Editorial Review:

The words hasid and hasidism have become so familiar to people interested in the Jewish world that little thought is given to understanding exactly what hasidism is or considering its spiritual and social consequences. What, for example, are the distinguishing features of hasidism? What innovations does it embody? How did its founders see it? Why did it arouse opposition? What is the essential nature of hasidic thought? What is its spiritual essence? What does its literature consist of? What typifies its leadership? What is the secret of its persistence through the centuries? How have scholars explained its origins? Is hasidism an expression of mystical ideas, or a response to changing social circumstances? What is its connection to kabbalah? To Shabateanism? To messianism? What is its relationship to the traditional structures of authority in the Jewish world? This book aims to answer all these questions in a lucid and accessible manner.

Needed Now More Than Ever 5 out of 5 stars.

From the time of Ezra it was forbidden to study Torah while in a state of post-ejaculatory impurity. The Shulhan Arukh considers masturbation a grave sin, possibly the most severe in the Torah. For generations pious Jewish men struggled with severe ascetic practices designed to atone for masturbatory acts and erotic dreams. It seemed almost a hopeless task- but Hasidism teaches to never give up hope! Rebbe Nachman provides an "easy" remedy for a person caught in this trap. Recommended.

Editorial Review:

Depression is one of the greatest problems facing contemporary man. It stems from man s abuse of his God-given powers. The Ten Psalms making up Rebbe Nachman's Tikkun remedy attack the flaw by drawing on the most creative force in the universe: song. The varied selections of commentary material in this volume show the profundity on which the Tikkun is based. Also included is Shemot HaTzaddikim, Names of the Tzaddikim, recital of which arouses powerful spiritual forces.

Editorial Review:

Everything you always wanted to ASK about the Chareidim, but were afraid to KNOW! Orthodox Judaism from the perspective of the Chareidim Chareidization - It's the newest term in the book. And it has many members of the greater Orthodox Jewish community up in arms. The stark reality is that a major portion of Orthodox Jews don't seem to appreciate chareidim and do not welcome "chareidization". What is going on - and why? Has something changed within Orthodox Judaism? Is there a difference between an Orthodox Jew and a Chareidi? And, if so: * What is a chareidi and what is a non-chareidi Orthodox Jew (NCOJ)? Where does one entity end and the other begin? * Who are the chareidim? Where have they come from? How long have they been here? And to where are they headed? * Why do some Orthodox Jews refuse to identify as chareidi? Why do others embrace chareidi ideals? And why do some chareidim abandon them? * Why are the chareidim so successful and why are they so despised? In a thought-provoking study that is at the same time theological and sociological, studious and sarcastic, insightful and inciteful, light-spirited yet profoundly intense, Yechezkel Hirshman addresses these questions while presenting an insider's look at the upside of the Ultra-Orthodox world. Hirshman also includes a special feature chapter that examines chareidim who stray from the path.

The Tanya is the essence of Kabbalah. 5 out of 5 stars.

The Tanya is a must read for anyone who is searcing for satisfaction in life. It will guide the reader with practical advice on how to be a better person, and it will help you achieve your maximium potential in life.

Editorial Review:

By the grace of G-d

A well-lit and accessible gateway to Tanya, and the most authoritative guide to its riches.

A linear exposition and commentary on Tanya based on a popular weekly radio series in Yiddish. Rabbi Wineberg’s commentary draws upon the teachings he received from Chasidic scholars at the renowned academies of Lubavitch in Europe and on the writings of seven generations of Chabad Rebbes. Each of the lectures was examined and amended by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, so that much of the material includes the Rebbe’s insights and explanatory comments.

Lessons In Tanya leads the reader through every paragraph and page, illuminating the mystical, often allusive Talmudic, Kabalistic and Scriptural verses and concepts. It fills many gaps in what the terse Tanya text assumes to be the reader’s background knowledge.

This set comes in a beautiful slip-cased set, with ribbon-markers to aid with study.

