Christianity Vol. 2 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While Chesterton dedicates this book to his mother, he claims that George Slythe Street is the books inspiration and creator. That is, G.S. Street was one of many critics to present an opinion about Chesterton's Heretics, and happened to have presented the opinion to which Chesterton responded. When on the first page Chesterton states that it was incautious of Street to provoke an individual that is all too ready to write books, and in the final sentence of the first chapter claims that he would write Street another book if he needed clarification with regard to a topic only touched upon by Chesterton, it quickly becomes clear that Orthodoxy is yet another shining example of Chesterton's mirth applied to frequently solemn subject matter. Orthodoxy, as Chesterton appears to agree, is, however, the appropriate conclusion to the work he began with Heretics. If Heretics presented all that is wrong, Orthodoxy can rightly be seen as presenting the standard by which Chesterton deemed such philosophies heretical. To truly appreciate either of the aforementioned titles, both should be read as if they were a singular work.

In Orthodoxy, Chesterton does justify his position maintained throughout Heretics in a manner as uniform as he might have been able to conjure. Throughout the work Chesterton utilizes his own experiences and thoughts to illustrate and, perhaps, demonstrate his seemingly inevitable arrive at truth. At times it almost seems as if Chesterton slips into irrelevant stream of thought tangents but never fails to reconcile his intended point, illuminating the necessity of what might have otherwise seemed entirely unnecessary. In fact, Chesterton masterfully builds what he claimed is not a properly thorough defense of Christianity into what might be one of the most poignant apologetic works ever. He does so in a way that makes Orthodoxy read like a suspense novel in that the entire effort bears its timeless fruit in the last few pages, if not in the last sentence, after supplying almost innumerable pieces of information that appeared just unrelated enough to ensure that the final piece would act as a blazing beacon of a keystone. While Chesterton might have failed to present that tangible evidence, that scientific process by which the claims of Christianity can be undoubtedly proved, he clearly and boldly presented that proof which every Christian exists for; the proof that every Christian can verify, albeit not as gracefully. While Chesterton's The Everlasting Man might be the work that he is best known for, Heretics and, especially, Orthodoxy are magnificent demonstrations of Chesterton's ability to cast light on the eventual obvious reality and significance of everything.

Editorial Review:

Gilbert Keith Chesterton called himself a "pagan" at 12 and was agnostic by 16. He then developed a personal, positive philosophy that turned out to be orthodox Christianity. First published in 1908, when he was 35, this intellectual and spiritual autobiography combines simplicity with subtlety in a model apologetic for those who face the same materialism and anti-supernaturalism as the "man at war with his times".

Another intriguing book from the wild imagination of Ted Dekker 5 out of 5 stars.

I first was introduced to Ted Dekker's writing with "Blink", and soon followed that up with the Circle Trilogy. I was almost immediately hooked. When I heard that there was a book which gave more information about things in the Circle trilogy, I immediately knew I wanted it. And so I bought "Showdown" and "Saint", books 1 and 2 in the Paradise Series.
After reading "Showdown", I am definitely not disappointed. Ted has a manner of writing that few people can dislike. His main put-off would probably be his strange story lines, but I personally enjoy them. Plus, Ted has a way of convincing you to believe his story lines, partly by having the characters in his story stuggling to accept it themselves. As Ted's character(s) become convinced about the happenings, so do you, the reader.
In "Showdown", Ted has a way of pulling you along and keeping you guessing throughout the story. He gives you just enough information to keep you reading and to keep you guessing about certain parts of the story. Then, when you finally think you understand what is going on, he shows you that you are wrong, but usually he still does not tell you exactly what is going on. He sprinkled plenty of surprises into the story, yet saved the best surprises for last. At the same time, some of the most predictable and somewhat sappy parts were also near the end. I personally thought that the part about the second Book entry gave "Showdown" too much of a "everything is good in the end" feel. At the same time, without that addition, there could not have been the spiritual parallel from Samuel's fate.
Also, I have a small problem with Billy's entry in the Book about Thomas Hunter. How could it have been entered in the Book after the story in the Circle Trilogy and yet still cause that story? Apparently Ted wants us to believe that the Books themselves can change the history found in them. In some ways, this seems like just a poor attempt to explain the mystery of Thomas in the Black Forest (the Circle Trilogy story), but in other ways it sounds reasonable. I will let you decide for yourself.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this book. It fulfilled its purpose by explaining a few thing from the Circle Trilogy, plus it is a very good read. I found it to be a very interesting read and hard to put down. I would definitely recommend this book, however I would also recommend that you read the Circle Trilogy first. However, if you do this, I have to warn you that you might become hooked on Ted Dekker's writing. I certainly did. Read and enjoy.

Classic! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a religious fiction classic! The story is gripping (though a little slow to start), and a very interesting take on the unseen world around us.

Pretty Good 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is pretty good. The author has a very nice, readable style and good storytelling abilities. The book is somewhat long, but fast-paced. It would probably offend non-Christians (and even some Christians, for that matter) but if it is accepted as an entertaining work of fiction rather than a theological treatise to be analyzed, that shouldn't be too much of a big deal. Also, the book is "clean:" it's not full of profanity and perversion. However, the depictions of angels and demons are a little bit corny, for lack of a better word.

