Editorial Review:

A chilling account of political intrigue, illicit sex, murder, war, and human frailty that could only have come from the Bible. The story of David is the greatest single narrative representation in antiquity of a human life evolving by slow stages through time, shaped by the pressures of political life and family, the impulses of body and spirit, and the eventual sad decay of the flesh. In its main character, it provides the first full-length portrait of a Machiavellian prince in Western literature. The beautiful, musical David, resourceful slayer of Goliath, loved by all, reveals himself as a calculating political animal. To advance his own cause, he becomes a collaborator with the archenemies of Israel, the Philistines. Later he commits adultery with Bathsheba, and compounds the betrayal with murder. He exposes himself repeatedly to humiliation, oscillates between noble sentiment and harsh vindictiveness, and with his dying breath charges his son Solomon to wreak bloody vengeance on his enemies. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Robert Alter's brilliant translation and commentary enable a great work of literature to emerge from the Bible and stand on its own.

These CHARTS are the best. Get them all. 5 out of 5 stars.

Were all biased anyway. The question is which bias is the best bias. Catholics or anyone who "may not benefit as much" from this tool should wonder why not? I don't think God wrote a book hard to be understood. If you are a Catholic, Charismatic, or of the "Orthodox" persuasion, and you cannot "benifit as much" from this chart due to "bias", then perhaps you need to explore the differences between what makes a Christian different from a Catholic. These are not merely terms. A "Christian" is not an umbrella that encompasses a vast majority of mainline denominations or cults or movements or sects, as many people would have others to believe. God in His word tells us who are His. It would be best for folks to check it out. (Jn.1:12; 3:16; Eph.2:8 etc.)----anyway. As the Charts are a great series I personally own three of the set or series, and they are outstanding.

Editorial Review:

This volume is a revised, updated, and expanded edition of a very popular tool for pastors, teachers, and students for the study of the Old Testament.

Awesome 5 out of 5 stars.

Everyone should read this book. I reinforces so much and at the same time it helped me understand the old testement like never before. The entire bible should be written like a history book for all to understand better.

A Stunning Affirmation of Historical Significance 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I see several reviews here that attack this book for daring to acknowledge the historical accuracy of the Bible. Those reviews say more about the bitterness and intolerance of the reviewer than they do about "The Bible As History."

After reading all of them, I wonder if they're more fueled by fear than their smug arrogance: if the Bible proved to be historically accurate...then what if the rest were true? (Those arguments are best left to the many other books out there).

Anyway, if you're intrigued by archaeology and the Bible, I would definitely recommend this book. Written by a German journalist and originally published in the 1950s (I believe), it's a book that badly needs to be updated or at least perhaps someone should undertake a second volume that's as well written for the general masses as this one. The discrediting of Kathleen Kenyon's attempt to discredit the Bible should be addressed, along with the discovery of bone boxes of Jesus' Jewish judge and the amphitheatre step with King David's name on it should be added to this incredible story.

What I loved about this book was the early history of archaeology in the Middle East and how many people literally used the Bible as a map to locate entire lost cities under the sand. It's as fun as it was fascinating to read.

As more and more discoveries are unearthed there every few years--and all of them only attest to the Bible's impregnable authenticity as a record of history--a book like "The Bible as History" becomes as essential as it is enjoyable to read and keep on the shelf.

If the athiests weren't so afraid of what the sand and stones still yield, they might even enjoy it too.

Outstanding Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I had to read this book as a text for O.T. Survey, a class I took while in Bible College. Mr. Merill wrote a wonderful book that does not confuse Bible students nor casts doubt on the certainty of the validity of the O.T. Scriptures. Great infromation and well documented. I also like his charts and foot notes.

Merrill's Historical Survey of the OT 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A very good read. Informative and engaging. Packs a ton of useful information into an efficient outline. Extremely helpful to those who are diving into the OT for the first time in a focused study.

Editorial Review:

Merrill has extensively updated this popular-level Old Testament history to discuss updates in archaeology and textual understanding. It is also more current as a defense of the Bible's accuracy.

