Simply Fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.

Before I start I just have to say that this book is FANTASTIC and is a really exciting step forward in the treatment of depression. At last - a non-drug approach to one of societies most overwhelming problems: Depression.

As a person who has suffered from depression in the past and as a therapist, I truly enjoyed this book from start to finish. It told me all I needed to know about mindfulness and taught me the process in a very comprehensive yet easy to follow way.

I had read several books on mindfulness by various authors before receiving this book. Compared against the others that I read, I found this one to be the most clear, so even if you do not suffer from depression, but are looking to learn mindfulness, this book could be just what you are looking for. The other bonus with this title is that it is not repetitive like similar titles I have read - it just tells you what you need to know.

Some observations that I would make though are as follows.

1. There were a few spelling and grammar mistakes throughout, however they didn't affect my `reading flow', so this should be an issue.
2. The layout of the separate sections could have been better laid out. It shows you how to follow an 8 week program in the end of the last chapter. I would have liked to seen it laid out so that you read and practice a section at a time rather than learning everything before you start.
3. There is a warning in a couple of places in the book that warn you not to us the program in is entirely now if you are experiencing an episode of clinical depression. This somewhat confused me as the title of the book is `The Mindful Way THROUGH Depression.
4. The book comes with a CD... It was recorded using the voice of one of the authors, Jon Kabat Zinn. The meditation entitled `The Body Scan' seemed a little rushed. As a personal preference, I used an old CD that I had from Jon that was much better quality for me and worked well.

These were the only negative things that I picked up and wanted to include them to make this review as balanced as possible. There were so many things right with this book though that the comments above are small concerns against all the things that you will get out of reading it.

So in conclusion: this book is easy to follow, very inspirational and motivates you to learn mindfulness and overcome your depression. It is simply fantastic.

Warmly,

Richard MacKenzie

The next generation stands on the brink of a “rebelution”

With over 10 million hits to their website TheRebelution.com, Alex and Brett Harris are leading the charge in a growing movement of Christian young people who are rebelling against the low expectations of their culture by choosing to “do hard things” for the glory of God.

Written when they were 18 years old, Do Hard Things is the Harris twins’ revolutionary message in its purest and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit their potential. Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life and map a clear trajectory for long-term fulfillment and eternal impact.

Written by teens for teens, Do Hard Things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical examples, and stories of real-life rebelutionaries in action. This rallying cry from the heart of revolution already in progress challenges the next generation to lay claim to a brighter future, starting today.

Editorial Review:

Josh Hamilton was the first player chosen in the first round of the 1999 baseball draft. He was destined to be one of those rare "high-character " superstars. But in 2001, working his way from the minors to the majors, all of the plans for Josh went off the rails in a moment of weakness. What followed was a 4-year nightmare of drugs and alcohol, estrangement from friends and family, and his eventual suspension from baseball.

BEYOND BELIEF details the events that led up to the derailment. Josh explains how a young man destined for fame and wealth could allow his life to be taken over by drugs and alcohol. But it is also the memoir of a spiritual journey that breaks through pain and heartbreak and leads to the rebirth of his major-league career.

Josh Hamilton makes no excuses and places no blame on anyone other than himself. He takes responsibility for his poor decisions and believes his story can help millions who battle the same demons. "I have been given a platform to tell my story" he says. "I pray every night I am a good messenger."

This book does not tell us how to harness the Power of Belief. It is full of technical, boring and laborsome reading. Poor choice.

Detestable Rumblings 5 out of 5 stars.

Joel Rosenberg's "Epicenter" is absolutely the best explication of the Book of Ezekiel I have ever read! Also, one of a kind!

Mr. Rosenberg--a true Jew for Jesus (and how many of *those* do we have these days, after Roman Catholicism, Martin Luther, and the Holocaust?!)--tackles the greatest metaphysical problem of our time, known as the Immanence of God - where in the world is He?

Not only has this question long puzzled theologians, it has given rise to irreverent jokes (e.g., "I found Jesus! He was behind the couch!").

Rosenberg knows that if you want to see God, you must seek Him out. Even then, it's like asking to see the doctor in the Emergency Room of a U.S. hospital: No matter how bad off you are, you will have to wait. (Worst-case scenario: a nurse finally says, "Okay, you can see the Doctor now." But she's mistaken, you can't see the Doctor at all because by that time, you're already dead.)

A few patient individuals since Abraham's day have seen the Lord without having to wait until death. The prophet Ezekiel, for one, was granted an eyeball-to-eyeball with Yahveh after just six years of prayerful pleading.

Ezekiel, as Mr. Rosenberg reminds us, is the first holy prophet whom God called "the Son of Man" (Jesus being the second). Ezekiel's ministry extended from 595 - 573 BCE, and he is the only Old Testament prophet to merit mention in The Guiness Book of World Records: Ezekiel once lay on his side for 390 days, eating bread made from the Lord's own dictated recipe: flour, water, yeast, and cow-poop. (The original recipe called for human excrement, but God finally allowed Ezekiel, who was squeamish, to substitute cow-pies for human turds: it's in the Bible, you can look it up; but I hope you never get that hungry [Ezek. 4:9-15]).

Ezekiel's meeting with the incarnate Yahveh came when the prophet least expected it, during afternoon snack-time with the Jewish elders -- none of whom was willing, however, to try one of Ezekiel's chocolate-chip muffins.

