A very interesting perspective 5 out of 5 stars.

Brother Andrew, author of the classic GOD'S SMUGGLER, and veteran author Al Janssen open this insightful look into the plight of Christians in Muslim cultures with the Arabic translation of Paul's words in 2 Timothy 4:7. We know that verse as "I have fought the good fight." The authors inform us that the last three words of that verse are rendered in Arabic as "the good jihad."

The "good jihad"? As Andrew and Janssen point out, to Western ears that sounds like an oxymoron; we associate jihad with a holy war waged against those who radical Muslims call "infidels" --- meaning Christians, as well as members of other faiths and secularists and anyone else who has committed an offense against Islam. But the very purpose of SECRET BELIEVERS is to call Christians everywhere to join in the good jihad --- a prayer effort to bring Muslims to faith in Jesus Christ.

Instead of telling us about the persecution of Christians in Muslim countries --- specifically, Muslims who profess faith in Christ --- the authors wisely show us what that persecution actually looks like through a fictional account that comprises more than three-quarters of the book. The story they present focuses on the lives of a number of MBBs --- Muslim Background Believers --- based on real people who have converted to Christ and have chosen to remain in hostile Islamic countries in order to bring God's love to other Muslims.

Among the people we meet are Butros, Brother Andrew's contact in an unnamed Islamic country where the story unfolds; Ahmed, who comes to faith in Christ through the influence of his MBB friend Zaki; Father Abuna Alexander, a Christian priest who has to come to terms with Muslims-turned-Christians whose presence threatens the safety of his congregation; Salima, a young woman whose family isolates her when they discover a Bible in her room; and Mustafa and Hassan, who become the target of radical Muslim extremists.

Through the stories of those believers and others, the authors reveal both the hunger for Christ's love and forgiveness that exists among Muslims and the hatred for Christians that exists among extremists. As has been his approach since he first began smuggling Bibles behind the Iron Curtain in the 1950s, Brother Andrew emphasizes compassion over fear and hostility toward those who persecute Christians. In the nonfiction portion of the book that follows the fictional story, he and Janssen --- who serves as communications director for Open Doors International, which Brother Andrew founded --- offer a four-pronged response to the growth of Islam and the threat posed by Muslim extremists. Not surprisingly, the challenges focus on love, forgiveness, the imitation of Christ, and prayer and sacrifice --- which to Andrew and Janssen are anything but nice-sounding Christian words. They're calling for a good jihad, remember. They're in a fight, and they know it.

For whatever reason, I didn't expect the fictional portion to be as absorbing as it was. I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself caught up in the stories of the people and the hardships faced by Christians --- former Muslims as well as others --- in Islamic nations, in this case in the Middle East. And the call to jihad, with its focus on loving Muslims into the kingdom of God, is a message Western Christians can't hear often enough.

Editorial Review:

In his most incredible and eye-opening book to date, Brother Andrew invites you to meet brave men and women you never knew existed. This is the riveting true story of the Church in Islamic countries struggling to come to grips with hostile governments, terrorist acts, and an influx of Muslims coming to Christ. The names and places have been changed to protect the real people in the real places. But the stories are true. Now available in paperback, Secret Believers not only gives you a glimpse of the lives of these courageous believers, it also proposes four practical initiatives for Christians in the West to help these persecuted brothers and sisters. It calls us to join a new kind of jihad, leaving vengeance behind in favor of forgiveness, radical love, and unyielding prayer.

Wisdom of the Sufis - for any faith. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The writings of the Sufis are, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful and challenging spiritual works in existence. Rumi's works are currently undergoing something of a renaissance in the Western world but the name of Farid Ud-Din Attar is not as well known. This is unfortunate, since The Conference of the Birds provides, in my opinion, a much better insight into Sufi philosophy than the bits and pieces of Rumi floating about the New Age universe.

