Heart-Pounding Murder Mystery

Involved in a tragic accident under suspicious circumstances, award-winning journalist Jake Woods teams with detective Ollie Chandler to uncover the truth. This alluring repackage of the R andy Alcorn bestseller finds Jake drawing upon all his resources in an ever-intensifying, dangerous murder investigation. Unaware of the imminent threat to his own life, Jake struggles for answers to the mystery at hand and is plunged into a deeper search for the meaning of his own existence.

His Body Hung Suspended Between Two Friends--His Soul Between Two Worlds

Doc’s shoulder jammed into Jake as he swerved the Suburban sharply to the right, cut between a telephone pole and a billboard, then careened into a ten-foot high embankment. Sometime between the sound of Doc’s last cry and the sickening crunch of bent metal from the car’s first roll, Jake lost consciousness. The last sensation he felt was that of being crushed between the two men he had known since childhood…

When tragedy strikes those closest to him, award-winning journalist Jake Woods must draw upon all his resources to uncover the truth about their suspicious accident. Soon he finds himself swept up in a murder investigation that is both complex and dangerous. Unaware of the threat to his own life, Jake is drawn in deeper and deeper as he desperately searches for the answers to the immediate mystery at hand and—ultimately—the deeper meaning of his own existence.

Deadline is a dramatic and vivid novel of substance, filled with hope and perspective for every reader who longs to feel purpose in life.

Story Behind the Book

Deadline is Randy Alcorn ’s first novel, which stayed on the bestseller’s list for thirty-six months. A thorough researcher, Randy spent time with Portland homicide detectives and columnists at the Oregonian, as well as observing editorial meetings at the Indianapolis Star so he could accurately create the novel’s murder-mystery storyline, setting, and characters. Randy also creatively portrays characters who have died and gone to heaven, where they view events happening on earth.

Another intriguing book from the wild imagination of Ted Dekker 5 out of 5 stars.

I first was introduced to Ted Dekker's writing with "Blink", and soon followed that up with the Circle Trilogy. I was almost immediately hooked. When I heard that there was a book which gave more information about things in the Circle trilogy, I immediately knew I wanted it. And so I bought "Showdown" and "Saint", books 1 and 2 in the Paradise Series.
After reading "Showdown", I am definitely not disappointed. Ted has a manner of writing that few people can dislike. His main put-off would probably be his strange story lines, but I personally enjoy them. Plus, Ted has a way of convincing you to believe his story lines, partly by having the characters in his story stuggling to accept it themselves. As Ted's character(s) become convinced about the happenings, so do you, the reader.
In "Showdown", Ted has a way of pulling you along and keeping you guessing throughout the story. He gives you just enough information to keep you reading and to keep you guessing about certain parts of the story. Then, when you finally think you understand what is going on, he shows you that you are wrong, but usually he still does not tell you exactly what is going on. He sprinkled plenty of surprises into the story, yet saved the best surprises for last. At the same time, some of the most predictable and somewhat sappy parts were also near the end. I personally thought that the part about the second Book entry gave "Showdown" too much of a "everything is good in the end" feel. At the same time, without that addition, there could not have been the spiritual parallel from Samuel's fate.
Also, I have a small problem with Billy's entry in the Book about Thomas Hunter. How could it have been entered in the Book after the story in the Circle Trilogy and yet still cause that story? Apparently Ted wants us to believe that the Books themselves can change the history found in them. In some ways, this seems like just a poor attempt to explain the mystery of Thomas in the Black Forest (the Circle Trilogy story), but in other ways it sounds reasonable. I will let you decide for yourself.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this book. It fulfilled its purpose by explaining a few thing from the Circle Trilogy, plus it is a very good read. I found it to be a very interesting read and hard to put down. I would definitely recommend this book, however I would also recommend that you read the Circle Trilogy first. However, if you do this, I have to warn you that you might become hooked on Ted Dekker's writing. I certainly did. Read and enjoy.