In the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I sat in mine house, and the Jewish elders sat before me, the hand of the LORD God fell there upon me. I saw Him coming, a radiant figure - and when I looked up, lo! from His burning loins downward, He was like flaming fire! And above the waist, He was the color of bright amber. (Ezek. 8:1-2)

The Jewish elders did not look up Yahweh's skirts, as Ezekiel did. They did not even see the Lord come or go. They noticed only that their friend Ezekiel, "the Son of Man," suddenly (*poof*) disappeared; and the elders were sore amazed.

The Lord had snatched Ezekiel by a lock of his long, rather dirty, somewhat tangled hair, and hoisted him high above the streets of Jerusalem.

"Son of Man," said Yahveh, "do you see what they are doing down there - the utterly detestable things that the people of Israel are doing?" (Ezek. 8:3).

Ezekiel looked down. The first thing he saw was that his mystified houseguests - the Jewish elders - had ventured out into the street, to search for him. One of the elders pointed. The rest looked up. They saw him. They waved. Ezekiel modestly tucked his robes between his thighs, so that they could not look up his skirts and see his loins. But he did not wave back at them because he was distracted and appalled by what else he saw: the prophet of God (or "Son of Man," as God always called Ezekiel) espied the Jews of Israel, on rooftops all over the city, performing such human abominations, such whoring and sodomy and gormandizing, such idol-worship and such Sabbath-breaking and such nude sun-bathing, as made him want to vomit.

"Do you see this, Son of Man?" said Yahveh. Ezekiel nodded. "Lo, you shall see things that are even more detestable than this!" (Ezek. 8:6). And the Lord was thinking at that precise moment of the Internet--2,000 years before it happened!

Needless to say, Mr. Rosenberg has some pretty detestable things to show us. I'm not going to tell you what those things are: but if you want to find out, buy Joel Rosenberg's "Epicenter"! You won't be disappointed!

A MUST READ!!! VERY SPIRITUAL & MOTIVATING!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I must say that I was not a very spiritual person until now. I have gone to several churches over many of my 41 years and not one has delivered the message to me that this book has. This book has saved my relationship and given me a completely different perspective on life. I am so interested in learning more about God and have plans to read the entire Bible within the next year. I have already purchased this book for a close friend and my brother. I also plan on sending this book to my children. I urge you to visit the website asscociated with this book to view the wonderful things there [...]. I am in no way associated the author or publishing company for this book. I found this book approximately one week ago after hitting a very low point in my life and while looking for a book that might change my life I found this book the day after a car accident that left me stranded for two days in Texas until some family assistance arrived. Again, I highly encourage those of you who are not familiar with God to give this book an opportunity to make a change in your life.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

"This short book is meant to lay out the essentials of the Christian message, the gospel." So begins Timothy Keller's new book The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith. Keller targets both seekers who are unfamiliar with the gospel and longtime church members who may not feel the need for a primer on the gospel.

Keller's book, as the provocative title suggests, is built on one of Jesus' most famous stories: the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15). Keller consents that "on the surface of it, the narrative is not all that gripping." But, he contends that "if the teaching of Jesus is likened to a lake, this famous Parable of the Prodigal Son would be one of the clearest spots where we can see all the way to the bottom." Keller has taught from this passage many times over the years, and says, "I have seen more people encouraged, enlightened, and helped by this passage, when I explained the true meaning of it, than by any other text."

The book is laid out in seven brief chapters which aim to uncover the extravagant (prodigal) grace of God, as revealed in this parable. Keller shows how the parable describes two kinds of "lost" people, not just one. Most people can identify the lostness of the "prodigal son," the younger brother in Jesus' story, who takes his inheritance early and squanders it on riotous living. But Keller shows that the "elder brother" in the parable is no less lost. Together, the two brothers are illustrations of two kinds of people in the world. "Jesus uses the younger and elder brothers to portray the two basic ways people try to find happiness and fulfillment: the way of moral conformity and the way of self-discovery." Both brothers are in the wrong, and when we see this, we discover a radical redefinition of what is wrong with us. "Nearly everyone defines sin as breaking a list of rules. Jesus, though, shows us that a man who has violated nothing on the list of moral misbehaviors may be every bit as spiritually lost as the most profligate, immoral person. Why? Because sin is not just breaking the rules, it is putting yourself in the place of God as Savior, Lord and Judge just as each son sought to displace the authority of the father in his own life." As these quotes hint, Keller's exposition of the two sons lays the groundwork for a penetrating analysis and critique of both moral relativists on the liberal left and religious moralists on the conservative right, showing that the latter are just as lost as the former. What both need is Jesus, whom Keller presents as "the true elder brother," the one who comes to our rescue at his own expense. Through his grace, we are given hope and invited to the great feast of the Father.

As with Keller's preaching, this book is intelligent and winsome, combining thoughtful reflection on both text and culture with searching heart application. Keller's book is effectively illustrated with a liberal use of stories and quotations from literature, movies, and the arts. Most imporantly, the book orients the reader's heart to the hope of the gospel of God's grace revealed in Christ.

One more note: for readers who may have felt intimidated by Keller's recent book The Reason for God, don't shrink away from The Prodigal God. It is probably only 1/3 of the length and much easier to read. I highly recommend it to unbelievers, seekers and established Christians.

Editorial Review:

Newsweek called renowned minister Timothy Keller “a C. S. Lewis for the twenty-first century” in a feature on his first book, The Reason for God. In that book, he offered a rational explanation of why we should believe in God. Now, in The Prodigal God, he uses one of the best-known Christian parables to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation.

Taking his trademark intellectual approach to understanding Christianity, Keller uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable. Within that parable Jesus reveals God's prodigal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic. This book will challenge both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way.