Attar's beautiful descpriptions, exqisite metaphors and delightful parables describe the stages on the soul's journey to union with God. An extended metaphor for the soul, the birds gather and travel through various valleys to reach the Simorgh - a state of ectstatic oneness with deity. The Hoopoe acts as the guide and provides answers to the bird's questions and doubts about the journey - usually with short illustrative tales. These tales are each tiny drops of gold, the longest being only a few hundred lines. The overarching theme is the denial of the self to gain ultimate bliss. This is no intellectual exercise and much of the advice given is shocking and revolutionary. In the extended tale of Sheik Sam'an, the Sheik leaves his faith and becomes a Christian for the love of a woman who ultimately spurns him. His apostasy and depravity astound his followers who swiftly abandon him. A Sufi teacher chastises them for their lack of faith and eventually they return to his side. Sam'an then reconverts and his love is converted too. The message would seem to be that to find God it may be necessary to abandon conventional notions of behaviour and faith and plunge forward with wild abandon, losing the self. Some of the stories may shock our sensibilities, and no doubt had the same effect on Attar's medieval audiences. A kind of counter-culture attitude is displayed in the book, with tales of romantic love between men and other "un-Islamic" behaviours challenging accepted norms.

As to the book itself, the translation is done in "heroic couplets" which according to the introduction, best suits the style of the arabic original. It at first seems a little stilted but soon lends a beauty of its own to the work. A fairly substantial introduction helps put the book in context and describes what is known of Attar's life and times. A biographical index is included which provides details on the many characters - often historical - who people the pages of the poem. This book is a beautiful little gem, filled with a lot of wisdom. It is definitely worth the read for members of any faith, even those who aren't practicing Sufis.

Editorial Review:

This 12th century Persian poet's work tells of the journey of the birds to visit King Simorgh. Their journey is an allegory of the soul's search for unity with the divine. Sufic belief is that in such unity the distinctions between self and the divine fall away.

Editorial Review:

Christianity or Islam: which is the real "religion of peace"?

Almost any liberal pundit will tell you that there's a religion bent on destroying our Constitution, stripping us of our liberties, and imposing religious rule on the U.S. And that religion is . . .Christianity! About Islam, however, the Left is silent--except to claim a moral equivalence between the two: if Islam has terrorists today, that's nothing compared to the Crusades, inquisitions, and religious wars in Christianity's past.

But is this true? Are conservative Christians really more of a threat to free societies than Islamic jihadists? Is the Bible really "just as violent" as the Qur'an? Is Christianity's history really as bloodstained as Islam's? In Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn't, New York Times bestselling author Robert Spencer not only refutes such charges, but also explains why Americans and Europeans must regain an appreciation of our Christian heritage if we ever hope to defeat Islamic supremacism. In this eye opening work, Spencer reveals:

* The fundamental differences between Islamic and Christian teachings about warfare against other religions: "Love your enemies" vs. "Be ruthless to the unbelievers"

* The myth of Western immorality and Islamic puritanism and why the Islamic world is less moral than the West

* Why the Islamic world has never developed the distinction between religious and secular law that is inherent in Christianity

* Why Christianity has always embraced reason--and Islam has always rejected it

* Why the most determined enemies of Western civilization may not be the jihadists at all, but the leftists who fear their churchgoing neighbors more than Islamic terrorists

* Why Jews, Christians, and peoples of other faiths (or no faith) are equally at risk from militant Islam

Spencer writes not to proselytize, but to state a fact: Christianity is a true "religion of peace," and on it Western civilization stands. If we are not to perish under Islam's religion of the sword--with its more than 100 million active jihadists seeking to impose sharia law--we had better defend our own civilization.

Editorial Review:

PREFACE TO THE NEW EDITION

It has been more than half a century since the first appearance of 'Abdullah Yusuf 'Ali's superlative work, The Holy Qur’an: Text, Translation and Commentary. Since that time, there have been innumerable reprinting and millions of copies distributed throughout the world. It is, by far, the best known, most studied, and most respected English translation of the Qur'an. It was the first monumental and authoritative work of its kind and it subsequently inspired many such similar endeavors. The eloquent poetic style of the translation and the authenticity of the extensive commentaries and explanatory notes, have, no doubt, contributed greatly to its much deserved reputation as the English translation of the meaning of the Qur'an.

