A challenge to outgrow a "Pediatric Hanukkah" 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Exciting, passionate, creative, original, inspiring and informative. This was my quickie review for those who must buy the book immediately. But let us cast a look at a book written under the auspices of the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem which therefore guarantees its pluralistic, intelligent and intellectual approach.

After the usual blessings, and traditional and modern Israeli songs, the meat of the book begins with the Maccabees' "Megillah" culled by the authors from the Books of the Maccabees and other historical and midrashic sources. Naturally divided into eight sections for nightly readings of the story of Hannukkah. The writing is alive and gripping as we learn of the turncoat High Priest Jason,King Antiochus, the royal maniac,Hannah and her seven sons,Judah the hammer, the woman warrior Judith and others.

We are then advised to read of the heroism of a diferent modern hero every night. Pride of place is given to Natan Sharansky's personal account of how he persuaded the camp commander to light a menorah. Other heroes include Rabbi Levi Yizchak of Berditchev,Golda Meir.Yitzchak Rabin, the father of Reform Rabbi Hugo Gryn who made a margarine menorah in a concentration camp, and the zedaka heroes of Danny Siegel

By the way,its almost worth buying this book to marvel at the graphic design, and the numerous photographs of which pride of place has to go to the nine different hand postures of Rabbi Lawrence Bush representing prayer, peace, menorah, keeping kosher etc.Striking photos include that of a menorah in an apartment building overlooking a town hall in Germany bedecked with the Nazi flag, and non Jewish citizens of Billings,Montana, holding menorot to protest the anti-semitic actions of the Klu Klux Klan

Obviously children and teenagers get pride of place with over 40 pages of great ideas for exciting their imagination with stories, games, songs and cartoons.

A description of the Laws and customs(and their historical origins),ethnic foods,Christmas/Hanukkah celebrations in America, and mystical meditations lead us to the final section of eight(what else!)contemporary jewish thinkers reflections on the relevance of this festival today. As well as David Hartman,Daniel Gordis,Harold Schulweis,Irving Greenberg,Judith Kates,Herman Wouk,Mordechai Kaplan and Theodore Herzl Gaster,I am delighted that the longest article is reserved for Mordecai Gafni.

He refers to Hanukkah in terms of his forthcoming book Soul Print-our personal essence, our hidden light which is the DNA of the soul. He poignantly explains loneliness through his failure to appreciate the importance of his eight years old son's box of treasures. "He looked at me,a tear rolling down his cheek, and said:Abba,I gave you my box. In it were all the things I love. These are my things and you didn't receive them." The whirl of the dreidel is described as a metaphor for our desire to live in dance. The art of living is to know how to transform the inevitable falls into the dance of life.

Let me conclude that,as I have reviwed well over 400 books for the Jerusalem Post,I have over the years developed some sense of which books stand out from the shelves as being original and highly reader-friendly. Having previously read and used at my seder The Family Participation Hagaddah co-authored by Noam Zion,I now know to buy automatically any book written by him.

Editorial Review:

A how-to guide for a creative celebration of candle-lighting, blessings, songs, stories, and readings for adults, teenagers and children. Features 'The Maccabees' Megillah' which retells the dramatic conflict between King Antiochus and Mattathias the Priest; the heroism of Judah the Maccabee and Judith; and the martyrdom of Hannah and her seven sons.

This is a fabulous book!
My whole family loved it. Each story has a twist. It's not what you think.
It's light and yet deep reading and fun to read aloud whatever one's Jewish outlook is. Engaging even for non-jews like my husband.

Jesus' Teaching - Now I Get It 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Jesus was a first-century Jew in Palestine, and spoke to the people of His day in ways THEY understood. Un-educated and scholarly alike LIVED in a culture of Picture-Festivals and Teaching Stories and from early childhood were brought up surrounded by the picture-language which God spoke through.

Jesus came and lived amongst them. He explained the pictures and prophecies, and gave miraculous signs that He was God's answer to these mysterious Divine Revelations.

Twentieth century Westerners need a Guide, steeped in Jewish Imagery, Litergy, and Culture, to put Jesus' words and actions in context. Then we can also marvel at their beauty, simplicity and power.

The author of the Outpouring explains the religious background and timing of Jesus' words and actions. He takes the festivals, (which God had commanded the Jews to "Act out" each year for over a millenium), and explains what happened when and why, and what Jesus did in response.

Too profound for the wise, but so simple and clear that a child can understand, Jesus FULFILLS the Jewish Festivals, as He promised.

