In this book, this much-published author sculpts--as carefully as if with chisel--prayers on behalf of those who are people of privilege and entitlement--the haves--at an urgent moment in our society. The privileged face, on the one hand, the seduction of denial or, on the other, the temptation of despair. These prayers of wisdom and prophetic power remind us that when things go wrong , when we are afraid , and when we feel prodded by those who lack voice, there is a conversation we can have--a conversation situated amid the promises and commands of God.

Walter Brueggemann's Prayers for a Privileged People attempts to bridge the world we live in with the retreat we have in prayer life. In this sense, he looks as much to the newspaper as the Bible in choosing his prayer objects. While this approach may work in a collect, I found these prayers too impersonal for personal prayer.

Brueggemann's prayers are generally a page or two in lengthen and he organizes them into six sections: 1. Opening our hearts: The Collect, 2. Well-arranged lives, 3. The world in not safe, 4. Brick production, 5. Can we risk it? and 6. Choirs of hope. The topics he chooses are timely (e.g. Super Bowl Sunday, p. 25) and provocative (e.g. On Controlling Our Borders, p. 95).

I approached this book as a devotional. For me, devotional prayer follows a certain rhythm. My selfish heart needs to be warmed up. The ACTS format works to warm up the heart and push it into more generous realms known only to the head. By eschewing structure and rhythm Brueggemann leaves the supplicant to feel guilty and inadequate. While this may be a legitimate objective in a congregational prayer, where the typical worship service frames the collect with other forms of worship and prayer, the objective of personal prayer is more normally to build relationship with God and foster spiritual growth.

This book is an exciting story of the marvelous events that happened when Heidi and Roland Baker committed their lives to dependance upon God and sought to love Jesus Christ to the fullest. It also is a window into seeing the intense price paid by these 2 committed members of the Family of God. God's character of healing, provision and liberty from evil spirits is clearly revealed in their persons and work. It challenged me out of my comfortable assumption that I knew about love and propeled me into confrontation with my deep hunger for more intimacy with Jesus Christ and to see God's character demonstrated in my life with signs and wonders. The book is a record from various blogs and diary like entries that testify to the immediacy and transparency of their ongoing ministry of dependance and service. It is compelling in it's testimony to the aunthentic character of life sold out to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Hiding From Love: The Book that Helped Change My Life 5 out of 5 stars.

Hiding From Love provided me with the insight I needed to understand all the why's I had dealt with my entire life. At the age of 45 I was finally able to understand why I had felt so "unlovable", "insecure" and "stupid" as a child, that there were very valid reasons for my thinking that way about myself that were NOT MY FAULT. I began to see myself with confidence, and worthy of being loved, for the first time in my life! I would recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone struggling with childhood abandonment issues.

I have read almost everything I can get my hands on to help me understand myself, my ex, and why it all went wrong. I finally feel like I understand why we have the defenses we do, and why it's so hard to snap out of it. The author combines years of solid experience working with people in real clinical situations with inspirational insight into issues of the heart in light of the Biblical understanding God gives us about how He created us. This book was rare for me, because it is solid and specific about why we are afraid to reach out and grasp what we most need to truly heal. I found it especially different because it addresses the problem of well-meaning Christians who come across as judgemental when they are really trying to be loving and helpful, as well as the tendency sometimes in counseling to provide acceptance and safety without the truth and responsiblity we need to grasp the power to actually change. It is refreshing because it is solid, specific, and treats us as complex, wonderful but fallable children of God who are hurting and so to protect ourselves from further injury we hide, afraid to reach out and try again. But it is not a how-to formula book so much as a scriptural guidebook to see how God made us and how he heals us. This book is not just the same old same old. For me, this book was tremendously important for unlocking hurts and helping me understand. It's not as easily readable as some of his other books like Changes that Heal, Boundaries, or Safe People, but I think it builds on the others and goes deeper. It's about exactly what it says it is, why we hide from love and how to safely come out of our fears and become who we were created to be.

This is the second book by Sarah Young that I have read and this book is equally as good as the first. I was delighted to hear/see that she had written another and that it was available on Amazon.com, where I now do most of my buying. The passages are short and sweet but very insightful and provide the reader with sustanance for a full day. I ended up ordering 7 books and gave them to all my friends. They, too, are thrilled with this book.

Dutch Sheets book, "Intercessory Prayer" is a prayer resource worthy of many reads. It is full of thought provoking statements, and will encourage young and old prayer warriors alike. It is especially encouraging for those wanting to learn more about intercession. Sheet's really connects with the reader which makes the book an easy read.This book not only instructs, it helps the reader to apply it's contents and go deeper with God.
