Editorial Review:

Treasures of the Heart is a unique rendition of stories in the Hebrew Bible that are part of the foundation of Judaism and western literature. Renowned storyteller and mythologist Diane Wolkstein seamlessly weaves oral legends into the fabric of the ancient texts, creating new stories that remain true to the spirit of their original sources. Drawing on a lifetime of study of world myths and tribal cultures, the author chooses the legends that best illuminate the text and reveal its hidden wisdom. Biblical characters such as Moses, Ruth, and Solomon—their passions, ethical dilemmas, and changing relationships with God—are rendered with astonishing immediacy, achieved through careful research and a storyteller’s grace.

Structured according to the Jewish calendar, Treasures of the Heart retells the stories that are
traditionally read on each holiday. In recounting the holiday stories, Wolkstein discovers a new narrative. As the Hebrew people journey from spring to winter, from Passover to Purim, they follow a path from youth to maturity. This holiday cycle also moves from Moses, a male messenger of God, to Esther and Mordecai, a woman and a man who work together to rescue their community. Wolkstein offers a modern perspective by highlighting the role of female characters in the stories and by introducing the Kabbalistic concept of the Shechinah, God’s feminine presence on earth.

The commentaries, often based on Kabbalistic thought, place each story in an historical and religious context.
Treasures of the Heart presents a wealth of scholarship in a form that makes compelling reading for all students of spiritual life. In our rapidly changing world, this innovative book invites.

Editorial Review:

JPS' new holiday books take us through the joys, spirit, and meaning of the seasons. Blending the old and the new, they ground us in the origins and traditions of each holiday and open up to us ways we can add our own expression to these special days. Although synagogue ritual is touched upon, the real focus here is on our personal connections to each holiday and our home observance. As we move from season to season, Paul Steinberg shares with us a rich collection of readings from many of the Jewish greats - Maimonides, Rashi, Nachmanides, Shlomo Carlebach, Marge Piercy, Elie Wiesel, Martin Buber, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Arthur Green, and others - and he guides us in discovering for ourselves the many treasures within each text. The readings teach us about the history of each holiday, as well as its theological, ethical, agricultural, and seasonal importance and interpretation; others give us inspiration and much food for thought. These stories, essays, poems, anecdotes, and rituals help us discover how deeply Jewish traditions are rooted in nature's yearly cycle, and how beautifully season and spirit are woven together throughout the Jewish year.

Great Beginning Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This guide was a great stepping stone to help my family celebrate Hanukkah from a messianic Jewish standpoint. We want to celebrate Hanukkah with an emphasis on Messiah Yeshua. After researching more indepth on the internet however, I wish this book explained a little more specifically about Scriptures that could be read each night and/or more modern songs. The history and reason behind celebrating Hanukkah as a believer is top notch though.

Good but not far enough 4 out of 5 stars.

I found this to be a good starting point, but I believe that Hanukkah has more meaning with Y'shua in my life. I am currently evaluating it in this "light."

succinct resource from messianic perspective 4 out of 5 stars.

While I don't recommend it for mainstream Jews, this booklet can be helpful for those coming from a Messianic Jewish or Hebrew Christian background (or just any Christian who wants to celebrate Hanukkah).

Clear, concise, and practical, with basic yet helpful theological insights. Will get you started if the holiday is new to you.

Editorial Review:

Historical background, modern-day customs, deep meaning for all of God’s people--this book covers all the "how-tos." Recipes, music, and prayers maked Hanukkah accessible to everyone. Paperback, 32 pages.

Editorial Review:

In Israel, the High Holiday cycle marks the transition from summer to the rainy season. In "Waiting for Rain", the acclaimed teacher Bryna Levy offers a compelling collection of meditations that examine the biblical and liturgical readings associated with the High Holidays, from Rosh Hashanah to Simhat Torah. Based on a series of lectures given in Jerusalem at Matan - the Women's Institute for Torah Studies, and known as "The Hoshana Rabbah Lectures", Levy's readings of the traditional texts echo the natural and spiritual tenor of this season."Waiting for Rain" joins the field of biblical interpretation known as parshanut ha-mikrah. It offers fresh insights into traditional rabbinic interpretation, together with the author's perspective as a modern Orthodox woman bible scholar. Levy explores the psyches of the biblical characters and addresses issues such as our connectedness to others, the tragedy of wasted opportunity, confronting evil, the denial of death, faith and doubt, personal and communal responsibility, universalism versus particularism, the challenge of leadership, sin and atonement, and the efficacy of prayer. The result is a highly personal approach to the meaning of the High Holidays that resonates with our own modern lives.Stories about heroes and heroines, love, faith, hope, and dreams make "Waiting for Rain" a moving and engaging source for study and reflection as well as an excellent companion to the traditional High Holiday prayer services.

