At home therapy 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you think that you might benefit from "therapy", listen to this program. A large part of the effort of therapy is getting an individual to open to themselves, to see themselves as they really are, as a precursor to making changes in their life. Caroline Myss' recordings of "Energy Anatomy" and "Advanced Energy Anatomy" open the door to that introspection, giving you a framework in which to see your past life, and present actions. True, you may not agree with everything she says. But I guarantee you will find yourself nodding in agreement over and over again, at the insightful ways she presents the workings of human minds and emotions. And you will find Caroline Myss offering you answers to many of the questions you've asked yourself ("Why do I do this?" "Why did I do that?") over the years. I'm not recommending you forego therapy, if you really need it. Professional therapy can be very valuable. But I am saying that Caroline's recordings are a terrific way of getting in touch with yourself, and seeing yourself clearly (maybe for the first time), regardless of whether you want to pursue professional counseling, or not. And because (as Caroline says) the mind and emotions are prime determinants of the health of the body, this is an excellent series for anyone interested in taking good care of their body, and creating the best health possible for a vibrant and very happy life. "Energy Anatomy" offers a new way of looking at yourself, at others, and at the world around you, and this program may be the best thing you try this year.

Editorial Review:

Teaching listeners to view health through a spiritual-biological lens that offers a new picture of how the human body heals, Dr. Myss fuses new research with her work as a respected medical intuitive to reveal the body's energy network, where spirit, matter, and power intersect. She describes her theories about how the human mind encodes thought and stores it within specific areas of the body. In 12 lessons, listeners learn about the map of our body's seven energy centers; our energetic relationship to sacred texts and divine power; principles of intuitive diagnosis, and much more. Includes an illustrated eight-page study guide. 6 cassettes in a vinyl binder.

Light from one of the great teachers of yoga 4 out of 5 stars.
39 of 42 people found this review helpful.

B. K. S. Iyengar achieved an international reputation with the publication of his classic Light on Yoga in 1966, which today stands as the definitive work on hatha yoga, a work made distinctive not only by the 602 photographs of Iyengar himself demonstrating the various poses, but by the detailed manner in which they are explained. He was then 38-years-old. Since then he has written several other books on yoga and lectured widely while continuing his teaching practice. He is today recognized as one the greatest of all yoga teachers.

In this book, editor Daniel Rivers-Moore has taken it upon himself to construct a narrative by Iyengar, gleaned from lectures given by the master in Europe and India during the nineteen-eighties. Rivers-Moore has done an admirable job of bringing the voice of Iyengar to the many readers who have not had the opportunity to hear him speak. The continuity of expression is maintained throughout, and the book reads as though Iyengar wrote it himself.

One sees that Iyengar is speaking to teachers of yoga as well as students. The extended metaphor of yoga as a tree is an apt one since when our practice is strong we are like a tree, solid and unshaken by the vicissitudes of life. But it is only a metaphor, one of many used by Iyengar in his teaching practice. His metaphor is not related to what is one of the most profound metaphorical images in yoga, that of the tree upside down with its branches in the earth and its roots exposed to the sun. It is said that this is the way we will see the world after becoming firmly established in yoga. Much of what we once believed (as children and young adults), we will now disbelieve and embrace the very opposite.

The value of asana, pranayama, and meditation in preventing disease and maintaining health has been established beyond doubt, and is one of the great boons humankind has gotten from yoga, and is under no circumstances to be underestimated. However, I took Iyengar's prescriptions for the further medicinal value of yoga with the proverbial grain of salt, just as I take the ancient claims of superpowers developed through the practice of yoga. His is a way of speaking that is native to India and has a long and honored tradition in the literature. One recalls the miraculous claims of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika of Svatmarama and the Siva Samhita, in which all disease is cured, and understands that the authors are speaking in a symbolic and intentional manner. What is most interesting and valuable in this book are the chapters on meditation and pranayama, and on the advice and warnings that Iyengar extends to teachers of yoga.

Iyengar's yoga is the yoga of Patanjali, whom he reveres as "the noblest of sages." It is a yoga of discipline and dedication, a yoga of power and grace developed over at least several thousand years of practice. Of the four traditional yogas of India--bhakti, jnana, and karma--it is perhaps the oldest. It is certainly the one with the widest international application since it melds well into any and every way of life, from the monastery to the streets of the city.

Iyengar has been described by some as a teacher of physical yoga only--an unfair description that he recalls and rejects in two different places in this book. On the contrary he demonstrates here that he is also a master of raja yoga, and in particular a man who understands that the prerequisites of hatha yoga are essential to the achievement of samadhi.

Those who are familiar with Light on Yoga and Iyengar's other works, will find this volume a fine addition to their library and of value because of the light it sheds on the personality and understanding of one of the great teachers of the ancient art of yoga.

