Not great 2 out of 5 stars.

After reading the first couple of chapters of this book, I lost interest, too wordy. Took too long to get to the missing girl. Too descriptive in many pages, gets boring. The very end of the book picked up when we learn where the child is. If it wasn't so descriptive maybe it would have been a faster read. Maybe too many characters.

Editorial Review:

Boston PIs Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro have been hired to find a six-year-old girl who vanished from her home without a trace. Despite enormous public attention, extensive news coverage, and dogged police work, the investigation has gone nowhere. But it's a case rife with sinister circumstances: a strangely indifferent mother, a pedophile couple, a bizarre subculture of homeless parents, and a shadowy police unit with a covert agenda and no qualms about enforcing it.

When a second child disappears, the sleuths face a local media more interested in sensationalizing the abductions than solving them, a police force seething with lethal secrets, and a faceless power determined to keep the kids lost forever. Caught in a deadly tangle of lies and betrayal, Patrick and Angie must confront the horror of what the world can inflict on its children in order to unravel a riddle that's anything but child's play.

This Elvis Cole Mystery is a bit on the Silly Side 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Robert Crais is considered one of the best crime fiction writers working today, and I can understand why. He writes in a crisp, entertaining style that keeps me turning the pages. Crais is best known for his "Elvis Cole" series about a private detective in LA, and I'm currently reading the series in order. SUNSET EXPRESS is the sixth book in the series, and it's just an okay read.

SUNSET EXPRESS is a thinly veiled critique of the OJ Simpson trial and verdict, and how a celebrity defendant can manipulate the justice system. In this novel, Cole is hired by a prominent defense attorney who is defending a wealthy restaurenteur accused of murder. Within days, Cole uncovers evidence that could break the case and exculpate the restauranteur. But is the evidence legitimate, or is Cole just a pawn in some larger scheme to hide the truth?

This novel is entertaining enough, but I found some of the twists to be unbeleivable and over-the-top. Crais's major weakness as an author is his tendency to rely on Hollywood-esque plotlines that have little basis in reality. Of course, a novel doesn't have to be realistic to be entertaining, but the cartoonish quality of this book's storyline robs it of any strong emotional punch in the end.

I enjoyed SUNSET EXPRESS well enough, but I think Crais has done better, with earlier Cole novels such as LULLABY TOWN, FREEFALL and VOODOO RIVER.

Editorial Review:

Elvis Cole, wisecracking private eye, finds himself embroiled in a controversial LA murder case. A wealthy WASP entrepreneur appears to have murdered his wife. A hot-shot defense attorney takes the case and hires Elvis to find proof that the L.A. detective - rumored to be dirty - fooled around with the evidence. But as Elvis investigates, he becomes more suspicious of the media-loving lawyer than the cops. With sidekick Joe Pike and girlfriend Lucy Chenier in tow, Elvis carries the day.

A good read 3 out of 5 stars.

This was very readable and reasonably entertaining, though I wouldn't consider it to be the among the better of their books.

JUST OK 3 out of 5 stars.

Having read the Relic and Riptide, I was expected another fun fast pace read. It started out well but then went downhill from there. The last 1/3 of the book was a total drag. I guess every author(s) has some off books and I think this one was it.

Editorial Review:

Guy Carson is a brilliant scientist at GeneDyne, one of the world's foremost biochemical companies. When he is transferred to Mount Dragon, GeneDyne's high-security genetic engineering lab, his good fortune seems too good to be true.

Carson soon finds that it is. He learns that GeneDyne geneticists are tinkering with a common virus with an eye on the enormous profit to be had from a cure for the flu. Their cure involves permanently altering DNA in humans, and Carson's job is to stabilize the virus. But Carson starts to wonder if this is justifiable, even for the most noble medical cause. Altering genes is a risky job, and the possibility of creating another killer virus is very real. What's more, Mount Dragon harbors another secret that puts the world at horrifying risk.

perfect for a long train ride! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I read this book on a long train ride and I enjoyed it. I find it very odd that this was the first book I ever figured out the ending to though. (the other odd part is that the second book I figured out was Murder of Rodger Ackroyd but the rest of the books I couldn't figure out) So my point is, I don't know if it's easy to figure out or if I just had a lucky guess, but either way it's worth the read. The setting and characters were interesting and for a lot of the book I was sitting there reading reasons that changed my suspects and then changed them back. This is defiantly one of better Christies books. Not my favorite but still very good. It really zips along.