Trees of the Dancing Goats is a beautiful, poignant story and one of my all time favorites. Grown-ups love it as much as the kids. If you don't have this one on your bookshelf, you should get it! If you've been good, maybe Santa Claus will drop a copy in your stocking this year!

One of my all-time favorites! 5 out of 5 stars.

Drawing upon her own family's experience, Patricia Polacco shares a story of true holiday giving. Her Russian grandparents teach the meaning of friendship and miracles as they relate the story of Hanukkah and as they reach out to their Christian neighbors who are suffering from a deadly epidemic of scarlet fever. They adapt the symbols of their Jewish celebration to bring Christmas to those who are too ill to create their own festivities. Polacco's colorful illustrations capture the warmth and spirit of the characters and do much to enhance this wonderful story.

Editorial Review:

Patricia Polacco's "heartsong" about the winter she and her Jewish family played Santa to their Christian neighbors who were stricken with scarlet fever is now available in a special gift edition. The enclosed CD features the author reading the story to musical accompaniment by Hankus Netsky. Full color.

"This is foremost an engaging textbook designed for home schooling the advancing witch, and it is encyclopedic in its rituals, charts, and even homework assignments." —Publishers Weekly

THE CRAFT MEETS HIGH MAGICK
Take your spiritual evolution to the next level by mastering the essentials of ceremonial magick.  In this much-anticipated fourth volume in Christopher Penczak's award-winning series on witchcraft, he introduces the concepts of the Qabalah and the rituals of high magick, and explores the deeply interwoven relationship between these traditions and the Craft.

The teachings in this book correspond to the element of Air, guiding you into the realm of creative and critical thinking, communication, knowledge, and truth. Four preliminary chapters introduce the basic concepts, history, and skills you will need for your journey. Next, twelve formal lessons, in the witches' traditional year-and-a-day format, provide instruction in the fundamentals of ceremonial magic:

·The Qabalah
·The Tree of Life
·Symbol and sigil magick
·Elemental constructs
·Qabalistic Cross
·The four worlds and their correspondences
·Middle Pillar
·Pathworking
·The Ritual of the Rosy Cross
·Invoking and banishing rituals
·Fluid condensers
·Barbarous words of power, magickal constructs, and the Goetia

The book's thirteenth lesson culminates in a ritual initiation fusing the traditions of witchcraft and high magick—the creation of your own Reality Map. The cosmology you create will be based on your own spiritual experiences as well as the philosophies and practices of ceremonial magick.

Editorial Review:

In four superb homilies and a concluding essay, Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, provides a clear and inspiring exploration of the Genesis creation narratives.

While the stories of the world’s creation and the fall of humankind have often been subjected to reductionism of one sort or another — literalists treat the Bible as a science textbook whereas rationalists divorce God from creation — Ratzinger presents a rich Catholic understanding of these early biblical writings and attests to their enduring vitality.

Beginning each homily with a text selected from the first three chapters of Genesis, Ratzinger discusses, in turn, God the creator, the meaning of the biblical creation accounts, the creation of human beings, and sin and salvation; in the appendix he unpacks the beneficial consequences of faith in creation.

Expertly translated from German, these reflections set out a reasonable and biblical approach to creation. ‘In the Beginning . . .’ also serves as an excellent homiletic resource for priests and pastors.

Cohen Connects With His Spiritual Heritage 4 out of 5 stars.
33 of 36 people found this review helpful.

Leonard Cohen, always the great poet, has done a masterful job of expressing the spirit of the Psalms in modern prosaic, poetic form. And like the son of the chief psalmist, Cohen has traveled a road that has taken him through many life experiences, only to come through them to arrive at the knowledge of that which truly matters. Book of Mercy is not only a literary gem, but a book of enlightening and thought provoking inspiration for Jew and Christian alike, not to mention that person we often refer to as a seeker.

The Psalms, Updated 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Perhaps Leonard Cohen has never been a King, as was David, but the passion of his reflections truly invites comparison.

Cohen struggles with G-d, in the finest tradition of Judaism-- indeed, of all spiritual combat. So he both speaks to G-d, and he listens. His listening compels me to listen with my own feeble ears.

