A valuable work to enrich your learning. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I for many years learned with the Hebrew version of this work , called ' Sefer HaToda-ah.' This book was turned to whenever we were approaching a holiday or time of special meaning. Then the interpretation of KiTov his reading of the sources would greatly enrich our learning. I too believe this should be a part of the library of every Jewish home.

A Complete History and Insight into Jewish Lifecycle 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is the most comprehensive book on Jewish Lifecycle events that I have read. It discusses the entire Jewish Calendar and reviews ever significant date. In addition, he discusses areas that surprised me, such as Rosh Chodesh (the lunar calendar and celebrating the new month).

The series also covers the intermediate days between holidays and the laws that apply. The detail in which he covers Sukkot and the "Four Species" is amazing".

The wonderful part of it all is that the author traces the history of the events, and the pertinent Halacha (Jewish law) all the way back to the time of the First Temple.

An excellent, comprehensive work! It is done in a very easy reading style and yet thoroughly covers the subject. This is a resource for someone who really wants to learn about living Judaism!

Editorial Review:

This beloved classic, completely revised and annotated for the contemporary reader, explores the holidays, Festivals and fast days of the Jewish calendar and explains their laws and customs. Midrashic commentaries and insights of great Jewish thinkers and spiritual leaders enhance the heartwarming, inspiring text. 3 volume gift boxed set. Individual volumes not sold separately.

Almost Too Good to Be True 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The book, that is. The stories and pictures are just unbelievably warm and beautiful. I often read this short book cover to cover during Chanukah--one sparkling little gem a night. Just perfect for adults and, I'm sure, children, too. In fact, I can't imagine anything nicer than to read these to a kid on Chanukah. This book is the perfect gift, to yourself or anyone else. And if you can find yourself a hardcover copy, then you're *really* in luck.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. This book has eight stories, one for each night of Hanukkah. All the stories were interesting and had beautiful illustrations. My favorite story was The Power of Light. Isacc Bashevis Singer is a Nobel Prize Winner. This is a great book.

Isaac Bashevis Singer-one of the greatest story-tellers of all time-opens this sparkling series of eight Chanukah stories with a reminiscence from his own childhood in his parents' house. He recalls once evening, the last night of the festival of lights when his father, a rabbi in Warsaw, allowed his children to play the Chanukah game of dreidel.

On this occasion, it was snowing, and his brother Joshua pointed out that each snowflake was a hexagon-it had six sides "with fancy little designs and decorations." His father added that it was the world of God Almighty. The story then explains how the game of dreidel works, right down to the meaning of the letters on the little top. And it imparts the story of a miracle contemporary to his father's time.

All eight other stories, including the title piece about Chanukah during the Nazi era, are miracles in their own right.

The best "all purpose" Hanukkah book around 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

The book tells the story clearly and concisely; the illustrations (new this year) are colorful and eye-catching, but what sets the book apart are the discussion themes for each of the eight nights -- suggestions for families to chat about while the candles are burning (what it means to be free, gifts and giving, what makes a hero, and more. There's also music and recipes to round out the holiday celebration.

Just what I was looking for to help my niece learn about Hanukkah. 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my niece who was curious about Hanukkah and it answered most of her questions. It is well illustrated and written. I enjoyed it myself.

Editorial Review:

A highly-praised retelling of the Hanukkah story with bright, colorful pictures and discussion tops and questions to enhance each of the 8 nights of celebration. With candle blessings, rules for playing dreidel, recipes for ltakes and sufganiyot (jelly donuts), words and music to favorite Hanukkah songs -- plus thoughts on being free, being different, miracles, legends, heroes, gifts, gelt, and giving. Everything you need for a Happy Hanukkah.

Editorial Review:

The biblical holy days are not just for Jews. Christians, too, can receive the blessing of these glorious days, the greatest object lessons in the Bible.

God gave each day to teach his people about him and his relationship to them. From the Sabbath, which pictures eternity, to the popular holiday, Hanukkah, mentioned by name only in the gospel of John, the special times were set apart to bless the people of God.