Editorial Review:

Iyengar developed a form of yoga that focuses on developing strength, endurance, correct body alignment, as well as flexibility and relaxation. The Iyengar method integrates philosophy, spirituality, and the practice of yoga into everyday living. In The Tree of Yoga, Iyengar offers his thoughts on many practical and philosophical subjects including family life, love and sexuality, health and the healing arts, meditation, death, and Patañjali's Yoga Sutras. This new edition features a foreword by Patricia Walden, a leading American teacher of the Iyengar style.

Life Changing 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book. This is the first Deepak Chopra book I've read and it was a life changing book for me. The book presents somewhat complicated material in a very easy to understand manner. I've read the book, and parts of it several times because I find it comforting. If I ever feel down about anything, reading from this book makes me feel powerful again. I can't recommend this book more!

THIS BOOK IS THE ESSENCE OF THE SPIRITUALITY OR THE MAP OF THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY. IT EXPLAINS THE FOLLOWING AND MORE.
We are a part of the whole universe like a cell in our body.
A part of the whole means a sample. The sample might not represent the whole. Therefore, our task is to learn and get the knowledge of the whole by paying attention or being aware to the energy animating all the parts of the whole
(Plants, animals, people of all kinds, etc.).
When you get the whole knowledge, you can say "the world is in me".
I HOPE THAT DR. DEEPAK CHOPRA WRITE A BOOK DETAILING CHAPTER 8.
YOU CAN DO AS WHAT I AM DOING "READ AND REREAD THIS BOOK".
AT THE END, A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO DR. DEEPAK CHOPRA.

enlightening, but convoluted 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Fischer's recount of Gandhi's life does a satisfactory job of providing facts and commentary on the Father of Modern India. Though this book may seem more approachable, however, because it is considerably shorter than several other biographies (and indeed Gandhi's autobiography), the facts of Gandhi's life and the Indian Nationalism movement are presented anachronistically and often without sufficient context. Thus it is often difficult to have a complete understanding of where, when, how, and to whom Gandhi was applying his peaceful resistance techniques.

Notwithstanding Fischer does an excellent job of elucidating Gandhi's worldview and the religious implications behind Gandhi's contrubitions to the shaping of 20th-century world history.

The true saint 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I grew up in India but never really got to know Gandhi until I read this book. It is the story of a man and how he grows into a saint - the force that got India its freedom.
But Gandhi wanted more than just the freedom of India from the British. He wanted each man to be free of all evils. His aspirations were greater than any other Indian freedom fighter - and so were his ways. In the struggle for freedom, he did not want to corrupt the individuals. Gandhi proved that you could wrestle with a pig and yet remain clean.
Louis Fischer has done a great job describing Gandhi and his life. He writes without any bias. It is an easy read and is truly inspiring.

A Field Manual for Life 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

At last, a straight-forward, easy to read manual for living without all the tedious layers of mythology and tradition that clutter many other books of like nature. Those cumbersome multi-volume texts can be enjoyable if one has the time for leisurely study and contemplation; but this book is designed for the field under combat conditions when inner struggles between reality and illusion can be extremely difficult without seasoned wisdom readily available. It's a love letter for humanity from one who truely cares.

very helpful in the study of the sutras 5 out of 5 stars.

Carrera's sourcebook is helpful in this daunting task of unpacking the sutras of Patanjali. He has explained so nicely his well-organized work which is clearly influenced by his guru, Swami Satchitanada. His clarity and humor are real gems in making this text accessible for the modern day yogi (yogini). It is highly readable and can be used as a resource and reviewed countless times. I find something new each time I read it!

Editorial Review:

Inside the Yoga Sutras presents a clear, up-to-date perspective on the classic text of Yoga theory and practice: the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This comprehensive sourcebook includes: commentary for each sutra, extensive cross referencing, a study gu

Editorial Review:

Understanding chakras is an effective first step in harnessing every human being's hidden life-changing energies and employing inner powers for spiritual and physical healing. The word chakra originated with the Vedic teachings of ancient India. It comes from the Sanskrit word for "wheel of light," and denotes the energy centers that exist in every man and woman. The Book of Chakras explores the nature of these energy sources, explains where they dwell in each of us, and instructs on how to use them. The author identifies seven energy centers in the human body. The Root Chakra, located in the lower torso, anchors us in life. From that point on the rising ladder of love and healing, we become aware of the Sacral Chakra, the Solar Plexus Chakra, the Heart Chakra, the Throat Chakra, the Brow or Third Eye Chakra, and the Crown Chakra. The last, the Crown Chakra, located in the head, is the most refined and spiritual center in the human energy system. Chakra teachings describe seven bodies that make up every person's aura. They are the Physical, Etheric, Astral, Mental, Divine, Spiritual, and Soul bodies. Chakra teachings say that each of these bodies vibrates in ways that are allied to the colors of the universe. However, only one of these bodies, the Physical, is visible. When we understand these bodies in detail, we become able to correct chakra imbalances and harness our powers for peaceful and productive living. The author advises on ways of restoring balances, healing through the power of thought, and employing colors, sounds, crystals, acupuncture, and other means. More than 300 color illustrations.

