Editorial Review:

Meet the Rabbis explains to the reader how rabbinic thought was relevant to Jesus and the New Testament world, and hence should be relevant to those people today who read the New Testament.

In this sense, Rabbinic thought is relevant to every aspect of modern life. Rabbinic literature explores the meaning of living life to its fullest, in right relationship with God and humanity. However, many Christians are not aware of Rabbinic thought and literature. Indeed, most individuals in the Western world today, regardless of whether they are Christians, atheists, agnostics, secular community leaders, or some other religious and political persuasions, are more knowledgeable of Jesus’ ethical teachings in the Sermon the Mount than the Ethics of the Fathers in a Jewish prayer book. The author seeks to introduce the reader to the world of Torah learning. It is within this world that the authentic cultural background of Jesus’ teachings in ancient Judaism is revealed. Young uses parts of the New Testament, especially the Sermon on the Mount, as a springboard for probing rabbinic method. The book is an introduction to rabbinic thought and literature and has three main sections in its layout: Introduction to Rabbinic Thought, Introduction to Rabbinic Literature, and Meet the Rabbis, a biographical description of influential Rabbis from Talmudic sources.

Captivating 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this story to introduce the theme of Hanukkah to my grade 2 and 3 students today, and I don't think I've ever seen them so enthralled by a book before. They absolutely loved it, and had a ball predicting ways in which *they* might outwit the Hanukkah goblins if they were in Hershel's shoes. Their ideas were so creative that I asked them to do an impromptu assignment in which they write their own ideas down in book form, with decorative pictures and all. This was one time I didn't hear groans at the thought of (horrors!) writing!

Great story, great pictures... great job!

Hear what the author has to say! 5 out of 5 stars.

I had the opportunity to interview Eric Kimmel for my podcast, The Book of Life. He is a very fun guy and I'm sure you'd enjoy hearing what he has to say about Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins. You can listen to the interview at www.jewishbooks.blogspot.com - click on the December 2005 episode.

An invaluable source for the most common prayers used in the Jewish faith both Sephardic and Ashkenazic, with distinction and references delineating which is which. Organized in the flow of the daily observances, it is exceedingly simple to follow along and the facing English-Hebrew pages make cross-referencing a snap for those trying to learn the language. I highly recommend this book for both the curious and dedicated.

The glowing reviews say it all 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There isn't much I can add to the other positive (and nicely detailed) reviews. This is simply one of, if not the best, books you can buy regarding the western tradition. Get this, then pick up Crowley's 777 for checking details, symbols, correspondences, etc. This is a strange area of study in that, on one hand, every piece of valid information you can get your hands on is helpful, but on the other hand it's very subjective when it comes down to the practice itself.

The only thing I can think to add is that A.O. Spare and Alan Moore are the only authors that have done as much to educate me as Fortune and Crowley.

Excellent, Excellent and more Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book. I enjoyed every inch of it. Going into the book I had no knowledge of the Qabalah. My knowledge has grown to what I consider to be more than a basic or general understanding. I own several books by Dion Fortune and I must say this is the best of them. It is very well written and also extremely practical in its approach.

Editorial Review:

Dion Fortune's classic, The Mystical Qabalah, explores all aspects of the Qabalah, including the esoteric sciences of astrology and tarot, which form the basis of the Western Mystery Traditions. It provides a key to the practical working of this mystical system for both novice and initiate alike.

Superb Treatment of David's Life! 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 31 people found this review helpful.

A few years ago the women's Bible study in my church went through the video version of "A Heart Like His." I heard glowing reviews from one lady after another, speaking of how pertinent and powerful the material was. Unfortunately, it was then geared exclusively to women, so I never watched the videos myself.

With the memory of those glowing reviews still fresh in mind, I decided to purchase the book version and see for myself if Beth Moore's teaching lived up to its reputation. I was certainly NOT disappointed. This book is an outstanding treatment of the triumphs and the tragedies of Israel's most famous king.

Moore takes practically every significant incident from David's life and applies the spiritual principles to life today. Through her exposition here, the reader gets to know David much better, and learns why he has been called "a man after God's own heart." The author's treatment is chronological, starting from the events surrounding David's emergence on the Biblical scene as a young boy to the transfer of his throne as an old man to his son Solomon.

I recommend this book very highly to anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the life of King David. The book is very easy reading, yet is profound in its insights. Men and women, clergy and laity alike will benefit from Moore's painstakingly thorough work.