Editorial Review:

Tim LaHaye’s most exciting series ever, Babylon Rising, continues with this explosive new installment, including more revelations than ever before. In The Edge of Darkness, LaHaye reveals the meaning behind some of the most carefully guarded Biblical prophecies to expose a conspiracy with terrifying consequences for our modern world.

This time Michael Murphy sets off in search of the Lost Temple of Dagon and the dark secrets of the strange god once worshipped by the ancient Philistines. His quest will lead to a final confrontation with an old enemy and uncover one of the Bible’s most feared warnings–a prophecy of false miracles, false messiahs, and ultimate evil that will be fulfilled in our time...and that not even Murphy can stop once it’s begun.

Once again Tim LaHaye combines his unmatched insight into Biblical prophecy with his unique skills as a master storyteller to deliver a suspense thriller of nonstop action with a thought-provoking message for our troubled times.

It may make a believer out of you 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Demonologist gets off to a rough start, in terms of suspension of disbelief. "Non-fiction" and "being attacked by evil black vortexes" don't exactly go hand-in-hand. But there is a propulsive nature to this text, and it gets its fuel from the arrestingly sober assessment of bizarre and frightening things, rather than a "potboiler" narrative flow.

Ultimately, this is not something trashy that you might find at an airport bookstore. It's a long and fascinating Q&A session with the Warrens, who are one of the most intriguing couples of the past half-century. By the time you get to the end of this book, you will understand why. Because they have not only encountered strange and evil things, but they have endured the sometimes murderous interest of the demonic, completely outside of their casework, if their accounts are to be believed. And if they are, then Ed and Lorraine are some truly sturdy people who have an abiding respect for God and a genuine and deep interest in the welfare of people who have tripped into dangerous things.

For me, the most fascinating aspect of this book is the uplifting message at the end, about creating a positive environment around yourself and your family. Although they are devout Catholics, they frame this message outside of theology. Sadly, Ed Warren passed away a few years ago, at the ripe old age of 80, but Lorraine and this book live on, and I find myself wishing there had been some sequels in the intervening years. Truly engrossing stuff.

Editorial Review:

If you think ghosts are only responsible for hauntings, think again. The Demonologist reveals the grave religious process behind supernatural events and how it can happen to you. Over twenty years in print, here is the original uncut version of this classic text. Illustrated with photographs of phenomena in progress, every sentence in the book is true. Used as a text in seminaries and classrooms, this is one book you canÂ't put down.

So, where's the whodunit? 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book reminds me of the line "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out." Apparently, there's a murder mystery to be found somewhere between the cover's 500 pages. The murder whodunit is actually a pretty good one if you can stand wading through the many, many -- did I say many -- arduous pages of jumbo that goes nowhere. I barely give this two stars because I realize the author does a nice job putting together the numerous philosophical conversations. My advice is to skip this book unless you're looking for an academic read and discussion.

Way over rated 2 out of 5 stars.

As a mystery this book was just OK, if even that. I enjoyed Foucault's Pendulum because with that book you learned a lesson that I often think about. I was expecting something similar with this book but all I got was a book that was a pain in the rear to read and did not offer anything of substance for the effort.

Editorial Review:

James Patterson's Cradle and All pits the intensity of faith against the certainties of science within an arena of Millennial tensions. A reworking of his 1980 apocalyptic thriller Virgin, this remodeled version boasts a genuinely unnerving premise, amplified with Patterson's fast-paced, uncluttered prose.

In the midst of a series of unexplained plagues and famines, two teenage girls are heavily pregnant, despite being virgins. According to the sacred prophecies of Fatima, one will bear the child of Christ and the other, the spawn of Satan. Both Anne Fitzgerald, a former nun turned private detective, and the Vatican's Father Rosetti are sent to investigate. But which girl carries which child? The possibility of a miracle will be tainted with great suffering before the awful, unexpected truth is revealed. As the action moves speedily from the hallowed halls of the Vatican to the media frenzy of America to the small-town hysteria of Ireland, Patterson divines considerable suspense from the novel's central premise, tackling issues of faith with admirable aplomb:

"All over the world, after all the years of difficulty, decades of diminishing spirituality, so many people still believed.... Everywhere, people talked of the Apocalypse, perhaps the end of the world. Which explained why so many people were suddenly going to church."

