Editorial Review:

"The seder service on Pesach is the oldest surviving ritual in the Western world, dating back some 3,300 years....Through the Haggadah more than a hundred generations of Jews have handed on their story to their children....Few texts have received more attention than the Haggadah. There are thousands of commentaries, and more are published each year. Anyone who contemplates adding to this number must ask not `Why is this night different?' But `Why is this edition different?' My answer is that I wrote this commentary because, amongst all the many I have read, I could not find one that explained in their full richness and scope the fundamental themes of the Pesach story: the Jewish concept of a free society, the role of memory in shaping Jewish identity, and the unique connection that exists in Judaism between spirituality and society, giving rise to what I have called elsewhere `the politics of hope.'"-Jonathan Sacks

This Haggadah is actually two books in one. At what would be the back of an English-language book is the Haggdah in large, beautiful Hebrew typography, with an English translation adapted and with a running commentary by Rabbi Sacks. The Hebrew text and accompanying English translation are carefully arranged so as to be easy to use at the seder table. As such, this book is an ideal companion for use at the Passover meal. At the other end of the book are Rabbi Sacks's Essays on Passover. The 21 short essays demonstrate the qualities that make Rabbi Sacks one of the world's foremost religious leaders: keen intelligence, acute moral sensitivity, and a wide-ranging historical and literary imagination.

Not five stars after all. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I had to change my review after we actually used this Haggadah at the seder. My opinion is not influenced by the fact that my hyper-active 6 year old quietly disappeared during the seder and came back to the table with blood dripping from his eye-brow (he fell on a stick he had taken inside and was playing with). My husband took him to the emergency room and another man finished the seder. But afterwards, we all agreed that in general the Haggadah didn't work for us. Another friend also bought this one and said she didn't like it. I bought a different one the next year that was specifically created for little kids.

Easy, Simple and Clear 5 out of 5 stars.

This handy Haggadah is a must have. It has clear instructions, a clear type, and an excellent translation (as one would expect from Artscroll). This past passover it was a treasure to use. I had an in-depth haggadah to look up insights, and then this one to use for the seder - it was great, I did not miss a beat with its user-friendliness. Also its large print made it a gem after the fourth cup !! The seder can be a chaotic jumbled mess, but this handy book in a convenient size (not too small and not too big), made every moment a memorable experience. Sometimes its just the telling of the story - without all the extras that does it best. Thank you artscroll.

Editorial Review:

The Family Haggadah combines economy, accuracy, and the famed ArtScroll elegance. Printed in two colors, it includes the full text and ArtScroll translation, plus instructions, notes and an introduction. Convenient and inexpensive; ideal for groups. Full color soil resistant laminated cover.

Editorial Review:

Between the covers of this elegant volume dwells a thorough and thoroughly engrossing compilation of stories, songs, recipes, artwork, prayers, and commentary on the beloved Jewish holiday, Passover. Eric A. Kimmel, acclaimed author of more than 60 titles for children, including the Caldecott Honor Book Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, outdoes himself in this mother of all Passover books, going well beyond the typical retelling of the Passover story. Using the seder, the ceremonial Passover meal, as a starting point, Kimmel walks readers through every step of the holiday, using ancient and modern stories and illustrations to explain the legends and history behind the rituals. He includes contributions from writers such as Nina Jaffe, Debbie Friedman, and Rabbi David Schaps (a.k.a. Grandma Tirzah), and stunning artwork that spans 3,000 years and four continents, for a truly beautiful, comprehensive treasury that will be brought to the Seder table along with the Haggadah for years to come. A wise- and whimsical - haggadah 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

For anyone seeking a modern voice speaking towards the classical text, this haggadah is a gem. "A Night to Remember" was based on the all-Hebrew "Ha'lailah Ha'zeh," the authors' efforts to provide a work for contemporary Israelis. The best elements of that volume have been transferred into "A Night To Remember," including the creative illustrations from Michael Kichka, whose pictures provide both a sense of whimsy and substance. Illustrations vary from the humorous (the ox in "Chad Gad Ya" is a man in a Chicago Bulls shirt and cap) to of political caricatures, e.g. Ben-Gurion. The humor and warmth in the illustrations adds to the inviting nature of the book, which is further strengthened by a methodical layout and inviting directions.

This Haggadah provides contemporary commentaries and readings from a stunning array of sources; Rabbis Telushkin and Potok are nestled alongside authors Milan Kundera and Phillip Roth. Primo Levi's words follow Golda Meir's. Even those well versed in the sources of the Haggadah will find items of interest, with thoughts from kibbutzniks and refusniks. There is the occasional comment from the "touchy-feely" department, but some people need that in a seder, and they are provided for here.