Editorial Review:

He was a man loved and annointed by God, and his life serves as an example-both good and bad-for Christians in every time and place. In this in-depth look at the life of David, Beth Moore draws spiritual insight and understanding from a man who slayed a giant and saved a kingdom.

This book guides readers on an exciting and informative journey through virtually every twist and turn of David's life as a shepherd, refugee, and king. Moore introduces readers to the heart of a man whose triumphs and sins were foundation blocks of God's plan and prophecy and shows readers how to better serve God by understanding their own unique relationship to Him.

A New Earth Deception 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Clearly this author is very much on an ego trip. As a follower of Christ for the past 20 years of my life in no way did I find what Eckart wrote in contridiction to my faith. What the book did do is help me understand the bible more. I think Mr. Abanes needs to become a bit more conscious before passing judgement. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want and what makes him think what he wrote is so right? People just make up your own mind about God and why he has you here. It is on the inside of you. Just listen not to the voice in your head but to the small whisper in your soul.

Editorial Review:

When Christians are confronted by media with a "new" theology, they aren't always sure what to do. It may sound spiritual, almost Christian. But something isn't quite right. Richard Abanes helps believers as well as the curious understand that Eckhart Tolle's message in A New Earth is dangerous. He then provides a clear biblical response to this New Age message. Topics include Tolle's misuse of Scripture, false teachings on God, the Bible's teaching on evil, A New Earth's version of salvation compared to God's plan, and much more.

good reference 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a good book if one is looking to learn about the history about many of the talismans that are out there and it enables one to obtaine an understanding of what the seals the talismans represents are used for.

Great Guide for Talismans 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful guide if you are interested in getting any of the Talismans, or learning about them. I really *not* into spells of any kind, so the parts that address that I intentionally overlooked. If you are a student of Kaballah (as I am) you can find much here - but it's super in-depth, no light reading here at all.

I'm personally fascinated by King Solomon - if you are, this book won't disappoint you.

No images on Kindle edition 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was sad to see that this Kindle edition is missing all the figures, seals, and sigils. No tables, nothing. There are other books of the occult that translate very well into the Kindle. I've converted free PDF's of the Ars Paulina (for example) that retained the seals and it looked great. This Kindle version is limited. It's good for a word search.

The page formating is also very off. Chapters starting on the bottom half or a previous page. etc.

Editorial Review:

How to make a magic carpet, become invisible, and find love are among the useful procedures detailed in this famous book of magic. Reputedly written by King Solomon himself, this major text of Western ritual magic contains chants, prayers, and general instructions on trafficking with the spirit world.

Yearnings, Embracing the sacred messiness of life 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found it a bit difficult to read cover to cover because of it's intensity. But I still thouroughly enjoyed the book when I jumped around to read sections relevant to my life. It has something for everyone. Its a kind of book that needs to be re read a few times to get all the meanings. Overall a very nourishing book

Editorial Review:

Winner of the Books for a Better Life Award
Chosen as one of "The 10 Best Spiritual Books of 2006" by Spirituality and Health magazine

Rabbi Irwin Kula explores desire in spiritual life. Rather than leading us astray, our longings are gateways to self discovery. Our yearnings, once understood, can lead us to discover an expansive vision of God or a wider reality. And when we embrace even our most painful or taboo desires, we can love more deeply and live more fully.

The Biblical authors wrote about characters who, rather than leading perfect lives, actually struggled with their longings for success, love, sex, and happiness. Through interpreting those stories and other spiritual traditions, as well as exploring his own desires and those of regular people, Rabbi Kula shows that "The more we allow ourselves to unfold, the less likely we are to unravel. The more we dive into our desires, the more exquisite life becomes."

Editorial Review:

A chilling account of political intrigue, illicit sex, murder, war, and human frailty that could only have come from the Bible. The story of David is the greatest single narrative representation in antiquity of a human life evolving by slow stages through time, shaped by the pressures of political life and family, the impulses of body and spirit, and the eventual sad decay of the flesh. In its main character, it provides the first full-length portrait of a Machiavellian prince in Western literature. The beautiful, musical David, resourceful slayer of Goliath, loved by all, reveals himself as a calculating political animal. To advance his own cause, he becomes a collaborator with the archenemies of Israel, the Philistines. Later he commits adultery with Bathsheba, and compounds the betrayal with murder. He exposes himself repeatedly to humiliation, oscillates between noble sentiment and harsh vindictiveness, and with his dying breath charges his son Solomon to wreak bloody vengeance on his enemies. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Robert Alter's brilliant translation and commentary enable a great work of literature to emerge from the Bible and stand on its own.
