Misleading Title; Weak Information 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 15 people found this review helpful.

For those who choose to put their faith in themselves rather than something "out there," I'd like to suggest a couple of excellent titles that will encourage you to disregard what others say/do and build your self-esteem. My hubsand and I (both in our fifties and self-help, motivational junkies) actually had life-changing experiences with Larry Winget's "Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get A Life" (and yes, Larry believes in God), as well as Randy Gage's "Why You're Dumb, Sick, and Broke." (Randy also has a strong belief system.)

Don't be offended or mislead by the titles. Both men are big-time motivational speakers who really have something to say and who teach you why others want you to buy their opinions . . . and how to build a solid foundation of self-esteem based on your own strengths.

And if you need a solidly-based kick in the derriere, try anything by Tony Robbins. You can't feel bad about yourself listening to or watching Tony.

I hope this helps someone out there . . . .

helpful and readable 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've read a lot of time management books, and this is probably the best so far, as far as readability, good teaching techniques, and useful suggestions. It's written simply but effectively, easy to follow and good suggestions. She starts at the most basic level and explains things that those of us who are time-challenged don't naturally understand, such as when you're doing one thing, you're choosing not to do another, or to get somewhere on time, you have to allow travel time, not leave at the time you're supposed to arrive. There are also a number of other entry-level suggestions such as posting your goals where you will see them. I was very impressed with how well she simplified the concepts and built from the fundamental practices which would give immediate benefits for a small investment of effort, to the details that add polish to a life. In every chapter she gave simultaneous illustrations of how to apply the principles to both office and home to get both under control and save time, and covered everyone from mothers overwhelmed with several preschoolers to both male and female executives. I found that it inspired me to get my desk and files in better order, and I'm picking up on several organizing and planning suggestions.

Bunk and Heresy 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I read this book thirty years ago or so, when as a young Christian I was searching for understanding of myself and others. At the time it helped me face myself and understand some things about my natural strengths and weaknesses. As I studied and grew, I came to understand the ancient and somewhat occult origins of his theory, and had to set it aside as heresy.

A thorough treatment of the occult and heretical origin of his theory is available in book form from PsychoHeresy Awareness Ministries. They have a web site with specific information about this book, one of many that add to scriptural teachings about personality and motivation.

I found Kiersey's work on personality type to be more useful to me. Also I have taken a Myers-Briggs test administered by my church and obtained very useful insights. The leadership of my church treats personality variations as phenomena and does not make associations between personality traits and elements of the sinful natute, as LaHaye does, because they think these associations are heresy, that is, a teaching that does not derive from scripture.

LaHaye's system is too crude to be useful for anything except perhaps to stir debate.

I hope Christian home schoolers are not using this book. There are better resources.

Editorial Review:

A superb treatment of the basic human temperaments and how God can use them, now revised with new chapters and questions for group study.

Balm and So True 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

When life deals a severe blow, it's one thing to hear "you'll be all right," but another to hear "you'll be blessed." "The Blessings of Brokenness" is a reassuring blend of grace and truth that ministers both to the emotions and to the mind. Stanley shares reasons, obstacles, processes, and blessings of being broken. While offering truth to hold on to, the book has the relational tone of a compassionate friend, rather than a detached, academic counseling guide. It's small size, substance, and tone make the book a good choice for giving to those in pain, including grief. (It's also available in audio, a format that could be useful, since sometimes reading even a small book might be too much exertion for a friend who feels like [...], pierced, pummeled, shattered, or just plain world-weary.)

Good Deals for your Money 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a nice little book to share with people in your life that are positive and uplifting influences. I bought several copies to give to special friends as gifts. I received a copy as a gift myself and after reading it I wanted to "pay it forward" to others.

Balcony People 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is excellent for affirmation. It could well be used as a bible study should one desire to do so. Great book!

affirmation is a great thing 5 out of 5 stars.

Balcony People is about the people in your life that lift you up. There are 2 different kinds of people: Balcony People and Basement People. You can guess what Basement People do to you - they pull you down, cut you down, and cause heartache. This book is about Balcony People and how they are a blessing in our lives, and how we need to let the people who ARE our Balcony People know that they are Balcony People.

Editorial Review:

Some people are in the "balcony" of your life, cheering you on, energizing you with their affirmation. Others are in your "basement" doing exactly the opposite. This book is about being a "balcony person."