In this book, Barney Kasdan, leader of Kehilat Ariel of San Diego, one of the largest Messianic congregations in the world, explains every holy day described in Scripture. He teaches about the major and minor holy days, ever mindful that he is writing to both Jews and Christians.

Beginning with the Sabbath, the first holy day revealed in Scripture, he writes about Passover, Firstfruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, The Feast of Tabernacles, Hanukkah—the Festival of Dedication, and Purim, the special day given in the time of Queen Esther.

Each chapter offers historical background, traditional Jewish observance, relevance to the New Testament, prophetic significance, and a practical guide for believers, including recipes, songs, and crafts.

There are other books on the subject of the Feasts of Israel, but this one goes beyond them all. It is written by a Messianic Jew, a Jew who trusts Yeshua. Who better to explain God's Appointed Times?

Heartrending. 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book will break your heart. Written by Edward Flannery, a Roman Catholic Priest, it studies some twenty three centuries of worldwide anti-Semitism.

This considerable, well written revised & updated edition is all the more significant and encouraging due to it's Christian authorship. This itself is commendable due to the many aspects of historic anti-Semitism prevalent within some areas of the Church itself. Whilst many might see some of the writings as self incriminating, others might see a refreshing honesty and a wish to heal the relationship between Christian and Jew, both of whom share a common foundation in their faith.

At the outset, the author claims that the vast majority of even well educated Christians have been relatively ignorant of what has happened to the Jews throughout history and the culpable involvement of many facets of the Church. Apart from a few recent publications, little having been included about anti-Semitism in Christian history books or social studies.

The author states that, by comparison, the Jews themselves are largely & acutely aware of their painful history in such matters.

This excellent book covers anti-Semitism in all it's many forms, including persecution, torture, pogroms, massacres, social degradations, forced baptisms & conversions throughout the many periods of the Diaspora.

These including the Black Death (plague), the Spanish Inquisition, the Holocaust and the present day Middle East. Throughout all these eras in history, many peoples having found in the Jew the scapegoat needed to rationalise the evils of their social, political and natural calamities.

Writing about the `Black Death' (1347-50), the author describes how the Jews were directly blamed not only for the onset of the plague but also it's spread. This virulent myth leading to the untold massacres of whole Jewish communities. The population of one entire Jewish town in France being burned to death on just such a assertion.

Indeed the author painfully outlines that during this era, the extent of Jewish casualties was virtually impossible to determine. Over 200 Jewish communities, large & small, being destroyed in similar manners. These massacres of Jewish people being so widespread, with the greatest perhaps in Germany, where every sizeable city was affected. The scope of the slaughter being given some scale when the Polish casualties of some 10,000 being described as relatively light in comparison to other areas. The utter savagery of some incidents not being suitable to describe here.

In relation to the Holocaust, which is commendably covered in itself, the writer illustrates the sympathies for the Nazi regime & the `Final Solution' expressed by prominent Arab personages such as the close confident of Adolf Hitler, Haj Amir El Husseini, the Grant Mufti of Jerusalem. (The latter being an uncle to PLO leader, Yasser Arafat, whose family name is al-Husseini.).

With reference to the modern day Mid-East, the writer covers what he calls the overt expression and practice of Arab anti-Semitism. He proceeds to describe how Arab propaganda, already hostile to the existence of the State of Israel, has widened it's focus to further include the Jewish people and their religion.

The author describes how the horrendous myths of the `Blood Libel' and the `Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion' have been revived in the Mid-East often through state approved channels of some Arab countries.

Considered in the context of how these two myths have resulted in the historic massacres and slaughter of innocent Jews worldwide, the impact of their revival is analysed.

All in all this is an upsetting book. However, I really consider it to be required reading on this subject. There is not really any prejudice towards any one group as being responsible for the anti-Semitism so graphically illustrated and discussed here. This work just really shows how widespread the actual sources and origins of this virulent enmity actually are. It also shows the basic evil of this racial hatred that has seen one people suffer more than any other, just because of their religion, just because they are Jews.