This is a book for all spiritual combatants, whether Jewish, Christian, or Muslim. Or any faith that is "of the book."

Poet of Pain 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Although Book of Mercy is written in prose, its soul is poetic.
To try to describe it I must point at the Moon -- there are no words
in me, experience it for yourself. My best friend's roots are Jewish,
mine are Catholic, we have evolved into an inclusive state of being,
yet Book of Mercy shows us the origins of our religions respectively --
althouth it is beyond either.

Here are some publisher's quotes: "An eloquent victory of the human spirit in combat with itself." (Globe and Mail)
"One of the most honest and courageous attempts in Canadianwriting to grapple with ultimate truth." (Books in Canada)
"Resplendent evidence of an arduous spiritual journey." (Maclean's)

Nobody else in our times reaches the tundra of the soul's journey as does Cohen. A wonderful love-version of the Star of David graces the cover.

Editorial Review:

The first female head of state in the Western world and one of the most influential women in modern history, Golda Meir was a member of the tiny coterie of founders of the State of Israel, the architect of its socialist infrastructure, and its most tenacious international defender. Her uncompromising devotion to shaping and defending a Jewish homeland against dogged enemies and skittish allies stunned political contemporaries skeptical about the stamina of an elderly leader, and transformed Middle Eastern politics for decades to follow.

A blend of Emma Goldman and Martin Luther King Jr. in the guise of a cookie-serving grandmother, Meir was a tough-as-nails politician who issued the first prescient warnings about the rise of international terrorism, out-maneuvered Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger at their own game of realpolitik, and led Israel through a bloody war even as she eloquently pleaded for peace. A prodigious fundraiser and persuasive international voice, Golda carried the nation through its most perilous hours while she herself battled cancer.

In this masterful biography, critically acclaimed author and Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist Elinor Burkett looks beyond Meir's well-known accomplishments to the complex motivations and ideals, personal victories and disappointments, of her charismatic public persona. Beginning with Meir's childhood in virulently anti-Semitic Russia and her family's subsequent relocation to the United States, Burkett places Meir within the framework of the American immigrant experience, the Holocaust, and the single-mindedness of a generation that carved a nation out of its own nightmares and dreams. She paints a vivid portrait of a legendary woman defined by contradictions: an iron resolve coupled with magnetic charm, an utter ordinariness of appearance matched to extraordinary achievements, a kindly demeanor that disguised a stunning hard-heartedness, and a complete dedication to her country that often overwhelmed her personal relationships.

To produce this definitive account of Meir's life, Burkett mined historical records never before examined by any researcher, and interviewed members of Meir's inner circle, many going on record for the first time. The result is an astounding portrait of one of the most commanding political presences of the twentieth century—a woman whose uncompromising commitment to the creation and preservation of a Jewish state fueled and framed the ideological conflicts that still define Middle Eastern relations today.

My Favourite Bedtime Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If I want to go to sleep with a warm fuzzy feeling, then this is the book I read. I love that Claudia Roden is a human being who can go around the world and find welcome in so many homes and kitchens. The historical vignettes and photographs are what make this volume priceless. Although people have made criticisms in regards to the finer points of Kosher and non-Kosher, it is quite clear that this cookbook is not primarily for the benefit of Jewish cooks. The educational component of this extremely charming work is quite obviously directed at the reader who is interested in the ways of life of various communities of the diaspora. The historical availability of ingredients is largely geographically dependent for any cuisine. These days, if we live in a big city with an international airport and various ethnic communities, a cook can buy almost anything. The development of a cuisine though is totally dependent on the availability of ingredients. It is totally inappropriate to quibble about the fact that both Jews and other local people also consume the same foods. None of that makes the spirit of this book any less genuine. That is precisely what makes Ms Roden's work so real. There are 'comfort foods' and then there are 'comfort books'. The Book of Jewish Food is both.

Editorial Review:

A monumental work--the story of the Jewish people told through the story of Jewish cooking--The Book of Jewish Food traces the development of both Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewish communities and their cuisine over the centuries. The 800 magnificent recipes, many never before documented, represent treasures garnered bu Roden through nearly 15 years of traveling around the world. 50 photos & illustrations.