Reader, medical professional 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book that is easy to read, and offers solutions and helpful techniques for almost any adult. You almost always deal with at least one "screwed up person" every day. I have recommended it to patients who have benefitted from it.

She does an excellent job of explaining forgiveness, and moving forward.

Worth every penny.

Editorial Review:

People approach Elizabeth Brown after her seminars with the same basic question: How do I deal with someone who is so "screwed-up"? If you had to live with my husband . . . If you had to work with my boss . . .

Unfortunately, the world is full of screwed-up people, but your world no longer has to revolve around them, writes Brown. With brilliant insights and a keen sense of humor, this trusted author and sought-after speaker shows readers how to:

stop the power of whatever is eating them alive
productively respond when confronted
remain poised and in control when everyone around them loses it win fairly in unfair battles
let go of what has been, or what they wish would be, and live triumphantly now

Dozens of real-life success stories, brief diagnostic tests, and practical tools are included to help readers assess their own situation and gain confidence to change self-defeating behaviors.

In the top 3, most profound books I have ever read 5 out of 5 stars.
48 of 50 people found this review helpful.

As a Christian for 30 years and an evangelical pastor/US Army chaplain and licensed Therapist, I have read lots and lots and lots of books. This book by Dan is truely one of the most profound books that I have ever read. It is worth reading and re-reading. His stories and narrative portions put images and real-life flesh and blood on our living out the true power of the Gospel and Christ's love into our own real-life worlds.

Editorial Review:

Don't Waste Your Pain

None of us escapes the heartache and disappointments of life. To live is to hurt, and we all have the wounds to prove it. Regardless of how we've been hurt, we all face a common question: What should we do with our pain? Should we stoically ignore it? Should we just "get over it"? Should we optimistically hope that everything will work out in the end?

If we fail to respond appropriately to the wounds that life and relationships inflict, our pain will be wasted; it will numb us or destroy us. But suffering doesn't have to mangle our hearts and rob us of joy. It can, instead, lead us to life--if we know the path to healing.

Healing is not the resolution of our past; it is the use of our past to draw us into deeper relationship with God and his purposes for our lives. If you're ready to shape a future characterized by love, service, and joy, now is the time to step out onto The Healing Path.

I thank God for this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am so thankful for this book and the workbook. God has used this book, in my life, to reveal things within me that I did not know were there. I now realize that I went through life constantly protecting myself and functioning in a way that was completely unhealthy. My recommendation, to you, is do not pick up this book, unless you truely desire to be healed from the wounds of your past. Sometimes, before we can be healed, we have to be strong and be willing to face ourselves in entirety. It will take courage and strength. I would also recommend this book for anyone whose spouse or friend has been abused. It will allow a deeper understanding into what they are going through. I also believe that this book/workbook would be helpful to someone who has not been sexually abused, but has maybe been exposed to other types of abuse (mental, verbal, emotional, neglect) in their childhood.

Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book broke open my heart for healing! An incredible writing of truth and got me in touch with my past that I was in denial about and my life today! I recommend it for anyone who is the least bit suspicious of sexual abuse in their past childhood.

I'm not engaged but... 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I'm not engaged, or even close to being engaged. Nonetheless, I found the Frylings' handbook refreshing and honest about communications and expectations among couples. I bought it on a whim, having heard that the Frylings do not sugarcoat reality in their presentation. My own relationship was floundering and I needed direction. I wish I had bought it several months earlier!

While written from a evangelical Christian perspective, it has that special universality of truth for every couple looking to understand and to communicate with their mate or future spouse.

I can see it being read alone for personal growth, with your fiance, or even the two of you with a counselor or older, wiser friend. Better yet, try going through this (be ready to be challenged!) with a married couple who seems to "have it together."

Catholics will love it as an addition to their time spent in pre-marital counseling. You're best to buy two copies, with each person reading a portion (set up in topical chapters with discussion questions).

Though I'm one who has never been married, I believe it would be great for a couple married several years as well, helping re-ground your marriage. Don't think of this as just a tool to get your spouse to open up, but as a mutual opportunity to renew the love which drew you to marriage in the first place.

This book is no panacea, but it can assist a new beginning, or a careful grounding for a future marriage.

For you single guys (and gals) get a copy of "A Handbook for Engaged Couples" and read it. It'll help you (and me) relate to anyone you might consider saying "I do" with on an altar someday.

(post-script: I have since been engaged, and can further attest to this book's usefulness, having been happily married now since 2004).