The entire Hebrew text of the classical Ashkenazi Haggadah is provided, although not every word is translated into English. The commentaries and instructions do deviate from "black hat" Orthodoxy from time to time, but not in any way that even remotely effects the essential content of the seder. Only those rigidly ultra-Orthodox in their thinking should avoid this book. The illustration "The four daughters," with its Talmud carrying wise daughter, is enough to give such folks a fit of apoplexy- and that's just one picture.

Editorial Review:

A full traditional haggadah with a contemporary and Israeli accent. Commentaries from scholars and rabbis, mostly late 20th century, but also from novelists, poets, political leaders, and others. This book is for the family that wants to enhance their seder by bringing in ideas that will make the evening rich, thought-provoking, and fun for all. Many items for younger and older children are sprinkled throughout the book.

A Haggadah Mostly for the Younger Generations 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The "Family Haggadah" appears to be illustrated and annotated for parents who want to keep their 7 - 12 year olds engaged during the seder. For that purpose, the Family Haggadah seems to be an excellent choice. Beautifully illustrated with lots of fun "side" facts. If you have teenagers or are a group of all adults, the Family Haggadah will likely come off as too childish. The content is good for various degrees of religious seders. If you are looking for a more cultural/humanistic/secular approach to celebrating Passover, this Haggadah will leave you wanting more. I take my hat (but not my kippa) off to the author for creating a kid friendly haggadah that parents could tolerate.

Editorial Review:

With its easy-to-follow format and glorious full-color illustrations, this is the ideal choice for a home seder attended by lots of children or a congregational model seder. In just 40 pages, Family Haggadah presents all the key elements of the seder in a child-friendly way that will charm everyone at the table. Special features include:
vibrant images of ancient and contemporary artifacts and illuminated Haggadot,
photographs of modern children celebrating Passover, and
sidebars that provide enlightening commentary and thoughtful discussion questions
New traditions and innovations, including Miriam's Cup.
Suggested techniques for involving young children in the service
Popular children's Passover songs
Conduct a proper seder, enjoy group discussion and learning opportunities, and keep the children engaged--all in just 45 minutes!

haggadah 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I just wonder that no review has been forwarded yet. This is a remarkable work intended for the scolar more than for the practical use at the seder table. The comments by Guggenheimer are excellent. I used his edition for preparing the seder with the intent to draw the attention of the attendants to the variety of customs and to show the differences in lithurgy. The presentation by Guggenheimer makes this easy by using different letter types for each version. The comparison of these versions was very stimulating for my guests and the following discussion went on and on....

Historical information on the development of the Haggadah 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I originally purchased the book to see how different the Haggadahs were in the different traditions, maybe get some ideas to spice up our Ashkenazi/Reform practice. But I found something out - the Haggadahs are more the same than different, and the differences are shown with various fonts - a great idea. The differences are then discussed at length in the second section of the book, with commentaries on the historical period when the change likely came into play. Guggenheimer draws from the oldest extant copies of the Haggadah from each tradition and from the Mishnah and Talmudim (Jerusalem and Persian)to give insight into how the traditions grew and evolved to give us the current haggadahs.

Editorial Review:

In this unprecedented masterwork, The Scholar's Haggadah: Ashkenazic, Sephardic, and Oriental Versions, Heinrich Guggenheimer presents the first Haggadah to treat the texts of all Jewish groups on an equal footing and to use their divergences and concurrences as a key to the history of the text and an understanding of its development.

Make this your seder's haggadah & your guests will thank you 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

You cannot go wrong with A Different Night from the Hartman Institute as your official seder haggadah. This haggadah claims to put forth a lively dialogue between parent and child, and it does just that. The explanations, commentary, and ease-of-use make this one of the best haggadot on the market. The personal reflection sections will help you turn your seder into a family renewal ceremony and will keep even the most apathetic guest from boredom.

My favorite part of this haggadah is its collection of the many artistic representations of the Four Children, giving you a beautiful art-filled haggadah that can be used at the seder table. You could easily spend half your seder discussing the artists' interpretations.

In typical Hartman Institute fashion, this haggadah is well assembled, pedagogically effective, and extremely leader-friendly. It will be well worth the investment to 86 your standard edition Maxwell House free haggadot and make this your haggadah-of-choice.

Editorial Review:

This is the haggadah that has changed the American seder. First published in 1997, it's a full traditional seder, but with large amounts of art and commentaries, and discussion starters -- all in a user-friendly format that makes it easy to customize your seder. The Four Children section (with 20 representations going back to 1526) is already a classic. Easy-to-follow instructions make this book accessible to even a novice seder leader; and the many short commentaries will enrich anyone's Passover.
