A Message... 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I remember that night in December 1993. As Christians, we displayed the full paged Menorah from the Billings Gazette in our window. It was a message to the skinhead(s) that hatred and bigotry have NO place in Billings, Montana or anywhere else.

One of the Best 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the best books for kids during the holidays (or year round for that matter). It's great for adults too, I look forward to reading it every Hanukah.

An important true story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our kids have turned this into a play, which they have enacted the past three years at Chanukah. It's an important about tolerance fighting hate.

This is an important story for Jewish and non-Jewish children.

Editorial Review:

Cohn's powerful narrative tells how two children, two families--one Jewish, one Christian--and a community resolve to stand together against the shameful actions that have been happening in their home town. Her story is based on real events that happened in Billings, Montana, in 1993. Farnsworth's beautiful paintings illuminate the message of the power of goodness. Full color.

Holocaust picture book 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

An elderly lady retells events from her childhood. She describes her confusion and fear when her best friend has to wear a yellow star, her sadness when her friend mysteriously disappears one night and her enduring hope of finding her again. Great introduction for learning about the Jews under Nazi Germany. Reading level is third grade but good as a read aloud to younger children. Very moving.

Wonderful Teaching Tool to discuss the Holocaust 5 out of 5 stars.

Each year I do a thematic unit on the Holocaust and this is one of the picture books that I use with my sixth grade students. They enjoy the story and the pictures portray the writer's feelings were very.

Good introduction to the Holocaust for young children 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I can't think of a time in my life when I *didn't* know about the Holocaust.

There must have been such a time, nobody takes their three year old kid and one day decides to tell them of horrific things, but I can't recall it.

My nieces are 5 and 2.5, and the older one is right about the time when she should be learning about serious subjects.

This is, I think, a good introduction to what is a very serious subject indeed.

The reality of the Holocaust isn't diluted, but it's told at a level that's appropriate for small children - losing a friend and lifelong regret, and you know she didn't survive, but that's not spelled out.

Whenever you decide it's appropriate to start talking to your kids about this sort of subject, consider this book.

The Sweetest Book I know! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My five year old daughter loves elephants, so when we saw this book, we thought we'd give it a try. We both fell in love with the friendship described in this book; the yearning of wanting one's fantasies to come true. The surprise ending gave us both goosebumps. Although we have tons of books, we love to snuggle up at night to read this book, "...and dream of Emma Kate."

How sweet !!! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I saw this book title I just had to have it for my Granddaughter. Her name is Emma Kate and she is now 6 months old so I guess grandma will enjoy reading it to her until she is old enough to enjoy it herself. And...I loved the ending !

A delightful read-aloud book 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a reading specialist and I shared this book with several classes. They loved it! It is a sweet, fun book.

Editorial Review:

That adorable Emma Kate has an imaginary friend. They walk to school together every morning and sit together in class. They sleep over at each other’s houses and do their homework side by side. They even have their tonsils out and eat gallons of pink ice cream together. But a hilarious twist will have readers realizing there’s more to this imaginary friend than meets the eye!

This lovely book has beautiful, bright graphics, as pleasing to a 2 year old as to a 4 year old and beyond! The text is clear and informative. A pleasure to read!

Editorial Review:

Graphic, vibrant artwork and die-cuts in the shape of candles combine to create this informative and elegant book about one of the most joyous Jewish holidays. The symbols of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, are visually presented to stunning effect as young children learn to count in three different languages from one to eight. Die-cuts of colorful candles--one for each night of Hanukkah--against rich black backgrounds add up one by one with each turn of the page. The importance of the menorah, shamash candle, dreidels, and more are explained in this simple retelling of the story of Hanukkah

Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

REVIEWED BY: Gayle Jacobson-Huset, Managing Editor

In 1892, Ari the Engineer was chosen to drive the very first train from Jaffa to Jerusalem. Nathaniel and Jessie, his friends, were not chosen and were sad. Ari was so happy to be chosen that he bragged too much to his friends and hurt their feelings. But Ari didn't care - he was so excited that he was making this first historic trip to Jerusalem. He was in such a hurry to leave, he didn't even say good-bye to his friends!

As he makes stops along the way, people give him food and treats to bring to the people of Jerusalem to help them celebrate the Rosh Hashanah holiday. Ari started to think of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. He thought of his friends that he'd hurt with his bragging. Did Ari go back to Jaffa and apologize to Nathaniel and Jessie? You'll just have to read this cute book to find out. I loved the storyline and the colorful kid-friendly illustrations. This book gets a high-five for teaching your child all about friendship and compassion. This one's a keeper that your child will enjoy reading over and over again.

Editorial Review:

A sweet and creative Rosh Hashanah story based on the first historic train ride from Jaffa to Jerusalem in 1892, shortening the journey between the two cities from 3 days to 3 hours. Engineer Ari's train is coming to Jerusalem collecting goodies along the way to celebrate the Jewish new year, and he learns an important lesson along the way.

A great relief for parents who are inundated with why ques 4 out of 5 stars.
31 of 32 people found this review helpful.

If you have one of those kids who asks "why" about everything, then this is the book for you. This book answers common question like "Why do we play dreidel?" and "Why do we plant trees?" as well as hard ones like "Why do we fast on Yom Kippur?".

For REALLY young children 3 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my 5-year-old, and even she found it too simplistic. She was looking for more information than the book provided. It's better for my son, who is 2.