Editorial Review:

Martin Buber’s embrace of Hasidism at the start of the twentieth century was instrumental to the revival of this popular form of Jewish mysticism. Hoping to instigate a Jewish cultural and spiritual renaissance, he published a series of anthologies of Hasidic teachings written in German to introduce the tradition to a wide audience. In Aesthetics of Renewal, Martina Urban closely analyzes Buber’s writings and sources to explore his interpretation of Hasidic spirituality as a form of cultural criticism. For Buber, Hasidic legends and teachings were not a static, canonical body of knowledge, but were dynamic and open to continuous reinterpretation. Urban argues that this representation of Hasidism was essential to the Zionist effort to restore a sense of unity across the Jewish diaspora as purely religious traditions weakened—and that Buber’s anthologies in turn played a vital part in the broad movement to use cultural memory as a means to reconstruct a collective identity for Jews. As Urban unravels the rich layers of Buber’s vision of Hasidism in this insightful book, he emerges as one of the preeminent thinkers on the place of religion in modern culture.

Editorial Review:

The Life and Teachings of Rabbi DovBer of Mezrich.

Rabbi DovBer, known as the "Maggid of Mezrich," was widely recognized as one of the most extraordinary figures of his generation, yet the details of his life have long been a mystery. Among historians, his greatness has been overshadowed by that of his master and teacher, the Baal Shem Tov. Now, for the first time, Rabbi DovBer is the subject of a thorough scholarly account of his life and works.

Under his leadership, the excitement generated by the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov was consolidated into a structured, cohesive movement. Philosophically, too, the Maggid developed and elucidated the seminal wisdom of his illustrious predecessor, which was later further developed in the philosophic system of the Maggid's disciple, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi.

Joseph Weiss (1933-69) showed a single-minded commitment to identifying and describing the mystical element in Hasidism and to unraveling the spiritual and historical meaning of the Hasidic movement. The studies collected in this volume, most of them written more than forty years ago, are still quoted in every serious study of Hasidism.

Hundert review 4 out of 5 stars.

Well done but some of the footnote references don't check out...editor may have relied on contributors a bit too much.

Editorial Review:

This book provides a comprehensive view of the history, the beliefs and practices, and the sociology of the Hasidic Movement. Simultaneously it provides a reflection of the development of the scholarly understanding of Hasidism from the 18th century to the present. For the first time, the English reader will have access to Dubnow's presentation of Israel Baal Sheen Tov, founder of Hasidism, Dinur's analysis of the 18th-century sermons and other rabbinic literature which formed the background for the appearance of the movement and Wertheim's flawed but fascinating description of the behaviour of the Hasid. The volume concludes with a synthesis of the sociological literature on contemporary Hasidism. The contributors include Solomon Maimon, Simon Dubnow, Ben Zion Dinur, Murray Jay Rosman, Shmuel Ettinger, Mordecai L. Wilensky, Gershom Scholem, Ada Rapoport-Albert, Louis Jacobs, Aaron Wertheim, Raphael Mahler, Martin Buber, and Stephen Sharot.

Glimpses of Rebbe Nachman, introduced by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a valuable collection of spiritual insights and aphorisms -- a taste of Breslov teachings. One of my favorites is: "When asked, 'What is in reality the power of choice?' the Rebbe answered, 'Simple. If you want, you do. If not, not.'"

I've treasured this book since it was first published in 1980. It was one of the first translations of Rebbe Nachman into English and a courageous undertaking at the time. The introduction by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan is inspiring reading in itself.

Rabbi Rocks! 5 out of 5 stars.

Rabbi Nachman is more than credible, his wisdom is universal, humanistic and bottom-line. It is not only for jews, but for all faiths.

Editorial Review:

No situation is so desperate that it cannot be turned to good; God has spread good throughout the Creation, even in the darkest places. This is a book for people in all walks of life. It contains extracts from the entire corpus of Breslov writings in order to combat hopelessness and depression and on how to draw from the wellsprings of joy and spiritual strength.