"The only tyrant I'll accept in this world is the 'still, small voice' within."
"Democracy, disciplined and enlightened, is the finest thing in the world."
"Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will."

This 21st-century expanded edition of this inspiring collection reaffirms the message of the great spiritual leader, whose life was dramatized so brilliantly in Attenborough's movie Gandhi, and who was Time magazine's "Man of the Century" runner-up (to Albert Einstein).

This expanded edition brings to a new readership more than 150 excerpts of the great spiritual leader's letters, speeches, and writings from more than four decades on daily life, cooperation, nonviolence, peace, and faith. With selections and a preface by the award-winning director of Gandhi, the book now also includes an introduction by Johanna McGeary, Time's Senior Foreign Correspondent (who wrote the essay on Gandhi for Time's century-end issue), placing Gandhi's life and work in the historical context of the 20th century.

"Gandhi was inevitable. If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. He lived, thought and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony. We may ignore him at our own risk."—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

New Age, New Age, New Age. . . 2 out of 5 stars.
62 of 77 people found this review helpful.

I began to read this book and put it away thinking that I was having a bad day and was not open and receptive. A few weeks later I picked it up again and continued to read it hoping that I might be open to its message. Again, I was not impressed on my second attempt although I felt a bit more open than on my first reading. I am not an expert in chakras but I am doing a good deal of reading in the subject lately. What I am learning is that chakras in the west are predominately cloaked in "New Age rhetoric" and chakras from the east (India, Vedic, Yoga) are centered in reality, not real (tangible), but real (cultural). If you are comfortable in the "New Age", then this book is for you. You will find the terminology and phrases right in line with typical "New Age" subject matter. If you are looking for a real (cultural) definition and or therapy you might want to look elsewhere. Chakras are subtle energy pathways that are an intricate part of Yoga practice (Yoga in its entirety).

This book has its place and there are those that will find the information and exercises helpful, I was not one of them. I have been interested in eastern philosophy for many years and find that the truth lies at the source, not in the west. We westerners have a bad habit of interpreting eastern philosophy and culture without truly understanding it. The New Age takes the bits and pieces and try to make sense out of it or create something altogether different. There is no quick western "New Age" way to remove what ails you. Your answers lie in the East and they will take time, knowledge, and practice. Thanks for reading my review.

Good if you like watered-down Hinduism 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The twelfth canto of the Bhagavata Purana describes how, in the present age of Kali Yuga, irreligion replaces religion. This does not occur overnight; it is a gradual process. And one catalyst of the process is the "watering down" of religion.

Just as when acid comes into contact with milk, the milk is transformed (into curds and whey), similarly, when beatnik and hippie philosophy mingles with Eastern thought, you get the watering down of Hinduism (and Buddhism).

Such is the case with this book. I started reading this book with an open mind; after all, even the Bible has a few pearls of wisdom in it.

However, one only has to read a few pages to see how shallow and hollow this book is.

The clincher for me was in Chapter 7 ("Renunciation and Purification"). Here the author discusses the concept of ahimsa (non-violence, particularly towards animals). In a nutshell: the author says that he gave up being a vegetarian so that he would not be proud of being a vegetarian.

This type of thinking is absolute nonsense, and can be shown by following similar logic: "I should become a thief so that I will not be proud of not being a thief". "I should become a murderer so that I will not be proud of not being a murderer." The author should just admit that he can't control himself, and his taste buds are controlling him. So much for him being a teacher of transcendence!

The person who has no knowledge of Hinduism, and is sincerely inquisitive of it, will walk way with the dismaying impression that Hinduism is a happy-go-lucky, "do your own thing", "everything goes" pseudo-religion, with no real substance. But Hinduism has schools of thought (for example, the Gaudiya-Vaishnava school) that is nothing short of the science of religion and philosophy par excellence.

The bottom line is, I am very sorry I bought this book. I don't want to donate it to the local Public Library or sell it on eBay (as I usually do with unwanted books), because I do not want to be a party to spreading nescience. If I had caged birds, you know what I would do with the pages of this book. But I don't, so it looks like this book is heading for the recycle bin.

Editorial Review:

World-renowned philosopher and spiritual teacher Ram Dass—author of the groundbreaking classic Be Here Now—presents the contemporary Western audience with a lively, accessible guide to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, the classic Hindu text that has been called the ultimate instruction manual for living a spiritual life.
