Sophisticated & Elegant Jewish Cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Faye Levy's cookbook is almost homage to the great "French Chef", Julia Child, who suggested that Levy write such a book. Faye Levy has sampled & studied worldwide Jewish cuisine, and fortunately for us compiled her work into this elegant, yet easy to follow cookbook with recipes from all parts of Europe and the Middle East. Not only did I become acquainted with new recipes and cooking techniques, but learned something of the Jewish tradition, as well.

Levy's culinary education is thoroughly wide ranging, running the gamut from formal studies in France & Israel, to learning various Sephardic & Ashkenazi cooking techniques from her friends & family in Israel & the United States.

Her simple instructions enabled me to produce a delicious and greatly praised French/Alsace raisin matzah kugel for our Passover seder. I plan to turn to Levy's book often for future holidays celebrations. This is a cookbook for anyone who wants to produce Jewish cuisine at its best.

Editorial Review:

Drawing on Polish, Yemenite, and Israeli traditions, a collection of Jewish international recipes includes such dishes as Chive Blintzes with Cabbage and Sour Cream, Aromatic Lentil Soup, and Sweet and Sour Salmon. Reprint.

Spectacular lifestyle, FABULOUS recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Regardless of what comments say, the bottom line is that Stacy Cohen has elevated the stodgy, starchy, fattening, generally revolting excuse for edible that kosher food can often be, and has instead created something that every person---Jew and non-Jew alike--can serve to loved ones, guests, and at every sort of event imaginable. Sure, some of this book is pure inspiration/aspiration, but that's okay: at a time like this, we need escapism now more than ever. Remember: this is why the glitzy movies of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were so popular during the Depression----viewers needed them, and we still watch them today. Regardless of what anyone says, Mrs. Cohen has created a wonderful, usable piece of escapism---but has grounded it in delicious KOSHER recipes and menus. And no other book that I know of does that. L'CHAIM!

Challah, Preschool Style! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Recently published by Kar-Ben, It's Challah Time is a wonderful photo-documentary of challah-baking by preschool children. The setting of the story is the preschool classroom itself. The children actively participate in adding the ingredients, mixing, kneading, rolling and braiding the home-made bread in the housekeeping area. As they wait for the challah to bake, they are pictured doing those things preschoolers do: reading in the book area and singing and dancing with the visiting Cantor. Finally, the challah is ready, the table is set, prayers are said. There's only one more thing to do...and by the looks on the faces of the children on both the front and back covers, the challah-baking experience is quite a success!
The photographs in this book are just wonderful. The children will love looking at the children their ages in a setting so similar to their own. I'm thinking I may need two copies of this book: one for story-telling and one for the housekeeping area itself. What a great reference for not only an actual challah-baking activity, but for a pretend one as well!

It then shows how the use of low-fat ingredients coupled with appropriate cooking methods can turn once high-fat foods into delicious low-fat alternatives. This exciting collection includes such kosher classics as plump pierogen and knishes, crisp potato latkes, and old fashioned chicken soup complete with fluffy matzoh balls. Choose from a wide variety of hearty chulents and kugels, as well as dessert classics like prune-filled hamantaschen, creamy cheese blintzes, and sweet honey cake. Nice History of Jewish Cooking & Culture 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you ever wondered why Sephardic Jews put dates in their Charoses & Askenazi Jews didn't, this book is a good place to find out.

This is not a kosher cookbook although many of the recipes are kosher. The chapters are divided into countries rather than types of recipes. Then within the chapters are food divisions. I really liked finding out why recipes differed from country to country

Editorial Review:

Eat and Be Satisfied is the first comprehensive and critical history of Jewish food from biblical times until the present. John Cooper explores the traditional foods the everyday diets as well as the specialties for the Sabbath and festivals of both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic cuisines. He discusses the often debated question of what makes certain foods Jewish and details the evolution of such traditional dishes as cholent and gefilte fish.