The tremendous impact that this work has made upon the English-reading Muslims (as well as, many non-Muslims) of the world, has never been greater than it is today and shall continue-insha'a Allah (Allah willing)-for generations to come. It has enabled interested readers of English, who do not have a proficiency in reading and comprehending Qur'anic Arabic, to greatly enrich their understanding of the meaning and the incomparable beauty and perfection of the Glorious Qur'an. It has given them a more authentic and reliable translation and commentary from which they could make a serious study.

‘A. Yusuf 'All was quick to point out that there can be no absolute or perfect rendition of the meaning of the Qur'an and, at best, only an interpretation of its understood meaning can be offered. Probably, he never envisaged how universal his work would someday become, for he was primarily attempting to explain his understanding of the Qur'an to his fellow-countrymen-both Muslims and no Muslims alike. Therefore, he was apt to occasionally use references, which could not be easily appreciated outside the milieu of the Indian Subcontinent.

Although it may not have been the intention of the author to reach such a wide range of readers as exists today, there nevertheless has long been a need for a revised new edition reflecting the needs and demands of today's enthusiastic readership. In response to this need, the present edition represents the first major revision since the initial printing over fifty years ago.

Revisions have been made in both the content and form of the original work. Where necessary, the content has been brought up-to-date and within the current understanding and interpretation of the Qur'an. In the translation, the Surah introductions, and the commentaries, such changes were relatively few and infrequent and have been noted as having been revised. The reader will however, find such notable changes as the use of the name 'Allah' for the word 'God' (as used in previous editions) since it was felt that the use of this Most Glorious Name is more widely understood and accepted by the general reader today. In addition, the word 'Messenger' has been given preference over the word 'Apostle' for the meaning of the original Qur'anic word in Arabic 'Rasul'. The reason being, it was felt, that the former term more clearly expresses the Islamic usage of the term without any negative connotations, which may be associated with the latter term resulting from inaccuracies in its use by other religious or historical works.

The explanatory footnotes and the appendices, however, were subject to more frequent, and occasionally more substantial, changes than those in the translation and the commentaries. The reason being there was a greater need of general updating of information and clarification of certain explanations, which were subject to misinterpretation. There were also a few instances in which certain portions of the material were deleted, either due to its out datedness or due to its proneness to misinterpretation.

The form of this newly revised edition has undergone a more dramatic change in style and has been vastly improved in order to facilitate its readability and study. The type for the English text has been completely reset for the first time, thereby making the character definition more legible after many years of reprinting.

In addition, the spelling has been modernized and the system of transliteration of Arabic into English has been modernized and standardized. For reasons of practicality, the title of each Surah appears in its transliterated form at the head of each page within the Surah. This should enable the non-Arabic reader to not only become more familiar with the names of the Surahs in Arabic but also to begin to associate the content of what he/she is reading with the name of the Surah in which he/she is reading. In addition, the 'Abbreviated' Letters (or al Muqatta'at) have been transliterated as they are spelled out in Arabic to make it possible to learn their pronunciation.

Furthermore, anew system of Qur'anic notation of the Surah and Ayah numbers used in the English text has been adopted. The Roman numerals used in the original system have been converted to Arabic numerals thus making it easier for most readers to readily understand the notations and to encourage them to investigate the frequent references and cross-references found in the Table of Contents Index, and Footnotes. In this edition (1416/1995), anew and comprehensive index for the translation and the commentary has been added to the book to facilitate its use and maximize the benefits of the work. Finally the method of indicating each Juz' (or 1/30th part of the Qur'an) has been modified in order to incorporate the more conventional method of notation commonly used today and thereby reduce the potential for confusion to the reader.

In sum, the editors have acted out of a sincere desire to improve upon this great work. It is hoped that this will-insha a Allah- help in furthering the aim of 'Abdullah Yusuf 'Ali by enhancing the usefulness and relevance of his work to the ever-changing needs and demands of the countless readers of today. May Allah bless him for his truly extraordinary efforts in producing this invaluable work of translation and commentary.

Editorial Review:

Praised by V. S. Naipaul, Anne Tyler, and other writers, Nahid Rachlin has spent her career writing novels about hidden Iran-the combustible political passions underlying everyday life and the family dramas of ordinary Iranians. With her long-awaited memoir, Persian Girls, she turns her sharp novelist's eye on her own remarkable life.

