of our fears, which is at the root of unhappiness, hate, aggression, apathy, and everything negative in the world. Once we are able to do that, we can open our hearts and embrace each other with love, respect, empathy, hope and forgiveness. It is a simple idea but something very difficult to do because our fears run very very deep within us all. Once we are able to do this to some extent, we try to help others do the same. It is simply the mission of all of our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. When you think about it, nothing else really matters as much. This is what this book tries to help us understand. It is a wonderful message! In another excellent book called "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato, the author explains how this works in relation to human development and evolution. It shows us how we consciously begin living this life when we are naturally ready for it. These books are absolutely exquisite!

Editorial Review:

Examines the deepest roots of fear and how it limits our ability to act and fulfill our greatest potential.

Misquotes Scripture / Dismisses Psychiatry 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Early in his book, Dr. Welch inaccurately quotes Scripture, rendering 2 Peter 1:3 to say that Scripture gives us all the tools/information/etc. that we need in order to live. Of course, 2 Peter 1:3 says this not about Scripture, but about God.
I approached this book as one schooled in and accepting of Reformed theology. Certainly Dr. Welch does not stray far from the Gospel. But he is dismissive of anything but a proof-text approach to reading Scripture that suggests that any problems a person may have are "worship deficiencies."
This may be true, in a strict sense. If we are really attuned to God's will, we certainly won't face addiction problems. But a more realistic subtitle for the book ought to have been "Here but for the grace of God go I."
Dr. Welch makes several astounding claims in order to advance his model of addiction theory. One of these is that there is no real evidence to suggest that physical withdrawal symptoms can literally overpower a person. Another is that gambling and sex do not prompt any internal physiological response. Any responsible neuroscientist would scoff at this -- our brains are full of chemical charges that dramatically affect our ability to think rationally, and our attitude toward God and other men.
Dr. Welch offers little in the way of practical help for the recovering addict; in fact, one of the reasons he is critical of AA is that AA has become palatable to non-believers. Heaven forbid it!
Dr. Welch advances a model-driven approach that fails to understand the enormity of God's revealed wisdom and how we ought to apply it when struggling with addiction issues or helping a loved one in need.
This book is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Read it critically. I understand I am the first negative reviewer, but my fear is that people get swept away by what they perceive to be a "gospel message" that is in fact little but a model for laying more guilt at the feet of an addict.
Finally, Dr. Welch gives short shrift to the work of the Holy Spirit in even the lives of addicts, and pretends that people suffering in the grip of addiction are far removed from grace. He also makes the decidedly un-Scriptural claim that, if we pray for God to remove any temptation/sin/etc. from our lives, then God will grant that request. But Paul's struggle with the thorn in his flesh stands in direct opposition to this claim.
Jesus Christ's love for addicts goes far beyond what Dr. Welch contemplates in this disappointing book.

Editorial Review:

A worship disorder: this is how Edward T. Welch views addictions. "Will we worship our own desires or will we worship the true God?" With this lens the author discovers far more in Scripture on addictions than passages on drunkenness. There we learn the addict's true condition: like guests at a banquet thrown by "the woman Folly," he is already in the grave (Proverbs 9:13-18). Can we not escape our addictions? If we're willing to follow Jesus, the author says that we have "immense hope: hope in God's forgiving grace, hope in God's love that is faithful even when we are not, and hope that God can give power so that we are no longer mastered by the addiction." Each chapter concludes with "Practical Theology," "As Your Face Your Own Addictions," and "As You Help Someone Else."

This isn't helping... 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Having just finished this book I'm extremely disappointed. I based my decision to buy it off of the many favorable reviews already written. The fact is the book could be done in a single sentence if you removed all of the redundancy and long outdated examples.

Here my shortened version of the book:

Christians need to pursue excellence in the arts and academia.

Now if that cranks your engine, then there's nearly 200 pages worth of the exact same thing in this book. I for one think it was a waste of time and money. Don't believe the reviews. Frankly I think you'd be better served to operate within the spirit of this book by reading something like Wild at Heart.

Roaring Lambs book review 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Roaring Lambs is an inspirational guide to making a cultural difference as a Christian in our world today. I was moved and inspired as an art teacher. It contains questions in the back chapter that make for easy teaching. Armed and motivated for change, I recommend this book to all that teach the arts in every form.

Editorial Review:

In his book and the accompanying discussion guide, Bob Briner issues a clear call for Christians to reclaim culture by joining it rather than running from or boycotting it.

Wonderful, appropriate, practical resource 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

For those of us who have found ourselves separated from our spouse it is a terrible, frustrating, depressing and confusing time. We're married -- but we're not. We're single -- but we're married. We have a spouse -- but not a husband/wife. We can't be a family -- but we can't be a single. And a separation can only go in one of two ways -- reconciliation or divorce. Chapman's book is a terrificly easy and incredibly appropriate read. Having surely counseled dozens of separated couples, he touches on every aspect involved, for both parties, regardless of the offense or the offender, emotions or intentions. For the Christian, it offers great insight in to what God expects of us and how we need to be conducting our lives in this difficult time. I read it, loved it, and am trying to apply the principles he relates as best as I can. I gave it to my wife who I hope will find it as useful and practical as I did. Time will tell. But if it doesn't work, it won't be because I didn't do everything I could do, and this book has helped point me in the right direction. If you are separated and have even the slimmest hope for reconciliation -- BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it.

Editorial Review:

Even when love is lost and hope is gone, God's Word still has the power to heal. Hope for the Separated explains why the biblical ideal for a separated couple is reconciliation. It reveals how to draw on the power of God's Word to heal broken relationships.