Editorial Review:

This revised and updated edition of THE ANGUISH OF THE JEWS - a classic history of anti-Semitism written by a Roman Catholic priest and now with a foreword by Philip Cunningham is as relevant today as when it was first published in 1964.

Hailed by Jews and Christians alike as a groundbreaking book that did much to expose the reality of historical anti-Semitism in the United States and around the world, it includes material covering the last two decades; it considers developments in the Middle East, and it explores the impact that Judaic studies have had on Christian thought.

A great Channukah book you will enoy reading to your kids. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

We have about 10 Channukah books at our house, but none come close to capturing the spirit of this holiday evident in "When Mindy Saved Hanukkah." The story presumes a knowledge of the reason for Channukah-so you still need at least one other good book about the story of Channukah. But this book can stand on its own as an example of heroics, a model of family, and a spirit of giving. My kids love this book and we read it all year long, but because of the well written prose and the wry way the story unfolds, I enjoy it every time, as much as they do. Even more importantly, my kids sort of believe this story and my 3 year old son insists we look for the cat in the sanctuary at our synangogue, since he reasons one must exist in every temple.

Even the tiniest people need to celebrate Hanukkah... 5 out of 5 stars.

If your children enjoy the Littles or the Borrowers, they'll love the Kleins. They are a tiny family living a big family's home and need to gather supplies for the holiday. There's just one problem...the big family owns a cat!

Editorial Review:

There are moments in life when one is caught utterly unprepared: a death in the family, the end of a relationship, a health crisis. These are times when the solid ground we thought we stood on disappears beneath our feet, and we turn to faith to help us find our way back. The Days of Awe encompass the weeks just preceding Rosh Hashanah up to Yom Kippur, a period in which Jews take part in a series of rituals and prayers that reenact the journey of the soul through the world from birth to death. Like the days of Lent or Ramadan, the purpose of these rituals is to experience this brokenheartedness and open one's heart to God. The acclaimed Rabbi Lew has taken the beauty and power of these rituals and made of them a journey of seven distinct stages that will touch the spirit of all readers in search of inner transformation. Rabbi Lew weaves together Torah readings, Buddhist parables, and Jewish fables and stories from his own life, to lay bare the meanings of this ancient Jewish passage. Drawing on both his rabbinical training and his scholarship in Buddhism, Lew leads readers on a journey from confusion to clarity, from doubt to belief, as he opens a path to self-discovery that is accessible to readers of all faiths.THIS IS REAL AND YOU ARE COMPLETELY UNPREPARED unveils the deeper meanings of the High Holidays, enabling Jews and believers of all kinds to reconnect to their faith with a vibrancy and intimacy that will resonate throughout the year.

My favorite book for exploring the Jewish spiritual cycle 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

After almost a decade of living with this book, it remains my favorite for entering the Jewish cycle of observance and celebration. I return to it over and over as a source for creative, meaningful and deeply spiritual ways of participating in Jewish life. The guidance given in this book penetrates the practices and rituals, to allow me to embrace the essence of Jewish spirituality. The book gives an historical context for the days of observance as well as innovative approaches to their celebration. It is a treasure and I give it as a gift when people convert to Judaism, become a bar or bat mitzvah or when they seek a deeper understanding of Judaism.

Editorial Review:

Circling the Jewish calendar from Rosh Hashanah to Tisha B'Av, this lively, accessible guide includes rituals, recipes, songs, prayers, and suggestions for new approaches to holiday observance.

"A wonderful blend of information and innovation that will help readers find both traditional and new meaning in the Jewish holidays." —Judith Plaskow, author of Standing Again at Sinai

Are you looking for a small picture book which describes Hanukkah? If you are, Roni Schotter has created just the one for you. Inside the front cover is a description of four specific things associated with Hanukkah. The pictures throughout the book show you just how the traditions of Hanukkah are celebrated. There are little ones that small kids will be able to relate to for celebrating the holiday, including being tempted to steal food before mealtime.

With thick pages, "Hanukkah!" is a terrific book for the youngest reader. Lots of families celebrating together are a big part of this book. Isn't that what this special time of year is great for, celebrating with friends and families getting together? I love this book!