Understand the Prayer Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

One of the beauties of Judaism is the universality of Hebrew prayer. Go to synagogues in Australia, France, or China, and you can find the same Hebrew prayers recited, as Jews have recited them for centuries. Alas, for most of the world's residents, and a large share of the world's Jews, Hebrew is a foreign language, and a very foreign one at that. And so, many Jews recite the Jewish prayers without knowing exactly what we are saying.

This interlinear translation of the prayer book can help. It prints an English translation below each Hebrew word in the prayer book. And footnotes explain the significance of key passages. This is a splendid resource for learning the meaning of the Jewish prayers and why we say them.

Note that this volume covers the Sabbath and festivals. For the High Holidays, the comparable interlinear books are
Machzor for Hashanah with an Interlinear Translation; the Schottenstein Edition and The Schottenstein Ed. Machzor for Yom Kippur with an Interlinear Translation - Ashkenaz, which also come together in a boxed set The Schottenstein Ed. Machzor for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur With an Interlinear Translation - Ash (2 Volume Slipcased Set). And for weekday prayers, the comparable interlinear book is Siddur for Weekdays with an Interlinear Translation (The Schottenstein Edition). All these volumes are published by the Orthodox Artscroll Publishing, Ltd.

For an excellent explanation of the Conservative prayer book (although not interlinear), see Or Hadash: A Commentary on Siddur Sim Shalom for Shabbat and Festivals. And for an explanation of the old Reform prayer book (also not interlinear), see Lawrence Hoffman, Gates of Understanding (1977), and for the High Holidays Gates of Understanding 2 (Sha'are binah): Appreciating the Days of Awe.

And for audio tools to help you read and recite the Hebrew prayer book, consider Olam Shalem (book and cassettes) and First Steps in Hebrew Prayer - Beginner's Study Tool for Hebrew Prayer (book and compact disk). Either of these tools is an excellent complement to the volume described on this page.

All of these books will help one gain better understanding of the prayers that Jews pray, and thus to our relationship with the Eternal.

Great for Messianic Jews 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this devotional also along with the other Messianic devotional, he published. As a Jewish Believer in Yeshua, it is better suited for me. It uses the Hebrew names or sacred names. I love it! A wonderful blessing to all who have it.

Editorial Review:

The Feasts of the Lord will come alive like never before as you journey through Israel's annual appointed times with the Messianic Mo'adiym Devotional. This companion volume to the popular Messianic Daily Devotional contains insightful and uplifting devotionals from a Messianic Jewish perspective, designed specifically to be read during the yearly Mo'adiym as found in Leviticus 23 (one devotional for each day of every feast, including all 49 days of the Omer). Also included is a special, extended teaching that introduces you to God's appointed times, offering a fresh approach that lays the foundation for a unique and life-changing devotional experience. Enter into the fullness of these designated seasons with Messianic Jewish teacher and author Kevin Geoffrey, as he draws out the inherent themes found in each appointed time... deep truths that will lead us into a life of maturity, as we grow in devotion to our Master, the Messiah Yeshua.

Jewish Holidays All Year Round is a remarkable resource written by Ilene Cooper to help young readers discover their Judaic history, faith, heritage, culture and traditions, as well as what it means to be a Jew. Sample crafts and activities with holiday themes, and explanations of holidays with descriptions of how they are celebrated fill this highly recommended volume. Enhanced with full color illustrations by Elivia Savadier, Jewish Holidays All Year Round recommended for Jewish family collections and would make an ideal addition to school and community library Multicultural Studies collections for young readers.

Editorial Review:

For Jewish people every year is punctuated by special days when families rejoice in a rich heritage, recall history, renew the spirit and remember what it means to be Jewish. This illustrated book introduces the richness of the Jewish tradition and the holy days that accompany all of the major Jewish festivals. It allows young readers to explore the true meaning of these special days. The traditions and history of each holy day are explained in simple, clear language, along with the ways in which the day is observed, both in the synagogue and at home. The book also looks at crafts (including a miniature sukkah) and recipes for the special foods eaten on these occasions. The book is illustrated with artwork and photographs from the Jewish Museum and with drawings by Elivia Savadier.