A relentless pace culminating in a superbly twisted ending won't disappoint Patterson's faithful followers, and may even convert some new members. --Danny Graydon

Excellent 10 out of 10! This author is fabulous! I have read many of her books and have not read 1 I did not like.

Wonderful uplifting read 4 out of 5 stars.

Kingsbury handles a very difficult story line with grace, offering testimony of God's amazing love even through horrible times. The author says the story was given to her during the 911 attacks, and this book will help us all heal. Difficult to put down, this beautiful story lifts spirits out of the ashes of that dreadful day and its aftermath and into hope for times to come.

Soo good! 5 out of 5 stars.

I couldn't put this book down and I have two small children to care for! I was able to stop only towards the end because I was crying so hard and couldn't see the pages. After a short break, I went back to it. The book showed how one person's life can have a huge impact on other people. It was inspiring!

"Never break the circle."

For two realities, time is running out.

In one world, a lethal virus threatens to destroy all life as scientists and governments scramble to find an antidote. In the other, a forbidden love could forever destroy the ragtag resistance known as The Circle.

Thomas can bridge both worlds, but he is quickly realizing that he may not be able to save either.

In the mind-bending conclusion to the Circle trilogy, Thomas must find a way to rewrite history as he navigates a whirlwind of emotions and events surrounding a pending apocalypse.

The fate of two worlds comes down to one man's choice--and it is a most unlikely choice indeed.

Life. Death. Love. Nothing is as it seems. Yet all will forever be transformed by the decisions of one man in the final hours of the Great Pursuit.

Spellbinding and interesting! Safe to listen to with older kids in the car too! Love the fact that the family is living out their faith and that the daughter struggles with being bound to a non-believer. We couldn't wait to get back in the car and hear what was next. (Caution: a few scenes have drug use, gun use)

Terrific 5 out of 5 stars.

Continuation of a spellbinding story 5 out of 5 stars.

In this second book Terri Blackstock continues her story of a world thrown into chaos by way of a "starpluse" which has rendered the use of all modern technology useless. Terri Blackstock explores how our world might "look" if this were to happen, how some grow in their faith, love, and selflessness while others grow in their selfishness, sin, and evil. A griping story of orphaned children in a world devoid of "services" to deal with such an occurance and a family willing to sacrifice everything to help these children, their community, and to serve God in any way he asks.

A Must Read - A Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I came across this book during my study of the Quran, in Chapter 9 verse 30, where it is mentioned that `The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of God and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of god." Such are the baseless things they utter with their tongues, following in the footsteps of the former unbelievers.' This led to my research on the `former' prevailing religion at the time which was Osiris-Dionysus. I thank the authors from the bottom of my heart on writing such an insightful book, right on the subject. Although some of the issues in the book are very controversial and quite debatable but still the notes and references provided by the authors are plausible. I would recommend this book to everyone, a book one should always have in their personal library.

Editorial Review:

“Whether you conclude that this book is the most alarming heresy of the millennium or the mother of all revelations, The Jesus Mysteries deserves to be read.”
-- Fort Worth Star -Telegram

What if . . .
* there were absolutely no evidence for the existence of a historical Jesus?
* for thousands of years Pagans had also followed a Son of God?
* this Pagan savior was also born of a virgin on the twenty-fifth of December before three shepherds, turned water into wine at a wedding, died and was resurrected, and offered his body and blood as a Holy Communion?
* these Pagan myths had been rewritten as the gospel of Jesus Christ?
* the earliest Gnostic Christians knew that the Jesus story was a myth?
* Christianity turned out to be a continuation of Paganism by another name?