Brief summary: A big-city editor moves to a small town and begins to develop problems with his wife and college-aged daughter. He develops a close friendship with one of his reporters, whose sister died under mysterious circumstances. The two of them begin to discover that there is an evil occult-like conspiracy at work in their town. At the same time, the local pastor and his wife are discovering the same thing. These main characters get into all sorts of trouble while searching for the truth and trying to decide what to do about what they learn. In the end, of course, the good guys win. The reporter gets some closure and the editor reconciles with his wife and his daughter, who was nearly killed by the bad guys, and they all decide to develop a closer relationship with God, and all the demons are expelled.

Editorial Review:

Ashton is just a typical small town. But when a skeptical reporter and a pastor begin to compare notes, they suddenly find themselves fighting a hideous plot to subjugate the townspeople--and eventually the entire human race. A riveting thriller, This Present Darkness offers a fascinating glimpse into the unseen world of spiritual warfare.

Another book by Dennis Lahane - ended up buying all I didn't have so that I can share with a friend of mine. The author takes you right to the Boston area and I stayed there until I finished the entire book.
Bookseller service again was excellent.

Editorial Review:

Dying billionaire Trevor Stone hires Boston private detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro to find his missing daughter. Grief-stricken over the death of her mother and the impending death of her father, Desiree Stone has been missing for three weeks. So has the first investigator hired to find her: Jay Becker, Patrick's mentor. As Patrick and Angie begin their search, they are led down a path of half-truths and corruption into a world in which a support group may be fronting for a dangerous cult; a high-tech investigations firm may be covering up lethal crimes; and a stolen cache of millions in illegal funds may be tied to both disappearances and a tanker full of heroin.

Editorial Review:

Greg Iles's novels have been praised for their unusual depth of characterization and complexity of plot, and The Quiet Game was no exception. Reviewers called it "beautifully crafted" (The Providence Sunday Journal), "heartbreakingly honest" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), and simply "a grand thriller with a wonderful Southern seasoning" (The Orange County Register). In 24 Hours, Iles takes readers on a daringly executed roller-coaster ride with enough twists and surprises to last a lifetime.

24 Hours begins with the perfect family. On the perfect night. About to become trapped in the perfect crime. Will Jennings is a successful young doctor in Jackson, Mississippi, with a thriving practice, a beautiful wife, and a five-year-old daughter he loves beyond measure. But Will and his family are being watched by a con man and psychopath who may be a genius. A man who has crafted the unbeatable crime. A man who has never been caught and whose victims have never talked to the police. A man whose life's work strikes at the heart of every family's unspoken fear: the unstoppable kidnapping.

But this man has never met the likes of Will and Karen Jennings.

"Here is a major talent strutting his considerable stuff."-The Denver Post (review of The Quiet Game)

I really like Patricia Cornwell. I have read all of her novels and while this is not the best of the best it is still good. I read this about four years ago and from time to time it draws me back to it. I think that Ms. Cornwell's research into the subject matter that she writes about is fantastic. I can visualize her words as I read and those are the books that I like most. I will continue to be a fan and I'm waiting for the new release next month!

Summerhill Secrets is a super novel about a 15 yr. old girl, Merry, who follow's God's law and grows as a teenage Christian. The 5 stories in this book are very well written and interesting. This book was a quick read, but still awesome and I learned a lot about the Amish too. Have fun with Merry as she experiences everyday things teenagers can experience today. Summerhill Secrets by Beverly Lewis is definitley a 5 star, must read, book for any Christian teen.

Editorial Review:

In Ted Bell’s scorching follow-up to his New York Times bestseller Assassin, intrepid intelligence operative Alex Hawke must thwart a secret, deadly alliance between China and France before they annihilate everything and everyone in their headlong rush toward world domination.

Aboard the Star of Shanghai in the south of France, an American spy is held captive. He possesses vital, explosive intelligence linking two nations and one horrifying plot. If he is not rescued, he faces certain torture and inevitable death. Nearby, in a seaside hotel, a man still haunted by the loss of his wife two years earlier finds comfort in the arms of a beautiful Chinese actress - but is she to be trusted? So begins Pirate, an electrifying thriller marking the return of international counterterrorist Alex Hawke.

In Paris, a ruthless descendant of Napoleon has risen to power, hell-bent on restoring France’s former glory. His fiery ambitions are cynically stoked by a coterie of cold-blooded Mandarins, plotting behind the gates of Beijing’s Forbidden City. Cloaked in secrecy, this unholy alliance devises a twisted global plan, backed by China’s growing nuclear arsenal, that will send America and the world to the brink of a gut-wrenching showdown.

With the aid of his old friend and former Navy SEAL, Stokely Jones, Hawke sets out to investigate the deadly connections that bind the French-Chinese axis. Together, they discover that a powerful German industrialist may hold the key, somewhere inside the walls of his Bavarian mountain lair. Meanwhile, clues to an old and gruesome murder in Paris lead to New York City, where horrifying evidence could finally bring a madman to his knees. In the end, as American and British forces prepare to defend a sovereign and oil-rich Gulf nation against unwilling occupation, the terror is all too real. The world is once more balanced on the knife-edge of a full-blown nuclear confrontation.

Hawke must once more prepare to hurl himself deep into the nightmare visions of madmen. He must garner every ounce of strength, courage, and useful pain from his past. He must defeat this enemy or else forfeit the lives of untold thousands, including his own, to an axis of evil no historian could have ever predicted.

Packed with unrelenting action, glamour, and high style, and featuring the spectacular Alex Hawke, who time and again transports readers to the edge of danger, Pirate is a spellbinding thriller. Be prepared for Alex Hawke’s most daunting and heart-pounding mission yet. Here is an author who gets you in the palm of his hand . . . and then clenches his fist!
