The father of Hassidism the saintly Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov along with his foremost student Rabbi Dovber of Mezhirech present in this book, a clear concise manual containing basic guidelines for the service of The Divine.

Discussions of prayer and communion with G-d and how to reach greater levels in these areas and the steps to take in order to deal with the many disturbances and obstacles preventing their attainment are frequent in the text. The book also portrays a deep and penetrating understanding of the human condition in respect to its draw towards evil and provides practical advice through which it may be overcome and channeled for more productive and positive living . Being rendered in non-sophisticated terms makes this book very readable. Annotated by a foremost Torah scholar and Professor of Philosophy Rabbi Jacob Immanuael Schochet makes comprehension of the material richer and more simple for the average reader. The importance of such an accurate guide to the fulfillment of G-d's will is beyond measure. And thus every Synagogue, Jewish Library and Jewish home will benefit greatly from this masterpiece of Jewish literature.

Editorial Review:

Tzava`at Harivash is an anthology of teachings and instructions attributed to the Baal Shem Tov and his successor, R. Dov Ber, the Maggid of Mezhirech. Segments of Tzavaat Harivash have been translated before. This however, is its first complete English rendition. The translation, by a foremost authority on Chassidism and Jewish Mysticism, is enhanced by source-references, brief commentaries, notes on the passages that were perceived to be controversial, and a comprehensive introduction.

Editorial Review:

Both an exploration of the month of Tishrei and an introduction to the major themes of Judaism. The pieces which make up each chapter range from Chasidic stories and aphorisms, explanations of nuances in the liturgy of each holiday, and expositions of the significance of the details pertaining to each custom and observance.

Time and again the analysis yields insight into the most sublime concepts of Judaism: The unity between the Jewish people and their creator and each Jew's responsibility to sanctify the mundane world and make it a dwelling place for the Divine.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter.

In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.

The Unearned Gift of Rebbe Nachman's wisdom 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810) is one of the great Hasidic masters. In this work Chaim Kramer teaches a few of his Torahs, and those of his closest disciple Reb Noson ( 1780-1844) .These teachngs are to help us have greater happiness in life, through appreciating the great gifts G-d gives us all the time. The unearned gift of G-d's mercy and kindness to us should be with us in heart and mind all the time.
The work is filled with wisdom . Here is one teaching I found of particular meaning.
"We see that praising God is more than simply glorifying His Name. It is in itself a system whereby we strengthen our faith in God. And perhaps in an even deeper sense , praising God can instill in the individual the faith that he himself is important and plays a significant role in God's Master Plan. Thus the more we praise God the stronger becomes our faith."

To always begin again 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I believe many of the talks included in this book were first presented by Rabbi Steinsaltz in his Thursday night 'shiur' in 'Hovvei Tzion' shul in Yerushalayim. They were difficult and deep , and provided interesting original insights into the meaning of ' In the Beginning'.
My Holy Teacher David Herzberg used to say that we live ' for the sake of Beginning'. And that we are in a sense always beginning again.
Who begins this work and continues with it will deepen in learning and understanding of Torah.

Editorial Review:

In the Beginning is a journey through the Book of Genesis by one of the leading rabbis of our generation. Along this journey, its author shines his light on some of the secrets of Jewish tradition. The reader senses that we are in the presence of a master teacher whose depth of insight helps reveal to us the hidden paths of wisdom that are contained in the Torah.

A wonderful journey into Hasidism 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book provides, at the same time, some in-depth reflections into Hasidism, as well as an introduction to Hasidic thought on the Messiah. In other words, it can be easily read and entertaining both for those with a deep knowledge of Hasidism (who will love Shmuley Boteach's views on the Messiah's coming), as well as those who know little about Hasidism (who will thus be able to find out more). The book is thrilling and filled with suspence, as well as data, information, and of course the author's views, as he ably attacks others and defends his own. Another great hit by this popular hasidic rabbi !

The best book on the Jewish Messiah by far 5 out of 5 stars.

It is no doubt that Rabbi Yoel Kahn is the worlds foremost teacher of Habad Hassidism alive. This is due to his unusual talent in explaining the abstract ideas contained in Hassidic thought. In this book, besides dealing with the basic concept of the Jewish redemtion with great profundity, the author (not withstanding his controversial status among hassidic Jews) is the first to have written Rabbi Kahns teachings in English. An additional comendable factor is the authors way of lightening up the intence, deep matters at hand. It is a must for anyone intrested in the hassidic veiw of redemtion, and an excellent way to begin studying hassidic philosiphy.

Editorial Review:

The belief in the coming of the Messiah and the resurrection of the dead, as illuminated by hasidic thought.