When Rachlin was an infant, her mother gave her to Maryam, Rachlin's barren and widowed aunt. For the next nine years, the little girl lived a blissful Iranian childhood. Then one day, Rachlin's father kidnapped his daughter from her schoolyard, and from the only mother she'd ever known, and returned her to her birth family-strangers to the young girl.

In a story of ambition, oppression, hope, heartache, and sisterhood, Persian Girls traces Rachlin's coming of age in Iran under the late Shah-and her domineering father-her tangled family life, and her relationship with her older sister, and unexpected soul mate, Pari. Both girls refused to accept traditional roles prescribed for them under Muslim cultural laws. They devoured forbidden books. They had secret romances.

But then things quickly changed. Pari was forced by her parents to marry a wealthy suitor, a cruel man who kept her a prisoner in her own home. After narrowly avoiding an unhappy match herself with a man her parents chose for her, Nahid came to America, where she found literary success. Back in Iran, however, Pari's dreams fell to pieces.

When news came to Nahid that her sister had died, she traveled back to the country where she had grown up, now under the Islamic regime the West has been keeping a wary eye on for the last few years, to say good-bye to her only friend. It is there she confronts her past, and the women of her family. A story of promises kept and promises broken, of dreams and secrets, and, most important, of sisters, Persian Girls is a gripping saga that will change the way anyone looks at Iran and the women who populate it.

Editorial Review:

Why are some Muslims intolerant, violent and supremacist? Why do they bully? What spurs them to riot and murder over the silliest things? To understand Muslims, one must understand their prophet. This psychobiography seeks to unveil the mystery of the prophet of Islam. Historians tell us Muhammad used to withdraw to a cave, spending days wrapped in his thoughts. He heard bells ringing and had ghostly visions. He thought he was demon possessed, until his wife reassured him he had become a prophet. Convinced of his status, he was intolerant of those who rejected him, assassinated those who criticized him, raided, looted, and massacred entire populations. He reduced thousands to slavery, raped, and allowed his men to rape female captives. All of this, he did with a clear conscience and a sense of entitlement. He was magnanimous toward those who admired him, but vengeful toward those who did not. He believed he was the most perfect human creation and the universe's raison d'être. Muhammad was no ordinary man. This book ventures beyond the stories. Focusing on the "why" rather than the "what," it unravels the mystique of one of the most enigmatic and influential men in history. Islam is Muhammadanism. Muslims worship and emulate Muhammad. Only by understanding him can one know what makes them tick. Understanding Muhammad begins with a brief history of his life. Muhammad had a loveless childhood. He then passed to the care of relatives who took pity on him and spoiled him. As the result he developed narcissistic personality disorder, a trait that made him a megalomaniac bereft of conscience. Muhammad believed in his own cause. Even when he lied, he felt entitled and justified to do so. Thanks to another mental illness, namely temporal lobe epilepsy, the prophet of Islam had vivid hallucinations he interpreted as mystical and divine intimations. He also suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder, causing his fixations on numbers, rituals and stringent rules. In the addition, he suffered from acromegaly, a disease caused by excessive production of a growth hormone resulting in large bones and odd facial features. The combination of his psychological disorders and his unusual physiognomy made him a phenomenon that set him apart from ordinary people. His uneducated followers interpreted his differences as signs of his prophethood. Like devotees of all cults, they rose to champion his cause with dedication. By defying death and butchering others they made Islam the world's second largest religion, now the biggest threat to world peace. The author argues that Islam is incompatible with democracy and human rights, and the only way to avert the clash between barbarity and civilization, and a world disaster, is to expose its fallacy and demystify it. "Muslims must be weaned from Islam for humanity to live in peace," says Ali Sina.

Editorial Review:

"I have to be honest with you. Islam is on very thin ice with me.... Through our screaming self-pity and our conspicuous silences, we Muslims are conspiring against ourselves. We're in crisis and we're dragging the rest of the world with us. If ever there was a moment for an Islamic reformation, it's now. For the love of God, what are we doing about it?"