THIS IS THE BOOK YOU WILL WISH YOUR SUNDAY SCHOOL OR R.E.TEACHER HAD READ ! IT IS A MUST FOR ANYONE, CHRISTIAN OR NOT, WHO WANTS TO THRILL TO THE WORDS AND DEEDS OF THE GREATEST MAN IN HUMAN HISTORY.

Editorial Review:

THE OUTPOURING: Enhance your understanding of how God certified the credentials of the Jewish Messiah among Abraham’s seed in connection with the great, festive commemorations of the Jewish nation. John’s Gospel will come alive as you discover the magnificent relationship between the feasts of Israel and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Fishman's Book Celebrates Festivals of Sukkot and Simchat Torah 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Augusta, Georgia author, Cathy Goldberg Fishman, brings to life two Jewish fall holidays, Sukkot and Simchat Torah, in this new book published by Kar-Ben Publishing. We follow the preparations and learn about these two lesser-known Jewish holidays through the eyes of a child narrator. Written in a clear, easy-to-understand style, Fishman shows us the family building the sukkah (small shelter) that is used for this holiday, which is a harvest festival. Woven into the historical information on this and the Simchat Torah are many sights, sounds, and smells that help to bring this story alive. Artist Melanie Hall illustrates with a colorful, spiritual style just right for showing scenes of a family celebrating these rituals. A glossary at the end of the book explains the meaning of words such as "Etrog - citrus fruit symbolic of the harvest" and "Ushpizin - traditional Biblical guests who are symbolically invited to the sukkah to celebrate."

An excellent book for children who would like to learn about two of the lesser known Jewish holidays.

A must in any Jewish woman's library. 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Susan Berrin has included a clear, readable explanation of the origins of Rosh Chodesh, information on how to start up a Rosh Chodesh women's group, readings and poetry about Rosh Chodesh, and a list of sources for more information. I think every Jewish woman would want to include this in her personal library and also add it to her synagogue's library.

A Haggadah Mostly for the Younger Generations 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The "Family Haggadah" appears to be illustrated and annotated for parents who want to keep their 7 - 12 year olds engaged during the seder. For that purpose, the Family Haggadah seems to be an excellent choice. Beautifully illustrated with lots of fun "side" facts. If you have teenagers or are a group of all adults, the Family Haggadah will likely come off as too childish. The content is good for various degrees of religious seders. If you are looking for a more cultural/humanistic/secular approach to celebrating Passover, this Haggadah will leave you wanting more. I take my hat (but not my kippa) off to the author for creating a kid friendly haggadah that parents could tolerate.

Editorial Review:

With its easy-to-follow format and glorious full-color illustrations, this is the ideal choice for a home seder attended by lots of children or a congregational model seder. In just 40 pages, Family Haggadah presents all the key elements of the seder in a child-friendly way that will charm everyone at the table. Special features include:
vibrant images of ancient and contemporary artifacts and illuminated Haggadot,
photographs of modern children celebrating Passover, and
sidebars that provide enlightening commentary and thoughtful discussion questions
New traditions and innovations, including Miriam's Cup.
Suggested techniques for involving young children in the service
Popular children's Passover songs
Conduct a proper seder, enjoy group discussion and learning opportunities, and keep the children engaged--all in just 45 minutes!

Incredible treasury of info, the BEST anthology I've found 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Whether you are Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, etc...you can't do better than this anthology which provides a collection of essays, photos and historical info covering Hannukah. I thought I knew at least all the BASIC info about Hannuka but this book made me realize I'd just begun to tap the surface of information about this holiday.
From competing ideas about the rituatl of candle lighting, the shared narrative of the Maccabees, Hasidic rebbes and their views,e tc...this book covers it all!
There are sections on how Hannukah has been interpreted and celebrated (or not) by various Jewish communities, a collection of historical information, opinions form historians, rabbis, scientist and Kabbalists. There are also profiles of some of the greatest Jewish heroes.

The photos and illustrations are excellent and could be used in classes or seminars.

Whether you are gathering information for your children or for adults, you should be able to find something to add excitment and valuable info to your holiday celebration. You'll definitely have plenty of ideas to spark conversation and share various opinions.

Editorial Review:

Hanukkah thoughts and perspectives by such contemporary Jewish thinkers as David Hartman, Irving Greenberg, Chaim Potok, Daniel Gordis, and the Lubavitcher Rebbe. These pluralistic perspectives help explain how different communities and denominations find their particular identity symbolised in the light of the Menorah.