Are the Ticket-Holders What They Seem? 5 out of 5 stars.

In her autobiography, Dame Agatha wrote that when she journeyed on the orient express, nothing more exciting happened than that she had to kill a few bed bugs. The journey, however, provided ideas for one of her most ingenious and tightly-plotted books.
So brilliant is the construction that she manages to have Poirot concoct two possible explanations of what happened and who did it - each involving a dozen suspects. Expect to find Poirot present on almost every page, a wide range of characters who "talk up" well in the requisite interviews, some humour, and a resolution that bypasses the need for justice to be done.
Only one film adaptation of this book has been attempted so far. It premiered during Dame Agatha's final year and she pronounced herself well-satisfied with it. More satisfying to me has been listening to David Suchet's reading of the book. Adopting and switching between perhaps twenty different accents, male and female, while reserving a clearly recognizable narrative voice, he easily feeds my imagination with travellers, a train, and a tale.
In the 1930s, writers of detective fiction still retained the earlier convention of including, towards the end, a survey of who might have committed the crime, considering motive, opportunity, alibi, etc. This happens here. I registered a falling off of interest while this occurred; otherwise I was a willing and vastly entertained captive.

Editorial Review:

On the long train ride from Istanbul to Paris, detective Poirot must find the killer of a much-hated millionaire among 13 suspects with reasons to kill.

Editorial Review:

Hoping to escape unwanted celebrity in the aftermath of a notorious incident, Ramsey Hunt settles in the Rockies, determined to bury himself in the safety of a solitary existence. But his isolation is shattered when he stumbles upon a small girl unconscious in the high-altitude forest. When strangers pursue Ramsey to his private meadow in an attempt to kill him and the girl, he's mystified that anyone would wish her harm. And the child can't shed any light on the subject: she's mute.

Molly Santana, the girl's mother, catches up with Ramsey and her daughter, mistaking her daughter's savior for a kidnapper. But soon Ramsey's real role becomes clear. With the strangers in pursuit, the trio flees to Chicago for sanctuary. Even there, however, the child's enemies prove as relentless as their motives are baffling.

With an unexpected assist from FBI agents Dillon Savitch and Lacey Sherlock (last seen in "The Maze"), Molly and Ramsey begin to unravel the clues, and in the process they make an astonishing discovery as to the true nature of the target.

Editorial Review:

Matthew Shardlake, a keenly intelligent hunchback lawyer, is in the service of Lord Thomas Cromwell, an ambitious advisor to King Henry VIII. Shardlake, and many like him, sought to create a world in which faith and charity would be enough to settle differences. But following England's break with the Roman Catholic Church, Cromwell is charged with suppressing the country's monasteries and confiscating their land. By the winter of 1537, his actions have led to rebellion and executions. The disembodied heads of accused traitors line the spikes on London Bridge was a warning to others.

Harsh new laws, rigged trials, networks of informers, and Queen Anne Boleyn herself executed on questionable charges—the scene is set for reform and for Cromwell supporter Matthew Shardlake to enter a hellish cauldron of personal, social, and political upheaval. As Shardlake starts to doubt Cromwell's methods for achieving reform, he is sent to investigate a monastery murder that only serves to fuel his suspicions, even as his own loyalty comes under the microscope.

Editorial Review:

Tim LaHaye’s most exciting series ever, Babylon Rising, continues with this explosive new installment, including more revelations than ever before. In The Edge of Darkness, LaHaye reveals the meaning behind some of the most carefully guarded Biblical prophecies to expose a conspiracy with terrifying consequences for our modern world.

This time Michael Murphy sets off in search of the Lost Temple of Dagon and the dark secrets of the strange god once worshipped by the ancient Philistines. His quest will lead to a final confrontation with an old enemy and uncover one of the Bible’s most feared warnings–a prophecy of false miracles, false messiahs, and ultimate evil that will be fulfilled in our time...and that not even Murphy can stop once it’s begun.