In this open letter, Irshad Manji unearths the troubling cornerstones of mainstream Islam today: tribal insularity, deep-seated anti-Semitism, and an uncritical acceptance of the Koran as the final, and therefore superior, manifesto of God's will. But her message is ultimately positive. She offers a practical vision of how Islam can undergo a reformation that empowers women, promotes respect for religious minorities, and fosters a competition of ideas. Her vision revives "ijtihad," Islam's lost tradition of independent thinking. In that spirit, Irshad has a refreshing challenge for both Muslims and non-Muslims: Don't silence yourselves. Ask questions---out loud. The Trouble with Islam Today is a clarion call for a fatwa-free future.

I had traveled to Amsterdam twice before picking up Buruma's book with only a faint understanding of who Theo Van Gogh was or why he was murdered, but this book weaves European history, demographics and an understanding of radical Islam into a cogent explanation of why the Dutch filmmaker was murdered. I was impressed by Buruma's explanation of the motives of T. Van Gogh's assassin, the Moroccan émigré Mohammed Bouyeri, primarily because pernicious rationalizations of poverty, isolation and disillusionment were avoided in favor of focusing on Bouyeri's Muslim faith. Radical Islam, and to a large extent the entire body of `moderate' Islam, is incapable of taking rational criticism even when protestations of, say, the treatment of women are made in good faith. This is no where more clearly exemplified than the hysteria that followed the Danish Mohammed cartoons, which stills lingers as of March 2008, and the anticipatory ire which the Dutch MP Geert Wilders has aroused in the Middle East, namely Iran, upon announcing the release of a film that will be critical of Islam. Take note that Wilder's film has yet to be released, as of early March 2008, although he has already received death threats, and is under 24/7 guard, as the murder of Theo Van Gogh proved was utterly necessary.

T. Van Gogh was an implacable iconoclast whose work with the Somali émigré Ayaan Hirsi Ali on the short film `Submission' highlighted the abominable treatment and objectification of women in Islam. In `Submission', a nude female actor is covered in misogynist verses from the Koran. In the liberal democracies of the west, this is freedom of speech, but to Islam, an egregious sin.

Europe is undergoing radical demographic changes today with ever increasing immigration from Muslim nations. I'd recommend Mark Steyn's `America Alone' to place Buruma's book with a larger context.

Editorial Review:

In an era when the relationship between Islam and the West seems mainly defined by mistrust and misunderstanding, we often forget that for centuries Muslim civilization was the envy of the world. Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the major role played by the early Muslim world in influencing modern society, Lost History fills an important void. Written by an award-winning author and former diplomat with extensive experience in the Muslim world, it provides new insight not only into Islam's historic achievements but also the ancient resentments that fuel today's bitter conflicts.

Michael Hamilton Morgan reveals how early Muslim advancements in science and culture lay the cornerstones of the European Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and modern Western society. As he chronicles the Golden Ages of Islam, beginning in 570 a.d. with the birth of Muhammad, and resonating today, he introduces scholars like Ibn Al-Haytham, Ibn Sina, Al-Tusi, Al-Khwarizmi, and Omar Khayyam, towering figures who revolutionized the mathematics, astronomy, and medicine of their time and paved the way for Newton, Copernicus, and many others. And he reminds us that inspired leaders from Muhammad to Suleiman the Magnificent and beyond championed religious tolerance, encouraged intellectual inquiry, and sponsored artistic, architectural, and literary works that still dazzle us with their brilliance. Lost History finally affords pioneering leaders with the proper credit and respect they so richly deserve.

Deceptive 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, especially in the hands of those with mercenary motives. That Ergun and Emir Caner have an ulterior motive is clear - they say so in the preface to their new book, Unveiling Islam. Write the Caners: "Since 1982, we have preached and taught about Islam, sharing our hearts' desire for salvation among the 1.2 billion Muslim people who need Jesus."

Need Jesus? That's a strange proposition coming from two authors whose names suggest that they are Muslims of Turkish origin. But that's where the surprise comes - Ergun and Emir Caner are not Muslims. They used to be. But for over two decades they have been evangelical Christians who have toured the country spreading information concerning methodologies and techniques for converting Muslims to Christianity.