A nice overview for children 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a Christian, married to a Buddhist, who is raising my child as a Christian. We want to raise our son to have an appreciation for all beliefs. I purchased this book on a visit to the Skirball Cultural Center in LA because I wanted to be able to continue to point out parallels in the various faiths and to start giving him something to tie his understanding to. I think this is a marvelous book for doing just that for young children. I'd love to find similar books about other faiths! I would say that this book is geared for a child of 4 or 5. I would probably push that age younger for a child being raised in the Jewish Faith as the subjects covered would be part of their everyday life at a young age. I would highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

In direct and simple language, Rabbi Kolatch explains the significance of some of the most fascinating traditions and customs of Judaism and introduces the child to the major and minor holidays in the Jewish calendar. The text is enhanced by the lively full-color illustrations of one of Israels leading contemporary artists. For ages four and up.

A nice addition to the Hanukkah treasury of books 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What can I add? The reviews above give you the proper feeling for the story. Best of all are the female heroes, and the good deeds performed. Just in case you happen to obtain a magic pan of your own, the secret words to stop it are the translation of "Nes Gadol Haya Sham"

Highly recommended for young readers. 5 out of 5 stars.

This Chanukah is an excellent story for the season. Sadie and her four younger brothers are poor and always hungry, but Sadie is given a frying pan that cooks up latkes on demand. When her brothers become involved in the find, trouble ensues.

Editorial Review:

Sadie and her four little brothers are very poor and always hungry. On the first night of Chanukah, Sadie performs a generous act, and in turn receives a frying pan that cooks up sizzling hot, golden latkes on command. Sadie tells her brothers never to use the magic pan, but when she goes out one afternoon, the mischievous boys can't resist. They remember the words to start the pan cooking . . . but what were the words to make it stop? This humorous tale of generosity and greed is accompanied by bright, cheerful illustrations depicting a traditional Russian village. An author's note and a recipe for Sadie's latkes are included.

A treaure.... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This books is the childrens version of The Alchemist....I love the idea of both books- you have to travel far to find what is near. What an insightful story for a child.
Shulevitz has becautifully scuplted the illustrations around a quick and simple story.
A poverty stricken man must listen to his dreams, and travel a great distance to find the answer to his journey. Sometimes the answer we are looking for is not the question itself- but the journey we must go through. It' wond a caldecott honor in 1980, and i was given this gift as a child some tens years later. I read it over and over and learned that you have to follow your dreams....even if there is work involved. The little old man has a happy ending, but does not forget to honor those by which he found his gift.

Editorial Review:

Three times a voice comes to Isaac in his dreams and tells him to go to the capital city and look for a treasure under the bridge by the royal palace. Feeling a little foolish perhaps, but determined to see for himself if the dream is true, Isaac sets out on his long journey. What he finds makes a surprising and heart-warming ending to this retelling of a well-known folk tale. In a few words, Cadelcott Medal winner Uri Shulevitz draws a man who is innocent enough to have faith in a dream, and wise enough to understand the greatest reward of all.

Isaac's solitary journey, his arrival at hte vast city, and his discovery there are all enriched by Mr. Shulevitz's beautifully detailed illustrations, which masterfully capture the spirit of the original tale while keeping it simple enough for the very youngest reader.

a candle-bright story to share! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Thank goodness, this book is NOT another retelling of the Chanukah story. Instead, the author uses the menorah's lights as a metaphor. The young speaker finds lights in his own world--lamp lights, car lights, star lights--to match the number of candles in the menorah. And the illustrator has painted just the same number of cats, too, so that the pages are utterly engaging. The PW reviewer clearly doesn't realize that preschool- and young readers want something more than a factual narrative. This beautiful book underscores community and family with its rich paintings and words that stretch a young imagination. The candle lights in this story radiate far beyond the page.

Very Nice Chanukah Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I chose this book for my classroom rather than other Chanukah books because it covers all nine days in a nice clear way. It is a gentle nice story that many children will enjoy and many kids will better understand how Chanukah is celebrated by Jewish people in the United States.

Editorial Review:

One crescent moon glows in the sky. Two headlights shine through the window. . . . On each magical night of Chanukah, a young boy and his sister count more lights shining all around them! Join them as they discover what it means to celebrate Chanukah in a world filled with so many other lights.

Editorial Review:

In this follow-up to the popular The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey: A Graphic Novel of Jewish Wisdom and Wit in the Wild West, the Rabbi returns to the streets of Elk Spring, Colorado. Part Wild West sheriff, part old world rabbi, Harvey protects his town and delivers justice, wielding only the weapons of wisdom, wit, and a bit of trickery. These adventures combine Jewish and American folklore by creatively retelling comic Jewish folktales and setting them loose on the western frontier of the 1870s.

As his fame grows throughout the Rocky Mountains, Rabbi Harvey meets new characters--including the luckless gold miner Abigail--and faces a slew of new challenges. He encounters the return of "Big Milt" and Wolfie Wasserman (the most feared father-and-son outlaw team east of Nevada), and investigates another bold crime by the sweet-faced Bad Bubbe. And, as ever, the Rabbi is the quickest draw in the West--when it comes to pulling out bits of Talmudic insight to fit any occasion, that is. Like any great collection of Jewish folktales, these stories contain layers of humor and timeless wisdom that will entertain, teach and, especially, make you laugh.