Once again Tim LaHaye combines his unmatched insight into Biblical prophecy with his unique skills as a master storyteller to deliver a suspense thriller of nonstop action with a thought-provoking message for our troubled times.

DR. SCARPETTA M.D. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is one of Cornwell's strongest books, Scarpetta is at her most interesting, I had read this book several years ago, but had to reread it, to remember that Cornwell at one time could actually write. I've read her lastest Book of Death, and was like, did I ever like these characters? and the answer is..yes..well Scarpetta anyway,..i always disliked, the racist, homophobic, obtuse, moron Marino, Cornwell has him promoted book after book, and im like..WHY, he's a fool!!!, maybe now that he has assaulted Kay in the last book, he's finally gone..we can only hope..anyway, this book is very good, if for no other reason than Lucy is not mentioned. I liked the twist and the mental hospital angle was truely creepy. The characters are at their most interesting and you remember why you liked Kay so much. You remember that she used to not be so negative and she was happy once, you forget that if you read Cornwell's last few books, my own personal opinion is that Cornwell herself used to be happy, but now she must be the biggest "B" on earth, because all he main characters are hateful and loathe each other. As for this book, it's very good, I always like Scapetta in Richmond as Chief Medical Examiner, she was at her best..at the top of her game..the same could be said for Ms. Cornwell..my advice to her would be to reread her early books, and recapture her talent...if not just please retire to your millions and once and foreall, put poor Scapetta to rest...she'd be doing us all a favor.

Editorial Review:

Another thrilling novel from the bestselling author of Postmortem and Black Notice

But the very night she returns to Richmond, she deactivates her burglar alarm and opens her door to someone who nearly decapitates her. Why did she let him in, wonders Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta? And, why is Beryl's latest manuscript missing? Persuing the answers involves Scarpetta in the murder of another writer - Beryl's jealous mentor. While she copes with a variety of personal and professional problems, Scarpetta's high-tech forensic skills enable her to collect a body of evidence - clues that would mean little without her intelligence, compassion, and imagination - that leads her directly into a nightmare all her own.

Editorial Review:

Josephine Tey re-creates one of history's most famous -- and vicious -- crimes in her classic bestselling novel, a must read for connoisseurs of fiction, now with a new introduction by Robert Barnard

Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world's most heinous villains -- a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother's children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the usurpers of England's throne? Grant determines to find out once and for all, with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard Plantagenet really was and who killed the Little Princes in the Tower.

The Daughter of Time is an ingeniously plotted, beautifully written, and suspenseful tale, a supreme achievement from one of mystery writing's most gifted masters.

Fantastic!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

These books are fantastic...just like the adult versions. Anyone who would call them "unholy" because they propose that "the only way to live is God's way", is sadly, lost. If you understand that God's way truly is the only way, and you want to reinforce this idea in your children, buy them these books. They are entertaining and thought provoking. They pave the way to meaningful discussions with your pre-teen. They are definitely a great value to the spiritual home!

I love these books 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

First, let me say that I am adult with 3 children of my own and I like young adult type books in general. These books are very easy to read. They are the type of book that you don't want to put down. The storyline moves pretty quickly keeping you constantly engaged and wanting to know what is going to happen next.

The books are not watered down on its stance about Christianity and are based on the book of Revelation. They are a bit preachy at times. They consistantly uses scriptures as we see the children left behind having to rely on and grow in their faith. They consistently references scriptures in the book of Revelations as events predicted in Revelations start to unfold.

As an adult, I welcome the reminder that I need to live with more faith and rely on God. The children go through many difficult situations, and we can see how faith in action works. The book of Revelations is a confusing book, so I also enjoy this vivid interpretation, and if the books get too preachy, well it's easy enough to skip over.

The topic in this series is serious, controversial and scary. Perhaps better suited for a mature child.

Editorial Review:

With over seven and one-half million copies sold in the series, Left Behind: The Kids is a favorite of kids ages 10-14. Following teens that were "left behind," they have nothing left but their newfound faith in Jesus Christ. Determined to stand up for God no matter the cost, they are tested at every turn.