Put bluntly, Unveiling Islam is a diatribe against Muslims and their faith. What is worse, is that the book masquerades as just another critical analysis of Islam. With its enticing cover photo of a Muslim woman in full Niqaab (head scarf and face veil) and its misleading subtitle, "An Insider's Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs", this book could easily be mistaken for something other than missionary literature.

Ergun and Emir Caner grew up in Galion, OH, the sons of Acer Caner, a Turkish immigrant. Although their mother was Swedish, the two boys along with their brother were raised as Muslims.

The Caners go to some length to explain their strong Islamic upbringing, ostensibly to establish themselves as experts on the topic. However, it quickly becomes clear that their perception of a solid founding in the faith is anything but. For instance they note in their preface: "We did our rakats (daily prayers); we celebrated Ramadan. We read the Qur'an and Hadith regularly. In every way, we were devout, serious Muslims."

Although the slip is indistinguishable to non-Muslims, Muslims recognize that the Arabic word for "daily prayers" is not Rakats; it is Salaat. Admittedly this is nitpicking, however the warning signs concerning an author's self-proclaimed mastery of a subject are often subtle.

Their errors become more glaring as the book goes on. As they attempt to deconstruct the Islamic religion, the Caners quote liberally from the Qur'an and from various Ahadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad). When quoting the Qur'an, they are careful to reference by chapter and verse. When it comes to quoting Ahadith, however, they continue simply citing chapter and verse, ignoring the fact that there are quite a few books of Ahadith, each of which contain rigorous material on authentication of each and every saying contained therein. Unknowing readers of this book are given the impression that there is but one, singular book of Ahadith.

The book is organized to attack various aspects of Islam. The Caners attempt to discredit the Prophet Muhammad (saaws), the underlying articles of faith, the Qur'an, Ahadith and even Allah (swt) himself. And all the way through, the Caners' either purposely or ignorantly present half-truth after half-truth, mischaracterization after mischaracterization and falsehood after falsehood.

In the chapter entitled "Security, Politics and Jihad" the Caners write, "One can be the most faithful of all believers in Allah and still be rightly sent to hell. Paradoxically, someone can be the worst person in the world and hypothetically still go to paradise."

This statement is an outright falsehood. The Qur'an is clear about the rewards that await the "most faithful of all believers". The Qur'an is additionally clear concerning the punishments that await those who transgress. And while a believing Muslim may indeed spend time in the hellfire because of various acts of transgression he or she committed in this life, Muslims believe that Allah (swt), in his mercy, will eventually remove the believers from the hellfire because of their sincere faith.

In the same chapter, the Caners write, "Here is the profound weakness of a religion in which there is no genuine connection between God and human being. Allah guides people into the truth through his prophet Muhammad, but one should never anticipate speaking to Allah personally or relationally."

Again, the Caners fail in their characterization of the religion of Islam. For if they had done their research, they would have realized that Salaat (daily prayer) and Du'aa (supplication) are indeed forms of communication with Allah (swt).

Now maybe as evangelical Christians the Caners are looking for a different kind of communication. Maybe they are looking for people to get possessed by the "Holy Ghost". Or maybe they are looking for "Tongues of Fire" to overtake a person. But regardless of what their experiences of communication have been, there is no doubt that Salaat and Du'aa fit the definition.

The book goes on to make the typical attacks Muslims have come to expect from Christians. The Prophet Muhammad is criticized for his marriage to Aisha, jihad is condemned as nothing more than Muslim bloodlust, treatment of women is highlighted.

Unveiling Islam is simply vitriolic rhetoric. It is an attempt to trick unsuspecting buyers into purchasing a biased and inaccurate account of Islam and its history. With the vast amount of factually faulty material, Muslims might have a basis to lobby bookstores to pull the book from their shelves.

As for the Caner brothers, they are a prime example of why it is essential to teach proper Islamic Aqeedah (fundamental beliefs) and other basic principles. For despite their self-proclaimed knowledge of Islam, their book is a clear testament to their profound ignorance of their former religion.
